Okay, so maybe about thirty songs are left out. Who cares? This is the best compilation of the best Ramones tunes done EVER. They embodied the assault against early 70s hippiedom leftovers. They played as loudly as quickly as possible. They didn't mind "yeah, yeah, yeah," or "oh, baby," or "gabba gabba hey". They rocked. Most everyone else didn't. Forget the pretentious liner notes that come with this. Put it in your cd player and crank this baby up!

This was my first Ramones CD. It's chopped full of songs that go from great to (sadly)not so great. But if you want to start getting into The Ramones, this is deffidently the place to start(either this or Loud Fast Ramones: Their Toughest Hits). I'll review some selected tracks.

As good as this is, it is missing some stuff. First of all, it only has 3 songs from the S/T record. I wish they'd included Judy Is A Punk or Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue or 53rd and 3rd. That would've been great.
But all in all, this is a great CD.

RAMONES MANIA means well, but it's biggest flaw is that it's not ALL THE STUFF (AND MORE), VOL.'S 1 and 2. Granted, thirty selections on one disc that's 76 minutes long is nothin' to sneeze at, but too many late entry numbers lack the high energy and dumb fun lyrics of the first few indispensable elpees (of which STUFF 1 and 2 are entirely comprised). Next to expected bubble-rock class-sicks BLITZGRIEG BOP, TEENAGE LOBOTOMY, SHEENA IS A ROCKER, I WANNA BE SEDATED, and ROCKAWAY BEACH, latter day efforts HOWLIN' AT THE MOON (SHA-LA-LA) and ANIMAL BOY run outta gas fast. At least ROCK 'N' ROLL HIGH SCHOOL and DO YOU REMEMBER ROCK 'N' ROLL RADIO? are joyfully nostalgic excursions, and Joey Ramones' earnest take on the 1910 Fruitgum Company's INDIAN GIVER is a thing of rare beauty. But trust me: a quick trip on their ROCKET TO RUSSIA is much better than HOWLIN' AT THE MOON (SHA-LA-LA). So, Hey! Ho!! Let's Go!!! RATING: THREE GABBA GABBA HEYS

....then you probably don't have a pulse. Every song is eminently danceable, and the band never sounded tighter. What's amazing is that is not a compilation CD, it was an album released in 1958, a true CLASSIC.

5 out of 5 stars Pure BIG Band Salsa.......2003-05-25

This is true big band sound salsa, before the name salsa became popular. Originally released in 1958, You can go back and feel how great this music was back then and still feel the how great it still is today. This tells you this is a treasure chest of great music. Just enjoy and dance as if he is playing at the good old days at the Palladium Dance night,in NYC. The recordings allow you to hear clearly every instrument that was played and precise harmony of the full orchestra. Be carefull playing this while driving in the car, you will be force to pull over and dance a few cuts.

5 out of 5 stars It doesn't get better than this!.......2003-03-07

One of Tito's tightest and most soulful albums, with sharp-sounding horn charts and funky rhythms galore. Recording with the full technical expertise of the RCA studios behind him, Puente's late '50s albums had much richer, better defined sound than competitors on smaller, independent labels, and the brass tones that distort into distorted shrillness on other albums are smooth and clear here. Great material, and a ton of tight session players who were the cream of the crop in the latin dance scene. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2001-12-12

A must for anyone looking for a good sample of some classic mambos, jazz suites, and one bolero from Tito.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Tito!.......1999-11-28

I'm not a mambo or or latin music aficionado, but if you just want a fun, upbeat, latin album by this music legend then I recommend this one! I love it!

