Key to the success of this prime-time teen soap opera has been a mix of contemporary rock and pop that musically embroiders the show's increasingly complex mix of hope, fear, and youthful angst with often melodramatic flair. This third volume of songs from the successful series continues in that tradition while, as the title suggests, exploring a little wider artistic range. "Don't Wait" by Dashboard Confessional and the Honorary Title's "Stay Away" immediately anchor the set with a familiar tone of urgency, while star Tyler Hilton offers up another expected sensitive acoustic ballad in "You'll Ask for Me." But elsewhere, the collection admirably pushes the envelope via such tasty, eclectic morsels as the infectious pop of the Kooks' "Naïve," Gym Class Heroes turning "Good Vibrations" into a stripped-down shuffle, and the effusive hip-hop-pop of Lupe Fiasco's "I Gotcha." But it's still a collection centered largely on the contemplative, indie spirit embodied by the Wreckers' gorgeous "Lay Me Down," Lucero's emotive dirge "Tell Me What It Takes," and the Constantines' similarly focused "Soon Enough." --Jerry McCulley

Album Description

For the first time in television history, a mixtape heard in an episode will become a soundtrack album. Containing hits from artists such as Lupe Fiasco, Dashboard Confessional and The Wreckers, The Road Trip is another innovative musical breakthrough for a series that continues to be an indie showcase.

3 out of 5 stars Better than what I first thought.......2007-07-20

There are some pretty awesome songs on here but alot of them sound very similar. I'd only buy it if you're an avid fan of One Tree Hill

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for the Road.......2007-06-14

I loved this disk from the first time I listened to it, but I had to know if it worked out on the road. I took a road trip from southern Kansas up to the NE part of the state playing this cd, and I fell in love all over again. Anybody who's gone thru Kansas knows what the landscape looks like, and it made the perfect backdrop to the music.
Hands down La Rocca's "Non-Believer," The Weepies "World Spins Madly On," and Band of Horses' "Funeral" are the best tracks on the album. Those songs alone are worth buying the cd for.

5 out of 5 stars Awesomeness.......2007-06-10

It's a great CD! There's not a song I don't like. Tyler's new song is a must be hit. The Weepies are always a good addition.

That's what I like about the OTH soundtracks. They're not filled with "what's now" hot in the music scene, but rather songs that can be listened to over and over, because you're not going to always hear them on the radio.

4 out of 5 stars the perfect follow up,hope there'll be a fourth..........2007-04-12

I admit,I love the show, but overall,it music and of couse it soundtracks, but I must say that some of the choices made for the track selection are a little too easy:
Don't wait : way to obvious choice but great though. The perfect song to start the CD with. 4,5/5
stay away : not the best from the band, but after listening to it several times you get used to it. 4/5
naive : good choice, siuts very well with the show itself, but not so good song. 3/5
the funeral : one of the highlight from the CD,great choice!....5/5
heartbeats : just the same as naive, but a good song. 3.5/5
you'll ask me : not his best by far and I must say that I get a little tired of him.
i gotcha : not the usual OTH tune but really great choice, second highlight. 5/5
good vibrations : way too much Citizen Cope vibes for me,but an OK song. 4/5
lay me down : third highlight, love the band and Michelle Branch. 5/5
soon enough : beautiful song but unnoticed, too bad. 3/5
he lays in the rein : fourth highlight, such a beautiful and lyrical song. 5/5
tell me what it takes : the same as soon enough, plus the song's not so good as for the band which is supposed to be one of Luca's favorite...2.5/5
just be simple : could have been a highlight but way too obvious and passe choice. 4.5/5
world spins madly on : love the band ad the song, fifth highlight. 5/5
non-believer : the perfect choice which was to be made.the sound from the great episode, song to live and die by,reminds me so much of Peyton. The sixth and last but not least highligh fom the CD. 5/5
chloe dancer/crowns of thorns : not my favorite at all but Jason Shwartzman made such a moving speech telling us why he chose the song that we have to at least like it. 3.5/5
If you love the show and the previous soundtrack just buy it,if not,buy it cause you'll find something you love on it.

