A wonderful journey.......2006-02-17

The guitar performance is as good as it gets. Every track could have been recorded as a solo performance and worked very well. The percussion and saxophone enrich the context and move the performance into something more than just music. After listening you feel like you've just enjoyed something wonderful and at the same time you've been educated without realizing it! After listening you understand something about Latin American music that you didn't before.

my introduction to the classical guitar technique.......2005-05-22

The Journey to the Amazon does just what the title suggests, taking you on an melodious adventure of guitar and local instruments and rhythms. This disc was my introduction to the sound of a classical guitar, and I found that the path Sharon Isbin took from more classical repertoire suited her style well. I may not have liked the sound of classical guitar at all if I had first listened to it in a more traditional genre.

Mesmerizing!!.......2004-02-29

This CD was my first exposure to Sharon Isbin, and I am absolutely mesmerized by it!! The music is beautiful, lyrical and moving. You can close your eyes and feel transported to a lovely other-worldly place full of graceful Latin/Brazilian rhythms.

Beyond beautiful, a wonderful work.......2003-09-08

This recording was one of my early exposures to Sharon Isbin on CD. I had the pleasure of experiencing her live performance prior to the purchase of this CD. As a fan of heavier guitar music, (i.e. Steve Vai and Eric Johnson), I never believed I would enjoy a classical guitarist. I was so completely moved by the performance Ms. Isbin gives on this CD, that I promptly purchased "Dreams of a World" and most recently "Baroque Favorites for Guitar". I highly recommend this CD if you want to hear a guitarist whose work defies traditional categorization. I give it 10 stars! Please try to see Ms. Isbin live in recital if she comes to your area; you will experience a remarkable performance.

I had the good fortune of hearing these performers live and relished every moment. Rarely does a CD live up to a live performance, but this is one that does and more. A must buy!!

A refreshing new look into Celtic music.......2007-01-18

From the first track you have no doubt that this IS Celtic music. When the lead vocalist, Rosa Cedron, sings in the second track, you realize that this group combines excellent players with a singer who has a rich voice, and a great command of the material. This is now one of my favorite Celtic albums. Sadly, Rosa Cedron left the group in the beginning of 2005.

Gallego music at its best.......2000-12-02

Listening to this CD will leave no doubt in ones mind that the Gallego people of Northwest Spain are Celtic in heritage, and more related to the Scots/Irish that the rest of Spain. A delight to listen to!

Perfect continuation of Plenilunio.......2000-07-11

I love this guys. They perform the galician music I love to listen. Cabo do Mundo is very similar to its predecessor, "Plenilunio", with 3 tracks lasting more than six minutes. It is not strictly traditional music, but traditional music with... The voice of Rosa Cedrón is sweet and fits perfectly with the sounds played by the gaitas and other instruments. As I told them by mail, an outstanding cd and a light to follow. Please, don't hesitate to buy it. And Plenilunio too.

Superaquello: Puerto Rican musical vanguards.......2005-06-03

Superaquello is most definitely the most refreshing and original Puerto Rican music group in the present (and probably the only Puerto Rican music group who is either refreshing or original). In the overwhelming shadow of the simplistic "reggaeton" (P.R. hip hop), Superaquello has been able to create a faithful and devoted underground following who prefer real and profound home grown talent and the pleasant sounds of real music and original lyrics, to the other horrible musical choices Puerto Rican music has to offer such as "reggaeton" , crappy Spanish pop, crappy reggae groups, worn out rock groups, and mediocre merengue and salsa groups. Mupsiquita is quite a simply a beautiful cd filled with incredibly catchy melodies and good instrumental arrangements. The synthesizers are superb, as are the guitars, but the real outstanding qualities Superaquello have are their unorthodox musical delivery and the beautiful sounds of Patricia Dávila's voice (not to mention Eduardo Alegría's voice also, which is good but not necessarily beautiful for my taste). Superaquello's sound is a refreshing mix of pop/electronic/rock/modern rock/theatrical/surrealist music all rolled into a fine burrito of pleasure. The best tracks (they are all good, I am refreshing to the most outstanding) in this cd are tracks 1, 4, 9, 11, 12, 13, 14 and the last one. The only bad thing I have to say is that they are broken off because of an apparent necessity of one of the members to leave the island or something like that, I'm really not sure. I think they broke off because the majority of the people don't know they exist and hence they are not achieving what they rightfully should and are overwhelmed by frustration. I just have to say I hope they get back together again and make once again th great music they do.

I will never get tired of listening to this CD ever.It is the best cd Fiel a la Vega has recorded so far. It is full of passion, great tunes and rythms, great lyrics and poetry. My favorite song is Necesario son los Sueños...it is amazing. This is a very mature work, very well thought out with a lot of hope and inspiration for everyone as well as things to think about. It breaks the physical barriers of the island itself as their message can apply to almost any country in Latin America (Listen to Hay Que Edificar). This CD presents a much more mature and developed train of thought in music and lyrics as they come together is such an awsame way. If you have liked Fiel a la Vega before, you have to have this cd. You won't regret it. Otherwise, you will be misssing out of a great work of art!

