3 out of 5 stars Very good BUT....Improv in Liszt??.......2005-08-24

I find for the most part this is an excellent recording and "La Campanella" is breakthaking in its rhythmic dynamics and especially in the upper keyboard trills that are so much a part of this piece's intense virtuosity. I wish someone would reissue Gary Graffman's long out-of-print recording of this piece. I recall it being the best I ever heard.
Where I have serious reservations is in Dichter's playing of the etude "Un Sospiro". I am open to being corrected but where in the world did he come up with the insertion of a 4 or 5 bar improvisation before the recapitulation of the theme? I've never heard that before. But for overall GRAND Liszt playing, I agree with the on-line reviewers-nothing beats the Jorge Bolet recordings.

5 out of 5 stars Liszt presented in all his magnificence.......2005-01-03

There are a ton of great, well-known pieces on this 2-CD set, and it's a fantastic deal! Very beautiful in all respects except that, I agree with the reviewer below--the DB range of playing is not as wide or dynamic as it should be. It would be better if it was a bit HARDER and more powerful!--this is essential for the passion and intensity that Liszt created. Also, Mephisto Waltz seems to have been shortened. But all in all, good collection at a good price.

5 out of 5 stars Lisztmania.......2004-06-01

This Phillips label compact disc presents us with many fine works for piano by the incredible Franz Liszt (1811-1886) who together with Frederic Chopin revolutionzed the piano for the 19th century. On here are the Mephisto Waltz, Hungarian Rhapsodies No. 1-12, Etudes, Valses and transcriptions from Paganini's La Campanella and the Waltz from Gounod's opera Faust.
I like to think that the first cd, tracks 1-10 represents the softer side of Liszt. His friendship with Frederic Chopin influenced his lighter, romantic and nocturnal type of music, which are found in such works as Schwanengesang (Swan Song) "Un Sospiro" and Les Jeux D'Eux A La Villa D'Este. The second cd, tracks 1-10 represent some of the more dramatic and intense works for piano, among them the Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 in C Sharp Minor, which opens the second cd. The work has been orchestrated, it's polyphonic festive mood has been used in the Looney Tunes cartoons. It is meant to describe the folk dancing of Hungary. The Fantasia on the Waltz from Gounod's Faust is incredibly demanding and sweeping, beautiful in this rendition. All the works are performed by the piano artist Misha Dichter. Although to be quite honest, this is not the best of Franz Liszt per se. It only provides us with high quality piano works. But Liszt was more than a radical new pianist, he was also a fine orchestral conductor. He invented the symphonic poem, or tone poem, which was greatly used in the 19th century, influencing such composers as Tchaikovsky, Richard Wagner and Richard Strauss. Why did'nt they have Liszt's great symphonic poems the Dante Symphony and the Faust Symphony ? Also the Dance Of Death Totentanz should have been here, also his fantastic piano concerto. These days, it's hard to find a great interpreter of Franz Liszt. So much of his music is out of this world. It feels like only an octupus with millions of hands and fingers would aptly play his complex, multi-melodic score.

5 out of 5 stars Vital; impeccable; a treasure trove.......2002-10-17

I've lived with this CD, and similar Liszt CD's by artists of equal fame, for at least two years. My admiration -- my gratitude -- for this one rises with each listening. I believe that Liszt would be very grateful for these performances, could he hear them. It is difficult to imagine a pianist serving a composer more thoroughly than Dichter does here. There is no careless note, yet no faltering in momentum or vitality. Dichter has mastered the music, yet remains its servant. His performances of the few meditative pieces on this CD are as impeccable as his work on the many bravura ones; deeply felt, and tastefully expressed. This seems a treasure house to me; its length is 145 minutes. The engineers have depressed or compressed the dynamic range, I think; there is not enough difference between piano and forte for my taste... I am perhaps equally fond of Philips' 2-disc edition of Liszt's Annees de Pelerinage I-III, performed by Brendel and Kocsis, 289-462-312-2. Philips' 2-disc edition of Lizts's etudes, with Arrau and Magaloff, is of less interest to me at this time; I suppose this is my reaction to the compositions themselves.

