Any new compilation CD starring Yo-Yo Ma is certain to please. This master of the cello takes the listener through so many types of music that the ear and mind never tire. The present selection is billed as a sort of "musical autobiography," and, indeed, it gives us a tour of Ma's musical life. The Silk Road Project is represented by Zhao's "Swallow Song," with its eerie, fascinating soundscape (specially re-recorded for this CD). We also accompany Ma on his excursions into the world of the baroque cello with Vivaldi or of the Finnish folk song (by Mamiya, a first recording). There are Gershwin's languid Second Prelude, with its intimations of the song "Summertime," and an all-new recording of a nine-minute heart-breaker by Astor Piazzolla ("Soledad"). Ma also gives us more familiar Brahms, Franck, and Saint-Saens. The compilation's mellow 65 minutes offer relaxing, beautiful music, all exquisitely played. Ma is joined by the best: Emanuel Ax, Kathryn Stott, John Williams (who plays piano on his own "Going to School" from Memoirs of a Geisha), Isaac Stern, and Claudio Abbado. This is a veritable Who's Who of superb musicians. --Robert Levine

5 out of 5 stars Pure Listening Pleasure.......2007-05-18

There is no pretension in this collection - just the pure, simple pleasure in Ma's performance and in our enjoyment.

5 out of 5 stars Appassionato.......2007-05-18

With a little help of some of his friends Yo Yo Ma offered us another of his masterpieces. No other title could define better the tracks selection, pleasant and inspired.

5 out of 5 stars Deep, Serious and diverse.......2007-04-26

Yo Yo Ma is simply fantastic, and has arrived as such a height of recognition that any production he is invovled in will be top of the line, as this is.

This is a darker collection than I expected. And like a serious, reserved friend, it can take a little longer to appreciate than the bubbly outgoing ones. I now find I like it very much, but it is serious "conversation."

There is great variety here as well, and I gave it to a friend's teenager who is considering whether she wants to learn the cello. Her response was much the same as mine. Initially not so sure, but over time, has really come to like it, too. This collection has great depth.

5 out of 5 stars Yo-Yo Ma's Appassionato.......2007-04-13

For those who share Yo-Yo Ma's passion for music, and especially his passion for diversity in music, and for connecting with the spirit of global humanity, this recording has a prominant place in your library.

5 out of 5 stars A soulful compilation.......2007-04-13

I love this album for the diversity of music and the great programming. I especially love the collaboration with Isaac Stern, no longer with us in body, but always in music. Thanks YoYo.

Here are three dozen pieces of music, all played by Yo-Yo Ma, culled from his extensive discography. Aside from the technical mastery and beautiful tone that are absolutes in all of his playing, one is dazzled by his curiosity and ability to adapt to so many forms and types of music. His Bach and Vivaldi are pellucid and played with non-sentimental crispness, his tango music gritty and rhythmically pungent, his jazz seemingly spontaneous, the "Meditation" from Thais simply ravishing, "Anything Goes" a romp, and the Appalachian music performed with both respect and a great twang, while the traditional Chinese music is fascinating. It's really a matter of how much Ma loves whatever he plays here, how entirely he becomes involved in it, and what a fine partner he invariably is to other musicians. This collection is a doozy--it is truly "essential." --Robert Levine

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars pure genius.......2007-05-21

No instrument asks more from the soul of an artist as the cello does.
Yo Yo Ma shows to be master of the instrument and his interpretations en technique are pure genius. Everyone should have this album in his (or hers of course) basic classical collection

4 out of 5 stars Another great Yo-Yo Disc.......2007-05-15

The set-up with the classical pieces on the first disc and the other on the second is excellent.

3 out of 5 stars first disc great- second a flop.......2007-04-12

the first disc is awesome. the second disc is weird and boring.

5 out of 5 stars Encore.......2007-03-31

Incredible. My young cellist (son) loves it. Beautiful music. The album is well organized and each song transitions nicely.

5 out of 5 stars The Versatile Yo-Yo Ma.......2007-03-29

I've found this collection to be extremely delightful! It gives you a sense of the versatility of Yo-Yo Ma like no other, with one disc being dedicated more to his classical side, while the other explores jazz and world music venues. Not your typical "greatest hits" collection.

5 out of 5 stars Welcome to "alternative" classical music!.......2007-02-19

It's wonderful to hear three such talented musicians put together a collection of non-classical music on revered instruments. This is not "The Yo-yo Ma Show" with two other guys! The music is varied but the performances are great and -- in some cases, e.g. Appalachia Waltz -- fantastic. I was driving the first time I heard the title piece and immediately started sobbing and had to pull over; it was that beautiful! This would be a good CD choice for children to listen to, as it gives a fine exposure to the amazing sounds that the three instruments can make when in the right hands.

