Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Latin-American maestros at their very best.......1999-09-09

This recording brings the music of great composers from Mexico,Brazil, and Argentina. The Huapango by Moncayo is played beautiful and a well performed solo for trumpet and trombone.Sensemaya is played with virtuosity."Estrllita" is the best known of all Mexican song here arrenged for strings is very charming. The "Trezinho do Caipira" by Villa-Lobos is performed here to great effect by the orchestra and its percussion section. The Obertura Festiva by Halfter is performed with grace.Galindo's "Sones Macriachi" is also a piece where a mariachi gorup is immitated also to great effect by the orchestra and I think that Mr.Galindo captured the spirit of Mexico very well here. Its a great recording.Thank you Naxos... Well done Mr. Batiz

5 out of 5 stars Exquisite Performance.......1999-08-03

Batiz does a magnificent job, especially with respect to Huapango. The orchestra is full and vibrant. As a brass player (trumpet), I listen especially close to this section of the orchestra. I must say that the brass met my expectations: they have great volume and lose neither control nor focus on fortissimo passages. All instruments with solo parts do an excellent job of finding a balance between projecting their sound and maintaining musicality. The trumpets in particular possess that "sizzling" or vibrating quality which characterizes the better players.

5 out of 5 stars beautiful mexican music.......1999-04-03

great music interpreted by a great director, maestro Batiz

    Album Description

    The Complete Caruso: Volumes 1 - 12

The Italian tenor Enrico Caruso holds a unique place in musical history, as the first operatic singer whose recordings sold in millions, and who created an international reputation on the strength of these. Caruso's robust tone and musical sincerity made him both an ideal stage and recording artist, whose voice the primitive acoustic recording technology of the early twentieth century was able to reproduce with startling fidelity. The Naxos Historical Caruso edition constitutes the complete cycle of all Caruso's recordings issued in chronological order. In addition, the transfers have been immaculately undertaken by top sound engineer Ward Marston, unrivalled for his knowledge of the specialized world of acoustic opera recordings, and his rare ability to retrieve all of the music lying in the grooves of the original recordings. Naxos Historical's incredible price (12 CD'S FOR THE PRICE OF 10) puts this unique legacy of great singing within the reach of all music-lovers. This! complete cycle of recordings represents a major document in the history of sound recording, and one which no collector and enthusiast of great singing will wish to be without. "There is no series of vocal records that have a greater documentary value, that meant more to the development of the phonograph record, or that are as consistently capable of providing pleasure to lovers of great singing. ...One of the most significant recording industry events of the decade." Fanfare

This may not be easy to get in the USA for very long.....don't miss it.

5 out of 5 stars Essential edition for opera lovers.......2005-02-01

This set gives you the opportunity to follow the entire recording career of one of the greatest singers in Operatic History. Enrico Caruso was the first superstar of the 20th century -- and this without the benefit of mass media. His person and his records were his greatest publicity.

The set begins with Caruso's Italian made recordings. They show a great raw talent. The artistry is lacking with many sobs, over acting and mistaken cues. The 1902 and 1903 clearly show a tenor with a lot to learn. But learn it he did. His 1904 sessions show a mature artist on par with any heard since. His voice matures before your very ears and by 1910, you wonder if you will ever listen to any other tenor the same way again.

The engineering used for this set is wonderful. There is no attempt at all to use the soundstream process of computer sound enhancement as heard on the RCA issued sets. These are near perfect mint conditioned discs copied by engineer extraordinary Ward Marston. They sound like natural 78s, they way Caruso himself must have heard the playbacks at the (RCA) Victor studios.

Also included are outtakes and extra takes. There is a "Celeste Aida" from 1908, complete with a broken high note, previously released by RCA in a 1973 set commemorating the tenor's centenary birthday. But there are new treasures here as well, including extra takes of two of Caruso's greatest recordings, the Italian song "L'Alba separa dalla l'uce ombra" and an aria from Rubinestine's Nerone. Listening to them, one wonders what Caruso could have possible thought inadquate in those long lost altenative takes.

Finally, there is the simple joy of hearing so many things so well sung. Caruso was the pinnacle of the tenor art. He can be compared to no other single tenor since ... he has the brilliant ring of Bjorling, the passion of Gigli, the beauty of Gedda, the youthful enthusiasm of Lanza, the warm tonal quality of Tucker, the pure strength of Corelli, the charasma of Pavarotti and the artestry of Domingo.

Whether you are an opera fan, a voice fan or just a music lover. This set is worth every penny.