The lovely Brazilian soprano, Bidu Sayao, who was born in 1902 (and still with us), had a small, silvery, and very expressive voice. It was for her that Villa Lobos composed his famous Bachianas Brazilieras No. 5. On this CD we hear Sayao's first studio recordings, from the early 1930s, comprising some nice Portuguese songs and excerpts from an opera by Gomes (Il Guarany), which exhibit a smooth legato and a bright tone. The other (and more interesting selections) are taken from broadcasts made between l948 and l951. A lovely duet from L'elisir d'amore (with Italo Tajo), two poignant selections from Massenet's Manon and one from Puccini's, Mimi's tender farewell from La Bohème, and a couple of other pieces take a back seat to the 10-minute duet which closes Gounod's Romeo et Juliette. Here, Sayao is partnered by Jussi Bjoerling, and if you haven't heard it, you don't know what you're missing. In all, an important release. --Robert Levine

A Treasure in Earthen Vessel............2007-06-08

Madame Sayao lived a long lifetime, and made some truly wonderful music. Trained by the great Jean de Reszke, she possessed a well nigh perfect technique. Moreover, she knew when to quit. [We can all name some who didn't]. This album gives some of her early radio performances, as well as several later excerpts. The two cuts from "Romeo et Juliette" are, alone, worth the price. Jussi Bjoerling is the most wonderful Romeo on record. Here, he is at his peak. He was, alas, a drunk, with the social graces of a pig, and died at 49 of alcoholic cardiomyopathy.

Bidu, to my mind, was the Juliette, Manon, and Mimi for the ages; in this recording, we get to hear two of the three. She may have been the most beautiful Opera singer ever, but that is not the point here. Her recorded legacy is, alas, rather small. Grab this; grab all you can. I'm waiting for front row center tickets to hear Bidu in Heaven; [and Ponselle, Ruffo, Malibran, and others]. Till then, I'm thankful for such recordings as we have. Enjoy......

Sensational Sayao.......2006-02-27

The great Sayao is now heard in impressive recordings from the the early 1930s and radio broadcasts from 1948 to 1951. The early recordings reveal a higly flexible voice with great ease in coloratura and an expansive upper range. The pieces are by Brazilian composers. There are no selections from her early European operatic career --no Donizetti (Lucia) or Bellini or Rossini, Lakme, Zerbinetta, Melisande or Traviata. This is a real loss since her voice in the early years of her career was of a subtle unique beauty throughout the range ---again with perfect technique and a deeply moving esthetic and expressivenesss. The recordings from 1948-1951 reveal a great Juliette in the Waltz song -better than in the commercial release- also the magnificently vocalized duet with Jussi Bjorling--There is an enchanting duet from L'Elisir with Italo Tajo, a lovely Micaela's aria and beautifully rendered selections from Manon Lescaut, Manon and La Boheme -comparable to the released commerciel performances. The recital ends with an exquisite performance of The Last Rose of Summer. The material itself unfortunately does not reveal more of the great Sayao such as French art songs--she sang Debussy, Ravel and Poulenc and even early French and Italian selections including Pergolesi --That Sayao is not adequately represented on discs in definitive interpretations of the variety of music that she sang during her long career is a tragedy. She was one of the truly great singers of the first half of the 20th century and one of the great Mozartians--could you imagine an Exultate Jubilate. Well just be grateful for the three CDs that were released.

The great Bidu Sayao at the start and finish of her career.......1999-06-27

Rarities contains 8 gems from the early part of Sayao's career (early 1930's, pre-dating her Met debut) and 10 radio recordings from 1948 - 1951. The disc is the perfect compliment to the two HERITAGE recordings which are responsible for the renewed interest in Sayao. The disc is worth the price if only to hear the pairing with the great Jussi Bjoerling (Va! je t'ai pardonné from Gounod's Romeo et Juliette). The early recordings, which were made in her native Brazil, suffer from weak playing in the orchestra; but her youthful voice has a brilliance and ease in the high range unequaled in her later years. The sound quality is VERY grainy.

The radio recordings include excerpts from L'elixir d'amore (1, with Italo Tajo), Romeo et Juliette (2), Carmen (1), Manon (2), Manon Lescaut (1), La Bohème (1), L'Amico Fritz (1) and Martha (1). The sound quality hear is greatly improved and are all live recordings. Her "Last Rose of Summer" from Flotow's Martha is a study in beautiful simplicity. As always, Sayao's shading, dynamics and phrasing set (in my opinion) the highest standards in singing and musicianship.

Gaelic at its best.......2001-01-12

If anyone doubts that the Gallegos of Northwest Spain are of Celtic origin, they only need to listen to this music, as well as Cabo Do Mundo.

My Gallego father once told me that the oldest "Gaelic" town in the world was Lugo, Spain. After listening to the music of Luar Na Lubre, as well as other Celtic music from Galicia, such as the Chieftains and others, no doubt can exist!
