Florida-born alto saxophonist Julian Cannonball Adderley distinguished himself as a member of Miles Davis's groups (he's the sultry alto on Kind of Blue) and with the hard-bop ensembles he co-led with his cornet-playing brother Nat. This recording, produced by Orrin Keepnews in 1963 for the Riverside label, features Adderley performing bossa nova-based compositions. Anchored by Brazilian composer and pianist Sergio Mendes's band (with alto saxophonist Paulo Moura), Adderley's singing sax lines float over the sunny Rio rhythms, owing more to Benny Carter than Charlie Parker. The renditions of Antonio Carlos Jobim's standards "Corcovado" and "Once I Loved" and Joao Donato's "Minha Saudades" are comparable to Stan Getz's Legendary records from the same period, showing anew that jazz and South American music have learned much from each other. --Eugene Holley Jr.

Album Description

This 1962 project marked the American recording debut of Brazilian masters Sergio Mendes and Dom Um Romao in a program of great jazz-inflected sambas by Antonio Carlos Jobim, Joao Donato and others. Includes two alternate takes.

5 out of 5 stars Necessary addition to any Jazz collection.......2007-05-01

Marcelo Maciel has summed up all the details below, and this album really fits in very well with any general music collection. I actually like this Brazilian album more than any other of Cannonball Adderley's I've heard, and thankfully it ages like good wine and just gets better with time. Be sure not to get the 2006 Limited Edition for $23.99 though, the extra 14 dollars only ensures that you don't get the 2 bonus tracks (the alternate take of Corcovado and the single version of clouds). I can't see many copies of that one being sold.

This is quintessential Bossa Nova... and the best thing is that I'm learning so much just reading the other reviews here.... I love Bossa Nova... it's my favorite Latin music and my favorite Jazz music....

5 out of 5 stars A nice surprise.......2003-05-03

I've always been a fan of Cannonball's standard jazz work (esp. with Miles Davis), so I was delighted to hear about this CD. I'm also a fan of Sergio Mendes who plays piano on this CD. The first cut is very carefree and makes me feel as if I'm walking along the sandy beaches of Brazil. A wonderful intro to Sergio Mendes. It's a good buy.

4 out of 5 stars Cannonball's Bossa Nova -corrected.......2001-12-28

The Jazz-Samba genre, very expressive in the 60's, was inauurated, in Brazil, by Meirelles and the Copa 5 group, in the famous record with Luiz Carlos Vinhas and Pedro Paulo (piano and trumpet). In United States, the genre came in 1962 with Stan Getz and Charlie Byrd with the excellent "Jazz Samba", in which some brazilian music's pearls are explored with the sophistication of the guitar-tenor saxophone combination. The Getz's soft tone sound and the Byrd's complex and melodic improvisations contributed to this. It is irrefutable that the peak of this brazilian music fashion in USA came in 1963, with "Getz/Gilberto", in which the samba's broken rithmys, that was a non-solved problem in Jazz Samba, are well managed by Milton Banana.
Following this line, "Cannonball's Bossa Nova" record brings a experienced drummer, Dom Um Romão, who also is present in the Sinatra/ Tom Jobim record. This secure rhytmic support is noticed too in the Durval Ferreira's accompaniment, simple and, so, beatiful. With Sergio Mendes, about his short solos, we have a paralell in the minimalistic improvisation of Jobim. This cool touch it's well perceived in Jobim's solos in the music "O Grande Amor" (Getz/Gilberto) and in the record "The Composer of Desafinado Plays" (1963), in which, almost always, only the right hand is used. Cannonball, a high quality saxophonist, complete the group. His perfect technique allows the full exploration of his musical ideas. His extrem softness and potent sonority (remembers Getz sometimes) and his bebop/bluesy musical speech, Charlie Parker's heritage, are perfect not to a bossa nova record, but for a jazz/bossa approach.
The entire record gets a fine taste, but "Amor em Paz (Once I Loved)", lovely Jobim's melody, shows the great artist who is Cannonball Adderley. Not in his "soul music" incursions, but in his great and pungent lyrical sense that he gives to the ballads ("Stars Fell in Alabama", in the "C.A Quintet in Chicago", 1959, is my preferred). It is almost irresistible to compare Corcovado (Quiet Nights) in this record with Getz/Gilberto record, but both are great, each one with his qualities. For the jazz lovers and for the brazilian music lovers this record is, farther indispensable, a great joy, a great example of good music, a... so, listen it!!! ASAP!!!

4 out of 5 stars Don't buy if you are expecting Brasil 65/66, buy it for the Jazz.......2007-01-17

This is Sergio before Brasil 65/66 and I would consider them two different sounds. I would describe it simply as Latin Jazz, very good Latin Jazz. Lots of recognizable tunes here. Segio is an icon and should be in everybody's collection. Recommended if you are buying it for the Jazz and not recommended if you think you are getting more Brasil 65/66.

