Apparently, if you ask Elton John to provide songs for the soundtrack to your movie, you'll get more than you bargained for. In this case, much more. Only 5 of the 11 tracks are used in this animated film about 2 swindlers searching for gold in 16th-century Spain, meaning 6 bonus cuts are featured here. John again collaborated with lyricist Tim Rice, who worked on last year's Aida and 1994's Lion King. There are the trademark piano ballads ("Friends Never Say Goodbye," "Queen of Cities") and uptempo piano rockers ("16th Century Man"), but many of the tracks feature island rhythms and some unusually futuristic effects ("Trust Me"). One particular highlight is a humorous duet with Randy Newman on "It's Tough to Be a God." Three additional cuts from the movie's score by Hans Zimmer and John Powell finish the album with cinematic flair. --Rob O'ConnorCustomer Reviews:
Another Great Album By Elton........2007-01-15
Elton John Provides more Music Inspired by the Movie.......2006-12-29
The first eleven tracks are songs sung by Elton John, with one a duet with Randy Newman. The first track, "El Dorado," is a nice song that is fortunately toned down from the movie version. I thought the film version was too powerful at its peak, which is great when you are in a theater with big speakers and trying to get people's adrenaline flowing, but with the overall tenor of this album a less powerful version is appropriate. My only complaint is the endless repeats of "El Dorado" at the end of the song.
The second song is one of the standout songs from this movie. "Someday Out of the Blue" is one in a series of love songs that Elton John has sung over the decades that always impress me with their power and quality. The hooks are catchy and Elton's voice is well-matched with Tim Rice's lyrics. The track "Without Question" is another wonderful love song. I particularly enjoy the synthesizer touches and the orchestration. These two songs, both of which were included in the movie, could readily be part of another "Love Songs" collection by Elton John.
I like the song "Friends Never Say Goodbye" a lot. The music is poignant and wistful. Elton puts a lot of emotion into this music that distinguishes this song. The backing vocals and refrain on this song are also very well done.
"The Trail We Blaze" is an average song until the backing vocals kick in, and then the song improves. There are six people listed as backing vocalists. Two of the six are Davey Johnstone and Nigel Olsson; these two gentlemen provided some of the marvelous backing vocals on the album "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" and the backing vocals here remind me of that album. I much prefer these backing vocals to the backing vocals in the movie.
The song "16th Century Man" is the first song on this CD that did not appear in the movie. This song is the fastest song on this CD. The music is reasonably good. However, the lyrics are cartoonish and silly. This song seems a little out of place on this CD.
The next song was another song that did not appear in the movie. "The Panic in Me" is beautiful. I consider this mellow song one of the best on this CD. Fans of Elton John will want this CD just for this song. The instrument arrangement on this song is outstanding. This song easily could have been nominated for a Grammy Award of some kind.
The song "It's Tough to Be a God" is a different version from that which appeared in the movie. In the case of this song, I did prefer the movie version. I enjoy Randy Newman's duet, but I enjoyed the movie version more. Both versions are enjoyable and an even better option would have been to have both. There is room on the CD to have included both versions.
The remaining three songs on this CD, "Trust Me," "My Heart Dances," and "Queen of Cities," did not appear in the movie. All three songs are excellent additions to this CD. "Trust Me" is a faster song with excellent string backing and interesting synthesizer effects. This song is very well done and yet another reason to have this CD. "My Heart Dances" is a lovely song that is less inspired than "Trust Me" and "The Panic in Me," but is still enjoyable. The nylon string guitar in this song is standout and puts an interesting twist on this song. "Queen of Cities" suffers from being the last song in a string of very good songs. The lyrics are weak and the music is ordinary. This song is my least favorite on this CD. I think I would have preferred this song as an instrumental.
The album finishes with three instrumental tracks. "Cheldorado" and "The Brig" were composed by Hans Zimmer. "Wonders of the New World" was composed by John Powell. "Cheldorado" is a lovely instrumental featuring an acoustic guitar that follows a Spanish theme. There are places where the orchestra repeats the theme too often. The best part of the instrumental is in the last minute, where the theme changes and provides an enjoyable tempo contrast. This instrumental and the following instrumental have Spanish elements in keeping with the theme of the movie. "The Brig" relies heavily on a well played acoustic guitar. My only objection is that the guitar seems somewhat muffled as though the higher frequencies were chopped. I still like the instrumental but wonder why it was mixed the way it was. As with the previous instrumental, the closing minute of the track has an enjoyable change in tempo and theme that makes the song interesting to hear to the very end.
The final instrumental seems to owe some inspiration to Ravel. The pace of the music is faster than the previous instrumentals. This song relies on amplitude to make its point, and fortunately the power supports the nicely craft music.
This album is much more than a soundtrack. It contains well-craft Elton John music (though some was written in collaboration) supporting Tim Rice lyrics. Several of the songs are excellent songs even by Elton John's historically high standards. This album is a must-have for Elton John fans, and exceeds even "The Big Picture" in terms of quality.
Enjoy!