5 out of 5 stars Another Great Soundtrack.......2007-04-05

One Tree Hill has really done it again. If you are a fan of the first two soundtracks, you will undoubtedly love this one. The show does a tremendous job of using music to help tell a story, and this soundtrack features the perfect sampling of songs from several of the pivotal scenes this season. I love that OTH offers a showcase for a lot of up-and-coming artists, so for those looking for something a little different than what's out on mainstream radio, I highly recommend this CD.

5 out of 5 stars So good it makes me smile........2005-10-05

When i listen to this cd i honestly get warm on the inside. This is the best Lucero cd out of all of them. I spent all of last summer listening to this album and it just feels great to listen to it and think about those times. Anyone who just wants to sit down and drink a luke warm keystone light should grab this album. Youll love it. Its perfect music to listen to while drinking, its soo chill out music.

5 out of 5 stars Brings Back Memories.......2005-07-28

It is great to see Lucero on Amazon! I was listening to these guys a few years ago in hole in the wall coffee shops late at night in Tennessee. This album has a song on it for everyone. My favorite would have to be "Nights Like These".

5 out of 5 stars Tennessee.......2005-03-13

I think ths album is Luceros finest work. Its a little country, and a little rock and his voice is great. This was the first Lucero album that I listened to. Lucero has been defined as "Heartbreak at its mother f***ing finest" quite frankly I couldn't agree more.

I was impressed with "Sweet Little Thing"
blown away by "Fist Full of Tears"
and "nights like these" and "aint that lonely" are two of my favorite songs on the album.
...oh yeah, "chain link fince" rocks

just buy the record already.

5 out of 5 stars Great Band Releases Great Record! Read All About It.......2004-05-19

I bought this cd just by reading some reviews and hearing a couple of samples on Amazon. In this case, I have found a band that I listen to more than any other at this moment. It is a great rock and roll record. They combine rock and roll with country and do it all with heart and soul. I listened to this album before I heard thier debut, which also is a great record, but I tend to favor Tennessee a bit more. But, for a real treat, if these guys come to your town, do yourself a favor and go see them!

Torn and frayed, the voice of Lucero singer Ben Nichols epitomizes a band that spends half it's time on the highway driving to the next gig. But judging by the fun the Memphis four-piece appears to be having on its fifth album, that road may go on forever. Produced by David Lowry (Camper Van Beethoven, Cracker), the record draws a parallel with its 2005 release Nobody's Darlings, meshing elements of English blues, Southern swamp rock and Bowery Street punk rock-all led by the crashing, thrashing twin guitars of Nichols and the venerable Brian Venable. While songwriter Nichols' can transform Mick Jagger-like between gentle ballads ("She Wakes When She Dreams"), moody love overtures ("The Weight of the Guilt") and straightforward pop songs ("She's Just That Kinda Girl"), his mettle (and the band's) is uncovered in rockers like "I Don't Want To Be the One" and "Sing Me No Hymns." --Scott Holter

5 out of 5 stars They keep getting better..........2006-12-25

This band just keeps putting out better & better material. My favorite album is Tennessee, but this is as good... if not better. In a time of fall out boy (crap in my opinion) being played on radio, its a shame you dont hear these guys. Do yourself a favor (and the band too!) when they come to your city, go and support them.

5 out of 5 stars Lucero rocks my ears.......2006-10-22

Where Springsteen, The Replacements, Skynyrd and The Ramones smash into each other on a whiskey and sweat soaked bar stage, you'll find Lucero's new tunes. Pure visceral power, the fieriest emotions, the drunkest, loneliest nights. If any of that appeals to you, this CD is for you. I think it's their best record, rivaled only by That Much Further West. "What Else Would You Have Me Be" is one of my favorite songs in years. Lucero makes me feel like that 13 year old kid discovering Guns n' Roses and learning to love music for the first time. They are essential. This record rocks my eardrums. Humans who wish to treat their listening organs nicely will purchase this disc and support the hardest working band in America.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent choice.......2006-09-30

This is an awesome album. The vocals have an almost Springsteen sound. The lyrics are so powerful and heartfelt. "What else would you have me be?" is one of the best songs on the album, and "San Francisco" is my personal favorite. I recommend this album to anyone who can appreciate good, fresh music.

