Beyond all description..........2006-09-19

As a boy, I heard so many hyperbolic references to the legendary Enrico Caruso that I chose to purchase a remastered copy of his "Greatest Hits" when I first began to acquire recordings as a young man. Soon after, I discovered Pavarotti and my life was changed by his music. Caruso ended up in the Goodwill Store. I am convinced that in 500 years, should the earth cool again and the Muslim hoards abate, the civilized world will still tell tales of the greatest tenor. I have often found myself grumpy when searching for recordings of Pavarotti because of the inconsistent fidelity of the recordings. That search for the definitive Pavarotti recordings, regarding both content and fidelity, has ended with the release of this extraordinary collection. Worth it's weight in gold, the Puccinni Volume (#5) alone is enough to send someone like me into hyperspace. I am astounded by the beauty and power of these performances. I will always remember the day, not long ago, when a NPR commentator glibly mentioned between the weather and the night's playlist the terrible words, "Luciano Pavarotti has announced that he is retiring from Opera." I felt as if something indescribably beautiful was fading from the world. Of course, beauty in all of its earthly forms is fleeting at best, but these discs contain a reflection of it that will surely bolster any soul.

An Absolute Must-Have for Any Pavarotti Fan.......2004-01-09

...and that certainly goes without saying. My one tiny little problem with it is that his recordings of "Santa Lucia" and "Caruso" are not on this incredible box-set. Even though I have those recordings on other CDs, I still think those are very important pieces to include on this set (assuming that this set of Pavi hits would be the only compilation that that any fan of this phenomenal tenor would have). He is probably my biggest idol, and he deserves to have been one of the biggest opera stars in history.

Megan Leyva******Tejano's New Princess!!!!!!!!!!.......2005-07-09

This is Megan's third album released by Hacienda Records in 2004, and it is one of the best tejano records that I've heard. This album is gold, and her beautiful voice is so full of energy she sings the soul of all these songs. My personal favorites are "Con La Misma Moneda", "La Llave", "Y Sigues Siendo Tu", and of course "Cara De Angel". The song "Y Sigues Siendo Tu", is of course Shania Twain's hit song "You're Still the One", and Meagan does an incredible interpretation of that lovely song. Wonderful album and a pleasure to listen to, there is no doubt that Megan is tejano's newest princess. Rock on Megan!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Fleta: A truly magnificent tenor- cheap.......2005-07-28

A very good quality compilation at a very good price- part of the nibus prima voce series of which I have many items.

Miguel Fleta was a tenor of magnificent ability: virile as a Corelli but with a more beautiful tone in addition to a nearly effortless top. The voice is nearly identical from top to bottom. Listne to the first aria from La Favorita- he walks up to a high C# effortlessly and with a totally full sound that seems not to modify at any point along the way. Also his morendo is almost unbelievable- pulling off of high c's like young di Stefano but without the vocal flaws. Apparently, Fleta has a few critics, but I cannot imagine why.

How can you possibly go wrong with a tenor this good at a price like this?

Alfredo Kraus isn't known as having a particularly beautiful voice. Instead he is singled out as being elegant. He is indeed elegant. Before listening to this disc I never realized how much ring his voice had and yes it is rather beautiful. Most if not all of the selections here are from full length recordings. The French selections are outstanding. Its hard to imagine a better interpretation (except for the Fille du Regiment aria- sorry, Pavarotti can't be beat there.) The Traviata cabaletta really sounds flat without the normal (interpolated I guess) ending on a high note. I wondered why Kraus would avoid it, but then I realized the conductor was Muti. The standout selection on this disc is A te, o cara from Puritani. Its absolutely incredible. Unfortunantly, that recording is no longer available at least in the U.S.

Il Grando Fernando!.......2001-04-07

I enjoyed this recording a lot. Fernando did have a lovely voice. I myself have been a big fan of Edwardian Era Opera recordings for seven years. However, he has a tendancy to attack some of his parts where they should have been sung more smoothly. The duets with the other baritones are nice, but the singers and even Fernando himself kind of spoke some of their lines rather than singing them. For example, Rossini's "All'idea" and Donizetti's "Obbligato". I have a problem with singers who speak the words when they should sing them. Sometimes unnecessary candenzas are performed, which could have picked up a little speed. Other than that, this gentleman had one of the most fantastic tenor ranges. It was a shame that the London critics did not give his voice the review it could have been capable of deserving. More orchestral accompaniments would have sounded nice. But this recording is a must have for lovers of early opera records.

John McCormack's career as an opera star was relatively brief, though it included a number of engagements at Covent Garden and the Met between 1907 and 1919. It was as a recitalist, from about 1910 until the mid-1930s, that he enjoyed his greatest success. Yet he might have ended up a footnote in musical history had it not been for one thing: the phonograph. McCormack's 791 surviving recordings, made between 1904 and 1942, cover a formidable range of material, showing what a versatile artist he was. His vibrant timbre and clarion brilliance--so refreshing to encounter, even in 70-year-old transcriptions--utterly annihilate the wimpy efforts of such popular modern-day "voices" as Andrea Bocelli. Here was someone who really knew how to sing, who cultivated a burnished beauty of tone from bottom to top, whose delivery sparkled. All of that can be heard on this three-CD compilation from Nimbus, with individual discs showcasing the Irish-born tenor in operatic selections, popular and Irish song, and recital repertory recorded with the violinist Fritz Kreisler.