Pure Mania is a terrific relic of the punk era by a London band that owes much more to the Ramones than the Sex Pistols. Light on anger and nihilism but heavy on humor and fun, it's a blitz of twisted love songs ("Sweet Sweet Heart," Wrecked on You," etc.) with an ode to bondage thrown in for good measure. Label it music to shake your brains to. The Vibrators apparently thought they were playing pop music for the end of the decade (the '70s, that is), oblivious to the fact that the masses (especially in America) could never have been expected to catch on. That doesn't mean you shouldn't. --Mike Corrigan

5 out of 5 stars Classic Punk .......2007-06-28

Baby, Baby is one of my favorite songs on this CD!!! To omit it would be a sin. The structure, sound and style of the gutar solo in that song is classic punk. If you're a guitarist, figure out the solo and you'll see what I mean. The whole CD is great!!!

5 out of 5 stars I had no idea in 1977!.......2006-12-14

Yep, that's when I bought the original LP version of this album. Back in Jr High I was listening to anything loud -- Nugent, Sex Pistols, Black Sabbath, it mattered not -- and I grabbed this one out of the bargain bin at my local record store just because it looked like it would hurt my stereo speakers. Thought it was pretty good then. But it wasn't until college that I started to get some musical sense, and really began to appreciate what a fine album this really is. Each track is tight, bright, and still as hard as steel-toed boots. My advice is to listen to it the way I used to listen to the vinyl: play side two (starting with Petrol, which has a great opening kick), build up to the blazing finish of Wrecked on You, I Need a Slave, and Bad Time (three songs played without a pause to flick off the sweat and breathe), then flip to side one and play the whole thing from start to finish. You will keep cranking it up, and one and a half times through will not be enough.

For those who'd like to dig further, I bought many of the their later releases on vinyl as well, and there are plenty more great tracks there too.

5 out of 5 stars Vibrator's.......2005-06-19

I think Hangar Eighteen summed things up best. As for the negative review I can understand that one too. I was somewhat unimpressed on first listen and the anti-drug sentiment and lack of rebelliosness did put me off a bit, but after living with this album for a while I can say nothing generates as much fun and pleasure as this one. I even love the preachy "Stay Clean". It could be my favorite album of all time if the lyrics were a bit raunchier, but even with that shortcoming it always gets played when I need an adrenaline rush and it has a lot of tough competition as I have 1000's of CD's(just mentioned so the reader knows it ain't easy to get played). Right now it is in my top 10 list of favorite CD's as well. A punk classic.

5 out of 5 stars Marvelous blast of blues tinged pogo.......2005-05-01

This CD is magical, and one of the few blues infused cocktails served up in punk '77. The band must have been playing twelve bar tripe around London for years -they are tight! -and one day they discovered punk. Well, what do we do now, mates? Try as they might, the blues licks are still there, emerging from the delicious chord structures at just the right emotional high point. "Baby baby baby" could have been either shortened or left off the CD. Otherwise, this piece of musical history is perfect.

5 out of 5 stars One of the first, one of the best.......2005-03-10

When me and my friends "discovered" punk rock way back in 1979 along with records from The Sex Pistols, Ramones, Television, Stranglers, The Damned there was Pure Mania from the Vibrators.
A true reference of the british 77 period. Powerful and melodic Fender Precision bass playing, stomping, clean and suculent drum in chugging 4/4 patterns with tasty hi-hat, and fat, proficient guitar playing with vocals being swapped with lots of melody and punk snarl.
Much more musical than the subsequent wave of punk as much of the first wave brit acts was.
Wanna get good true 77 brit punk rock? Pure Mania is definetely a ticket.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great CD!!.......2006-12-10

First, the positive review of what I have heard from my new CD. They picked a great list of songs. "Silent Lucidity" is my favorite because Geoff Tate can sing absolutely ANYTHING, no matter what! And it's about time that "Ballad of Jayne" by L.A. Guns was properly put where it belongs, and not ignored. From the many awesome Great White ballads, they picked the best.

Ok, now for the criticism. Night Ranger and Alias should not have even been selected for this CD. And "The Way It Is" by Tesla was the absolute wrong song to add. "Love Song" was the most popular ballad by them, and it should have been on this CD. I was highly disappointed with that choice. "When the Children Cry" was not even sung in tune with the original at all. I didnt even know what song it was until the chorus.