3 out of 5 stars Good - but where's the poetry?.......2001-05-11

A very good and recommended recording. The only thing I miss is more lyricism. Traditionalists may argue that lyricism has little place in Liszt, but look and listen! There are lots of beautiful melodic passages that need carefull attention to phrasing and tone. It would make this recording milder and sweeter to the ear. But as far as the virtuosity is concerned, no complaints. But don't forget, you can only be flashy for so long before it gets dull....!

4 out of 5 stars A good "starter" package.......2004-12-25

I'm writing this review based on listening to only the samples from the album available on the Amazon site. THat may seem premature, however, I've heard most of the cuts on this record before, and back in the days when Sabicas was the king of the flamenco guitar I was one of the millions trying (and failing) to play like him, so I'm not completely without knowledge here - I studied his records.
A few of the cuts are from the greatest flamenco guitar solo album ever recorded "Flamenco Puro". This album is almost constantly out of print now. I've been trying off and on to get a copy for 20 years with no luck so far. If you can find it - buy it. If you hate it you will find someone to buy it from you. Trust me.
Numerous other cuts are duets with Diego Castilion, a man who would have been a star if he weren't the brother of Sabicas. Most flamenco duets of the era consist of one man doing his solos while a second fills in as if he were doing song accompaniment. The brothers worked out complex harmony arrangements that were to change the nature of flamenco guitar. There has been a lot of unfortunate fallout from this -- The Gypsy Kings and their 40 cd rhumba fest for example -- but when it is done right the sound is unbelievable.
The final cut is from another long out of print album with Sabicas and the great dancer Carman Amaya. This is an older recording, (early 50s possibly late 40s) so the sound is somewhat tinny, but it is a great performance. This is another one of those great albums someone should re-issue. I believe it might have been a US Decca recording though and very little of their stuff has ever re-appeared.

5 out of 5 stars Sabicas! Classic Flamenco.......2004-03-20

Sabicas or classic flamenco par excellence. How refreshing to listen to unadulterated Flamenco. No ugly background "orchestration", forget the Gipsy "King" commercial style flamenco and other tourist trap style music. This is it!

5 out of 5 stars Sabicas - the eternal master of the Flamenco guitar.......2000-06-28

There is none and has never been one like Sabicas, and this CD brings all of the drama and beauty of his guitar to you in a way no other can approach. When you hear his tremolo, his Soleares and Farrucas, you will imagine that he has twenty fingers instead of ten. This collection is by far the best I have ever heard in the years I have been listening to Sabicas, and unsuccessfully trying to emulate his skill. VIVA SABICAS in our memories and hearts. This disk will do just that!

Philips' 100-volume Great Pianists of the 20th Century series is one of the most ambitious projects ever put together by a record company. For all the debate that will surely ensue over who was chosen and who was passed over, it's obvious that careful, loving attention has gone into the selection of content for the happy 72 to be admitted to this special pantheon (certain especially significant pianists are allotted two or even three volumes, such as Vladimir Horowitz). Each of the handsomely designed, sepia-tinted volumes--adorned with a black and white photo--contains two CDs and a thoughtful essay on the artist in question. Prospective buyers should be aware that this sampler volume offers only short vignettes (averaging between two and three minutes), along with a thumbnail sketch, for each pianist. Still, it's a smorgasbord of morsels that allow you to taste some of the major trends in philosophy and approach to the instrument throughout the century (and reaching well back into the 19th), and the overlap of repertory permits some fascinating quick comparisons as style and technique have evolved. Delve into some of the artists in the series--say Alfred Brendel or Martha Argerich--and trace in greater depth the piano's identity crisis. Is it, for example, a resonantly string-like instrument ideal for pastel shadings or a steely, percussive machine meant to express the hardness of the 20th century? There are countless discoveries to be made here, both for the connoisseur and for anyone taking the first step into getting acquainted with great keyboard artistry. --Thomas May

5 out of 5 stars Tantalizing preview of good things to come.......2003-01-07

This is an introductory 2-CD set to introduce a very grand series of CD's featuring the 20th Century's greatest pianists.
As a sampler, there are some incredible jewels here, for example Nikita Magaloff's sparkling Chopin Tarantelle and Paganini Etude No.3: 'La Campanella' played excitingly by John Ogdon. There is even an early recording of Paderewski playing (predictably) Paderewski.

