It's hard to follow up the record that made you famous. For many artists, that's their first album, and the disappointing results are termed the "sophomore slump." Luckily, Tegan and Sara's star-making Juno-nominated album, So Jealous, was their fourth--and their fifth album, The Con, not only avoids any kind of slump but sets a new bar of quality quite high. While both a darker and quirkier album than the near-perfect heartbreak pop of So Jealous, The Con skillfully packs its instant hooks in so tight, virtually every line becomes the one you want to sing along to--and the twins' lyrics aren't your typical pop pabulum. Layer upon layer of tasty ear candy coat considered sentiments like "Nobody likes to but I really like to cry," "I felt you in my legs before I ever met you," and "Maybe I would have been something you'd be good at"--lyrics that feel honest and add an emotional urgency and depth rarely heard on the radio. However, the biggest leap Tegan and Sara made on this record was not the lyrical content, but how the album itself was created. The switch to coproducing with indie superstar Christopher Walla (Decemberists, Death Cab for Cutie) is apparent, and part of what gives this record its distinctive and innovative touch. From the odd structure of "I Was Married" to the thumping electronica of "Are You Ten Years Ago," The Con reverberates with unabashed creativity, and it's a rare pleasure to hear it done so well. I would be surprised if another band this year made a better record--it's really that good. A special bonus for fans: don't shy away from this deluxe edition--it includes a DVD with a feature-length intimate documentary on the making of the album, offering a lot of insight into their creative process. --Alan WileyCustomer Reviews:
Totally impressive - a sea change - surpasses even their sparkling previous albums.......2007-07-28
Such a great album!.......2007-07-24
It is a GREAT album and definitely a must have for any indie music fan.
Tegan and Sara have grown into some really outstanding musicians/lyricist. It's inspiring to see how much they've grow since "This Business of Art" and ""If It Was You."
Songs like: Back in your head, Hop a plane, and Nineteen WILL get stuck in your head!
Songs like: The con, I was married, soil, soil, like O like H show exactly how much this band has grown musically and lyrically.
Listen to this whole album 2 times and I GUARANTEE you'll be hooked!
This album was like a breath of fresh air that I so desperately needed.
The Con is definitely worth owning.
4.5; a stellar release from a reliable duo.......2007-07-24
I Was Married (Sara): A more subdued and quieter opener than previous ones had, it's more of like a nice ditty or an introduction to the record than an actual song. 7.5/10
Relief Next to Me (Sara): Sonically it's interesting with so many things going on at once but as a song, it's alright. It's certainly a listenable song but as far as a hooky song that you can sing along to, it's not really developed that way. 7.5/10
The Con (Tegan): Probably one of their best songs period. From the dynamic changes to the vocals in the guitars, it's a great rock song that manages to be punchy and loud without being overbearing and has a great driving quality to it, excellent song. 9.5/10
Knife Going In (Sara): After a track like the Con, of course the next song might not seem as great. It's just that musically it's fine, I'm not a big fan of the vocal melody and it even sounds grating with the "I'm feeling anxIOUS!" line. 7/10
Are You Ten Years Ago (Tegan): Here's a nice surprise. Mainly bass and drums driven, it's more like a techno song than anything and while it won't light up the dance floors, it's one of the more enjoyable tracks simply because it's so quirky and different than they've done. 8/10
Back in Your Head (Sara): Not as repetitive a first single as Walking With a Ghost was, it's just a nice catchy rock song in its simplicity and despite its ironic title (since it will most likely not leave your head), it's just a great track period. 9/10
Hop a Plane (Tegan): Teased on the DVD that it's the most expendable track, it's also one of the more "So Jealous"-like tracks on the record. It's catchy, it's short but there's not much to it either. 7.5/10
Soil, Soil (Tegan): A quiet acoustic track, it was actually a grower track since on first listen I didn't like its more intimate, unhooky qualities than found myself liking it for that reason. 8.5/10
Burn Your Life Down (Sara): It's a likable track and its got enough qualities to make it a favorite for people but I didn't get into it that much. That all changed when the bridge came in and the vocals get more louder and forceful and I ended up liking it more. Good thing. 8/10
Nineteen (Tegan): Similar to the Con or I Bet It Stung from the last record where its more punchy and has a darker quality about it. This is mainly due to Tegan's vocals which haven't really changed much but they're just as emotive. 9/10