This album is not quite classic Elton John , but it is a good record, and I like playing it now and again. 4 stars.

Having earned his composing stripes after the 1960s, John Adams had the pioneering work of Steve Reich, Philip Glass, and Terry Riley close at hand as he ventured into his trade. And, while minimalism's historical continuum helps place Adams, he used Reich, Glass, and Riley (among others) only as a starting point. And here's proof: a 10-CD retrospective of nearly all Adams's recorded compositions on Nonesuch Records, the label that also issued Steve Reich 1965-1995 and Kronos Quartet: 25 Years. Adams's Harmonium, a choral work of startling energy and effervescence, appears here in a new recording, as do distillations of both The Death of Klinghoffer and Nixon in China, two path-clearing operas. Over the span of a career covered by Earbox, Adams has returned minimalism to traditional instrumental ensembles as well as to projects that at once advanced a political commentary and took that commentary back to orchestral audiences. And so, in far less time than his predecessors, Adams created works that now play like standard repertoire pieces: The Wound Dresser and Shaker Loops and the Violin Concerto--all of them are here. What these works demonstrate is a fierce creativity on the one hand and perhaps a hunger for commercial advances on the other. Adams may at times be a bustling free thinker, but he sounds ever conscious of what audiences are listening to. As for the works themselves, they remain every bit as daunting as when written. Some may object to particular selections. I Was Looking at the Ceiling and Then I Saw the Sky, for example, hardly ranks with Adams's best work. But this box isn't a mere best-of; it's an almost-all-of. At times terrifically American--especially in the news-aware operas and their narrative pragmatism--Adams well deserves a major box set, and its coverage is appropriate to his varied, stylistically diverse output. As with any large-scale retrospective, Earbox--which fairly bristles with Adams's new composition, Slonimsky's Earbox--has spots where fans might balk at the quality of the composer's writing. But it's got a fantastic accompanying booklet along with its many hours of inarguably modern and thoroughly listener-friendly music. --Andrew Bartlett

harmonia in excelsis.......2001-11-12
Interesting, and likely intentional, is that two names in the extensive liner book fail to mention two great and glaringly obvious precursors: Carl Orff and Raymond Scott. Without "Carmina Burana," there would be no "Harmonium." Orff has his mark all over Adams's gifted and epic compositions. Similarly, though there are glib references to "cartoon music," the polymath engineer/musician Scott is a seminal figure in American music, and casts a large shadow over the witty juxtapositions and sense of play one loves in Adams's work. In all, an excellent career overview.
Our greatest living composer.......2001-07-22
That anyone can use the words "spoiled, overrated" amazes me. I emphatically disagree with "A music fan"'s review.
I don't think it's "mind-numbing"; I think it's spiritual and exciting. To me it's the most substantial music being created in our times.
I'm really sorry that anyone could fail to enjoy it, and really recommend others to listen for themselves.