4 out of 5 stars A Nice Pair.......2006-05-18

Based on the musical quality and added value of receiving two albums on one cd I would give this a 5 star rating. Where the quality is lacking is in the poor cd re-mastering which is prevalent on most of the re-issues released by this record label. They have a dry, brittle character which sounds artificial. Although The Swinger... boasts jazz heavyweights Art Farmer, Phil Woods, Hubert Laws, and Brazilian master A.C. Jobim himself on guitar, I prefer The Beat Of Brazil. The warm soulful sound of trombones and tenor sax combined with the upbeat arrangements is hard to beat.

5 out of 5 stars Jazz Bossa Nova x Non-Jazz Bossa Nova.......2000-07-01

Sergio Mendes is one of those rare Brazilian artists who plays very well on both shores. This CD contains 2 albums from his Brazilian output. You should know that the album here contained "The Beat of Brazil" was originally entiled "Você Ainda Não Ouviu Nada". Furthermore, you should know this is considered the best of all Mendes' output by Brazilian serious reviewers and musicians. Here @ Amazon, you'll also find Sergio Mendes samba (not jazzy) from his Brazil'66 efforts and I would not keep myself on a radical point-of-view of discarding them: it is very good samba too, though not jazzy. If I had to choose, I'd pick'em all. This CD is essential to serious Bossa Nova collectors. All stars.

5 out of 5 stars Some of Sergio's best jazz efforts.......2000-06-18

This compilation set features the talents of Sergio's Bossa Rio Sextet recorded in Brazil. To borrow a phrase from a Brazilian journalist I highly respect, this group "is tight and swinging" from the first opening bars to the last.

Unfortunately, this group only recorded a few albums in Brazil ("The Beat of Brazil" LP actually is a U.S. reissue of the Philips Brasil "Sergio Mendes and Bossa Rio" LP). We deserved to hear more from these great jazzmen, all of them.

Antonio Carlos Jobim himself did the arrangement for "Ele e Carioca" on the "Beat of Brazil" LP!

If you are a jazz fan and want to hear good solid arrangements and first class jazz piano playing by Sergio, be sure to pick up this compilation, it will not disappoint.

4 out of 5 stars Bossa meets bop with great results........1999-10-21

Forget Brasil '66 and all those awful Beatles covers. This disk holds Sergio's two best albums with instrumental cuts melding bossa nova with straight ahead bop. "Swinger" is a mostly pensive set with great sidemen such as Art Farmer, Hubert Laws, and Phil Woods. For "Beat" Sergio assembles a powerful sextet and lets things rip. Ela e Carioca is like nothing you've heard, and here's the all-time best arrangement of Desafinado (except possibly for Herbie Mann at Newport '65). Only downside is the pathetic edit of Corcovado, but you'll be bothered only if you've heard the orignal vinyl cut.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Start..............2007-06-24

This was Ana Caram's initial effort for Chesky Records back in 1989. And a wonderful effort it is! Mixing English with Portugese, and singing the music of several composers, ranging from herself to Antonio Carlos Jobim to Carole King, she gives us a thoroughly charming album. Ana's voice has something of a "little girl" quality, but this is no child; she was already past 30.

Chesky Records needs no introduction: prefect technique, sound and engineering. They, along with Reference Recordings, establish the "gold standard" of the recording art. This is one of several Latin Jazz albums they've done, but their catalog ranges from Bach to Blues, and all points in between--and all done to the same high standard.

This superbly enjoyable album whetted out desire for more of the same; we know now that it was only the first of several great listening experiences. Word of warning; Chesky Records are great, but not easy to find. Grab this when you have the chance.

5 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC!.......2003-09-28

Ana is fantastic! If you wanna listen to inspiring music . . .get this CD!

3 out of 5 stars somewhat disappointing performance.......2002-05-11

While Ana has a wonderful voice and the production/recording quality are first rate, the program selection was disappointing. Many of the Brazilian tunes are translated to English and loose much of their original poetry. This was Anna's first recording and it shows. Pick up Amazonia or other later releases if you enjoy good Brazilian music, you won't be disappointed with her later work.

5 out of 5 stars A Happy Discovery.......2002-01-02

I've only begun to explore the realm of Brazilian music, but once I moved beyond Astrud and Bebel Gilberto, Ana Caram was a wonderful discovery. This young protege' of Antonio Carlos Jobim has a smooth, breezy, bird-like voice, singing in either Portuguese or pleasantly accented English. She is accompanied on this CD by a talented combo including Jobim, and Paquito D'Rivera. This is a soft and romantic collection of numbers that will transport you to a warm tropical night in a quiet cafe'. I highly recommend it as an introduction to this delightful singer.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Discovery.......2001-12-27

I've only just begun to explore the realm of Brazilian music, but after moving beyond Astrud and Bebel Gilberto, Ana Caram has been a happy discovery. This young protege' of Antonio Carlos Jobim has a clear, smooth, bird-like voice, and on this CD is joined by a great combo of talent including Jobim and Paquito D'Rivera. She sings some songs in Portuguese and others in a pleasantly accented english. This collection of numbers is light, soft, romantic and uplifting. It will transport you to a warm tropical night in a quiet cafe'. I highly recommend it!

