My intial response to this album was disappointment. With the exception of Zambra it lacks the emotional highs of her first American release (the songs and poem album). I paid attention though and recognized a great deal of emotions which are far more complicated. All that is vague, but I had to say something.

You may have seen Penelope Cruz lip sync in Volver and wondered where that incredible voice came from - strong and passionate, yet emotional and vulnerable. Meet Estrella Morente, from Granada, Spain (her name means "star"). "Mujeres" is her second album, after "Mi cante y un poema," and it's a knockout.

This album is laden with beautiful songs borrowed from other artists and given a flamenco twist. A few standouts are "Tangos de Grana," "Zambra," "La noche de mi amor," and "Nana." And let's not forget "Volver." Estrella's voice is from another world. "Mi cante y un poema" was good, but her voice has matured a bit and comes across even stronger on "Mujeres." I've exposed many of my friends to Estrella Morente and given the album to several. Some aren't in love with flamenco, but even they recognize that she's a force of nature.

If you're debating whether or not to give Estrella a shot, get on youtube right now - check her out in the video for "Zambra" and I promise you, you'll be a fan too!

What is to say about a SINGER/ARTIST with so much talent and fire like Estrella Morente! I dare to say that after Carmen Linares, Estrella is the perfect expression of the Song called Flamenco! Her voice expresses deeply el cante Jondo(flamenco). Gentle yet strong voice, she makes you feel and yearn for more. You feel both her pain and love in every note that comes out of that beautiful mouth. Estrellita de mi corazon, never stop singing for that would be a crime, jamais pares de cantar porque seria un crimen! Viva Estrella!

Hijole, This CD has got 2 be one of the most beutiful Mariachi CD's out there. I bought it as a gift 4 my dad, but am about to buy another one for me! I just fell in love with "Por Mujeres Como Tu", "Directo al Corazon" and "Me esta llorando el Corazon" I sing these songs everywhere and at everytime. Una excelente coleccion de canciones fue mi primera impresion, basado en eso lo compre.
De las canciones la mayoria son para el olvido, cantadas sin pasion y sin lustre. Una lastima ya que las artistas son excelentes pero no siento que tuvieran un compromiso total con el disco

Hay que reconocer algunas que salvan el disco, con pasion y haciendo las canciones suyas

Pasion Vega, con un piano precioso y una voz desgarradora

Excelente Homenaje.......2004-01-23

Joaquín Sabina es, sin lugar a dudas, uno de los mejores compositores en español de la actualidad. En este homenaje se recoge una mezcla de canciones que en su mayoría evocan un sentimiento precioso, y que Joaquín Sabina describe con maestría y gracia inigualable: el amor. Estoy seguro que todas las personas que escuchen y aprecien este homenaje llegarán a sentirse identificadas con cada una de las canciones, y sentirán el contenido de las letras como experiencias que están viviendo o han vivido. En ese punto es donde Joaquín Sabina hace un mágico "click" con su público. A mi parecer son las canciones de Sabina que llegan más al alma, y ahora están enriquecidas con la voz tierna y pasionaria de mujeres amigas de Joaquín Sabina. A mi juicio sólo faltó una canción "19 días y 500 noches" pero bueno, la perfección es un proceso inagotable... A disfrutarlo.

A better title would be "The softer side of brass".......2001-03-15

There is much more "soft" (e.g. melancholic, romantic, whimsical) brass here than just romantic brass. I purchased this after an exhaustive search for CD with a rendition of Rodrigo's Concierto Con Aranjuez featuring a solo trumpet which was NOT surrounded a bunch of loud, Sousa-like brass pieces. The Rodrigo piece is good, but overall I prefer the rendition on the Brassed Off! soundtrack. The performances are adept and often inspired but the solo trumpet is often more technical than emotionaly fulfilling. In general this album is a bit schizophrenic. Several pieces (e.g. Albeniz' "Sevilla", Ravel's "Vasles nobles et sentimetnales"),are highly spirited and only "romantic" by the farthest stretch of the imagination but a few (e.g. Falla's " Miller's Dance") are restrained in their exubernace and the majority are quite soothing and worthwhile. I am particularly fond of Debussy's "Des Pas sur la Neige" and Granados "Oriental from Danzas Espanoles".
