5 out of 5 stars Great job, but thank you, no........2007-01-16

Excellent performances and recording. It demonstrates beautifully how an 'Italian Tenor' works. If you are interested in this period, it's a definite keeper. I found too many of the cuts to be uninteresting, but that's the composers' doings; not the performers. Just not my 'cuppa tea' as far as many cuts go. Five stars on the performances and the recording.

5 out of 5 stars Jordi Savall NEVER FAILS to deliver!.......2006-05-01

This cd is no exception. After hearing track 10, Canarios, on public radio i immediately purchased the album. To my surprise each and ever cut is a jewel. Buy it ...let it take you to faraway sundrenched places filled with exotic perfume, spices, and the most beautiful sounds which will guarantee a spark of joy.... an artistic and gorgeous album!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, as usual.......2002-01-24

I have heard all of the Alia Vox releases and am hard pressed to recommend one over the other. "Ostinato" can proudly stand alongside the earlier releases; it's absolutely terrific with ingenious arrangements and more than exciting performances. My only complaint concerns Pachelbel's Kanon and Gigue. Perhaps I'm overly critical due to the overexposure this piece has been subjected in the last quarter century, but Savall and company take it at such a clip that it threatens (though doesn't quite succeed) in sapping it of its charm. Though I don't care for lethargic (read romantic) tempos where this piece is concerned, I also don't care for breakneck speeds in the guise of authenticity. However, this is too minor a complaint to even be taken into serious consideration. The recorded sound is ample and warm with just the right amount of reverberation to expand and not overwhelm these delightful miniatures.

    5 out of 5 stars A very special recording.......2006-05-21

Savall and Hesperion XXI often return to the same material, almost obsessively; yet this repertory - the interface of early Iberian art music and the traditional - sustains endless re-visiting and re-interpretation; there can never be one definitive interpretation of this endlessly rewarding music, as Renaissance and Baroque composers knew - producing as they did endless variations on traditional themes which had woven their way from the popular sphere to the realm of 'art' music. Some of these bass melodies are presented here - the 'Follia' and 'Canaries' -and it is wonderful that Savall has the artistic freedom to perform versions of these again and again on his own label, Alia Vox. The above disc was made with the French label Naive in the early nineties, and on the face of it, might appear to have been superseded by a number of discs made by Savall recently on Alia Vox - see titles such as 'Ostinato' from 2001 , 'La Folia 1490-1701', from 2000, and 'Altre Folie' from 2005, which has 're-takes' of some of the pieces on this disc, such as Mudarra's, and De Cabezon's. Yet I think this CD remains a very special disc, and I don't think Savall has necessarily improved on his interpretations as recorded here. Listen to the last piece on this CD, Savall's own improvisation for viol with violone on the Canarios ground melody; far terser, more grave and finally more interesting than his later rather rambling essay on the Canarios theme on the 'Ostinato' disc. The same applies to Arauxo's beautiful 'Todo el mundo' where Lorenz Duftschind's violone makes for an almost hypnotic bass part, more so than the organ used in the 'Ostinato' disc. In fact it is the eschewal on this CD of any keyboards or (especially) a percussion at times liable to irritate which make the viol consort-based peformances on this disc so pleasing - producing a clean, dark texture almost unique in Savall's recorded output.
The string-based pieces comprise transcriptions of 'high style' Fantasias for organ by Cabaniles (for me the highlight of the disc) and improvisations on melodies going back to the time of the Troubadors. These are alternated with solos for Lawrence-King's double harp and Lislevand's guitar and theorbo. In short this is a unique disc comprising performances which clearly have recieved a lot of thought before being commited to disc. It's one which, if you like this repertory, you'll want to return to again and again, and I hope too that Savall has not paid the last visit to this repertory - even several recordings later!

    5 out of 5 stars Beautiful music!.......2003-05-21

I have about ten Cds of the Hesperion groups music. This is my favorite. It has a richness and life that rivets me to the performance every time. By the time this disc is over, I am completely relaxed. I have played it for my non-classical loving friends, and they have also commented on what a great piece it is. The sonics are excellent too.