Movie Soundtrack?.......2006-12-08
A new style takes form on here........2004-11-25
Amazon Waltz is a jazzy song with Brazilian wind instruments and percussion plus some chants as well. Nepalese Tango is similar to the previous one but not quite as fast and has some worldly bells and drums. I could play this one when driving through the jungle with mountains nearby on a misty day. Black Delilah is a unique track that incorporates stunning cello performances as well as a violin to create a masterwork. Chattahoochie Field day is a very daytime song with bouncy rhythms and a very jazzy vibe to it. The Illuminator is a very electronic song with beautiful synths and some plucky instruments. At the middle of the song the synths sounds very much like the pluck instruments from Enyas Orinoco Flow. This is my favorite song. One Eyed Jacks is another typical jazzy O'Hearn song but still great. Hear Our Prayer is a song with Middle Eastern drums and chants. Delicate is a dark track with the trademark synthesizers but has beautiful haunting chants. The title track is a very intense with thundering rain sound effects and bells. One standout track in this album. There's Always Tomorrow is a somber yet happy track at the same track. It's a nice jazzy closer to this album.
This is probably Mr. O'Hearns last daytime sounding album. This album is a definate masterpiece. It's totally different from the dark, chilling, frightning masterwork Indigo and all latter material that would follow. Definate buy this one.

Amazon.com essential recording
John Adams's El Dorado is in some ways program music, with a twist. It's an imaginary accompaniment, he writes in the liner essay, to a diptych with the unmolested nature of the New World in one panel and that same world with man in it in the other panel. Certainly Adams's characterization of the piece's drama is apt, as it indeed bursts with fierceness at exactly the point where man comes to believe in dominating and subjugating nature, where any hint of the romantic tradition crashes headlong into a more radical revision of both minimalism and percussion-charged late-20th-century orchestration. The piece is aimed at the same subject occupying so many composers in 1992, the collision of worlds 500 years earlier in the Americas. Adams follows this big, broad-shouldered work with an orchestration of Franz Liszt's La Lugubre Gondola and a reduced arrangement of Ferruccio Busoni's Berceuse Élégiaque. Both are funereal works, elegiac in their temperament and brimming with a dramatic depth that compliments El Dorado's rises and crashing falls beautifully. --Andrew BartlettCustomer Reviews:

They're Back (Kinda).......2001-10-28
All of those elements are present on "The El Dorado L.P" and, as such, if you were a fan of the last album this one is at least worthy of giving a listen. Songs like "Every Line Has Let You Inside of Me" and "The Battle of Vernon" are noisy little pop masterpieces. "Let Your Boy Come Back" is breezy horn and guitars pop that is not unlike what you you would expect from fellow west coasters Belulah (although lacking in anything resembling the irony and sarcasm of that band.) "You Can't Deny a Broken Heart is just great pop, a charming pastiche of Swervedriver and Merseybeat.
Sadly though there are problems for the Foundation on this outing. For one, Wayne Everett's singing is a lot more self-concious and precious on this album. Lyrics were never a strong point for this band (most of the singing on "Pacifico" is virtually unintelligble) so hearing Everett sing a line like "Calling out across the room / Can you take the brand new beat?" as if it were anything but cheesy is embarrassing to listen to.
Also, some of these songs get annoying really fast. "Powersurge" is just a really bad rewrite of Devo's "Whip It". Even the cool instrumental noise break in the song fails to save it from its sins. The infantile vocals on "Hero" upon hearing once become "endurance listening" after that.
Still one can not hope for anything but the best for this band. They have produced a lot of great music that has gone largely unheard in the indie circles and have faced a lot of resistance for their involvement in the Christian-Rock scene from the mega-hip. (Even I have been guilty of this I must confess and I am not even hip!) Currently the individual members are involved in new bands and projects and the future of Lassie Foundation is questionable at best. I am sure one way or the other we will hear more from them again.