But overall, I was happy with this CD and would suggest it to all the power ballad lovers out there.

2 out of 5 stars give me a break.....Metal???.......2006-01-14

This is not metal, it's old school rock and roll. Yes, it's all good music by very talented artists, but it is NOT Metal. It's not even heavy ROCK for pity's sake, yes, it's sappy ballads...

4 out of 5 stars Great Alubm, but "Metal" and "Mania"?!?.......2006-01-03

I really like this album...but another reviewer has it right, it's simply another metal ballads compiliation...albeit a VERY good one. Each song is a really inspired take on the original, some in intimate performance settings, others apparently in studio. The only song that didn't impress me much was Extreme's "More Than Words", but being an accoustic song to begin with, all they could really do is an a cappella version...which didn't impress me much.
If you are a child of the 80's hair-band, metal, and stoner music era, this is an album you will likely enjoy. It's ill-thought out sequel is *NOT* on my suggested disc list, so be thorough in your pre-purchase consideration.
As a hobbyist guitar player, I really enjoy hearing the different takes on these songs. Definitely on my favorites list!

5 out of 5 stars Acoustic power ballads.......2005-09-08

Some don't like metal associated with 80's hair rock power ballads, hey whatever. Very good acoustic performances give a new life to classics from the past. VH1 might have considered a more definitive title for this collection though.

3 out of 5 stars Lacks original feel.......2005-08-13

Not too bad of a set list, but some of the songs lack the original feel. The main ones are: Don't Know What You Got (Until it's Gone) by Cinderella and When the Children Cry (White Lion). Children Cry was a dissapointment. The original had feeling in the tone, structure, and melody. In this version, M. Tramp sounds bored.
When I Look Into Your Eyes is still lame, and I mean lyric wise. I swear if I knew better, thos words were written by a 4th or 5th grader. However, the vocals on it are powerful.
They could have chosen a better song than I Saw Red for Warrant. That version is available on their greatest hits cd. The one they should have added was the acoustic version of Blind Faith. Wow, that was so much better than the original. You have to buy the single of We Will Rock You in order to hear it, and it is worth trying to find a copy.
Silent Lucidity sounds really good, as to my surprise, Sister Christian by Night Ranger. I was never a fan, but eh...the song is decent. His voice sounds a little raspy, but doesn't hinder the tune.
More than Words by Extreme is without the guitar...and...it works, mainly because it is a dominant vocal song.
Tesla's tune doesn't belong on there. It's a filler. I know they had better ballads than that one. That also knocked a whole star for me. Fillers are common, but when it's picking greatest hits type cd's, there is no reason for filler.
Overall sound quality is good...some songs are low such as Poison's Every Rose, but that's because it was recorded back in 1991 on MTV Unplugged. Oh well, I heard there is a DVD coming out...should be interesting.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Metal Mania!!!!.......2007-03-15

I remember when I was younger rockin' out hardcore to some 80s metal. It was one of the highlights of my childhood looking back. I was definitely excited to hear them "stripped". It was an amazing compilation of the songs I grew up on as well as the more mellow sound I've grown accustomed to lately. It was a major mix of nostalgia and excitement that took me back to a time when I had no worries. I highly recommened you pick this one up for a trip down memory lane.

4 out of 5 stars Nelson's version is awesome!.......2006-09-15

If you like Big Hair, this is a must have, even if for no other reason than to round out your collection. I have to say, Nelson's version of Love and Affection is awesome...should be on the radio now.

4 out of 5 stars 80's hair metal unplugged.......2006-09-09

With Metal Mania Stripped Vol.2 you many 80's hair metal classics served up acoustically. While none of the songs improve upon the original versions, this cd does make for an enjoyable listen. The songs lose the powerful feel that many of the originals had and go for the intimate feel. Some of the highlights are: Here I Go Again, Talk Dirty to Me, Heaven's Tail, Once Bitten, Twice Shy. I didn't really care for Round and Round, done in this way, but for the most part this is an enjoyable cd. The cd will mainly interest fans of the 80's hair metal genre.