    Album Description

The Sound of Rio: Brasileirinho is a 90-minute musical documentary film about Choro, the first genuinely Brazilian urban music. It was back in the late 19th century in Rio de Janeiro when Brazilian musicians started to blend European melodies, Afro-Brazilian rhythms and the melancholic interpretation of the Brazilian Indians' music to create Choro.

This fabulous reissue feature both LP's, A Man & A Woman (With Tamiko Jones) & Recorded In Rio De Janeiro (With Joao Gilberto & Antonio Carlos Jobim) on 1 CD. One of the most popular Jazz flutists of the 1960s and 1970s, Herbie Mann incorporated music from many cultures into his repertoire and was one of the first musicians to expose American listeners to Brazilian music. Female vocalist Tamiko Jones and famed Brazilian musicians Joao Gilberto and Antonio Carlos Jobim collaborate with Mann on this two-album collection, which features Day Tripper, Amor Em Paz, One Note Samba, and many more.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Mann from Brooklyn goes Bossa Nova..........2005-11-17

Herbie Mann was a hip cat and he went were the music took him. In the mid sixties it took him and his flute to Brazil to embrace the samba sounds. This is a twofer from Collectibles; the original albums were released on Atlantic about a year apart. His recording with vocalist Tamiko Jones covers hits of the day, notably, the title tune (A Man and A Woman) from the French film of the same name. The other album is Mann's recording with Tom Jobim. Many of Jobim's tunes have been recorded by a whole host of artists, but in this set, it is Jobim singing and Mann playing. A fantastic CD, especially for those who love classic bossa nova.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite bossa nova cd's.......2005-07-18

I keep buying more bossa nova cd's (Best of Bossa Nova, Jazz Samba, Jazz Samba Encore, Wave, Jobim--The Composer Plays...) but this remains one of the tops. Hearing Jobim and Gal Costa trade off melodies in Wave, Dindi, the joyful bubbly poetry of Waters of March...this is great music. Chega de Saudade I already had on Sony's Compact Jazz recording, The Best of Bossa Nova. Now I get to hear the words to this incredible song. Samba Do Avião (Song of the Jet) is sung in Portuguese. I don't understand the words, but the melody stirs one and creates an angst in their heart. I can see person departing on a plane away from home and friends... The beautiful Corcovado, inspired by the statue of Christ the Redeemer on Corcovado Hill which Jobim could see from his apartment window.

There is not a bad song on this cd. It is recorded at the Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles and captures the excitement of the live setting.

4 out of 5 stars Imaginative Arrangements and Two Peerless Performers.......2000-09-23

Those of us whose hearts are stirred by the music of Brasil, whose breath comes a little short when the lush arrangements of Claus Ogerman swell behind vocals sung in Portugese, and whose eyes become just a little watery as the unique joy/sadness of love is captured in music will love this record.

The arrangements are not Ogerman's but pay tribute to them while permitting the listener a raised eyebrow here and there. The compositions are Jobim's, and therefore without peer. Finally, the voices are those of the composer himself and of Gal Costa, herself without peer as a vocalist and as a performer of Brasilian music. With all these elements in place, what could stand in the way of a special performance?

Nothing. This is an essential for any Brasilian collection.

4 out of 5 stars Good Compilatoin of Bossa Cuts.......2006-01-25

This is a compilation off of the Deja Vu label. It has a very heavy Italian influence in the cuts. I wish I could say more about the label or the series but there really isn't a great deal of information to go on - it was released back in 2001 so to get a feel of the sounds of that time as far as Italian bossa, the players were still the Irma label, Schema label and a slew of smaller labels.

The CD starts out with the full edit of Greyboy's "Mastered the Art", remixed by Nicola Conte. It was a pretty good remix when it came out which highlighted Gianlucca Petrella on Trombone - the cut was very big in 2002 as the Conte/Patrella style really took off. That was followed up with "The Vogado Project's "Mas Fuerte Que Al Sol". The guitar on this will remind you of Bebel Gilberto's "Samba e Amor" from back in 2000, but the cut has a basic beat with a classic Brazilian bossa rhythm in the background. Eddy & Dus's "Sina" comes next with some electoronica/nu-jazz over flute and Monica Nogueira's rare vocals. Later in the CD you have a classic S-Tone Inc. cut, "La Boca del Rio". Great song, although IMO the mood of the song was never really duplicated from the first time I heard it, off of "Pure Braziliance" some time ago. Duran & Garcia's "Round Midnite" follows nicely, a song popular on the electronic nu-jazz scene at this time. Dom Um Romao does some magical percussion work in "Sambao" and the CD doesn't lose energy in the end either, with Fragment Orchestra's "Carioca" capping off the journey with a pumped up nu-samba.

This is a capable compilation with some very good songs. It's a welcome change if you want a hint of what the Irma/Schema labels are about, yet want to hear something different from the Break & Bossa's or Sister Bossa's. You don't have the usual from either franchise (Banda Favela or straight Nicola Conte) and are subjected to some abstract sounds and music. But with that in mind, the cd wasn't without fault -a few cuts didn't grab me and it wasn't one I listened to without hitting the "FF" button. But it's still a nice compilation and could get you into those labels upon listening to it. If you do have this and loved it, please note that there is a second edition of this series out now that was put together by Gerardo Frisina.