5 out of 5 stars Caruso--All of the Legend in Great Sound.......2004-08-04

I've been scratching my head over Caruso re-issues over the past 30 years, and frankly didn't understand why the world needed another complete set of the great tenor's recordings. But Naxos hired the great Ward Marsden to re-master this set, which now comes to a triumphant conclusion with Volume 12. The price is astoundingly good in the bargain, with excellent liner notes on each issue. All the CDs are generously filled.

Caruso's robust, but never out-sized singing is a revelation. The voice has range, color, depth, size, spin, and superbly conveys pathos, comedy, elegance, power, and intimacy. Beginning in 1904 up through 1920, we get sixteen years of great singing. The voice got darker, but it certainly never lost its ability to astonish and console. There simply is no decline of vocal powers throughout the set. Even singing "Vecchia zimarra," Colline's coat aria from Puccin's LA BOHEME, Caruso is a revelation. He sang this bass aria for a colleague in vocal distress one evening at the Metropolitan Opera. Nobody knew it until later. Caruso sings very convincingly in the bass range.

This entire sets belongs in the collection of any serious vocal lover. He was a people's tenor, but one with a lot of class. He had the common touch, which means he appealed to everyone. More than 80 years later, Caruso's singing never ceases to amaze and thrill listeners. Gigli and Pavarotti both enjoyed bestselling recording careers and Pavarotti certainly has enjoyed as big a career in the modern era, but Caruso was still a bigger star in his time. Deservedly so, as these great records, both classical and popular, will attest.

5 out of 5 stars The final recording sessions........2004-07-21

Death intervened before the 47-year-old Enrico Caruso could continue to record beyond these sessions from 1919 and 1920. Six recording sessions yielded 17 items. They are all included here, together with an item from Caruso?s very first recording session transferred from a better copy than was used in Volume 1 of the Naxos Caruso series.

I read in the accompanying notes that Caruso?s vocal powers were in serious decline by the time these last recordings were made and that the Victor recording processes were less favorable to his voice during his last years. To my ears, neither of these assessments seems right. Listen, for example to Tracks 10 and 11, from September 1919. Never has a voice leapt out of loudspeakers with such power! True, it is a darker voice than it once was, but the effulgence of the voice and the confidence of the presentation is astounding, and the recording process seems to capture it all vividly.

A couple of curiosities are included in this 69 minute CD: a brass band rendition of a march written by Caruso, and a novelty vocal, mercifully not too long, called ?My Cousin Caruso? presented by Billy Murray.

    5 out of 5 stars Breathtaking.......2007-06-27

Caruso's performances are purely breathtaking. This set does not attempt to over-process the sound as some do. All the 78 RPM noise gets through and so does all the music. This is the way these recordings should be heard. Was Caruso's voice really that fantastic or is it just that the recording process of the day was perfectly suitable to his voice? It doesn't matter - what you will hear on each and every track is Caruso giving everything he's got. There will never be another like him, and there's no better way to get his material on CD than this series. The only thing you could do beter is get the original 78's.

5 out of 5 stars Caruso and colleagues, 1914-1916........2004-03-06

I'm not sure if Caruso admirers will rush to secure a copy of this ninth volume in the complete Naxos reissue series, but I can report that there are many great recordings here and not a few rarities.

One of the latter is the so-called "Coat Song" from Puccini's "La Boheme". According to one of the great stories in the annals of opera performance, Caruso agreed to sing this two minute piece in Act Four for his bass colleague whose voice had by then petered out during a performance at Philadelphia. With the bass miming and Caruso with his back to the audience the trick was successful. Caruso agreed to sing it again for a recording soon after, not for general issue but for distribution amongst friends. Another rarity is a "Carmen" duet he recorded in 1914 with Francis Alda. Two takes are here: one issued for the first time, the other not issued until the 1960s.

John McCormack was meanwhile achieving great sales with recordings in which he teamed with the violinist Fritz Kreisler. Two tracks here, featuring rare items not attempted by McCormack and Kreisler, have Caruso teamed with violinist Mischa Elman.

As for the great recordings, I would opt for the Verdi Requiem excerpt, and the wonderful aria from Gounod's "La Reine de Saba". The latter, as with many other items here, is sung in French. A disappointment is the "La Traviata" Brindisi. Perhaps Caruso and Alma Gluck had been drinking too much instead of singing about it.

