DG has put together a fascinating compilation of Segovia's art that reminds us what a protean figure he was. Segovia single-handedly put the instrument on the map by making classical guitar concerts popular events, broadening the instrument's repertory through commissions and transcriptions, and convincing even doubters that it could be a vehicle for serious music. He's heard here in brief pieces recorded between 1952 and 1969. Even in those made when he was well into his 70s, his fingers remain nimble and interpretations lively. Listening straight through, one hears many all-time Segovia favorites as Turina's Sevillana and Albeniz's Asturias and Zambra Granadina and renews appreciation for path-breaking composers like Castelnuovo-Tedesco. He wrote extensively for Segovia and his Capriccio diabolico and Tonadilla are pieces of real substance. Disc two is largely made up transcriptions and it's amazing how well so many of them work on the guitar, at least under Segovia's magic fingers. Thus the transformations of Bach's violin music and even a Chopin Prelude sound idiomatic, and the gorgeous melodies of the Canzonetta from Mendelssohn's Op. 12 String Quartet are irresistible here. An entrancing set. --Dan Davis

5 out of 5 stars A Man and His Art - Magnificently Captured.......2007-04-06

This 2-CD set produced by Deutche Grammmophon and first released in 2002 is one set of the hundreds that could have been or the dozens that actually have been made and sold successfully all over the world. The exceptional feature of this particular collection is not, of course, the performer. Quite to the contrary, the miraculous consistency of stylings and performance are amongst the most remarkable aspects of the man who was, arguably, the 20th Centry's virtuoso supreme of the classical guitar, Andres Segovia (1893-1987.) Rather, it is the collection itself - the pieces chosen to be produced on this one set - this, to steal a German word, gestalt. While his style did not remain constant throughout his long life and career, by the time he had developed his most masterful skills that included doing his own arrangements - the era represented on this particular set (1951-1960) - his playing had become completely his own - unchallenged and unmatched by even other clearly great guitarists with whom he shared this era.

There are a total of 31 pieces played on these CDs and while a playlist would be an unnecessary use of space here, a list of the composers represented is not. More than the specific pieces Segovia gives us here, the range of composers chosen by the compilers and editors - with each piece rearranged by Segovia himself, tells us a great deal about his interests, talents and musical range. These composers include:
Isaac Albeniz, Johann Sebastian Bach, Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Frederic Chopin, Claude Debussy, John Dowland, Manuel de Falla, Cesar Franke, Girolamo Frescobaldi, Edvard Grieg, George Frederic Handel, Felix Mendelsohn, Frederico Moreno Torroba, Modest Mussorgsky, Nicolo Paganini, Felipe Pedrell, Manuel Ponce, Jean-Philippe Rameau, Joaquin Rodrigo, Albert Roussel, Domenico Scarlatti, Alexander Scriabin, Segovia's own composition of Estudio sin luz, Fernando Sor, Francisco Tarrega, Joaquin Turina and Heitor Villa-Lobos. A truly magnificent and broad ranging collection held together by Segovia's unique personal style, approach and sound.

Largely self-taught, Andres Segovia did things with a guitar that others only imagined. He didn't just play Bach, for example - music written for an entirely different type of instrument (keyboards.) He went a step further, and recorder Bach's keyboard lessons written for his students (the Two and Three Part Inventions) and made them sound as if they had been written for the guitar! His artistry is evident to even the casual listener and in this collection, any devote of classical guitar and/or of Segovia as an individual artist, will not be disappointed.
Perfect listening for anytime. Hypnotic and, simply, unsurpassed. A necessary addition to any serious classical guitar collection.

EVERYBODY KNOWS THAT ANDRES SEGOVIA WAS/IS THE WORLD'S GREATEST CLASSICAL GUITAR PLAYER. THIS CD IS A COMPILATION OF HIS RECORDINGS FROM THE THE EARLY 50'S TO THE LATE 60'S. 5 out of 5 stars Awesome guitar work.......2007-01-12

Parkening sets the standard for others to compare to. Enjoyable tribute to Segovia. The type of guitar mastery that one can relax to after a hard days work. Enough said.

5 out of 5 stars Have been loving this for over ten years!!.......2003-09-26

I bought this cassette over ten years ago (1992) when I started taking classical guitar lessons. Would listen to it on the way home from work, then had a baby nine years ago and have used it for lullaby music (works like a charm) for afternoon naps and nighttime. Still listen to it in the car when the kids fight and they mellow out instantly.