4 out of 5 stars Sing me no hymns..........2006-09-29

...pour me a tall glass of whiskey and let's have some fun rock n rollers. Lucero plays it on this album. It's a tasteful product all the way around from the album title, cover, art, pictures, song titles, song choruses, lyrics, guitar licks, lead licks right where you need 'em, f***in' lyrics again, f***in' cymbals with base and guts with f***in'...f***in'...vocals and drums! And 1, 2,3,4's! Let's pull out the fine china and f***in dance on it.

If you could melt vinyl copies of the Stones' Exile on Main Street and Lynyrd Skynyrd's Second Helping and reform the wax to create one record, it might sound something like this one by Lucero, the Memphis foursome which enlisted the renowned Jim Dickinson (Big Star, The Replacements) to produce its fourth release. Led by a dual-guitar framework and the double-bourbon-on-the-rocks vocals of Ben Nichols, who manages to balance the lucidity of Jay Farrar with the garbled tongue of Shane McGowan, the band effortlessly melds its Southern rock trappings with pure punk riffs. While ballads such as "Hold Me Close" and "Nobody's Darling" are invigorating, the band's calling card lies in muscle-bound rockers like "Noon As Dark As Night" and "Watch It Burn." Nichols can belt out believably about a first time in love ("Sixteen") or being drafted to war ("The War") with equal aplomb to tipping back a few too many ("Last Night In Town") or bailing out of Dixie for the West Coast ("California"). --Scott Holter

5 out of 5 stars Straight up Southern Rock........2006-05-08

Lucero never lets a man down. Whether I am driving to nowhere or drinking myself retarded, these guys provide my soundtrack. I've made an ass of myself so many times to so many girls after getting drunk and listening to this CD. If you get a chance to see these guys live, do what you can to take it. Not to be missed. They played a 2 1/2 hour set last time I saw them. There isn't a harder working band out there right now.

5 out of 5 stars Best Band that is still togeter.......2006-05-06

This band rules............Awesome, but they never come to South Carolina........but still think they are hands down the best band (that is still going at it strong) alive!!!!

5 out of 5 stars lucero is the 2nd best band in the USA.......2005-11-10

Ben has an amazing talent for lyrical explination.. These guys are creating new sound while managing to hold onto their roots in the SOUTH....Just behind Old 97s, Lucero is bound for glory!

1 out of 5 stars Big Mistake.......2005-09-19

I'll describe for you the story.....I was walking into this best buy the other day and I heard this song "sixteen". It wasn't bad. Hell it was the best song I'd ever heard playing in a best buy. Bought the CD on a whim. Over time, they say most artists pro-gress. In this case, unfortunately, it means their albums start sucking.

Except for the one song, every other one is disjointed and accompanied by the worst eddie vedder interpretation I have ever heard in my life. I don't know what these guys are pursuing with this country-alt stuff. But change direction. They sound like they could have a lot of potential, just dump the lead singer and get someone with an actual voice. This guy sounds like he poured hot lead on his vocal chords before recording.

4 out of 5 stars what rock 'n' roll is suppose to do.......2005-08-12

Maybe it's because all their songs remind me of when I got in a fight, got drunk, fell down, fell in love, fell outta love, wore a leather jacket, looked at books on motorcycles, enlisted, traveled the south, moved to California, got a tattoo, bought a guitar, smoked cigarettes, had whiskey for breakfast, ate desert lizard and watched the road to nowhere unfold in front of me. Or maybe it's because these guys sound like ZZ Top's first album on every one of their albums. Whatever it may be, it's what good
rock n roll is suppose to do: Rock, and remind me of all the good things I've done.

