la banda gorda on its climax.......2000-04-08

although la banda gorda exists already more than two decades and is possibly the most popular band in the dominican republic's merengue scene, this album shows in which direction the development of this music could be able to go if all the bands would make the same progress with each album like this guys. a lot of different beats and rhythms (but it is still merengue which caracterizes almost the whole record) together with the typical "i love her so much but i don't know how to show it" or "she left me for this other guy but i will never be able to forget her and i'll do everything to get her back" lyrics are not a guarantee for a good album normally, but the ensemble of a pretty good production and musician combinated with an extraordinary songwriter, and the process of trying to make this record as good as possible are much more than that: they are an important fact that the development of that kind of music will no stop before everybody dances to the common "sounds as boring as always" reggae or salsa beats. believe me and check "pa' que no descuides lo tuyo" o "alegre y triste", and you'll never get this two songs out of your ears!

This record will transport you into a different world of sound and spirit: simpler, purer, more tranquil and serene. The program consists of chants from the 12th to the 15th centuries and includes several Sephardic songs--some quite dancelike, some rather mournful. Though the melodic range of the chants is naturally very limited, and the prevailing mood is devotional and somber, they have a lot of textural diversity. Some are purely instrumental, others are for one or two unaccompanied voices. When the tenor and bass sing alone, the latter provides a drone to the former's more florid line, or they move in open intervals, alternating between unison and solo. Their duets with the soprano combine unison, conversational give and take, and counterpoint. Most of the chants use a wide variety of vocal and instrumental combinations, with fascinating results. The final song employs the entire group; vigorous, assertive, and celebratory, it keeps adding voices and instruments, becoming increasingly elaborate.

The performing group is most admirable. Several singers also play numerous instruments, which include a citole, a cornemuse, a hackbrett simulating a psalterion, a Persian def, and a Syrian rek, in addition to the more familiar vieles and a large variety of flutes and percussion. Among the singers, tenor Hervé Lamy is outstanding. His voice is sweet and velvety, his expressiveness both chaste and intense.

The disc's packaging is odd. The booklet gives neither the texts nor any information about the music or the performers. But both the makers of the instruments, which are, of course, modern reproductions of the ancient originals, and the dates when they were made are listed in meticulous detail. --Edith Eisler

First Album After a 3-Year Hiatus.......2002-01-11

This is Zafra Negra's first cd since 1997 with "Con El Machete En La Mano". The group sounds refreshed under July Heredia who has been in the group the longest. After going with the departure of Ronny Soler and other members and the death of another it seems that we would never hear from them again. The disc contains 11 songs, 10 merengues and 1 bachata. Some songs are upbeat but there are some sleepy songs too; 3 and 5, which are also included in the later album "Juntos De Nuevo" and album were Ronny Soler returns and takes the lead vocals for 5 songs. The best songs for this album are 1 and 10.

Este disco de Zafra Negra es el mejor que he escuchado de este grupo en lo que va de ahora. Creo que el merengue de esta producción es golpeíto de punta a punta y va a poner a la gente a bailar sin lugar a dudas. No me sorprende porque su carrera ha sido muy exitosa y creo que ahora tiene pie firme en el mundo musical. Su producción de '98 es rica también y otros hits de Zafra Negra son: "lo que no conviene se deja" y "coqueta y sabrosa". ¡Que siga la Zafra con el machete en la mano!

La verdad que muy buen trabajo de zafra negra que siguen por el mismo camino como siempre excelentes!. Temas como : Tu fotografia,Ladrona de Amor Que no pare la Fiesta son ejemplos de como se debe hacer el merengue! no como otros que se venden y se pasan para el pop!. Con el machete en la mano! y te dije que tranquilo loco!

This recording brings together a variety of choral works by 20th century Latin American composers, all of whom find inspiration in folk culture. Chief among the composers represented here is Ariel Ramirez. Born in Santa Fe, Argentina, he roamed the South American hinterland in his early twenties playing piano and studying regional musical traditions. After a brief stint in Buenos Aires, he spent several years in Europe, studying in Madrid and Vienna and teaching music in a German convent. Returning to South America in 1954, he completed his musical training in Buenos Aires, where his politically engaged popular songs rapidly earned him renown as a leader of the nueva cancion movement. His breakthrough onto the international stage came in 1967 with the first performance and recording of the Misa Criolla (Mass in Native Style). The success of this innovative work owes much to its timing. Set in Spanish rather than Latin, it was one of the first major masses composed after the Second Vatican Council mandated the use of the vernacular. It also profited from the period’s burgeoning interest in folk music. As a result, the work quickly captured the imagination of audiences worldwide and has received thousands of performances. The mass’s reception abroad, where its style was perceived as novel and exotic, actually helped stimulate appreciation for native culture among more skeptical audiences back in Argentina. Like all Ramirez’ major works, the Misa Criolla draws substantially on the folk traditions in which he immersed himself as a young man. Lovely and inspiring.......2007-01-11

I love this music, and found this CD to have lyrical interpretations of the variety of Latin American music represented by it. However, I was a wee bit disappointed in one thing. I had a previous tape (lost it) of much of the same music, and the performers were less professional, meaning that the music gained in earthiness which I felt to be a plus. As this recording was done by professionals, it is lyric, musical, and lovely, but lacks that unsophisticated touch which I had liked. Still a very enjoyable recording, though.

Counterpoint's "Misa Criolla" is a gem .......2005-05-11

Ramirez' Misa Criolla is the epitomy of music that lets you know the minute you hear it that you are in South America. Additional Latin American folk songs combine to make this disk rich in a variety of moods and textures.

"Counterpoint" sing with clean precision creating a sound that feels more like a single instrument than the twelve or so singers who make up the group. Their virtuosity grows with every CD they produce. Add to this restrained but evocative instrumentation that makes the music sparkle and you find yourself enjoying the music as much as the performers clearly do.
