Overshadowed by their Mexican rock brethren and hugely popular Los Caifanes in Mexico in the early '90s, Maldita Vecindad nonetheless carved out a niche as the best south-of-the-border rock-punk-ska outfit. This CD helped put them on the map in 1991 and opened doors for subsequent U.S. tours. From the frenzied ska fever on "Pachuco" to the casual salsa-samba hints in "Kumbala," Maldita play a wide range of worldbeat rhythms. Instantly catchy is the melodic "Tono," with hard, snapping beats and tense bass lines producing cool dance-rock rhythms. But the band also displayed its taste for humor on the offbeat "Pata de Perro" rocker and infused the horn-driven "Un Poco de Sangre" with just a smidgen of soul. --Ramiro Burr

Muy Bien.......2006-03-09
Es un disco que marco una época en el Rock latino. Lo mejor de la Maldita
Refreshing Mexican Rock.......2000-03-17
Bueno, unlike all the rest of you all I am not going to give 5 stars to a CD that is mearly very good, and this CD is. Maldita, has a quick funk/ska/punk/latin sound that complaments the real feeling of Ciudad de Mexico's modern rock scene....... that I was fortunate enough to get to know last year. This band is important to Mexican rock,as that it has not sold out as so many Mexican rock groups do. The best song on the album (in my opinion) is Pachuco (if you need to wake up a party put this song on). The whole CD is tight, and in my top 10 in Spanish.
I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!.......1999-05-17
I love there work not only because Lalo the saxaphone player is related to me, but because they are real talented.Im from Laredo and when they had a concert there it was bad a**.
It's the best Maldita Vecindad CD out of the 4........1998-12-01
Maldita Vecindad's "EL CIRCO" is a mixture of many styles of music. It's pretty cool. I say it's the best of all four CDs, including the last one. A faster version of "EL CIRCO" is "EN VIVO:GIRA PATA DE PERRO" Which is cool too, because it's the live version of the songs. In other words the songs of this CD are MALDITA VECINDAD's BEST.

Maldita Musica.......2003-12-11
Feel alive once again after listening to this CD. A true reflection of MVs vision. An incredible listen while stuck in rush hour on the 101n. bound outa Hollywood. Gran circo es esta ciudad! Aha!
Ethnomusicology 101.......2001-07-20
Madness? The Specials? definetily way more grabbing than No Doubt. It is not far fetched to include La Maldita in this category. El Circo was perhaps their greatest achievemement (Tono, Solin, Kumbala, Pata de Perro). Yet, this incredible sense of touch with the realities of urban life still flows through their music. Yes, it has social content but it never ceases to be fun! This compilation is proof of that.
Although in the last few years they have been running behind the success of other bands like Molotov and the always mesmerizing Cafe Tacuba, La Maldita will always have something new to offer. Someday commercial US radio will play these guys and many others from non-English speaking countries.
Ten Years and Counting.......2000-12-12
Maldita Vencindad are captured here at the apex of their careers as one Mexico's top rock acts. A sort of "greatest hits" package this CD illustrates the bands success drawing off of 5 different CD's. The sound of MV hasn't changed much throughout the years, just the themes have. The bands blend of hip-hop, ska and Mexican roots music infuse their sound with a freshness that has set a standard for many bands to follow. The members are led by "Roco", whose image is neo-Pachuco personified, imagine Edward James Olmos posing for the play "Zoot Suit" circa 1978, fast forward to 2000, he's the leader of this band of "Chilangos" who play their brand of Roc en Espanol that is "puro mexicano". This CD captures one of MV's strong points, their live act. Having seen them several times I can say they put on a tremendous show. Roco is possessed on stage, a shaman working his magic, he works the crowd into a frenzy. Some of that energy is evident on the "live" recordings but like most "live" recordings fails to capture the true magic. All the classic MV "hits" are here and even a few surprises that have not been released elsewhere. MV's appeal is on both sides of the border as the Raza on both sides of the border feel at one with the band. They look like us and emote our emotions, be it a Mexicano from the DF or a Xicano from the southwest. MV has always been political, always poignant in their commentary, never afraid to confront injustices or bring up disgraceful incidents such as the slaughter of students in '68 in Mexico City. Their music can be playful as well, sometimes we laugh to conceal the tears. Maldita deals the musical cards as though they were "loteria cards", watch out for the diablito and the joker, escuche la campana, Roco is El Catrin and El Brujo rolled into one. "Pachuco" is one of the best party songs, questioning the hypocrisy one generation puts upon another, the song is just a great statement about unrealistic expectations. This CD has too numerous superb songs to mention, 23 songs in all, suffice to say that this is a portrait in time of one of the best bands in Roc en Espanol. A decade 's worth of music that shows all the changes the band has been through. The music hasn't changed much it is just the issues. They have a unique ability to make their sound totally reflective of the culture on both sides of the border. It's like masked wrestlers and tacos de la calle with a side order of frijoles y arroz, Pancho Villa and Pete Wilson, the sights and sounds of the urban jungle, a street hustler spewing flames from the gasoline in his mouth, a cholo driving with his homies in a lowrider '57 chevy, legless beggars sitting on skates nailed to a board, a dude doing tricks on a skateboard, pandilleros and Aztec Gods, Chapultapec and East Los Angeles, una mezcla of a culture without borders, it's all here, it's Maldita Vencindad y Los Hijos del Quinto Patio, original home boys from the DF. The first ten years are captured here, I'm looking forward to the next ten.

