Customer Reviews:
Not Enough Stars.......2005-08-07
I bought this CD when it was issued. At the time I lived in Madrid. Upon returning to New York I dicovered that the CD had been left behind. I never grew tired of the music and would play it often. Semilla del Son is a clasic and testament to what the entire genre of Son is! The simplicity of "Quirino con su tres" sung by Mercedita Valdes, and the raw arrangement of "Mami me gusto" by Arsenio Rodriguez are strikingly sophisticated. All these years later I am still haunted by this loss. The sample cuts bring me to tears not so much by the memories the music envokes but by the life and vigor that these recordings appear to eternally represent.
SEMILLA DEL SON- Various Artists.......2000-08-09
This is definitely one of the best compilations of afro-cuban music put together by BMG-RCA-Ariola, Spain and Cuba's Egrem labels. You will enjoy listening to Carlos Embale with Septeto Nacional in the classic son "Echale Salsita" in a version recorded in Cuba during the mid to late 70's. Also breathtaking old time recordings like "Bruca Manigua" with Miguelito Valdes and a cuban conjunto ensembles, probably either recorded in New York City or Cuba, during one of his multiple cuban tours of the 1950's. Paulina Alvarez in "El Panquelero", a typical and beautiful version of "Guantanamera" sung by the great Abelardo Barroso", "El Niño Rivera's Orchestra in "El Jamaiquino", Beny More in "Rumberos de Ayer", Celina & Reutilio in "A La Caridad del Cobre", Los Compadres in "Rita La Caimana", Faustino Oramas aka "el Guayabero" in "Marieta", Arsenio Rodriguez in "Mami Me Gusto", Chappottin and Miguelito Cuni in "Sazonando", etc.etc. makes this 1992 issued CD irresistible. Don't miss it.
THE Introduction to Cuban Music.......1999-07-18
Cuban music seems to be experiencing a major comeback nowadays, specially through the efforts of the World Circuit/Nonesuch label, but what really drew my attention to old-timer cuban music some years ago was this outstanding compilation. Here you get a bit of everything, from such legends as Arsenio Rodriguez, Francisco Repillado (aka Compay Segundo) and Benny More. Every song here is a gem. After hearing this CD, you'll be glad to learn that the tradition is still alive and well in Cuba, thanks to the extraordinary longevity of their musicians. Do yourself a favour, BUY THIS CD WITHOUT HESITATION!!
