Former touring singer for the Gipsy Kings Kiko Motos was seeking out the fresh Gypsy sound of tomorrow when he realized the sound he sought was right under his own nose in his son Juanito's flamenco-Gypsy band, Gipsyland. Kiko gave the quartet of twentysomething guitarists his experienced Gypsy vocals, and the young musicians gave Kiko their free vision of the Gypsy tradition. This exchange and the production talent of Mark Taylor and Brian Rawling, who'd aided in the success of Cher's comeback album,
Believe, and Enrique Iglesias's single "Bailamos," made for this strong debut album of 12 original songs and one cover. The CD sings vivaciously with fertile musicianship and poppish energy that stays well within the boundaries of good taste. "Torito" uses Latin-jazz-style horns to spice up the flamenco flavor, while "Viva la Música" charges through in an anthemlike chorus over infectious dance-pop rhythms. "Olé Olá" hearkens back to the Gipsy Kings' "Djobi Djoba," jumping with a pulsating beat, swinging chorus, and vibrant percussive clapping. In short, anyone in love with the feel-good pop-flamenco of the Gipsy Kings will delight in Gipsyland's passionate, uplifting music.

Very Enjoyable for all music fans.......2006-03-02
This is very good collection of music that brings to life a wide variety of music that is both old and contemporary. The selections vary from composers, historical and famous such as Pavarotti and Puccini to today's James Horner (Titanic, A Beauituful Mind) and John Williams (Star Wars, Sabrina, Jaws, Saving Private Ryan).
If you enjoy the sounds of Sarah Brightman, Charlotte Church, Enya, Kate Bush, Andrea Bocelli, and various theatre music (Andrew Lloyd Webber (Evita, Cats), then you will find this collection worthy of your appreciation.
I have often wondered why classical music radio channels do not play modern composers (i.e., Horner, Willams), and am glad that this album gives them credit that they deserve. There is so many good compositions being created every day that only appear to have a voice on the big screen, which is unfortunate.
Track 11, composed by The Doors, and is a nice version, indeed. I also enjoy the Bond players giving a new twist to some old favourites.
Ciao,
Neil
Absolutely Amazing! Two CDs packed with the world's most beautiful classical music..........2005-11-08
First, let me begin by saying that I am by no means an expert in classical music, but have grown to appreciate it immensely in the past year. I can say wholeheartedly that this is the most beautiful compilation of music I have ever had the pleasure of listening to. It's simple irresistible. There are few words to describe how emotional it is to hear Pavarotti sing "II Canto", or Placido Domingo belt out "Questa o quella". You just get numb with joy!! I have NO idea what they are saying but a translation not necessary. The entire collection (TWo jammed-packed CDs) is phenomenal (excluding the selections from "Bond" which I found to be particularly annoying and not at all "classical" in the true sense of the word). There is something here for everyone, regardless of your personal musical tastes or tolerances.
A guaranteed hit -- Don't miss this one.
CD One
Andrea Bocelli "En Aranjuez con tu amor"
Bryn Terfel - "Granada"
Bond - "Viva" ( not my favorite, sounds almost disco-ish)
Hayley Westenra - "Pokarekare Ana"
Luciano Pavarotti - "Una Mattina"
Katherine jenkins - "Time To Say Goodbye" (a heart stopper - so beautiful!)
Duel - "Canon" (lovely!)
Janine Jansen - "Allegro from 'Spring'"
Andreas Scholl - "Ombra mai fu"
Nigel Kennedy - "The Unknown Soldier"
Kiri Te Kanawa - "Nuns' Chorus"
Nelson Freire - "Chopin Etude No. 1 op. 25
Julian Lloyd Webber - "Flight of the Bumble-bee"
James Horner - "For the Love of a Princess
Hans Zimmer & Lisa Gerrard "Now We Are Free"
Renee Fleming - "Mesicku na nebi hlubokem"
Russell Watson - "Amore e Musica"
CD TWO
Luciano Pavarotti - "II Canto" (I MUST see him sing this in person!!)
Placido Domingo - "Questa o quello" (I never tire of hearing this)
Andrea Bocelli & Bryn Terfel - "the Pearl Fisher's Duet"
Jose Carreras - "Funiculi, funicula
Dominc Miller & Kaori Muraji - "Fragile"
Tavener - "Song for Athene"
Josep Calleja - "La donna e mobile"
Jean-Yves Thibaudet - "Gymopedie No. 1"
Juan Diego Florez - "Una furtiva lagrima"
Kathleen Ferrier - "Blow the Wind Southerly"
Angela Gheorghiu - "Ave Maria"
Janine Jansen - "Schindler's List Main Theme"
Bond - "explosive"
Secret Garden - "You Raise Me Up"
Hayley Westenra - "Never Say Goodbye"
The Three Tenors - "Nessun Dorma"
Enjoy!

