The 17th-century Italian art song repertory traditionally reserved for novice singers is given new life via Bartoli's artistry. With impeccable diction and evocative phrasing, she captures every innuendo of these simple, but passionate, pieces. No two repetitive phrases are alike; she chisels every line into a landscape of interpretive magnificence. Scarlatti's simple "O Cessate di Piagarmi" becomes a testament of innocent pain and plaintiveness. Giordano's "Caro Mio Ben" is transformed into a tender cry for love. All embellishments are imaginative and well executed. Accompaniment by György Fischer is equally appealing, sensitive and precise. Every singer questing for the art of singing should study these. --Barbara Eisner Bayer

4 out of 5 stars useful.......2007-04-11

I feel like recommending this compilation to neophites wanting to listen to some old arias to learn if they like this genre and to singing students:
Ms Bartoli's voice is not beautiful, nor perfect when heard live, but her technique sounds perfectly good on record. Here and there her voice gets harsh, flat, losing brilliance and warmth, but most of the time one can concentrate on the accurate rendering of these old and beautiful arias.

She wisely decided to follow the letter of Parisotti's score, therefore meeting the need of all singing students of having a reference for their study. The agility is outstanding but pronunciation and expression, as well as the perfect gusto in presenting the phrases, are what make this compilation worthwhile. Not a word goes wasted or neglected but her being Italian and her sensitivity manage to avoid overkill.

One could wish she would publish compilations of single authors of the xvi and xvii centuries, edited according to philological criteria or else other compilations of the dated but still useful Parisotti edition.

5 out of 5 stars Cecilia Bartoli at her best........2007-03-06

A great singer is one who dedicates singing to the text itself instead to himself/herself.
This is achieved 100% by Ms. Bartoli in this earlier album of hers. The recordings here cannot be termed otherwise than 'immaculate'. The very opening song 'Gia sole dal gange' is a display of Bartoli's unique timbre in its full beauty - glorious, rich and full. Many singers could tackle the range of this song, mezzos or sopranos, but who could pull it off in the manner as Ms. Bartoli? Credit to the one who picked this as the opening song of this fantastic album.
The songs following come in different styles and moods, all given full authentic interpretations by the singer. Compare the 'Vittoria, vittoria mio core' to 'Intorno al'idol mio' or 'Amarilli, mio bella' the vast contrast of mood, brought out equally well. The songs' requirement of versatility of interpretation is fully catered for.
I hate it when people say that this is a learners' album accompanying the 24 Italian Songs edited by one publisher. Such remarks could barely do justice to Ms. Bartoli's superb artistry, though admittedly, this CD would be an invaluable one for THAT purpose. What about the songs NOT included in the 24 Italian songs?

5 out of 5 stars Great companion to Schirmer's 24 Italian Arias book.......2007-02-21

Cecilia Bartoli beautifully demonstrates many of the songs in Schirmer's 24 Italian Songs & Arias Of The 17th & 18th Centuries, which is widely recognized as an intermediate collection of Italian repitoire.

5 out of 5 stars Great Bartoli, but not her best Italian songs.......2006-06-15

'The Impatient Lover' sung by Cecilia Bartoli is a collection of 18th and 19th century songs in Italian which were written by the predominantly German composers, Beethoven, Mozart, Schubert, and Hayden. Oddly, this is very seriously a better, or at least a more enjoyable collection, to my ear, than the 'If you Love Me' collection of Italian songs written by Italians, including Scarlatti, Caldera, and Vivaldi. And, neither collection of Italian songs is as interesting as Mme. Bartoli's collection of French love songs, 'Chant D'Amore'. All are done on London, but with three different accompaniests. I think the French material is just better than the Italian.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and useful CD.......2006-03-22

I used this CD as accompaniment and inspiration for a voice class. It's very useful and Cecilia Bartoli sounds amazing.