Finally buying it on CD because I think I wore a spot out on the cassette! I have listened to this masterpiece at least a thousand times and have never, ever tired of this most excellent work of art.

If you are a classical guitar fan, you will absolutely adore every single note played on this album/CD. I promise!! :)

5 out of 5 stars sonic rapture..........2003-06-03

If anyone knows of a better sonically intoxicating cd than this please let me know. Possibly only Julian Bream's unreal 1982 Granados and Albeniz cd would top this one for me. Anyway just thought I would pass this thought along to anyone who may visit here. The tone is absolutely magical on this cd. This is the cd to listen to at night to chill out and get mellow while being enchanted to the max. Peace. I must go on... the tone, the tone. My god the tone.

5 out of 5 stars Not just a tribute.......2001-07-31

Parkening shows how much he learned from Segovia. I have many of these pieces played by the Master. Parkening plays with a similar timbre, simlar dynamics and with a musicality just as deep as Segovia's. IF you like classical guitar you should own this one.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful, relaxing music.......2001-01-27

This cd will spend much time on my player. It is so lively, yet comforting music to listen to.

Parkening provides wonderful tribute to Segovia with Spanish compositions especially loved by the master, even some of them performed on one his Segovia's guitars.

For the classical guitar enthusiast, or just someone looking for that refreshing guitar music we here on the FM, this is a fine selection.

These japanese people are awesome!! I had listened to many of their songs in the past, but when I heard "Mambo De La Luz" today, I couldn't believe it was them. That mambo is terriiiiiiiiific!!!! You simply cannot believe they are not 'latinos'! Increíble!!!

GREAT CD YES I RECOMENT THIS ALBUM

5 out of 5 stars Creative, interesting.......2003-11-11

This salsa CD is extremely well done and has just enough creativity to make it stand out...The Spanish pronunciation of these non-Spanish speakers (who learned to sing the songs phonetically) is virtually flawless and one would never guess that they cannot actually speak Spanish. Great CD(...)

4 out of 5 stars Unbelievable! Japan is now a Caribbean country!.......1999-07-13

If you thought Latin music was a Latino-only trade secret, think again! These Japanese cook up a salsa better than some Latinos themselves! This album has beautiful brass, great arrangements, and a solid Latin feel that can only be produced by masters of the music, even if they are not Latino! Highly recommended for salsa lovers!

These 65 minutes of solo guitar playing--handsomely, intimately recorded--are a pleasure to listen to. Russell is a true virtuoso, playing with an ease and assurance which gives the recital the great subtle, variety it should have. He's equally at home with the catchy, playful "Zapateado" by De La Maza that opens the program as he is with Llobet's lyrical, singable, relaxed "El testament d'Amelia." The beautiful, lullaby-like "La filla del Marxant" (also by Llobet) is as smooth as silk, and the four pieces by Andres Segovia have a flavor all their own. The downright odd, but alluringly discordant "El Abejorro" by Pujol will enchant and puzzle you. The program is songlike, dancelike, familiar and new-sounding, and Russell's graceful way with each style is ideal. Every note, every delicate harmonic, is audible and important, but there's never a sense of underlining either a melodic or rhythmic phrase. Russsell lets the music, diverse and fascinating, speak for itself. A must for those who love the classical guitar, especially with a Spanish flavor. --Robert Levine

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars The Maestro.......2005-07-25

Segovia was and always will be The Maestro. He was, as other reviewers say, the pioneer of modern classical guitar. To say that he has been somehow surpassed and passed by, as one previous reviewer seems to think is pure rubbish. To say that others have followed in his footsteps and become greats as well, is fact.

Music is always open to interpretation. Segovia was a great player and to understand the history of the classical guitar one must have listened to Segovia. He created the yardstick by which others are now measured.

This set not only includes great works played by the Maestro, it also includes Segovia speaking of his own life with the guitar. It is worth having along with other, more modern, gifted players such as Williams, Bream, Parkening and others who followed in the Maestro's footsteps.

5 out of 5 stars Has anyone ever created melodies like this from a guitar?.......2003-07-21

Okay, my classical experience is highly limited, having been raised on a healthy diet of Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and other blazing rock guitarists. But that doesn't mean I can't recognize a powerful guitarist when I see it, and Andres Segovia is just that. Sure you'll find your share of faster, more energetic playing, but you won't find any guitarist (Robert Johnson probably. George Harrison, maybe) in blues or rock that plays with as much melody, texture, and sheer, tear-jerking, beauty. And even if you have, guess what? They weren't the first to do it, and they weren't doing as far back as the 1920s. (Kicking it until the grand old age of 104) He is one of the first truly great guitarists, a virtuoso long before Satriani and Vai, playing classical on guitar long before anyone else, and playing it better then anyone else. This is him, completely solo and absolutely out of this universe in his playing. If you want to play guitar like the greats, then you can't go another day without this in your collection, deserving of a spot on your wall with Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Robert Johnson, and all the imitators that followed him!