Album Description
Following on the enormous success of her first recording for CBC RECORDS - Joyous Light (CBC SMCD 5215) - the stunning young Canadian lyric soprano ISABEL BAYRAKDARIAN turns her attention to the seductive colours and rhythms of Spain and Latin America. The centre piece of this recording is the vocal evergreen, Bachianas Brasileiras # 5 for soprano and eight cellos by Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos. After winning the Metropolitan Opera National Auditions in 1997, Isabel (who is of Armenian descent) has gone on to make debuts with such international companies as the Metropolitan Opera (New York), Lyric Opera of Chicago, Paris Opera and La Scala (Milan), Semperoper (Dresden) and the Canadian Opera Company (Toronto).
Customer Reviews:
Isabel's voice is enchanting!.......2006-10-12
I had never heard of Isabel Bayrakdarian before. I was looking for a copy of Obradors' "Chiquitita la Novia" and happened to come upon this cd. Am I glad I bought it, in fact, I'm wearing it out. Her voice is like a bright
sunlight. Her interpretations are exquisite. My favorite on the recording is Granados' "La Maja y el Ruisenor".
Brava Isabel!
A real diamond!.......2006-04-13
I heard this voice first time on CBC Radio - from a concert in Toronto. It was magical! Soon after, I had a chance to listen to her in recital and this was an EVENT! Over two thousand people in the concert hall were holding their breath for two hours and it seemed that the hall itself became small and cozy. It was indeed a contact soul to soul.
Isabel has a rare talent that combines beautiful tone, clarity and unbelievable fluidity of her voice, intelligent thinking, good sensitive heart and generous nature. You believe every intonation, every nuance. She is always authentic, always noble and her expressivity is never forced, emotions are never overacted.
This CD captures well her magic voice. And God, she is amazing in pianissimos! That's why to me, the Lullaby by Xavier Montsalvatge with its softness and warmth is the highlight of this recording.
Amazing amazing stuff.......2004-10-07
The only reason I didn't give this disc five stars is because I'm not too crazy about Grandos' "Tonadillas." They aren't bad, but they're an incredibly weak opening group and the piano is a bit bouncy and boppy when compared to the more somber numbers on this disc with the cello ensemble.
I first fell in love with Bayrakdarian's voice on the CD "Joyous Light," a collection of Armenian liturgical music arranged for soprano and orchestra (some of it just solo voice.) This disc intrigued me because of her incredible voice and the somewhat off the beaten path repertoire & instrumentation (soprano, piano & cello ensemble!?!) I was happy to see a young, amazing talent NOT do a disc of Italian or German arias. Her CDs definately seem to explore the lesser known repertoire and that's to be commended, because we get to hear a stellar voice bring some real gems to light. Interesting that soprano's solo disc includes an instrumental piece, but it fits in nicely and is certainly appreciated by this listener.
The first two of the Rodrigo madrigales are arrestingly beautiful. The disc as a whole is sublime. She's definately one to watch. I can't think of another soprano I'd rather hear these days than Bayrakdarian. I'm flying back to my hometown next year to her in concert. It's months & months away and I can't think of another performance anytime soon that I'm looking this forward to.
Fascinating Program Beautifully Performed.......2003-11-21
There's been a lot of buzz lately about a young soprano just emerging up in Canada, a striking-looking young woman still in her twenties, winner of the Met Auditions, who has a burgeoning career in opera and recital. Her name is Isabel Bayrakdarian, member of an Armenian family who immigrated to Canada in 1989. She apparently had a nice untrained voice but didn't begin training professionally until 1993; meanwhile she had gotten a degree in biomedical engineering. But only four years later she won the Met Auditions and a couple of years later recorded a CD of seemingly esoteric Armenian songs that became a runaway best-seller in Canada. She made her Metropolitan début in 2002 in the role of Catherine in William Bolcom's 'A View from the Bridge.' This CD is a recording of a program that had been presented on CBC Radio and featuring pianist James Parker, himself a virtuoso with a solo career, and ten Toronto cellists led by cello soloist and Canadian Symphony principal, Bryan Epperson. And all of it in music by Hispanic composers.