4 out of 5 stars A fun album..........2006-02-19

...especially if you like anachronistic covers. Okay, they're not covers per se, they're rerecordings by the original artists, acoustic-style. Still, mellow hair metal has its charm, mainly as a guilty pleasure.

1 out of 5 stars I was hoping for Slayer to come in punch them all........2006-02-10

Do you remember MTV Unplugged? Do you remember watching your favorite bands absolutely embarrass themselves in front of coffee sipping yuppies who could only see these bands in this kind of venue because they know they'd get their tail kicked at a real show? Well, in case you forgot, now you can buy that same atrocity here and relive those magical years.

There's a reason MTV Unplugged isnt around and this CD proves it. Just listen to the samples here first before you give away your hard earned minimum-wage money.

3 out of 5 stars Acoustic redo of 80s hair rock.......2007-04-13

You have to dig hearing these classics in a fresh version. Accept's Balls to the Wall is just haunting. One major oversight is Firehouse's When I Look into Your Eyes, that was a repeat from Vol.1 and makes this lose a star.

4 out of 5 stars Great gift!.......2007-04-10

I ordered this for my boyfriend who had the other 2 previous volumes. It completes his collection and he loves it!

5 out of 5 stars 80's hair bands.......2007-04-06

If you are a 80's hair band fan and want to hear them unplugged= this along with volume 1 and 2 are what you need!

3 out of 5 stars Hit or Miss.......2007-03-15

I'm a fan of all 3 of these CDs as I like of the bands on them. Like the other 2, I find this one to be pretty much hit or miss as well. I think the best new tracks are Tommy and Jack's High Enough, Eric Martin's Just Take My Heart and Autograph's Turn Up The Radio. Eric Martin still has the voice to pull off probably every song in Mr. Big's catalog acoustically. Some of the new tracks are still really good like Jani's Heaven and Kix' track. Other tracks have been offered up before from various sources so who hasn't heard Tesla's Signs a million times and seen Poison's MTV Unplugged show?

Low points on this compilation for me are what I consider to be one of the worst tracks I've heard in years in Slaughter's Up All Night. It's from a live performance and it's just dreadful. I don't know how this even made it onto this CD, it's laughable. William Hung could have done better with this track. I don't think Ratt's Way Cool Jr is much better.

Very odd arangement for Accept's Balls To the Wall, but it's not bad... just unexpected.

Again, like the other 2 CDs in this series there are several new gems, some re-releases and some garbage. For fans of the genre like me, I think they're a lot of fun though.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting Restrospective.......2007-07-12

I suppose these song's were hand picked by Foster himself, but my best of if you will would include a whole different list of my favs. I do own most of their earlier work, thanks to a friend of mine who turned me onto them about 15 years ago or so, I remember listening to the cassette of "My Brain Hurts" over and over and wanting more.

Anyway, starting with "Boogada" I would have a track list like this:
This ain't Hawaii
I Hate Led Zeppelin
Sunshine
Slogans
Guest List
I Can Se Clearly
Cindy's On Methadone
The Science Of Myth
My Brain Hurts
Hanging Around
One Step Beyond
Crying In My Beer
Automatic Rejector
Jeannie's Got A Problem
Sad Little Girl
Going Home
Falling Apart
Talk To Me Summer
Every Night
Claire Monet
A New Tomorrow
Johnny Are You Queer?
Burnout Girl
If I Was You
Surf Goddess
You Blister My Paint
It's Not Enough
Around On You