Floorplan (Sara): Similar to Knife Going On, the main hook is kind of grating which kind of deflates the song a bit. In this case it's the "presSURE!" which kind of takes away from the hook of "all eyes are on me now". Musically it's similar to that song as well. 7.5/10
Like O, Like H (Sara): When I first heard the track, I didn't like it but since most of them grew on me I thought I'd listen more. It still hasn't grown on me. Some songs suffer from lack of hooks and nothing to latch onto. Problem with this song is the main hook is just not that memorable. 6.5/10
Dark Come Soon (Tegan): Another great track where it starts out quietly and a great vocal melody than it gets more rock-y with a catchy but not overused synth riff and increasing pace. Would've made a great album closer but too bad it's buried way at the back of the record. 9/10
Call it Off (Tegan): Even though she didn't want it to sound like a singer/songwriter track, that's what this track sounds like. It doesn't really have the intimate qualities I Can't Take It had and it feels like less is more would've been the ideal approach since again there's tons of stuff going on. 7.5/10
What So Jealous has was very sparse in its instrumentation but there was hooks galore on that thing. Here the parts that people can latch onto are a little bit less obvious but the rewarding parts feel all the more satisfying when you "get" a song. From by-the-numbers albums from pop rock bands to half ***ed comebacks, it's nice to know there's at least a great rock record buried somewhere in your CD store.
Tee and Ess are the greatest........2007-07-24
Tegan and Sara mature, and blow me away in the process!.......2007-07-24
On "The Con," Tegan and Sara show that they've matured a lot since their last outing, not only musically, but lyrically as well. Whereas "So Jealous" was largely a fast-paced rock album, this one is much more balanced. There are clearly songs that sound like classic Tegan and Sara, but at the same time there are also some beautifully composed and executed songs. Almost every track on the album features multiple layers of guitars and synthesizers. "Relief Next To Me" showcases this addition quite nicely, as does "Knife Going In" and the absolutely awesome title track. "Are You Ten Years Ago" forgoes the typical drum set for an electronic drum track, and the end result is a more effective song than it would've been otherwise.
It's clear that the Quin sisters wanted to make an album that branches out from their previous sounds and explores new territory. For any artist, it is always a tricky path to walk. However, Tegan and Sara have achieved their goal flawlessly. They no longer sound like little girls but women. Every second of "The Con" showcases their maturity as musicians and as lyricists, and I couldn't be happier.
"So Jealous" was always sort of a guilty pleasure for me. As a grown male, you better believe I faced some opposition from friends when I tried to show them Tegan and Sara. No longer. "The Con" is an album that I'm not only proud to own, but I'm trilled to say that it's one of the best, most surprising records to release in 2007. If you've ever been a Tegan and Sara fan, you absolutely have to check this one out!

fun.......2007-08-06
an album about lies and confessions.......2007-08-04
The Con is an album about lies and confessions. The instrumental manages to be upbeat while at the same time being the perfect indie-pop accompaniment for the melancholy admitting of wrongdoings. And while Tegan and her sister sing about the demise of something that once was so good ("Nineteen"), they turn the self-sufficient suffering into a blissful break-up album that any ex-girlfriend can only find heartbreakingly honest.
It's quite obvious that the writing of The Con was a therapeutic experience for Tegan, and fans are only better off for it. It's the most captivating and best written album Tegan and Sara have released, and their maturity is emerging with lines like, "The pressure of this life is so/You can't be held accountable."
Absorb 2x, read the lyrics booklet and enjoy.......2007-07-28
It has the classic Tegan and Sara vocal sounds and contorted enjambment. But in many regards, it sounds altogether different, but for the best. Some tracks miss the mark (like Floorplan and I was Married--neither of which I could seem to get my head around and like), but there are some true gems.
My favorites include:
The Con--the title track itself and single released is upbeat and snappy
Are You Ten Years Ago--a spinny, electronic feel that requires concentration
Back in your Head--similar to the Con, but with more sophisticated yet simple lyrics
Soil, Soil--short and sweet
Burn your Life Down--the end of this song is utterly enrapturing
Nineteen--superb lyrics and an appealing rawness
Call it Off--depressing, certainly, but again, great lyrics and a smooth sound (not always characteristic of Tegan and Sara) are at work here
I'd give it a strong recommendation.