Antonio Salieri is, unfortunately, best known as Mozart's great Viennese rival. Some of his work has appeared on recordings, and he was clearly an interesting composer of well-crafted, entertaining music. But now that a singer with the stature and prodigious gifts of Cecilia Bartoli has undertaken an entire CD of his opera arias, he may just become a quasi-household name. Here he proves himself a composer who wrote for virtuosos; Bartoli is nothing if not a vituoso. And, indeed, this CD opens with an impressive bang: An aria from La secchia rapita features a wild vocal line complete with wild coloratura, huge leaps, a range from low G to high D flat (Bartoli flirts more and more with the soprano range while using her chest register even more forcefully!), and vast dynamic changes accompanied by a full orchestra augmented with grand, martial trumpets. Other arias--one from Palmira, Regina di Persia, for example--are more introspective and are spun out with a graceful, seamless legato and seemingly endless pianissimo. Everything one loves about Bartoli is here: the intensity, absolute fluidity in execution, breath control, glorious trill, the ability to whisper or holler, and an identification with the character she's portraying which makes the situation credible and involving for the listener. At the same time, we can't overlook a tendency to overstatement and exaggeration and a breathiness to some of the delivery which can be an annoying mannerism. But where else can one get such excitement and commitment coupled with an irresistible charm in a singer so clearly at her peak? Most/all of the arias and operas here are virtually unknown; this CD whets our appetites for more Salieri. The accompaniments are as superbly thought-out and played as one would hope for--the wacky pizzicato strings and solo wind and brass lines in an aria from La Cifra, for instance, will delight. Bartoli fans and fans of great singing should not wait another moment before ordering this. --Robert Levine

4 out of 5 stars Mostly nice selections sung well.......2007-03-07

This CD features many delightful selections of Salieri's music, expertly performed by Ms. Bartoli and by the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. Anyone who likes Bartoli, and most people (non-experts) who like Mozart, would enjoy this album. The slower pieces, such as "Ah sia gia" and "Lungi da te" are especially beautiful.

That said, some of the selections seem to drag on (Salieri's fault). After a while listening, one just gets the feeling that "Vi sono sposa e amante" should have ended already, and the same goes for "Sulle mie tempie."

1 out of 5 stars Painful introduction to Salieri.......2006-10-27

Ms. Bartoli is one of the great mezzos of our recent era, and her voice used to delight me, especially in the repertoire of Rossini, Mozart, & Handel sung by other great mezzos like Teresa Berganza.
Unfortunately, the voice that used to move so smoothly and accurately through florid passages is entirely absent here, and I have no explanation or understanding for the fervent praise bestowed upon this CD by others.
It is, in short, a travesty.
Bartoli emits the most painful and harsh pecking sounds......listening to just ONE of the tracks all the way through is a test of willpower and endurance! Granted, as someone else pointed out, these Salieri pieces are not an ideal choice for Bartoli, which explains some of the discomfort, but there is no way to excuse the vocalization that permeates the entire disc.
Sadly, this is a recording that should never have been released, and is a mockery of what the bel canto voice used to be.

5 out of 5 stars Bartoli- The Most Important Voice of Our Age.......2006-02-27

Cecilia Bartoli is not only noteworthy for her unique voice, but for her contributions to musical study. She seems to be effectively and singlehandedly changing the face of how we approach music history with her recordings. This is why this recording is important.

She has been recording rare arias from operas which have dropped out of common repetoire for centuries. She has unearthed forgotten operas of great musical innovators such as Glueck and Vivaldi, and now Salieri. And due to what she achieves here, I will happily put "Salieri Album" in a rank next to my most prized Mozart records.

It seems as though Mozart dominates today's ouvre as the sole Classical Period composer of opera, but it was composers like Vincente Martin y Soler and Antonio Salieri who dominated the scene. Salieri was also just as innovative as Mozart. Works such as the overture to "Cesare in Farmacusa" harbor proto-Beethovenian storms, while his opera "Axur," in it's ahead-of-its-time construction, look foreward to the music-dramas of Wagner. These days, we look mainly at Mozart and his Donna Anna or Queen of the Night as THE voices of the Classical Period, but when you consider the bigger picture, Salieri's heroines, especially those the Cecilia Bartoli electrifyingly portrays on this record, equate or exceed what we might hear from Mozart in technical demand and overall beauty (Take for example the first track on this record).