This "fiesta" is in honor of the Virgin, and contains music by Roque Jacinto de Chavarria, a Brazilian Baroque composer (1688-1719), Juan de Araujo (Chavarria's teacher) and others. Don't let their unfamiliarity and the unfamiliarity of the other composers/arrangers on this CD put you off--all the music is flavorful, solid, Baroque fare, and much of it is rhythmically propulsive with an exciting Latin beat. Musicologist Bernardo Illari has put it all together to create a thrilling, vastly entertaining, and unique experience. It winds ups as a veritable pageant, beginning with a drummed entry into the cathedral, followed by the polyphonic sections alternating with purely instrumental ones and some nice monophony as well. Needless to say, Garrido leads his large instrumental and vocal forces with verve and understanding. The CD comes with a DVD including an interview with Garrido and some rehearsal footage which should have been more gripping if they were to include it at all--but why look a gift-horse in the mouth? --Robert Levine

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Another highlight in Garrido's discography.......2005-06-09

Firstly, full agreement with the review immediately below.

The disc probably should perhaps have been entitled Chavarria - selected works, since this otherwise unknown native Bolivian composer (1688-1719) doesn't appear to ever have had a disc in his name yet dominates the tracklisting. Though one can understand Garrido wanting to celebrate an "event", a "context", rather than a single composer, along the lines that Paul McCreesh is perhaps best known for in his San Rocco, Venetian Coronation, recordings and so on. Garrido has of course done this kind of "context" disc before, as have other artists in the K617 label's Les Chemins du Baroque series.

Chavarria's boistrous Spanish settings consist of villancicos, salves, and a bullfight. They are complimented by Latin motets from Flores, Guzman, and anonymous. As usual in K617's full price releases (though not reissues) the documentation is superb - essays in French English and Spanish and original texts with French translations. Generous timing at 78'19. Plus the free DVD of course.

5 out of 5 stars Vividly atmospheric "Fiesta"!.......2005-05-07

This recording aims to recapture something of the exuberance of the musical celebrations surrounding the 'Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe', in La Plata (now Sucre) in early 18th century Bolivia [complete track listing given at the end of this review]. Much of the programme focuses on works by the talented (but hitherto largely neglected) Roque Jacinto de Chavarria (1688-1719); these are complemented with pieces by his [New-World] contemporaries, some better known (such as Juan de Araujo), others not. Listeners new to this repertory may be struck by the archaic style of some pieces, though they make sense in the context of contemporary Iberian music (in particular the villancicos of Juan Frances de Iribarren [1698-1767]). Other pieces, in contrast, are more typical of the Italian Baroque style, such as Chavarria's Salve regina 'Parajillos madrugad!' [track 13].

The performances by Ensemble Elyma (supplemented with the ensemble Ars Longa de La Havane and the Cor Vivaldi, Els Petits Cantors de Catalunya) are outstanding - indeed, I believe this is one of the finest recordings of New World Baroque music currently available. Most pieces are given a suitably colouristic interpretation - voices, strings [bowed and plucked], wind instruments [loud and soft] and occasionally percussion - as it seems was most probably the case in the original performances (interested readers should consult literature by Robert Stevenson and Steven Barwick etc). The programme also includes some fascinating dance-songs taken from the manuscripts of Don Baltasar Martinez Companon (a pioneering ethnomusicologist and also Bishop of Trujillo, 1779-89), which bear the hallmarks of music which can be heard to this day in South America. Whether such pieces would have been as orchestrated as they are here is perhaps a matter for conjecture, although it is impossible not to be carried away by the brilliance of Garrido's interpretations! [The original manuscripts are accompanied by Companon's own watercolour illustrations, which depict musicians - sometimes native Indians, sometimes Creoles or Africans - in small groups, playing a mixture of Western instruments (like harp and guitar) and traditional ones such as the quijada and the cajita].

The CD also includes a free DVD with extracts from a concert of this programme, and an interview with Gabriel Garrido. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Nuyorican salsa/hip-hop is da bomb!.......1998-06-14

Ultimately danceable, it is contemporary salsa done with the beat of the city. Merengue, hip hop, rap, you can really jump to the music. Highly recommended, many hot dance tracks.