A Grand Departure.......2007-07-25
For one, the Quins' writing has improved, evident in such songs as "Nineteen" when Tegan admits to an unknown "you", "I felt you in my legs before I ever met you/And when I laid beside you for the first time I told you/'I feel you in my heart and I don't even know you.'" Or when Sara's breathy voice lends itself to the haunting "Floorplan" with "I want to draw you a floorplan of my head and heart/I want to give you directions, helpful hints/what you'll be looking for".
The girls' musicianship has also taken a great leap. The variety of sounds weaved around disarmingly subtle, yet powerful voices may leave some listeners feeling alienated after the first listen. The alternation of beats and peculiarity of song structure on this record will not be an instant hit with most people, but after a few listens, appreciation is sure to blossom.
Overall, the Con is a triumphant record of love, loss, and healing. It's lyrics are uncomfortably honest, not necessarily obvious and they're placed upon a perfect backdrop of both haunting melodies and chipper beats (complete with bright piano, electric and acoustic guitars, thumping basslines--contributed by both Hunter Burgan of AFI and Matt Sharp of the Rentals, and the occasional steel guitar). It's the musical equivalent of having your lover tell you everything you ever wanted (and never wanted) to hear. The good, the bad, and the ugly. It hurts. But love always does.
Hot but not.......2007-07-25
They don't really have the vocal talent for this kind of music either, a kind of Juliania Hatfield sound without her power, which isn't saying a lot. "Knife" isn't a very good song, no real hook, but a deep set of pipes might have saved it. I think they'd be better over a shoegazer type sound, where it wouldn't matter what they were singing.
Overall I'm not really sure they are going to make it with this garage/techno/indie groove, their voices are too breathy and the songs too scattered. But I'm not writing them off entirely, they're young, and there are enough parts that show promise ("felt you in my legs before I met you"; nice), and besides . . . they're hot.

There are worse things in life than making your acting debut on the much ballyhooed season finale of Ally McBeal, though teen operatic baritone Josh Groban doesn't seem destined to encounter them anytime soon. As the awkward high school student-client who asks the typically romance-jinxed Ally to his senior prom, Groban performed this debut album's "You're Still You" (adapted from film-composing legend Ennio Morricone's Academy Award-nominated score for Malèna, with lyrics by Linda Thompson) as a heart-tugging, literal showstopper. The young phenom was just 17 when veteran producer-writer David Foster tapped him to fill in for Andrea Bocelli at rehearsals for the 1999 Grammys, where Groban found himself suddenly dueting with Celine Dion.Indeed, such were his fortunes that the young Foster protégé was forced to drop out of Carnegie Mellon when professional commitments--including this record--interfered. And if this collection tends to hew sometimes uncomfortably close to Foster's own MOR sonic instincts, the material offers enough challenges to display Groban's talent and the potential of his warm, mature voice: a lyrical take on another Morricone classic, "Cinema Paradiso"; melancholy readings of Don McLean's "Starry, Starry Night" and Albert Hammond's "Alejate"; masterfully dramatic takes of the Neapolitan "Alla Luca Del Sole" and "Canto Alla Vita," the latter featuring the Corrs. Many of Groban's performances here, including a neo prog-rock-opera take on Bach's "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" (with Lili Haydn), seem both bigger and bolder than their precious musical frameworks, a telling hint that Grand Opera can't be far from his grasp. As said earlier, there are worse things in life. --Jerry McCulley

Great showcase of an outstanding voice........2001-09-18
are all very good. He is most loved for his more macho rancheras
found on many of his other collections, yet it is in this group of 15 ballads that I feel he most expertly uses the top end of his legendary voice to add just the right touch. These songs showcase the full spectrum of his amazing voice in a very smooth but powerfully impressive way. If I could find any fault in some of his rancheras (hard to do) it would be that the top end of his vocals are used a bit too much, and thus do not sound as dramatic as they can in his more balanced tunes. This is not a consideration in this group of tunes. The musicianship is excellent and Vicente's vocals are without comparison. His power and clarity seem to be effortless and he uses the full range to really paint a musical picture in each song.
Most awesome are the catchy tunes "Me Basta", "Preso" and "Todo Se Derrumbo Dentro De Mi" ...and the other twelve! There really are no duds on the disc. I know some Vicente purists will think I'm strange for preferring this disc to some of his other greats but believe me, this is one awesome display of his greatness and an enduring listen. Give it a shot, it's a nice change of pace for Chente fans.
Great!.......1999-07-26