Ixchells Response.......2003-02-06
Maldita Vecindad is one of the few to have these kinds of music together Ska, punk, old rancheras, pachuco dayz tunes. It sounds all so good the street talk in Mexico and desmadre there is reminds me and takes me back to those days. It can take you from the mosh pit to your childish years.

Absolutamente recomendable.
Amazing mix of styles........2000-08-24
I was already familiar with the invigorating ska from the _El Circo_ album, but hearing Maldita's _Mostros_ astounded me with its mix of styles. We've got ska, rap, skatepunk, folklorico, and all sorts of other sounds on this album, with subject matter ranging from cool old cars to the Zapatista revolution. To top it off, the album has great artwork. Highly recommended.
It's great!.......1999-02-27
Many people have forgotten about this wonderful band, and I hope they won't completly disapear, they are very original and one of the oldest band in Mexico, in my opinion, this band was one of the first band who started a rock revolution.

Everything started in 1989.......2004-11-21
Their 1989 groundbreaking debut album was the first successful step to their legendary "El circo" album of 1991. There are great records on this album already like 'Rafael', 'Morenaza', 'Bailando', and their ever epic and mythical 'Mojado'. 8 tracks that cover a lot of influences: reggae, ska, punk, and afro-cuban flashes blend together to form a unique style that still resonates 15 years later. This album is one of those records that brings back memories to those who lived in those days where a new thing called Rock en Español was barely stretching its legs.
no aguanto mas, quiero bailar.......2001-09-10
rafael, morenaza, and bailando are my favorites.
a fine debut from Mexico City.......2000-02-01
Those that enjoy ska and are interested in tapping into the Latin music market should definitely check out Maldita Vecindad. Those already in tune with rock en Espanol may already know of the group's popularity. This debut excited many in Mexico and rippled over into other countries. The band even caught the attention of Jane's Addiction from Los Angeles, who invited Maldita to open up for them in December 1990. I recommend this album or the following "El Circo" as a beginning to familiarize yourself with the awesome power of Maldita Vecindad. If the home recording doesn't grab you, their extremely energetic live show will.

Headspinner!.......2002-04-09
Maldita Vecindad along with cafe tacuba represents the best of Mexico's rock en español movement. Maldita has a cool style which is a mixture of punk rock with some banda and circus sounds. This record does not contain any of their most popular tunes, but still it is one of my faves, check out "Por ahi" , "el chulo" and "don palabras". Also check out other maldita recordings.
3rd studio album and still strong.......2000-08-04
The twist of latin percussive rhythms incorporatred with ska horns a la Maldita Vecindad still shine on this, their third studio album. If you find the average guitar-ska sound to be a bit weak, then this album may suit your palette, as the guitar sound is beefier on this album than any of Maldita Vecindad's other efforts. However, that does not make this a rock album that will turn away the listeners of the band from days past. There are some beautiful Mexican flavors and skanking moments throughout as well as the almost mandatory ballad. The only irony I find is that the sound on this album seems more like a circus than their previous album, "El Circo". (I think the gruelling touring schedule of the band's past, along with the circus that life is, influenced the previous album title). The overwhelming success of "Pacucho" from "El Circo" may shadow everything else Maldita Vecindad does, but the listener who seeks fine music instead of mere hits will find this album holding a special place in their stereo and heart. This being my second review of Maldita Vecindad, and again only four out of a possible five stars, I wish to comment as to why I chose simply four stars. The band is five stars. Their live shows are five stars. This causes me to think very highly of what they are capable of. I am still waiting for that ultimate album which will cause me to shout and rejoice in the eternal five star quality.