5 out of 5 stars It's Yo-Yo so it's Exquisite.......2007-02-12

Yo-yo Ma has never been content to stick with the standard cello classics. Of course he has recorded the classics - the magnificent Bach Cello Suites (incredible and the visual DVD only enhances the effect), Vivaldi, Beethoven, Faure, Dvorak, etc. His evolution as an artist is an on-going process, thus there's Yo-Yo playing Tango (Astor Piazzolla), Yo-Yo playing Jazz (Claude Boling), Yo-yo playing Brazilian music or John Williams. And now we have the Apalachia Waltz, a beautiful, virtuoso and haunting piece.
I, too, found many of the sounds unique. For a real experience, listen in a darkened room with a pair of superior earphones - the things you pick up will shock. I literally turned my head several times, convinced that the artist was in the room.

As one reviewer noted, this is not supposed to be the rustic sound one might imagine or (the reverse) simply an intellectual exercise. The artist (with able assistance) seems to draw on some kind of inner reserve and literally pour his soul into his newest project. I, for one, applaud this widening of the boundaries between genres and hope that it continues.
Let's not forget the other artists, particularly Meyer. Many times the celebrity saps all the attention leaving a wake of sore feeling in their wake. Ma has always been one to give credit where credit is due and in this case it is due to those who ably assisted him. My grade - A

5 out of 5 stars Love it- great for weddings.......2007-01-24

I used this and Appalachian Journey for my wedding music. I used Track 2 (Appalachian Waltz) as my entry music. The rest I just had playing on a cd player as background music while my guests were waiting on me. It was perfect for our outdoor Fall wedding. Hearing track 2 always brings the memory of our beautiful day flooding back.

5 out of 5 stars Stellar album.......2006-11-10

This disc is top-notch in all respects. The playing is great by Ma and O'Conner for sure, but the bass work is awesome. Meyer is as good a player as there is in the world at the present time in my opinion. I am a cellist and bassist and find it difficult to believe that some of the things he does are possible. If you like top quality string playing, order this album today.

5 out of 5 stars **Superb**.......2006-07-19

I absolutely love this album -- the music resonates with one's soul. Even if you don't have a cello fetish as I, you can't go wrong with this album. It offers a wonderful range from adagio to allegro.....A true musical feast. I especially enjoy Butterfly's Day Out and First Impressions. Dolce...

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Finally.............2007-07-17

I have three copies of the Mobile Fidelity version of this CD from 1994 (because it's so great and I got a couple of them used), but aside from that, you couldn't get the 1976 version of this album on CD until now. I'm amazed that it took so long to release this version. The remastering job that was done on this entire package is amazing, and the booklet and photos show how much care was put into this edition. Doesn't matter whether you prefer the '76 or '87 versions, they both sound phenominal.

As for me, I prefer the '76 version because it sounds much more haunting, especially "Fall of the House of Usher". I would never argue with what Orson Welles' narration brought to the newer version, it's great. I just feel that the older version was more organic and more intense. This is one of those albums to put on headphones after midnight and listen start to finish. It doesn't even seem like separate songs, it's one whole piece with so many different moods that set up each other.

For example, after the "Prelude" to "Fall of the House of Usher", cracks of thunder, an ominous organ, and then a deceptively pleasant melody for "Arrival", and then Intermezzo, which sounds eerie enough intself before "Pavane". This is such a gentle piece with mainly harpsichord and harp that sets up and gradually segues into the brutal "Fall". This part is so much more frightening on the '76 version, and part of it is due to the way it begins creeping through in the last 30 seconds of "Pavane". I'm sure you'll get a chill from "Fall", especially if you've closed your eyes and imagined the story of the "Fall of the House of Usher" through each part. Finally, after that, "To One in Paradise", which sounds like Poe's biography in four minutes. Or, as Eric Woolfson put it, an epitaph.

With some Alan Parsons fans who are only familiar with the albums from "I Robot" on, you might not know about this one because it was originally issued on another label and took so long to be released on CD (at least, the original version was). Also, it didn't really have any hit singles, even though a couple were released and didn't chart all that high. Don't miss out on this new reissue. In addition to getting both versions, you get some great bonus tracks that feature an informative interview with Parsons and Woolfson, some demos, and the great original Orson Welles voice parts.

Finally, I need to take a minute here. Kudos to a classic rock station in Kansas City, I think it was KYYS. I was there in 2004, and they not only played "System of Doctor Tarr and Professor Fether", but they played the original version!

5 out of 5 stars ABSOLUTELY SUPERB EDITION.......2007-07-02

This set caps the re-release of the first four AP-supervised remastered titles (three more to follow in September '07, and the final three in December).