As I stated, most of the stuff I know is from the earlier works, and I do tend to enjoy more of the pop-punk songs more than the more hardcore songs they threw on many of their CD's, so these are mostly the more mellow side that I liked the best about them. If I remember correctly, SW and Green Day were pretty close to coming out at the same time in the late 80's/early 90's, and I remember getting "Dookie" by Green Day also along with my Weasel Cd's. And the sound of a band like Screeching Weasel to me anyway was a few years before Blink 182 would hit the scene, and to me that band was pretty much doing the same thing (or somewhat very similar if you will) to these bands. The pop punk thing got popularized by the Blink 182, but it was bands like Screeching Weasel and Green Day who had it mastered back in the early 90's, and that was the direction I hoped that SW would keep heading, but Ben seemed bent on giving them that more punk sound at times, there seemed to be two camps; the ones who liked the pop punk, and the ones who wanted the more hardcore skater punk sound I guess and it seemed to drag this band down, to me they should have stuck with the popppier, catchier songs....they are still fast and hard rock at times, with tinges of punk, you cannot deny the Weasel nasal delivery as sounding a bit punk anyway perhaps.

Overall, a nice selection of songs here. Fine introduction to the band and retrospective perhaps, check out a few of their earlier works and see how that grabs you, I think you may enjoy just about everything they put out in some way or another...at times the off balance attack they put on each CD does become familiar, if anything it does not become stale, so perhaps I'm asking too much with my track list, perhaps it won't work...but I like it alot.

4 out of 5 stars A collection of Screeching Weasel's finest........2005-10-12

During my high school years, the soundtrack to my life consisted of very heavy doses of Chicago-based pop-punk band Screeching Weasel.

Albums like "My Brain Hurts" and "Anthem for a New Tomorrow" were staples of my adolesence. Many of frontman Ben Foster's (aka Ben Weasel) songs guided me through the toughest times of my young adult life.

The band never really broke any new ground musically, drawing most of their influence from The Ramones and other simple three-chord punk rock bands like The Descendents and the Angry Samoans.

Screeching Weasel has broken-up and reformed more times that I could keep track of. They rarely play shows and they have not toured the U.S. in well over a decade. Despite this, they have a huge cult following and have released over 10 albums, including a handful of EPs and b-side compilations.

Their line-up has been a revolving door, aside from Foster, featuring a veritable "who's who" of punk rock musicians. For example, Green Day bassist Mike Dirnt stepped up and took on the bass duties for the "How to Make Enemies and Irritate People" record.

After nearly two decades, Screeching Weasel finally has a greatest hits album thanks to the folks at Fat Wreck Chords.

"Weasel Mania," a clever take on The Ramones' best-of title, crams 34 songs onto one disc, each tune hand picked by Foster himself.

The songs span the band's entire career, from early tracks like "My Right," which kicks off the compilation, to "Bottom of the 9th" from the band's final studio release.

I was pleased to hear that some Weasel classics like "She's Giving Me the Creeps" and "Joanie Loves Johnny" made their way onto the tracklist.

Some of the bands later songs, like "Speed of Mutation," which may be my all-time favorite Weasel tune, stand up quite well against their older tracks. I t would have nice to hear more from 1998's awesome "Television City Dream" record and less from weaker albums like "Emo" and "Teen Punks in Heat."

In total, two or three songs from each release made it onto "Weasel Mania."

The CD booklet features some nifty goodies for the fans, including new photos and stories from the band members, along with the typical rambling essay by Foster that has become pretty much expected on any Weasel compilation.

If you're not familiar with Screeching Weasel this would be a solid place to start, but there really is not much incentive for a hardcore fan to pick it up. There are no new songs and everything sounds just as it did on the original releases.

As cool as some of the stuff in the booklet is, it's not worth the price for that alone. Some sort of extra like enchanced capabilities or a bonus DVD would have made this a much more tempting purchase for Weasel completists.

Regardless, if your idea of pop-punk is bands like Good Charlotte and Simple Plan, pick this up and prepare yourself for a brash history lesson in what the genre is truly all about.

