Huey is out of this world!!!.......2005-05-26

Think Marc Anthony without any raspiness and a whole extra octave at the top of his range.
He doesn't convey quite as much passion or drama as Marc in his performance but he's still good and his range is really impressive.
Huey's first language is English and it shows here and there. This CD is 95% in Spanish.
It's great and I also recommend "Music For My Peoples". That CD has a couple of tracks in English.

a one-of-a-kind album...........2004-12-03

I have to say that Huey Dunbar truly made a smooth transition from Dark Latin Groove to his solo aspirations on this debut album. When I was first introduced to Dark Latin Groove, one of the first elements I fell in love with was Huey's beautiful, sexy, expressive and soulful voice. It was comparable to a young Michael Jackson, except more heartwrenching.

There is a wonderful cross-section of sounds here. We have the sultry son ("Yo Si Me Enamore"). the touching ballad ("Con Cada Beso"). and funky hip hop/latin fusion ("Chikicha").

It's a shame that there aren't more people who are familiar with this amazing singer and that he disappeared from the salsa scene after only a couple of years. This is a great album because it appeals to audiences familiar with various styles of Latin music and others who might only know about salsa and aren't aware of the numerous other styles in music.

Just an ok CD.......2004-01-05

While I miss DLG, I think Dunbar's solo efforts have been good. However, one of the things that really drives me crazy is that he cannot sing in Spanish. At least he's learned that he doesn't have to sing every word of every song at the top of his lungs--in "Cambio de Que" he shows some vocal nuances that are nice, although he still likes to force the bravado technique. Overall, the CD is just OK.

First Solo effort was good.......2003-06-15

Ok, Dunbar's first release "YO SI ME ENAMORE" was an above average display of his vocal talent and George's creative spectrum. Though it's been over 2 years since this album came out, songs such as the title track "YO SI ME ENAMORE", and "CON CADA BESO" have proven to be songs that only Dunbar could pull off. Many people (Traditionalists) assumed Dunbar to be a non-traditional salsero, and expected strictly ritmo salsa from him.
News flash, Dunbar is an ecclectic artist with an ecclectic background and roots. Unfortunately on this album there are weak points ("LO SIENTO", "CHIKICHA", and the oddly placed 80s sounding hook "ELLA"). But considering that this was Dunbar's first effort, and that his creative input only be so much at the time he did his part (which was to interpret vocally), and he did it well. Dunbar's RnB sound is a welcomed vibe. Versus those pop singers in the genre who attempt to pull off the RnB/Gospel tone voice, and fall well short of the benchmark, Dunbar's New York surroundings and urban influence has helped him to attain a youthful crowd internationally, and expose youths in America, who may find old-school salsa a little boring at a certain point. With the exception of the late Frankie Ruiz's unique husky tone, energy, and suggestive lyrics, and the always consistent Tito Nieves there are few singers out there who can take a traditional ritmo and make it brand new. Dunbar didn't pull it completely off, but then again I don't think that was his goal. But during the DLG hay day, they made salsa modern and urban. This album was to break away from that and venture a little further out.

Look for the new album to drop soon, with even more of an urban feel, and even broader fan base. Continued development, that's what music is about.

Mixed Styles.......2003-01-24

Most of the Huey Dunbar fans rebember his voice strongly attached to the DLG musical style, with this CD Huey shows that he can perform in any rithm from bachata to balad. Certainly this CD didn't have the same success of his salsa CDs because of its experimental nature. I expect more mature material coming from Huey's future works.