For this edition, for the first time on CD, we finally get the original 1976 mix of the album that started it all. While I definitely prefer the '87 remix, there are passages in the original I also enjoy, so it's great to finally be able to compare the two, especially in glorious, remastered form.

In the additional material, there are two excellent spoken-word pieces: One, Orson Welles' entire original recitation, sans music/effects, and also a very enjoyable 8+ minute 1976 radio interview with AP and EW.

The booklet is a wonderful, detailed labor of love, with a great essay.

If you're an APP fan, this is an absolute must-own.

With the help of some friends (James Taylor and Alison Krauss lend some vocal support), the trio of Yo-Yo Ma, Edgar Meyer, and Mark O'Connor have created yet another fascinating hybrid of chamber music and bluegrass. This follow-up to 1996's Appalachia Waltz is filled with highly lyrical string passages, a homage or two to Copland, and plenty of tracks where Meyer's bass vamps with the best of them. This is reflective (and relaxing) music, lacking the intricate structure of classical music and the rough edges of folk. But, boy, is it catchy! Yo-Yo Ma fans may be disappointed to hear that--aside from the gorgeous "Duet for Cello and Bass"--the cellist takes more of a supportive role on this disc. Still, this is fun music, more intimate than Short Trip Home (Meyer's other crossover project for Sony), but still lively (just check out "1B" or "Caprice for Three"). --Jason Verlinde

5 out of 5 stars Best on the Planet!.......2006-03-24

These are flawless preformances of great music by some of the most talented artists on the planet. Slumber My Darling will leave you so relaxed you'll have to remember to breathe. The reels will bring you to your feet. This music reaches the soul as well as the ear.

1 out of 5 stars Stilted.......2005-12-15

I suppose you will enjoy this if you really like Yo-Yo Ma at his most boring. This is glorified elevator music and about as interesting.

5 out of 5 stars Walking the trail.......2005-08-07

I actually heard this cd while having a root canal done at the dentist's office. I find the music so wonderful and the vocal segments are great. It does make you feel like you are walking the Appalachian Trail...and makes a root canal painless!

5 out of 5 stars Superb concert.......2005-08-02

I have bought two copies of this disc -- one for my car. The music is wonderful, and the performances are memorable. There's a DVD version, which is equally good. The performers obviously loved working together, and that's fully evident.

2 out of 5 stars Too Studied.......2005-06-22

Two of my favorite CDs in the last couple of years were "Obrigado Brazil" and "In Full Swing" by Yo Yo Ma and Mark O'Connor respectively. I found both of those CDs to be fine examples of genre-busting joyful music making. So when I saw these guys paired here, I snapped it up. Unfortunately, I was disappointed.

The music throughout most of the CD sounds too labored, too studied. It is, frankly, not that inspiring. The playing throughout is, of course, of the highest calibre and the recorded sound excellent. But there is no hint of the exhuberance of Folk or Bluegrass which is the supposed inspiration for the disc. The guest spots by James Taylor and Alison Krauss are good but they sound like outtakes from their own CDs, these songs are out of context here. (But note how many other Amazon reviews reference their contributions as reasons for loving the CD. Perhaps so many five star ratings because these people need broader musical exposure?)

Too many critics over intellectualize. I base my ratings on one simple criterion: How much did the music move me? In this case, not much.

On Music for Two, banjo wizard Béla Fleck and stand-up bass maestro Edgar Meyer effortlessly sail through a challenging program that includes compositions by Bach, a sonata by Henry Eccles, a Miles Davis tune, and a number of self-composed finger twisters. The amazing thing about this varied selection is not its eclecticism--which is only to be expected with these two--but that it all blends together so seamlessly. Fleck's jazz-tinged compositions (like "The Lake Effect") and Meyer's bluegrass-inspired tunes (like "Wishful Thinking") sit so comfortably next to Bach's baroque jewels and Davis's cool jazz that it makes you question the entire of concept of musical classification. (In fact, the Bach preludes, inventions, and partitas translate so well to the banjo/bass arrangements, you have to wonder if old JSB might not have had a bit of bluegrass in his soul.) Music for Two was recorded live at a series of 2001 concerts, where Fleck and Meyer proved conclusively that the banjo and the bass were capable of remarkable subtlety and not just twang and boom. --Michael John Simmons

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have.......2007-04-25

These two really sound good together. If you're not so impressed with the music when you first hear it (I don't know if that's possible), check out the DVD that comes with it. You will gain such an appreciation for the music that's being played. Watch out for the guy making the banjo jokes. This CD is really an incredible work, I can't say it enough. Very relaxing music.