      5 out of 5 stars Bella Musica.......2004-06-02

I was always "una amante di musica", especially musica classica, but books and TV were mostly my source of edutainment. I was actually forbidden by my Godfather to listen to it in the house. He said that it was for crazy people. So, I don't know much about opera, arias, oratorio, operettas nor cantors, but I do know what I like. I bought this CD, quite honestly, because I didn't have much to spend and I associate Caruso with tasteful classical music. When he was alive, my grandfather had met Caruso in the "Teatro Campamor" a company in Camaguey in the 1920's or so. I was really surprised. I really enjoyed Verdi's compositions. "Your Eyes Have Told Me What I Did Not Know" was amazing. What I loved about this CD is that it includes "El Milagro de la Virgen, zarzuela Flores purisimas." The recordings are fairly old and it sounds like your listening to a LP record, but that's part of its charm. It's a treat to hear "Don Juan's Serenade," composed by Pyotr Il'yich Tchaikovsky. Could it be based on Spanish Literario y poeta Jose Zorrilla's Don Juan Tenorio, of the 19th century? I mean. . . just the historical value alone is a good enough reason to own this volumn.

      Amazon.com essential recording

From the youthful bloom and impetuous swagger of Enrico Caruso's debut 1902 recordings to the darker, almost baritonal overtones typifying his final sessions before the acoustic horn, the singer's resplendent vocalism and generous performing style remain the archetype for Italian tenors. As a child of the late 19th century, Caruso was prone to embellish upon composers' texts, yet his passion, communicative power, and soaring musicality transcend time. The Italian sessions from 1902 to 1904 and Caruso's recordings with piano between 1904 and 1905, along with two later sides, receive conventional, unaltered transfers. The remaining material is restored via the controversial Soundstream computer process, which fleshes out the lower partials of the voice while compromising its overtones, relegating the orchestral accompaniment to a rumbling backdrop rather than contributing partner. Yet many will find the Soundstream transfers easier on the ear. Those who wish to acquire the complete Caruso in a single package at midprice should not hesitate to purchase this significant set. --Jed Distler

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars No - the deffect is NOT on EVERY set!!!.......2006-12-08

The deffect that some previous reviewers were so mad about did not happen to my set. After purchasing it for two years and listening to the disks every other day, they are still shiny and beautiful like new. You can't use the word "EVERY" so cavelierly, because you have not listened to EVERY set.

5 out of 5 stars The Master of Italian Tenor Singing-Get it.......2006-05-20

I have been collecting Caruso performance since 1960- of course they were on vinyl- I even had some 78's. I think the 78 and vinyl records produced a warmer tone, but it is a delight to have the Master's performances in one place. My vinyls are worn to shreds.

Except for the lighter and bel canto roles, Caruso is supreme in the Italian and some of the French repetoire. Last night I listened to the Quartet from Martha for the first time in many years. Caruso sings about a 20 second phrase beginning "Dormi
Pur" which had me in tears as it had in the past. The ease of Caruso cadenzas in "La donna e Mobile" and "Una Furtiva Lagrima" put most tenors with a 1/4 of Caruso's vocal weight and size to shame.

There are no American/Swedish or any other hyphenated Carusos. He was unique and I am a Bjoerling freak. I find it
odd that a previous reviwer mentioned Mario Lanza favorably with Caruso.

Lanza rarely performed on an opera stage. On recording his voice seems large but his singing is amateurish. He squeezes, forces, barks and croons. At times one can hear a pretty sound but I do not consider him a major opera singer.

Rudolf Bing's comment that people who heard Richard Tucker were just as lucky as those who heard Caruso is silly. Tucker was excellent but NOT Caruso.

Lauritz Melchior, in the heavy German repetoire and to my mind Otello, is as unique and uncomparable as Caruso is in the Italian and French repetoire.

1 out of 5 stars WARNING-All Original Releases Corrode Because of Dye.......2005-04-24

EVERYONE who bought the ORIGINAL multi-disc release has seen each disc become unplayable through corrosion because of a dye used to print the label side. BMG is well aware of this and has been inundated with demands for replacement.

This set is available in a subsequently released BUDGET compilation, also available through AMAZON. There are no manufacturing defects.

      5 out of 5 stars from a 13 year old kid.......2005-03-15

it is a great cd. when they say complete, they mean complete! 12 cds about 70mins each. comes with booklet with recording dates and matrix #s. in cardboardy-leather box. i did not have a probelem with red batwing labels making a clear film. the set is from the 70's but is the quality that great any way? contains private recordings.

4 out of 5 stars There are other, better options.......2004-05-17

I was surprised to see that this set was still available. These transfers were made in the late 1970's at the dawn of the digital era and were state of the art for that time. But in cleaning up the surface noise these old digital transfers seriously flatten out the sound of Caruso's voice.

I would suggest that people interested in Caruso check out the "complete" Caruso series on Naxos with new digital restorations by the great sound engineer/artist Ward Marston. On the Naxos CD's the voice is preserved in a much more natural and subtle sound while all of the other noises are eliminated as much as possible. It's much more satisfying and true to the original recordings than these old RCA transfers. If you're going to spend $130.00 you should have the best available. It's only fair to Caruso.
