Album Description

This compilation consists of 10 selections of old style traditional Cuban music. It includes 3 compositions by composer Silvio Cebrian, new arrangements of Lagrimas Negras, by Miguel Matamoros, Que Mala Suerte, by Arsenio Rodriguez, and Mujeres de Mayari composed by Francisco Repilado known as Compay Segundo to the music world. There are 4 original compositions, Son Bailadores, arranged by Papo Ortega, composed by Mario J. Ortiz; Guajiro Soy, and the title track Recordando a Cuba, that tribute the 6 original Cuban provinces, were co-written by Papo Ortega and Sergio Sori. Finally, but first on the album is Son Cubanoson is a son montuno written the founder of Cubanoson to introduce this dance orchestra to the world.

Last Saturday it was my pleasure to hear Papo Ortega's CubanoSon perform live at the Westgate Lounge, a popular Latin music and dance club in Westchester, New York, that features the best Latin bands including the best of the new. CubanoSon performed songs from their new CD Recordando a Cuba. This new recording brings a fresh interpretation to a highly danceable style of music known as the "Son". The Son originated in Cuba in the early part of the 1900's and was popularized by orchestras like Arsenio Rodríguez y Su Conjunto, La Orquesta Aragon, Sonora Matancera and José Fajardo y Su Orquesta. This musical style spread like wild fire throughout the world and gave birth to El Son Montuno, and along with El Punto Cubano, is the origins of what we now know as Salsa and Charanga. ELENA CASANOVA brings fire, passion and beauty to this great music of Cuba's finest composers, evoking the very soul of Cuban classics. Cuban-born Casanova began piano study at the age of five, and within three years was selected to enter the Music Conservatory in Havana, Cuba. By the age of 13 she had already performed major works by composers such as J.S. Bach, Beethoven and Schubert. Upon her family's move to the United States, she enrolled in the San Francisco Conservatory, and later received her performance degree from the University of Redlands. Ms. Casanova maintains an active concert career, and is a regular participant in master classes and musical competitions.

Fantastic, romantic and rambunctious............2006-03-27

This is as Cuban as you can get. The classic Danzon played by a great band, with a slightly more popular sound than that of Barbarito Diez and Antonio Maria Romeu.

If you are Cuban, or want to be one, you cant miss this CD.... This is not watered down Cuban music from NY, or salsa from the Bronx, this is the real thing!

A Fake.......2003-12-28

Matthew Johnston is correct. On the misnamed, El Original Matamoros, the 'original' 1930s recordings have been dubbed over with new guitar and bongos. There is no need for this - the original recordings are excellent as is.

Dubbing guitar over Matamoros is roughly equivalent to do doing the same to Robert Johnson or John Lee Hooker - in other words: ridiculous!

The musicians doing the dubbing are actually quite talented, but as there is no way they could remove the original guitar and bongos, the new parts clash with the older. There are also extreme sonic differences between the new and older recordings.

The best Matamoros tracks are from their earlier trio years. Their later conjunto material is not as noteworthy. The Spanish label, Tumbao, has put out some excellent Matamoros collections. Two particularly good compilations are titled: "La China En La Rumba", and "The Legendary Trio Matamoros". Unfortunately, Tumbao CDs are not available on Amazon in the USA. Both titles are, however, available through Amazon UK (but listed as 'unknown label'). You may also be able to find Tumbao CDs through other US retailers.

Close, but no cigarro.......2002-12-05

To be sure, there are some great songs on here, but BEWARE: this music is NOT original. The backing music and the vocals come from different recording sessions. The vocals sound completely original (and the quality is quite good), but as you listen to the supporting music, you realize that it must have been recorded in the past 10 years or so... it just sounds too clear, too "new." There is electric bass, and the percussion sounds too trebly when compared with the warm, muted quality of the vocals.

It's not necessarily a bad thing: if you don't listen that closely, you probably won't be able to tell, and the overall quality is great. However, I couldn't get over feeling slightly cheated out of what I thought would be a completely authentic set of recordings. The complete absence of liner notes or production data also made me suspicious. There are lots of other Trio Matamoros discs that you might want to check out first. (and let me know which ones are good, because this is the only one I've got so far!)

This was the first (and only) album on which Celia Cruz and Justo Betancourt worked together--such a dynamic combination deserved at least another album as both were "Living Legends" of Cuban music. Ths 1976 release also features Papo Lucca, Johnny Pacheco and other Fania stalwarts. "Besito De Coco"{, "Vamos A Guarachar", "Reina Rumba" and "La Equivocada" are stone-cold classics from Salsa's golden era. Need more be said?

Cuban elegance.......2002-01-13

AFTER falling in love with the beautiful Cuban music produced by the likes of Reuben Gonzales I have been trying to learn Cuban and salsa style piano and the book I bought to assist me in this task had an interesting chapter on the music of Ninteenth Century Cuba.

This album is my first tentative step into the earlier music of Cuba and I've found it hard to stop playing it. Don't expect many traces of salsa or son styles in this album but I am hearing beautifully gentle, lilting rhythms which put me in mind of palm trees swaying in a gentle breeze.

Few tracks last more than three minutes, none reach to four so in many ways these pieces of solo piano music are more like tone poems, occasionally reminiscent of Eric Satie.

Some pieces remind me of Scott Joplin at his most lyrical - if you like his slow piece 'Solace - A Mexican Seranade' then there is plenty in this album to delight and soothe.

Pianist Luiz De Moura Castro handles the pieces with precision and feeling and he's not averse to pulling out the stops when the tone of the piece - especially those by Ernesto Lecuona - call for gusto and plenty of passionate fortissimo!

Hearing this album makes me want to seek out the sheet music and try to get my fingers round some of this music for myself.