First, the program is well-constructed, alternating vocal/piano music with vocal/cello ensemble music, with cello ensemble music. Timbres are changed often enough that one's ear does not tire. Second, every bit of the program is superbly performed. Pride of place must be given to Miss Bayrakdarian, whose voice is crystalline and yet imbued with a womanly sensuality that well serves the alternately sultry and kittenish Spanish music present here. She sings Granados's delicious 'Four Tonadillas' with the kind of charm that I thought only a native Spaniard could bring to it. She negotiates the agréments and their subtle alterations of intonation so typical of Spanish singing with complete mastery. Late in the program she performs, with the cello ensemble, the ever-popular Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5 as well as I've ever heard it. She also inhabits the sung version of Granados's 'La Maja y el Ruiseñor' ('The Maiden and the Nightingale') arranged for the opera he made from his piano suite 'Goyescas.'
The cello group plays Pablo Casals's arrangement of the Catalan Christmas carol, 'El Cant dels Ocells' ('The Song of the Birds'). And they lend a hand in Joaquin Rodrigo's 'Cuatro madrigales amatorios' ('Four Love Madrigals'), with cello ensemble accompaniment arranged (as in others here recorded) by Peter Tiefenbach. I particularly liked the interplay of teasing soprano and sporty cellos in 'Vos me matásteis' ('I die for love of you'), the second of this set, which is then followed by a bang-up performance of the familiar, catchy 'De los álamos vengo, madre' ('I've been down by the poplars, mother').
Fernando Obradors wrote wonderful songs that occasionally get sung by non-Spanish singers--I remember once being entranced by Elly Ameling singing the set recorded here by Bayrakdarian with superb assistance from pianist Parker, 'Canciones clásicas españolas' ('Classic Spanish Songs'). And I must say that at times I hear a hint of Ameling in Bayrakdarian's voice, something I call 'a smile in the voice.' This set is followed by an expert arrangmement, this time by Claude Kenneson, of Manuel de Falla's 'Suite populaire espagnole' that employs the cello ensemble (with some melting solo work by Epperson, their leader) playing three all-instrumental pieces and then accompanying Bayrakdarian in three of the six songs.
The CD is rounded out by Xavier Montsalatge's Lullaby from 'Cinco canciones negras,' the aforementioned Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5, and then the song that gives this album its title, Jayme Ovalle's 'Azulão' ('Bluebird'). The latter uses all the forces available here--soprano, pianist, cellists--in a haunting lament: 'Go bluebird, bluebird, companion of mine, go! Go see my faithless love.'
I cannot praise this issue highly enough. Ms Bayradkarian's voice is world-class and she sings with great musicality and feeling. Her accompanists are flawless. The recorded sound is quite good. The unattributed notes are very helpful. There are full translations of all the sung texts.

Emusica off to a Latin start with Fania catalog.......2007-01-23
Fania's catalog has been so mismanaged nay just plain neglected over the past 30 years (i once bought a copy of a willie colon lavoe cd - te mato- and it sounded like total distortion ... there had clearly been a problem with it and yet there it was) I have high hopes that things will improve now that Emusica bought the catalog but this Barretto compilation gives me some cause for concern. I do not understand the philosophy behind this compilation... it seems fania just wanted to include 1 or 2 tracks from each album with no concer for what they were including... Why would you include the same number of tracks (and shorter as they were done earlier) from seminal albums such as Acid, Together and Hard Hands as you would from Barretto's latter day efforts which had nowhere the impact and to these ears sound like more standard fare salsa. In fact the first cd is the one with the different rhythms etc... but they neglected some incredible stuff including some tracks he recorded with fania all stars which he wrote and should have been part of this compilation (i'm thinking of some tracks from the live at the red garter cds).. meanwhile the second cd is mainly post 72 Barretto and most tracks sound fairly similar...It just does not pack the same punch... Since CD1 has 15 minutes empty space and CD2 has another 15 or so they could have easily included more from early era Barretto... The liner notes are pretty shoddy affair with for example in the english notes riverside records honcho orrin keepnews (who anybody that knows anything about music knows who he is) is mispelled orrin keepnuevo as if they did a spellcheck in spanish or something and replaced "news" with "nuevo"...lame...barretto deserves a 100% treatment.. the notes tell us what album the songs come from but provide no dates, session players or anything else!!! the session players deserve better!... silly.. this is the typical mishandling of art by people who traditionally own latin music catalogs.. if they really want to do for fania what blue note did with its back catalog, which is what they've claimed, they got a long way to go.... also, there is no explanation of what happened when barretto's musicians left him around 72 to form their own group Tipica 73.. I give this four stars because the music is just great (although in my opinion too much 70s stantard salsa) and not enough early bugalu etc from the 60s... in fairness i should also say the sound is pretty good with two notable exceptions which are tracks 6 and 10 both coincidentally (not!) from "hard hands" which sound shoddy and buzz.. clearly an inferior source was used for these as they do not sound at all as good as the rest.. they should have just used a mint lp which they could have found on ebay for a bill... as mentioned the song selection is questionable and the liner notes leave a lot to be desired..it just seems like an opportunity was wasted to give barretto the 100% class act compilation he deserves... final quibble: to call this comp "a man and his music" is probably not the right way to go because barretto was very much about jazz too which is not represented here...