With Cecilia Bartoli, opera is never boring. Some might thing she overacts, but is opera not essentially a fusion of music and drama? In this respect, Signora Bartoli is the perfect voice to define our generation, a generation which is looking to expand its musical horizons by exploring operas of more obscure composers. It is a relief that she knows how to bring her roles to LIFE. This is why her mission to revive these works has been so succesful. She has people interested.

As for the composer himself, Salieri was without a doubt, the most influential on the upcoming Romantic Period, even more so than Mozart. Notable names who had their musical education nurtured under Salieri's wing include Schubert, Weber, Beethoven, Mozart's son Franz Xaver, and even Liszt. It really is unfortunate that Pushkin and Peter Shaffer have pinned against Mozart, a composer who Salieri admired and had good relations with, according to letters.

The recording quality is excellent, and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment compliments Bartoli's voice perfectly. Adam Fisher, furthermore, has a difficult task since much of this recording is world-premiere material. However, he presents the material as vividly as though they have never left the repetoire.

Buy this recording. I believe Signora Bartoli has set out on something great, and "Salieri Album" will have a ripple effect in the music world. I love this release.

5 out of 5 stars Genius! Sheer genius!.......2005-12-19

Cecilia Bartoli is known for recording unfamiliar music. Here she recorded arias by Mozart's great rival Salieri and how beautifully she does it. She finds the right colours for every single piece, combined with her brilliant technique you get a feast of tasteful singing that will take your breath away! Buy it!

5 out of 5 stars A revelation!.......2005-04-05

I came rather late to this CD. Am I the only one who saw "Amadeus" and came out wanting to hear more of the music of Salieri?

Ms Bartoli brings a her wonderful skills to the recording of some feriously difficult arias and proves up to the task. I know that some people have commented on flaws in her singing or the recording but the the joy of the album is the journey of discovery....each track is an adventure and a revelation.

A revelation of two great musical talents in top form ..Bartoli and Salieri.

Salieri's music is technically sophisticated and he wrote some truly glorious music for the female voice.

I can only recommend this to any lover of music.

    4 out of 5 stars Themeless Opera.......2006-10-19

As far as I know this work of 1843 is the last major opera buffa to be composed unless the definition of the genre is expanded to include works like Verdi's Falstaff. Although the recording booklet states that Don Pasquale is Donizetti's "undoubted comic masterpiece," I prefer L'Elisir D'Amore (1832), a less formulaic work labeled a "melodrama." There is nothing wrong with formulaic art as long as the formula means something. Paisiello's opera buffa Astrologi Immaginari (1779) satirizes dilettante pretensions to being a "philosopher" and thus disposes of a vestige of Renaissance culture that was fading away after 1740. Paisiello's opera makes good sense and is perfectly matched by the music. I find it more difficult to assign meaning to Don Pasquale; and the opera may well appeal to audiences interested in themeless "mere entertainment." The work synthesizes Rossini's approach to instrumental music with Bellini's style of flowing bel canto arias. The appeal of bel canto might be described as a physical sensation. All art depends on sensation. But opera consists of drama, and themeless drama makes no sense. The recording booklet reports that at Paris, "The critics found the subject somewhat threadbare." Themeless work could not compete, for example, with the striking historical settings of Meyerbeer's Les Huguenots and Le Prophete or even with Bellini's Norma and I Puritani. The contrast between these operas and Don Pasquale is analogous to the one between the rich historical settings of Sir Walter Scott's novels and the uncolored, if intelligently worked out settings of Jane Austen. In appreciating Don Pasquale, one must develop a taste for Plain Jane and set aside "Robert the Devil." As Dr. Malatesta sings in Act I, Scene 5, "You have to play the simpleton." Ironically Donizetti based his most popular opera Lucia di Lammermoor on a Scott novel.

