"Unplugged" takes on new meaning for this Greenpeace fundraiser. The hook is that the 16 name-acts here--Midnight Oil, Sonic Youth, UB40 and P.M. Dawn included--were recorded live with a solar-powered mobile facility. Standout cuts from R.E.M. (a rock-steady, "Drive"), U2 ("Until the End of the World," live in San Diego), Annie Lennox (a lovely acoustic version of "Cold"), and Soundgarden with Brian May ("New Damage") make this a clear-cut winner. --Jeff Bateman

All of the cuts on this album were recorded with solar energy, so it gets five stars for being environmentally progressive. If only the music were at the same level. Don't get me wrong, there is some very good stuff here. REM delivers a rocking version of "Drive" that is very different from the album version, Annie Lennox gives a beautiful rendition of "Cold," U2 is reliably excellent performing "Until the End of the World," and James (whom I had never heard of before) has a great song, "Ring the Bells." The rest of the disk is okay-none of the cuts are terrible, but there's nothing particularly exciting either. There are too many bands that I've never heard of whose performances don't make me eager to hear more.

James' "Ring the Bells" really is breathtaking. I'm a big fan of James, and "Ring the Bell" is my favourite song of thiers, and I cried the first time I heard this version. R.E.M.'s "Drive" is really great, too. U2 "Untill the end of the World", and Sonic Youth's "JC" are both okay, and the rest of the songs didn't really hit with me, but the CD is well worth $15 of whatever just for "Ring the Bells"

The version of Ring the Bells by James is the most ass kicking song I have ever heard. The other songs are ok.

Fabulous Compilation for a Fabulous Cause!.......2006-05-03

I picked this up while I was in college from a second-hand store. These two tapes turned out to be the best. road. tapes. ever. Very useful considering I had a 5.5 hour drive to visit my family and the big city. Brilliant.

Save the planet, buy a cd........2003-04-22

I assume the proceeds from this went to a worthy cause. But more importantly, this is a great sampler of the late 80's alt/pop music scene. It's a 2 cd set, although I believe you can get them seperately. DISC ONE has 17 tracks of great bands like U2, Pretenders, Sting, INXS, Bryan Ferry, the Grateful Dead, REM, Lou Reed, and many more. DISC TWO is 14 tracks with Peter Gabriel, the Waterboys, John Mellencamp, Sade, and others. Disc one is the better of the two. It would be nice if Greenpeace released a new compilation like this. Too bad there's just not the same quality of groups around today. And too bad this is out of print. Peace.

Greenpeace actually had a 2-disc set I like more entitled "Rainbow Warriors" full of more 80's bands, but this 90's collection is sweet too. As with most compilations, purchase is usually based on the bands included, and the majority here are good. Obviously U2, REM, and Midnight Oil are always a plus. Otherwise I especially like the tracks from James, L7, Jesus And Mary Chain, and Sonic Youth. Soundgarden is a favorite of mine, but "New Damage" is one of their weaker songs. In short, you'll most likely be getting this used, and for that price it's a good listen.