THE LATE GREAT RAY BARRETTO.......2007-01-07
IF YOU DON'T WANT TO GO OUT AND BUY ALL OF RAY BARRETTO'S ALBUMS, THEN BUY THIS ONE. IT IS A GREAT COMPILATION OF HIS MUSIC FROM THE FANIA AND TICO LABELS. I GUARANTEE YOU WILL LOVE THIS CD!!!!!! LONG LIVE RAY BARETTO!!! SOME OF IT MAY SOUND A BIT DATED (60'S AND 70'S), BUT IT IS GREAT MUSIC NEVERTHELESS.
A superb tribute to an all-time Salsa legend........2006-08-07
The late great Ray Barretto's recordings for the Tico and Fania labels represent an extremely important chapter in the history of Salsa and this compilation offers a fine (if incomplete) overview of his illustrious career. Hopefully, Emusica Records (Fania's new owner) will reissue all of Ray's Tico and Fania CDs. Most of his major hits and trademark tunes are here and no self-serving Barretto fan should be without this great compilation.

Album Description
Spanish language students and classes will enjoy these 28 fun-filled, entertaining songs written and sung by teacher and songwriter Elise Carr Sumner. 'Viva La Musica' was originally written for high school Spanish students, and all ages can enjoy the songs and learn from them. It comes with a free 61-page lyric booklet with the Spanish lyrics and English translation for each song. The songs range from those that teach numbers and basic phrases such as "How are you? and "What's your name?" to more sophisticated ones that teach advanced grammar. The songs are appropriate for high school students during the first three years of study and college students during the first year and a half. Dr. Karen Steves, a Spanish professor at Ball State University states, "Singing is a wonderful way to learn Spanish. Vocabulary, grammar and correct pronunciation are learned without painful memorization. Retention is greater, too. These songs are short, vocabulary-specific and fun."

Simple but lovely.......2007-04-30
These songs are simple but lovely to listen to. And the booklet makes following along and learning very easy. This is a very good CD for an introduction to Spanish with a child, and for adults too!
short and sweet.......2007-01-10
As a native Spanish speaker who has tried to teach the language to Americans several times, I think this CD would be very helpful to develop a basic vocabulary for beginners in an entertaining way. Most of the songs repeat basic phrases, making it easy to catch up with the enunciation and a booklet with the lyrics in Spanish and English help the student sing along. The fact that the author is herself an American Spanish teacher allows for a basic Spanish with no regional accent to confuse the listener. "Viva la Música" is well made, edited, and put together; the 28 songs are short and easy to learn and have sweet, catchy lyrics.
Viva la música - fun learning aid!.......2006-12-19
"Viva la música" offers original songs which are perfect for the classroom or for reinforcing Spanish expressions, vocabulary, and grammar to the eager learner. These songs are fun, rich in cultural references, and so helpful in the teaching of Spanish! The grammar is flawless, the tunes are catchy, and the songs are very well crafted to allow repetition in the chorus of valuable Spanish expressions or grammatical structures. I wholeheartedly recommend this CD. I have used it in my classroom for a few years now, and it is a favorite of the students. I really, really like it.
Great songs for Spanish learners.......2006-12-18
This CD is a great one for beginning Spanish speakers of all ages! I teach Spanish to a wide range of learners--from preschoolers through 8th graders (in an after-school program) to adults who attend evening classes at a university extension. I play these songs with all of them during my lessons because singing the language helps them remember it. I choose one of the songs from this CD for nearly every lesson or series of lessons I plan/teach. My students often end up purchasing the CD because they enjoy the songs so much. And, the ones who do purchase it report back to me that they keep it in their car constantly for practice. It's really true that when you hear/repeat spoken Spanish you may or may not remember it, but when you hear/sing in a language, you're more likely to remember it because the music gives your brain a "hook" to grab on to.