5 out of 5 stars Great compilation from punk rock legends.......2005-10-09

Although a slew of other bands found greater mass exposure via MTV or the Warped Tour, make no mistake, Screeching Weasel was as important to the 90's punk boom as any band. If one needs proof, this is a great place to start. These 34 tracks cover nine albums, two non-album song compilations, and an ep, along with another compilation track. More importantly, they show a band that shined through simplicity. Great songs were always more important than self-indulgent musicianship. They had the fun that stupid little punk songs should. Still, years after most of these songs were released they really hold up well. A few interesting omissions aside, the track list of Weasel Mania is amazing. This release is essential for both new listeners and longtime fans in search of a cheap disc with lots of longtime favorites.

2 out of 5 stars Great Sound, No Substance.......2006-02-24

Much of contemporary music (by composers who are still active) have little going for it other than individuality. Salonen knows how to work the orchestra and he produces some astonishing sounds. The music is indeed original, even if does on occasion sound a little like Rautavaara. But the Variations seem disjointed with one dazzling episode following another with any sense of continuity or cogency. It seems that the Variations would be just as effective if it were ordered randomly. The music isn't academic, but one comes away with the impression that the work could be a series of unrelated examples from an advanced orchestration textbook. Ultimately the music is highly individual, but unmemorable. Great performances though.

3 out of 5 stars interesting stuff.......2003-03-05

I really like this disc. I listen to a lot of orchestral music, but very little of it Modernism (or post-Modernism, or post-post-Modernism, or whatever era it is Salonen belongs to). These pieces range from vaguely tonal to freely atonal, and are quite dissonant in either case (though never stridently so). Yet Salonen's ideas are compelling and are presented and developed with clarity; the lines are not at all difficult to follow and the architecture of each piece is intelligently conceived and constructed. The orchestration is often quite striking and the performances are very good. I think Giro, Mania, and Gambit are excellent; the jury is still out on L.A. Variations, and I didn't like Five Images After Sappho at all. Were I more familiar with this kind of music - and once I've listened to this particular disc a few more times - my rating may well increase to a four out of five.

5 out of 5 stars Esa-Pekka Salonen: a great conductor...and a great composer.......2002-08-05

Wait a minute...isn't he just a conductor? No, this Finnish-born conductor is also a composer. This CD is his first release and it contains 5 world premiere recordings. Salonen has always been a promoter of new music and now he shows us what he can do. The three orchestral works are diverse and show off the ability of the ensemble he conducts full time. Dawn Upshaw, soprano, and Anssi Karttunen, cello, grace this CD as featured soloists on two of the pieces. Dawn Upshaw sings beautifully on Salonen's "Five Images After Sappho." The Ojai Festival and the London Sinfonietta commissioned this work. Anssi Karttunen, for whom this work was composed, performs "Mania" for violoncello solo and ensemble.

This CD is a great companion to the (also) Finnish-born composer Kaija Saariaho's recording of Graal Theatre, Chateau De L'ame, and Amers.

1 out of 5 stars more new sounding music.......2002-06-08

This is more new music by a mediocre conductor and composer. Lucky to have employment in america, probably most likely because of his foreign lineage.
Salonene shows that he has, by studying others techniques, the ability to write music; but what is his point?
The playing on this cd is very good, but the lack of expression and color is sad, and hopefully he will just get better with time.

5 out of 5 stars They have something going on.......2002-06-01

Salonen, Lindberg and Saariaho is a triptych "gang" of clever, brilliant composers from my neighbor country Finland and if you like postmodern classical music you should check ALL three of them out (these three mentioned above often "sit in" or help each other in one way or another).

This is a stunning record and Salonens five songs (beutiful singing from D. Upshaw on those 5 songs) are something special.

This disc has almost everything. A criteria for... well maybe not a genuis but def. a very good, innovative composer.

Salonen is a good conductor and also an extremly talanted composer.

A must disc. This is something extraordanary in the postmodern classical music area.
