Hendrick's been in love with Brazilian Music (especially Jazz) for a long time, and this is another great CD of his.
Very uplifting, very tight and with another great cast of guests to make this album a very good one.
They are:
- Jay Ashby on Trombone and Percussions
- Mark Soskin on Piano
- Portinho on Drums
- Claudio Roditi on Trumpet, etc. etc.

My favorite cuts are:
"Meet you After Dark", "Speak Low", "Prague in March",
"The Monster and the Flower" a composition of his and Ricardo Silveira, "Madison Square" and a classic from Coltrane "Moment's Notice".

If you like Brazilian Jazz and love harmonica; pick this CD and you'll forever be greatful you did.

        I got this cd after hearing the track Triste on NPR one night, and Ill admit that it could possibly be one of my favorite jazz tracks of all time.This cd gets more spins than any other jazz cd I have in my collection of over 30 cd's. I think this cd is the epicenter of Claudio's work.I have all the rest of his cds and I think this is the most solidly inspiring cd and extremely tight musicianship he has or anyone else has to offer for that matter. The collection of players he has assembled from different sessions just absolutely hit on all cylinders on every track of this cd.I think he is such an underrated trumpet player, due to the fact he doesnt go the virtuoso route and try to remain the main focus of the music, he plays off the the other musicians and they play off him and it works amazingly well on here.This cd should be played in the finest dinner clubs in the world,period.

        Hilton Ruiz is a talented pianist with a wealth of experience in both the Latin and mainstream jazz idioms. He's also adept at synthesizing the two and has frequently spiced his Latin-based recordings with such adventurous jazz players as Don Cherry and Sam Rivers. On this date he leads a nine-member group that includes four percussionists who generate complex polyrhythms and tremendous musical heat with a battery of assorted drums and bells. A strongly idiomatic front line of trumpeter Charlie Sepulveda, trombonist Papo Vasquez, and the celebrated young tenor saxophonist David Sanchez cooks over the underlying fire, but it's Ruiz himself who stands out with his rhythmic inventiveness. The group even manages to bring another dimension to John Coltrane's "Impressions." --Stuart Broomer

        This CD pulses with energy! Ruiz incorporates traditional Afro-Cuban influences into his powerful rhythmic and improvisational jazz style. Along with David Sanchez on tenor saxophone and Sepulveda on trumpet, Ruiz pulls out all the stops on "Mambo Numero Cinco" - a piece frequently heard in Cuban-American weddings and gatherings. "Michael's Mambo" showcases Ruiz's rapid-fire improvisational style on the piano. Afro-Cuban influences carry "Giovanni Speaks." Less distinct are "Home Cookin'" and "Overtime Mambo" which seem like watered down swing and have a kitschy Sim City-type feel. Overall, this is an excellent CD to showcase Hilton Ruiz's unique style and incredible musical ability.

          I'm admittedly a latecomer in appreciating this fine work; I've recently heard it for the first time on the radio. I'm fortunate to live in a metropolitan area [Denver] that has a radio station which provides airplay to music of this caliber [kuvo.org.] I've always been a fan of Mintzer's tenor work but this band is incredible! Listen to the triumphant, joyous and swinging "New Rochelle" - what a gem of a piece and flawless execution throughout. I hope some good and kind soul will find a way to allow this recording to be distributed at some point in the future!

          Latin from Manhattan is an excellent cd, and some of Mintzer's best work. My favorite tune on the album is "O Ye Como Va," because the counterpoint in the horns is just awesome. The rest of the cd is very tight, and in traditional Mintzer-sounding style. A very, very good cd and a must have for all modern big band fans.

          . . . certainly one of the greatest vibraphonists ever, these guys get a huge initial boost. Locke calls them "the strongest vibes-based trio I've ever heard." Entirely deserved, from the evidence presented on this, their debut disc, I might add. They've also managed to snag Randy Brecker on trumpet and rising guitar star Vinny Valentino for several numbers.

          Shifting easily between funk, Latin, bop, jazz beat, and beyond--sometimes within the same number (check out the astounding "La Essencia del Guanguanco")--these guys have a sound signature entirely their own: hip, fluid, drenched in the history of the music, but always searching and transformative, never static. Further proof: their jaw-dropping take on the Beatles' "Fool on the Hill" and Ellington's "Caravan"--barely recognizable and too cool for words.

          A good deal of the credit must go to John Benitez, an absolute monster on acoustic and electric bass, and Steve Hass, who brings a punkish, David King-like jazz-trash sensibility to the proceedings--entirely apposite in this wildly eclectic setting.

          Listen, these guys are the real deal. I expect to hear a lot more from them in the near future. Highest recommendation.