5 out of 5 stars Forget the others - buy this one!.......2003-10-02

I originally purchased the RCA Red Seal recording of this opera with Bruson-Mei-Lopardo-Allen never having heard the work before. While the Red Seal recording certainly did not sound bad, I couldn't help but think that, as the heroine, Mei missed a lot of opportunities to hit those incredible highs that Donizetti is so famous for. Since I wasn't familiar with the work, I only assumed that she opted to go an octave lower than Donizetti had originally intended for the part. Well, sure enough I finally saw the opera performed live in San Jose and was blown away by all the highs that the soprano hit throughout the show. I immediately purchased this recording to see if the Norina in this particular performance (Barbara Hendricks) offered a more gutsy performance and boy does she ever! Mei's voice on the Red Seal recording is undeniably beautiful, but Hendricks simply blows her out of the water with all of her vocal fireworks in this recording. The orchestras and male performers are equally good in both, but if you love the sound of a bel canto soprano hitting an incredible high note, then forget about the RCA recording and go for this one instead.

4 out of 5 stars TOO GOOD FOR OBSCURITY.......2000-08-28

This is one of Rossini's most lively, exciting dramatic operas. It is also in some ways different than his other output. There are some daring modulations, no crescendos, and some innovative formal structures. As far as this performance goes, Claudio Scimone does a superb job of directing the orchestra and chorus, never overshadowing the singers. His pacing is perfect. As the eponymous heroine, Cecilia Gasdia is in quite good voice, is expressive, and can handle the coloratura. Bernarda Fink has got to be an underestimated opera singer! She has a beautiful voice, a large range, and can she sing coloratura! Godfrey Daniels! Jose Garcia (Polidoro) on the other hand, does a few things nicely, but basically, his razor-edged voice could open a can. He is definitely the weak link in this cast. Tenor Chris Merritt has an astonishing range; in this performance he sings a A on the bottom space of the bass clef clearly and strongly, and also sings a powerful D above tenor high C. He sings the part of Antenore with beauty and power. Bill Matteuzzi, the other tenor, is also in good voice as Ilo, but sometimes his coloratura is good, sometimes it is messy, particularly in descending passages (which are more difficult from a support standpoint than ascending passages.) He basically sings with a good sound, except for some awful forays above tenor high C, where the tonal production becomes excruciatingly shrill. The secondary singers perform their parts in the spirit of the production. The improvisations taken with high notes and the decorations added to second stanzas of cabalettas, which are common here, were not sanctioned by Rossini. He hated this practice, so he wrote out all the ornamentation as he wished it to be. This, however,is not to keep this recording from being a must for your library. It ranks highly on Halvor's Personal Favorites List and it will on yours, too.

This CD is a "keeper" from Pearl! By all means buy without fear of the traditional hiss and scratch from vintage recordings...You won't find that on this wonderful CD! Maria Gay, Sigrid Onegin, Dame Clara Butt, Helene Jung, Louise Homer and a Gladys Knight I had never heard of...All fairly jump out of the CD and sound recently recorded! A 12 on a scale of 1 - 10, especially since Pearl has tended to supply hiss, scratch & popcorn on many of their CDs...Edward Norton END

These Canzonette are Monteverdi's earliest secular works. His previous two collections having been church music; the Sacrae cantiunculae for 3 voices of 1582, and the Madrigali spirituali a 4 of 1583. These are lightweight works, as you would expect, but not childish by any means. Monteverdi is already showing artful word play, and the thin booklet gives a few examples. What it doesn't give, which is unforgiveable, is texts - although the canzonette are by minor poets the words are still the whole point here, and the listener's Italian will need to be pretty fluent to pick up what the composer is saying in the interplay between lyric and music. As a consolation this CD is packed to the limit; Playing time 78'01.