This sampler seems a bit of a Euro-centric, but the editors wisely chose to include Earl Wild doing Gershwin and Roslyn Tureck doing Bach. I ended up purchasing the Andre Watts volume from this series, and wondered what it would be like to own the whole shootin' match. I saw the entire CD series on display in a top notch music store in Germany--it was overwhelming to see the line of brown covers stretching impressively across an entire wall. The sampler is a good way to have a taste of this ambitious series of the giants of piano in the 20th Century. I listen to it often with great enjoyment.

4 out of 5 stars RE: Glenn Gould.......2001-05-23

RE: Those of you who complained/rejoiced about Gould's abscence: he is not on the sampler, true, I believe for... purposes or something along those lines. Rudolf Serkin is also not included, but both are among the "greatest pianists of the 20th Century" set.

5 out of 5 stars Missing no one except Katia Skanavi.......2001-04-19

I was pleased after reading the list of performers to see that Gould's machine-gun jiffy-pop piano "playing" is not included. I would like to hear more of Skanavi tho.

3 out of 5 stars Forget Somebody?.......2000-09-21

Although I understand that it must have been very diffiult to decide which pianists got put in the collection, let alone a two-disc sampler, I still feel that any anthology of the piano (other than one highlighting the romantic era)should contain at least one piece by Gould, yet this one doesn't. Gould has been almost unanimously hailed as one of the most influential artist of the twentieth century, yet he is not included on this disc. Other than that, a great buy.

5 out of 5 stars Unparalled Excellence (Mark G. Davis).......1999-08-01

If you only purchase one classical piano cd in your entire life, this one should be it. All the masters, at their very best on it.

If you have piano cd's, this should be part of that collection. I purchased one, almost not believing what I read on the jacket. I'm telling my friends about this one, as I'm aware of no other CD having all those piano masters - - at any price?)...

5 out of 5 stars Bargain-priced invitation into Liszt's Musical World.......2003-07-19

Leslie Howard's complete recording of Liszt's Piano Music is surely one of the great musical feats of all time, but not many people would have the desire or time to listen to the whole set. So it is a great thrill that Hyperion has made a 2 disk sampler set available for the rest of us!
It is beautifully packaged, competitively priced and includes interesting notes about Liszt and the works included by the performer himself.

Mr Howard has recorded 145 solo piano CDs, which includes the 95 CDs which make up the complete Liszt piano CDs.

The set includes many well-known pieces, as well as some interesting ones you may not be familiar with.

Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars The best of Howard's Liszt.......2002-11-11

This CD, while fulfilling the intent of covering every aspect of Liszt's piano music, also covers all of Leslie Howard's Liszt interpretations and pianistic style. Howard is one of my favorite pianists, and his best playing by far is on his recordings of the Liszt transcriptions of the Beethoven symphonies, which are not included here. However, anyone who wants to get into Liszt should buy this CD before they do anything else. It really is all-encompassing.

5 out of 5 stars Dad in Miami with 2 year old.......2007-07-30

My almost two-year old daughter loves the Parchis music and signs and dances to the songs. As I try to teach my daughter Spanish I count this DVD as a way of showing Spanish in another context. Also I think these young performers teach kid power.

The production quality is not great (for example, a camera man stands directly behind them in one of their performances) but this is part of the charm. The DVD includes songs they sang at various TV shows and even in the Estadio Azteca in Mexico. (I have seen pictures of a sold out concert there but the video shows the stadium only half full. Maybe it was a second concert.) The videos are taken towards the end of the group's run, when some were almost teenagers. The dance routines are OK by today's standards. The DVD menu is slow to come up and not entirely user friendly. The best thing is to just hit play and let all of the songs play.

Some great songs are of course the Parchis Song, Don Diablo (that very fun Miguel Bose song), Un Rayo de Sol, Hola Amigos, La Plaga, etc., etc.