2 out of 5 stars An overrated band.......2005-12-15

I really want to like this music, but it's so formulaic and soulless. The vocals are stiffened by some forced folksiness, and the lyrics are repetitive and empty. They sound like hipster guys playing old-country dressup, like protected, untorn hearts going for broken and battle-scarred (I don't know for a fact that these guys haven't been through the things that so often make great country music, I'm just saying that this is what their music sounds like).

I am a big Lucero fan and have a number of her CD's, but this is by far the best. Even non-fans will love the music, especially the mariachi music and the medley 'El noa-noa.'

5 out of 5 stars SIMPLY GREAT.......2001-10-24

Lucero has a simply beautiful voice. She's great, special with mariachi band. For all Lucero's fans this album has to be in your collection.

4 out of 5 stars Lucero en Mexico.......2001-07-28

I have been a fan of Lucero for quite a while. I also am not a big fan of live recordings. This CD to me is very good.

Lucero to me, while a very good singer, has not shown that strong deep voice needed for mariachi songs. On this album, she shows she's got and does a very good job at it.

Any person who loves the beautiful music of mariachi, Lucero and live music will love this CD. She really does a great job and this CD is very good. I would highly recommend this CD.

4 out of 5 stars i like this one a lot.......2006-03-02

my older brother listens to this because he got dumped by his girlfriend. it sounds ok, i think. he got over her he says because of this band and then he got a tattoo on his arm that says lucero so i think this is a good band. i just hope that they don't break up because then my brothers tattoo will be stupid. so are girls he says.

5 out of 5 stars freakin bonres all over the damn place.......2005-07-05

This cd is amazing and it comes with a boner disk and its just a different version of the other cd. Lucero should be huge. They remind me of Nirvana but waaaay better. BONERS.

5 out of 5 stars just when you think there's nothing new out there..........2005-05-15

...comes this record. a slight departure from their previous releases, this one still has the trademark lucero stamp through and through. although this album draws a line between lucero's past and future, stylistically, i doubt many of their old fans will be disappointed. the 3 records prior to this one were more "country" (for lack of a better term), and this one, as Rolling Stone pointed out, is more "Replacements". which is to say that the guitars are a little fuzzier, and just a little more "rock". yet this record doesn't sound quite like anything else out there. references to Uncle Tupelo have been made, but i feel those references apply more to the previous lucero recordings than this one.
lucero clearly has held onto their roots here, with the country twang seeping through, and the lyrics certainly fit the bill, being concerned mainly with heartbreak, drinking and fighting. the leanings toward rock have created a new chapter for this band. i think soon people will talk about "old lucero" and "new lucero", as the forthcoming record, "nobody's darlings" is an even further step away from the "country" tag. it could be said that this is the record that would the best "icebreaker" to introduce them to someone unfamiliar, leading that person to have to seek out the earlier work.
but you can't fault the band for experimentation, especially when it works so well for them. the increase in energy (such as in "hate and jealousy", tonight ain't gonna be good" and "tears don't matter much" seems to come so naturally to them, and resonates with the listener so well, that at the end of the record, any arguments of "selling out" that might've been there have simply been blown away. this record, like all of lucero's recordings, has an honesty that you just can't help but feel, and therefore can't argue with.

5 out of 5 stars Older music, Newer fan.......2004-09-09

It just goes to show that there is always room to expand your mind and tastes. I recently had a dear friend turn me on to Lucero, and I cannot believe that I hadn't heard of them earlier. Their entire sound, the lyrics, the composition...it reaches me. I've attached events in my life to a lot of their songs already...lol. Basically, "Tennessee" and "That much Further West" have become the soundtrack for my life for the summer of 2004. Going to see them on September 21 at Oberlin college, and looking forward to the show. Looking forward to more music from them in the future.

4 out of 5 stars Great CD, lousy production values.......2004-03-11

Great CD in the Ryan Adams, Replacements, Westerberg, Son Volt, Whiskeytown all American rock tradition. Only complaint is the production is muddled, but the material does make up for it

5 out of 5 stars man i wish texas was that cool..........2006-07-13

this album is amazing, lucero is amazing, everything lucero has put out is amazing...but unfortunetly they are not from Texas as the other guy said.