What I love about the CD is that Ms. Sumner has crafted songs that both entertain and teach. I play the routine song, "Siempre La Misma," when I teach reflexive verbs in the present tense--and then I find myself humming it while getting ready in the morning! This is only one example of the many great selections on the CD. Others include songs about numbers, greetings, ordering at a cafe, finding a room, going to the beach, falling in love, etc. On the first day of a new beginning Spanish class, I play the song, "No Hablo Mucho Español (I Don't Speak Much Spanish)" and tell them they might feel this way now, but by the end of the class they'll feel much more proficient. The song has great vocab, though, for helping a beginning Spanish speaker slow down a native speaker or for explaining that he/she is just learning the language.
These are songs that truly stick with you--and teach the same words and phrases used every day in native speech. Even intermediate/advanced students would enjoy this CD as review/practice. It's a great resource for Spanish learners! Thanks, Ms. Sumner!
Very Dull and Boring.......2006-12-11
This CD is terrible. The songs are boring and the melodies dull. There are much better choices available: UniVerse of Song by Maria Del Rey and El Doble de Amigos are two delightful CDs that are way better than this. No one in my family wants to listen to this insipid CD.

This exchange and the production talent of Mark Taylor and Brian Rawling, who'd aided in the success of Cher's comeback album, Believe, and Enrique Iglesias's single "Bailamos," made for this strong debut album of 12 original songs and one cover. --Karen K. Hugg
Customer Reviews:
Gipsyland's - Viva La Musica.......2006-08-07
Go buy this CD! Every song is great! Just listened to the first two tracks at the store and I knew I had to have them. Wonderful... just have to dance to this music! If they do not tour the USA, I'll fly to France to see them!
Slick production for energetic voices and guitars.......2001-08-07
I love this CD. In fact, I ended up visiting Amazon and writing this review because I was hoping to find a follow-up to this gorgeous CD. This CD is produced by the same british producers that made slick dance hits for Enrique Iglesias and Cher. Their gentle elegant dance beats work like magic under the passionate macho male flamenco vocals and the army of rythm spanish guitars. Buy this CD, you wont regret it.
Good start.......2000-06-11
I appreciate the basis on guitars that is missing in most music. Gipsyland is fresh and innovative. For a first album they have done a very good job. I am hoping not to be disappointed by their second album when it comes out. I happen to enjoy well played guitar music along these lines. This hit the spot. Nice inclusion of subject matter as well. Kiko does have a close sound to Nicolas Reyes, lead singer to the Gipsy Kings, but I find Kiko's vocals a bit more vibrant perhaps it was the backup music. Nice inclusion of the traditional hand clapping accompanyment but with a new flare. The guitars seemed to blend and support any drumms or other instruments there by giving the listener a feel for the background from which this music arose. The history of a Flamenco background is obvious even though this is not a strictly Flamenco album. They were not trying to be Flamenco guitarists, but giving a new and interesting twist to an already rich style of music. I feel that this is a good album and look forward to more from this band.
Interesting.......2000-05-05
"Viva La Musica" is the debut album for the band "Gipsyland." Although the majority of the band members are younger relatives of the French international superstars "The Gypsy Kings" The lead singer of the "Gypsy Kings" lends his brilliant vocal power to a number of the songs. This album is not simply another Gypsy Kings album which could disappoint some people. The music of "GipsyLand" is basically vibrant pop with none of the traditional Flamenco passion with its Moorish inspired harsh canto jondo. This is a studio sound robbed of the rough immediacy of the intimacy of the tabloa. Which the "Gypsy Kings" who I have seen in concert twice could reproduce even in a space as huge as the "Royal Albert Hall" in London. The band's obvious target is a younger audience which indicates a strong fusion appeal after all Flamenco music already has many of these cross cultural elements in place.. However sacrificing depth for eclectic flourishes has a tendency to reduce the GipsyLand sound into a confusing sea of overproduction. Overall a good if somewhat bland in parts.
If you are tired of waiting for the Gipsy Kings.......2000-04-04
to come out with a new CD you need to wait no longer. Buy this CD. Besides the great price this is as close as you are going to get to the GK sound. I might like it even better. Are you tired of bogus recommendations for other pseudo GK CDs ? If you are let me turn you on to another great group "Chico and the Gypsies". They also have an ex GK in their group. Vagaundo is good but look for the Nomade an import, 18 vs. 11 songs. I just looked and Vagabundo was listed "out of stock", if you like this sound don't let these get away.