We have been teaching our daughter that each of the Parchis members represents a different color on the Parchis board. The lead singer is la Ficha Roja (the red token). The two girls are la Ficha Amarilla (always very enthusiastic) and la Ficha Verde (her level of interest and energy in the songs she sings varies a lot). The two little kids are la Ficha Azul and the one in white , which I guess is not technically a ficha. These two are very energetic and fun to watch.

Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars Playing from a Different Era.......2007-07-07

Ignace Jan Paderewski was among the last of the 19th Century Romantic pianists, in the sense that textual "fidelity" took a second place to personal expression and tone. Even Rachmaninoff and Hofmann, both born in the 19th Century, favored a far less interventionist approach than Paderewski.

As has been pointed out, not all of the playing here is perfect. There are numerous technical slips and moments of caution. But it's worth remembering that tape editing was not available when these recordings were made. If the pianist was displeased with a take, the entire 78RPM side would have to be recorded again. Also, the note perfect esthetic came into vogue after Paderewski's time. Truth be told, there are no more wrong notes here than in many of Artur Schnabel's recordings.

It should be noted that one of the performances on this set, Liszt's La Leggierezza, is not actually by Paderewski. In one of the great blunders of recorded music, Phillips has included the performance by Benno Moiseiwitsch (which is also in their Moiseiwitsch volume).

The sound is faded, understandably. However, Paderewski's beautiful (one might even say, "old fashioned") sonority comes through on these transfers.

5 out of 5 stars Truly a treasure to behold........2006-06-10

Simply buy this great c.d. collection. This is without question the finest music you will ever listen to. Romantic, mesmerizing, and enchanting. These three adjectives describe the music of the great Paderewski. I hope you take the risk, as this music is a little pricey. Like a treasure chest waiting to be opened, this music is worth it's weight in gold. Wonderful! Wonderful!

5 out of 5 stars The Best of All Possible Chopinesque Worlds.......2004-12-29

I have played and heard innumerable variations on Chopin, and this is probably the best version to date. Paderewski's playing is luminous, he works in fine, detailed textures, uses the presence as well as the absence of emphasis to make very subtle musical points, (especially in the 'tristesse' etude and the raindrop prelude.) He will build up a phrase, create almost unberable anticipation and drop into an intimate whisper at the very moment in which one expects an emphatic declamation. His playing is very unimodal, in that each piece has but one true peak, and the fact that he uses crescendi, accents and even fortes so ascetically makes this peak seem monumental in proportion. Paderewski's arpeggiation of the first chord of the raindrop prelude is nothing short of a stroke of genius. He makes the slightly banal valse brilliante seem mysterious, alluring and so very interesting. In many ways, he is an immortal subjectivist - after a point, the notes cease to be Chopin and become pure Paderewski. I would liken his interpretation to Furtwangler. He has an uncanny sense of rubato, stretching the bar-lines like Kandinsky, but never crossing them. I recommend this very, very highly, as a music-critic and as an artist.

3 out of 5 stars Paderewski is gone for a reason..........2004-05-30

The recordings are fine and the playing is mediocre. He misses notes or total parts(simplification) and there are so many false notes its a shamble. The man was famous, but its pretty obvious he has no control after becoming a concert pianist when he was a full grown adult. If you want a real artist go for Hoffmann, Rachmaninoff, or at least somebody who is remembered for their great playing, not image. I give it a three because of his mediocre playing(one star for the playing and two for the fancy jacket)...

5 out of 5 stars Best in the series, the ultimate 20th century pianist........1999-07-27

This is the best volume in the Great Pianists of the 20 century series. The playing is a revelation, exquisite, lyrical, and always profound. Each piece is played with a unique sensitivity and disregard for virtuosity. Only having heard of Paderewski, almost as a legend, it is breathtaking to finally behold this "ultimate pianist". It is even more breathtaking, when one realizes every recording was done in one take, years before modern tape editing techniques. (A modern CD of one hour may actually be made from many hours of tapes and remixed, creating marvelous recordings that never really happened, something more like sculpture than musical performance.) The beauty of tone even on these somewhat "hissy" older recordings is a wonder to hear. The Chopin selections makes one seem to hear their beauty again for the first time, more beautiful than any modern recording. The Liszt selections are fantastic. The famous Liszt second rhapsody is done in a lyric non-virtuosic cantabile style that is ravishing with meaning and beauty in every note, a new color every second. It is the ultimate second rhapsody done with pure musicality and avoiding technical excesses. He plays the music, not just Lisztian cadenzas with stuff in between like most modern virtuosos. He makes a beautiful Hungarian tone poem, not a virtuoso exercise in octaves and velocity. Paderewski always strives for beauty of tone and expression and seems to be uninterested in modern pyrotechnics. This is really a must for anyone who loves piano music, a real sojourn back to the days of Liszt and Chopin. Music like it was supposed to be.