5 out of 5 stars The Anton Rubinstein of Guitarist.......2003-06-15

Musically, it's not just guitar music that he is offering: note the exquisite emotion patterns, the languor and the nostalgia and his sighs...it's most soothing and consolating.

Technically, the subtleties and the phenomenon could partly be attributed to his insistence on the use of the fleshy part, instead of the hard part of his thumb. Like Arrau and Horszowski on the piano or Menuhin on the violin: they always stuck to the hardest way aiming at the best result.

The remastered sound is wonderful. I'm not particularly keen about the narrative part though.

      5 out of 5 stars I AGREE.......2003-02-21

Segovia was the greatest classical guitarist that ever lived and always WILL be the greatest that ever lived, for he was the ROCK on which the classical guitar was practically founded! These 3 CD's of his most treasured pieces cut straight through the heart with GREAT brilliance and virtuosity- Words cannot express his mastery of the instrument. I especially liked the autobiography on the fourth CD- VERY thrilling to hear the maestro's voice- In Spanish AND in English. This is a MUST HAVE for the serious classical guitarist-

2 out of 5 stars this once was a great recording........2002-11-10

I totally agree with the fact that every classical guitarist
owes great respect to Segovia, but the reason I gave this recording such a low rating is a simple matter of evolution. Unlike instruments like the violin, the classical guitar as we know it today is a very young instrument (+-1 century). It also didn't get the recognition it deserved untill segovia came along. From that moment on, the classical guitar's popularity increased immensely, actually it is still growing. As a logical result of this growing popularity, the quality of the technique improved and interpretations were refined.
Though Segovia was incredible guitarist in his time and situation (he was the ONLY international preformer that played this instrument), it would just be irrational to claim that the dozens of great preformers later on never improved compared to segovia. It's like denying that einstein's theories are more accurate than those of Isaac Newton, because Newton was the rock on wich fysics were mostly build.

These recordings are interesting for those who would like to do some historical research on the classical guitar, but for those who just want to listen to a good preformance, I would really recommend the more recent recordings (Russel, Fisk, Sollscher,...).

      Product Description

On her musical debut album, "Brujalicious", longtime La Bruja fans will embrace the infectious settings of her trademark lyrical skills in "Keep it Movin Like", "Nuyorico", and a hip-hop-flavored reggaeton cover of Madonna's "La Isla Bonita" and her fresh yet reverent treatment of traditional Puerto Rican bomba y plena and salsa in "Boricua, Boricua" and "Brujeria". But anyone who knows anything about La Bruja knows she never fails to surprise. She comes through again, revealing a husky, soulful alto in the album's musical refrains, and pushing boundaries with her catchy-as-it-is-sexy reggaeton "Mi Gatita Negra" and the steamy ballad "My Heart Go".

I saw La Bruja at her one-woman show years ago and was impressed. When I found out that she'd made this CD, I knew I had to buy it. I was hoping that it would convey her presence, which is powerful, mesmerizing and hot! This is just that. The CD starts out strong, with "Fuego and Mi Gatita Negra" and keeps going. It's long, but worth it! I just wish she'd get more female MCs on her projects. There was 1 on Brujalicious. She is a one-woman show though- great voice, good rhymes, and fierce messages, so maybe she doesn't need any female competition. This is it! My new favorite CD.

5 out of 5 stars Tango at its best.......2001-01-26

Sexteto Mayor has moved the old tango to today's music values, without loosing the essence of the tango, the 2x4 rythm. It combines then two things, highly professionally executed music with the virtues of the Argentine tango. A perfect combination. Even if you are not a tango fan, you should not miss this one. This CDs reflects a performance that has today over 500 presentations around the globe, from China to Albulquerque, from Turkey to San Diego, and has performed in the best theatres and music center around the world. Do not miss it.

      4 out of 5 stars Mixed emotions.......2000-07-20

I admit it, when it comes to tango, I tend to be a purist. Therefore, I still have a hard time accepting many of the latest "fusion" trends such as certain songs found in this CD which are not real tangos [e.g. "Ojos negros" a traditional Russian song, played in a tango tune] as well as the "bilingual" versions of some traditional tangos (sung with a pathetic accent, reminiscent of the early days of Julio Iglesias, I might add!)] The orchestra however, sounds wonderful, exceptionally balanced and very assertive.

