Ortega is a true "new flamenco" diva. She has a depth that can only come from a deep understanding of the real roots of the music, the Gypsy soul of the art. But she is also a contemporary art singer: controlled, forward-looking, and thoroughly original in her delivery. She does not experiment for its own sake, she does not add a growl to make it rock or a quiver to make it jazz. Rather she finds her own way, her own unique course through this most difficult of vocal styles, and comes to us as a fully realized folk singer and an equally challenging pop singer. She is accompanied primarily by guitarist Chicuelo, and the production ranges from rough and soulful to smooth and romantic. They are presented as songs, not dances, for the most part, as art music rather than street music, and they take advantage of the space and pacing of theater. This is not a look back, but a defiant stand in the present, a hopeful look to the future of flamenco, without funk, flash, or pretense. --Louis Gibson