3 out of 5 stars Cziffra's technique - good for his ego or good for the music?.......2007-02-10

Cziffra's technique is simply amazing -- his passagework is incredibly clear and well-articulated and he plays with supreme accuracy. Yet this is a boring and ultimately stultifying group of recordings. After about 1/2 hour, I began to wonder what exactly was Cziffra's problem. A lot of guys drive motorcycles or fast cars; Cziffra plays difficult music. The motivation seems the same.

I acquired this set for the Chopin Etudes. My initial reaction was a "wow", prompted by Cziffra's technique. By the beginning of the Op 25 set, I was getting really annoyed. By the end, I'd given up on him. I'll never listen to it again. The Cherkassky recordings (also on the Philips set) is much superior and the Pollini set is better, too. It's hard to explain why Cziffra's interpretation is so unsuccessful, because the guy is musical and I actually liked some of his interpretational touches quite a bit. But the over-the-top triple fff exaggerations of every loud passage and the intensely aggressive approach to each and every piece (Cziffra must have thought lyricism was for wimps) just ends up ruining the music.

Cziffra plays some interesting and unusual Liszt on this set. That's a plus. But the playing on the Liszt isn't any better than the Chopin.

    5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Phenomenal. 10 stars.......2005-10-18

The recording is good (some reviewers often indicate exceptional pianists with horrible, very old recordings)
    I like good recordings.

Many years ago, I listened a Beethoven's sonata interpreted by one of the greatest pianists of the world. I felt his virtuosistic interpretation did not convey much emotion. In that sonata, (it seemed to me) he was worried mainly about pyrotechnics.

Cziffra has the most impressive piano technique I could listen to and sometimes he plays very quickly.

What impressed me the most was that even at super fast velocities, he IS ABLE TO CONVEY EMOTION because he controls what notes to "sing" and the pressure he needs to put at each key. (Listen op 25 n.1 for example where, at that velocity, I thought his interpretation would be only pyrotechnical. Surprise!).

Besides, I liked very much to see a pianist that has interpretive creativity, that is, he is not constrained to "the conventional way of interpretation".

He was a superb artist, so that he could choose what notes to emphasize.(etude op.25 n1)

Quickly, I bought the last album with international shipping available from Amazon.

Now, listen the Chopin etudes samples (ex: op25, n.2) and tell me if you know someone that can beat his technique.

    Very Impressive.

3 out of 5 stars Don't quite get the reputation of these recordings..........2004-07-04

I was prepared to be blown away. I was *hoping* to be blown away. The on-going quest for a "perfect" set of Chopin Etudes never stops. But there's more to these works than show and speed. The moments of color, of poetry, of mystery and drama, are not there. The big bangy Etudes are impressive, but the others, such as Nos. 3, 5, and 6 of Op. 10, and No. 3 of Op. 25, lack poetry and are too "straight-forward" for my taste. The mysterious, spooky qualities of No. 7 in Op. 25 aren't there. There's little in the way of dynamics in many of these works, No. 1 of Op. 25 is a good example. And as far as the virtuoso label goes, while No. 4 of Op. 10 starts out the gate at an amazing pace, it becomes unraveled and the lack of rhythm reminds me of Schnabel trying to play very fast, actually. And his interpretation of the "Winter Wind" prelude is a bit unconventional; I'm not sure if I like it, though I definitely wouldn't want to hear it this way every day. You'll have to decide for yourself.

Most of all, though, my problem is with Cziffra's tonal pallet, or lack of it. I didn't expect Cortot, but I do expect more than I get here, which, formidable technique aside, sounds very unremarkable, indistinguishable from any modern piano student.