4 out of 5 stars Must be the dirty water.......2005-10-17

First of all, Lucero is from Memphis, not Texas as the above review stated. Lucero is an amazing band with a sound comparable to mid-era Replacements mixed with Faithless Street/ Strangers Almanac era Whiskeytown. But there is a certain Blues quality to this Memphis 4-piece that those other bands couldn't quite nail when they tried. Ben Nichols vocals just have a natural heart felt blues edge to it that even tops Westerberg and Adams on poignancy at times if you can believe it. They are a rare blast of heart felt honesty floating around your local bar doing shots on a wednesday night going unnoticed. They are always on tour- I've seen them all over the country the past couple of years. They are amazing live. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT BUT NEGLECTED SPANISH OPERA.......2002-08-15

One of the most attractive aspects of Spanish national culture is its mass of internal contradictions. Spaniards want to hang on to their traditions and be modern at the same time. They are simultaneously regionalists, nationalists and internationalists. They are desperate to be taken seriously in the wider world, but determined that the world should take them on their own terms.

This two-sided approach to life permeates Spanish art. Simultaneously joyful and tragic, bloodthirsty and comic, conservative and experimental, it constantly refuses to be categorised.

As probably the greatest of Spain's classical composers (although some would place Albeniz or the tragic figure of Granados above him), Manuel de Falla encapsulates all I have been talking about. The possessor of a giant intellect, reserved, severe, almost priestly in his demeanour, he wrote some of the most flamboyant and celebratory music ever committed to a formal orchestral score. And while he was a proud musical nationalist who may have done more than anyone to explore Hispanic folk influence within a classical compositional framework, he is unquestionably in the late-romantic mainstream and the common ground he shares with composers from Wagner to Bartok is striking.

La Vida Breve is a short (about an hour) opera that employs numerous sounds and themes from the Spanish flamenco style of folk music. Flamenco itself is an enormous and diverse genre that in a typically Spanish way spans both flamboyant dancing and dark, Moorish-tinged soul singing. De Falla's opera represents an ambitious and technically brilliant development and elaboration of the traditional style of flamenco story-telling called "zarzuela". It tells the simple "two worlds" story of a wealthy man (Paco) who seduces a gypsy girl (Salud) and promises to marry her. He then goes back on his word and marries a member of his own caste. Salud gatecrashes the wedding telling of her heartbreak, and dies at Paco's feet. The End.

That's virtually all there is to it, and some critics have accused de Falla of a lack of drama particularly in the finale. This is to betray a lack of understanding of Spanish culture, in other words, to look at this archetypal Spanish work through jaded eyes accustomed to the Byzantine plot twists and melodramatic revenge denouements of Italian opera. As I've said in a different context elsewhere, it's like looking for Hamlet in a haiku. La Vida Breve is structurally as delicate as a butterfly, and it runs a great gamut of breathtaking soundscapes from sombre orchestral interludes to mighty choral anthems to dance tunes to folksong.

The definitive performance on record from a historic viewpoint was conducted by Rafael Fruhbeck de Burgos and featured the great Spanish soprano, Victoria de los Angeles, both of whom had an uncanny grasp of the local colour. However, the sixties mannerisms and sound (although well transferred) of the de Burgos/de los Angeles version will not please everybody, and in any event it does not seem to feature in Amazon's U.S. catalogue. And given that this great but neglected work is rarely performed outside Spain, every new studio recording is a labour of love. Whichever version you get, you are unlikely to be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Haunting and Plaintive........2002-01-18

I am ashamed to say that I have owned this opera for over four years, but just began to listen to it attentively this past June. If your are willing to be patient, this opera will flower for you. It begins with eighteen very slow minutes in which some haunting but fleeting melodies will bubble to the surface. The chorus and soloists relish in the lushly evocative Spanish phrases. Manuel Cid as "the voice" in the distance will captivate you with his lyricism. Things begin to get serious at the Intermezzo and continue at a higher and somewhat cheerier voltage until the final dance. Don't bother with the trivial plot, buy this CD for the passion that clearly went into creating the music.