5 out of 5 stars Impressive collection. A MUST have........1999-10-31

Sexteto Mayor has been known for years in Argentina as being some of the best in tango interpreting and playing. This production meets all expections. This is Argentinian Tango at its best. Great examples were chosen for this CD, I buy it often to give to friends that want to know about my Argentinian origins.

      5 out of 5 stars Fabulous!.......1999-06-04

Sexteto Mayor is a MUST HAVE in every tango lover's collection. This is authentic Argentinian tango at its best!

        4 out of 5 stars Reconsidering Nono.......2002-07-30

I have of course known of Luigi Nono for most of my life. His music was discussed in every book on twentieth century music to be written since the 60's. And yet I'm ashamed to say that I had never heard anything by Nono until I bought this CD recently. I didn't know what I'd been missing. Nono is far from a dessicated total serialist. Rather his music is passionate and revolutionary. And perhaps even a bit spiritual...though probably it's a Marxist spirituality.

como una ola de fuerza y luz is the monumental work on this disc. Scored for orchestra, tape and soprano soloist, the work is a sonic tour de force. It was written to morn the death of Luciano Cruz, a Chilean revolutionary whom Nono had befriended. The sonic world of the piece is based on recurrent low clusters in the orchestra, and a musique concrete tape based on distorted piano and human voices. The work is tragic and haunting.

The other works on this CD are from the 1950's, when Nono was first making his reputation. They are settings of Neruda and Lorca and meant as an epitaph to Lorca, murdered by Franco's followers during the Spainish Civil War. The works are uncompromising, and yet there is a profound lyricism in the music. This becomes most evident at the end of the Third Epitaffio as the music becomes a straightforward tonal version of a Spanish Civil War anthemn. The effect is very moving.

Performances are exemplary on this CD. Ursula Reinhardt-Kiss sings the monumentally difficult lines of como with real precision. And Roswitha Trexler and Werner Haseleu do a wonderful job on the equally difficult lines of the Epitaffio.

This CD has whetted my appetite for more music of this wonderful composer. He is vastly underrated.

5 out of 5 stars like a wave of strength and light!.......2001-07-12

"como una ola de fuerza y luz" was written in 1971/1972 to commemorate the Chilean revolutionary, Luciano Cruz, of the MIR (Revolutionary Leftist Movement). This 30-minute piece, recorded in 1976 in Leipzig, is for soprano, piano and orchestra, accompanied by a tape recording of transformed piano sounds and human voices. The electronics are therefore simple, but powerfully effective, used at the end to evoke the continuing presence of the revolutionary spirit, and the utopian prospect. As noted, "como una ola" marked a transition toward Nono's more contemplative late (1980s) style. The two shorter works included here (written in 1952/3, recorded in 1977) are less innovative musically, but form a thematic whole, as they commemorate the (losing) democratic forces of the Spanish Civil War (set to verse from Garcia-Lorca and Neruda). From the dictators Franco and Pinochet, to such current anti-democratic forces as the World Trade Organization, the struggle continues...

4 out of 5 stars Disc shows transition between Nono's early and late styles........1998-12-22

Memento (Epitafio No.3) is a good example of Nono's early style, based on Schoenberg's Variations for Orchestra, with shouting chorus and a political text. Como una etc., composed in 1972, is rooted in this kind of music but also shows the transition into late Nono, full of erie, static sound, a sort of white on white effect. Dedicated to Luciano Cruz, a Chilean revolutionary and martyr, the work's title means "Like a wave of strength and light." Nono's musical interpretation of strength here consists in rumbling percussion and a piano smoldering away in its lower registers, while light becomes the electronically produced "space music" which the more violent music periodically gives way to, as if to a vision of another, more spiritual realm. Como una ola de fuerza y luz is certainly one of Nono's most powerful works, and may be one of the masterpieces of the century.

5 out of 5 stars Great music by a throughly neglected composer.......1998-12-21

Frank Zappa once said that one of his band members wanted to turn your teen aged ears around. He must have had music like this in mind. Luigi Nono's music thoroughly engages the ear and mind in ways that the rock modernist could only hope for. His setting of texts by Lorca and Neruda are stunning and the performances on this disc are a revelation. Even in the short and simple third movement of the Epitafio #1 the poem and its setting create an entire world that would take Borges fifteen pages to suggest.