I haven't listened to the other disc, of Liszt. I'm going to give this another try, but overall these are too monochrome, too driven, too "when all else fails, floor it!" to have a place of honor on my shelf. The quest for a great complete cycle of Chopin Etudes continues.

5 out of 5 stars SOME KIND OF ULTIMATE.......2003-08-12

I guess that if you like Horowitz you will like Cziffra. His career was all too short, ending abruptly on the tragic death of his son. He was a Hungarian gipsy born in 1921 and dying in 1991, the year that also saw Serkin, Kempff and Arrau summoned away in short order. By now I have lost track of the pianists I have seen described as ultimate technicians -- Hofmann, Rachmaninoff, Horowitz, Michelangeli, Argerich, Pollini, Gavrilov, Kissin and of course the obligatory Richter among others. My own two finalists in that particular competition would be Michelangeli and Cziffra. Michelangeli is sui generis, a different pianistic animal from any of the others. Cziffra is in something like the 19th century virtuoso tradition as I know it from Hofmann and Rachmaninoff. Speeds are typically fast, as they were from Rachmaninoff, and virtuosity is a key element in Cziffra's way of expressing the music. This is entirely as it should be in my opinion. When Cziffra's career was at its height something dangerously like staidness was in vogue, and something known as 'virtuosity for its own sake' was widely viewed as a Bad Thing. I have never even known what it was supposed to be, let alone why it was such a bad thing, but I recall Cziffra falling foul of this particular critical waffle, and it goes a long way to explain why he is not better known. Anyway Cziffra treated technical brilliance as an integral part of the musical expression in certain pieces, and rightly so say I. Why playing brilliant pieces in an unbrilliant way should be considered a plus for expressiveness is the bit I have never understood.
The recorded sound is rather hard in the Chopin studies, much better in the Polonaise, where it is interesting to compare him with Horowitz. In the middle section both are absolutely dumbfounding, the main difference being that Cziffra does not go through his tone as Horowitz does. This was something that Horowitz carried off with aplomb, but something everyone else has had the good sense not to copy. Where I like Cziffra very much better is at the start, where Horowitz deploys a peculiar dry touch that he was sometimes prone to adopt on inappropriate occasions. Rubinstein pedals heavily here, which is fine by me, but Cziffra's finger-legato is easily the best way. In the studies I would not say that I prefer Cziffra to the fine sets by Ashkenazy (here at his all-too-rare best) or Pollini. It's near-impossible to rank three such players in 24 short pieces. What I would ask you not to believe is the booklet, which nearly falls into the 'virtuosity for its own sake' morass. There is plenty of soul and expressiveness from Cziffra here, although the hard recorded sound doesn't help. I don't believe, for instance, that Cziffra banged at the bass in the 'butterfly' study or the one in sixths the way he comes across as recorded here.

In the Liszt pieces if you take away the virtuosity there is little or nothing left, but virtuosity plus belief like this almost had me taking them seriously as music, which is saying a lot. They are simply astounding, and I apologise for using such a term to anyone who is as weary of it as I am. This time it's true. In the very last resort Cziffra seems to me even more of a virtuoso wonder than Horowitz, and this playing is full of heart, soul and fire. I do not know whether as a Hungarian Cziffra represents some specially authentic Lisztian tradition. What I do know is that he does more for Liszt as far as I am concerned than anyone else has ever done.

There is actually an account of the op25 Chopin studies that is surprisingly like Cziffra's. It is a historical reissue, it is not madly well recorded, and it comes from a quarter you might not expect. It is by Serkin, and it comes with the new biography of him issued earlier this year.

5 out of 5 stars Original, stormy, facsinating.......2002-01-28

Cziffra is considered chiefly as a Liszt interpreter, but I don't like Liszt at all, and the piano pieces in disc 1 are no better than other Liszt works. The main issue is the Chopin etudes. Cziffra lights the fire from the first etude, and the whole series sounds like one sweeping storm. You forgive his capricious playing, since the outcome is irresistable. Recommended only for those who are already acquainted with more conservative performances of the etudes. so they can appreciate the difference.