4 out of 5 stars Broad Spectrum Virtuosity.......2007-04-23

This album runs the gamut of styles and genre. It is hard to get bored when a musical turn is but a few notes away. The two musicians integrate their instruments with incredible skill. I hate to give it a four star rating. The music is worth the 5. The loooooong, live applause tracks detract from the album. The asides by the musicians are sometimes hard to hear. Minor aggravations aside, this album plays frequently, very frequently, in our home, car, iPods, etc.

5 out of 5 stars Cool Pairing for Meyer/Fleck Fans.......2007-01-02

I've seen both Edgar Meyer and Bela Fleck live (unfortunately not together) and I really think this album just captures the magic of their live shows: I can almost see them in my living room together! For those not so familiar with the music of one or both the inclusion of classical tunes with those composed by Meyer/Fleck and other contemporary songwriters is a cool drink of water. Music for Two is a good intro to the world of cozy bluegrass.

5 out of 5 stars Bela Fleck + Edgar Meyer = strange mixture .......2006-11-10

Bela Fleck is one of the my jazz favorites... And hi with combination called Edgar Meyer are... great music!!!

5 out of 5 stars Virtuosity Knows No Musical Boundaries.......2006-10-22

Béla Fleck & Edgar Meyer are both extraordinarily accomplished musicians who spend much of their time in very different worlds: Fleck in his newgrass space and Meyer in a more classical mode. But each has travelled in the other's territory before, and on this CD they connect around more genres than you can shake a stick at. In addition to their own compositions they tackle many of their joint favorites. The affection shows in the passion of the playing and the obvious camaraderie. And the accompanying DVD is a treat. Don't miss this one.

4 out of 5 stars Only ONE thing could have made this a better CD..........2007-01-10

This awesome rock & roll album would have been even better had it included just one thing: the SINGLE version of "Free Ride", available on the "Edgar Winter Collection" from Rhino. It was the followup single to their huge hit "Frankenstein". Like Three Dog Night and a few other artists back in roughly that same time frame, a trip back into the studio was made to create even hotter versions of the songs to be played on the radio. The single version of "Free Ride" is just that much hotter, that much punchier and that much more full of life....and was a huge hit itself! One listen and you'll see what I mean. I'm not saying the album track isn't good...I'm just saying the single version just jumps right out at you, daring you to resist it. As for the rest of the album, I can't say anything that most of these other reviewers have said. One of the best of the 70s, full of great rock & roll music and a pure joy to listen to!

5 out of 5 stars Monster Album!.......2006-11-26

Arguably, Edgar Winter Group's best album, this chart topper fused standard rock with `monster rock' and plenty of synthesizers. Edgar Winter and Rick Derringer cut loose with these self penned songs. "Hangin' Around" and "Alta Mira" are fun dance rock numbers that portray Winter at his best. "Free Ride" and "We All Had A Real Good Time" became FM rock standards with their `party on' style. Not to pigeon-hole themselves as purely hard rock, "Autumn" is a rare and unexpected ballad showcasing the groups songwriting skill. Of course, "Frankenstein" was the monster hit here and it combined a new found use of loud drums and maximum synthesizer along with unique guitar riffs and Winter's own splendid saxophone. It's a killer album that stands the test of time.

5 out of 5 stars Remarkable! Exciting and Yet Oddly Charming.......2006-07-17

I had really ever only known about Edgar Winter from their occasional spots on classic rock radio, with their tunes Frankenstein and Free Ride, never really thinking about what other type of music they made and shrugged them off as no more than a one-hit wonder.

But one I picked up the album about six months back and have listened to it probably fifty times through. It is very hard for myself to start playing it and switch to something out on my playlist without listening to it in its entirety. While none of the songs in my mind (except for Frankenstein) truly stick out (which is possibly why it is not more well known,) the album gels together as a whole so well that few albums match it in terms of pure consistency.

While many of the songs seem simple in appearance, the instrumentation, the dynamics, and the full-blown singing of the more uptempo songs give a level of sophistication, yet remarkable, fun sound to each and every song, all the while staying unique from every other. Added to this, is the even more surprising fact that the two love songs, Round and Round, and Autumn, are two of the most beautiful songs to ever come out of a rock album, let alone a hard rock one.

Hanging Around is one of the best openers one could ever hope to have for an album, infectious, fun, spirited, truly awesome.

When It Comes is possibly the raunchiest sounding Edgar ever sounded (if that's really him singing, I'm not really sure since it sounds as if there are nine different voices singing each of the songs with lyrics), other great, fun sounding song.

Alta Mira is very quirky, yet charming song that you can't help but sing along to. Has an almost Jamaician sound that makes it all the more infectious.

Free Ride needs no explanation, as it's impossible to live past the age of 10 and not have heard the song at least once.

Undercover Man is probably the only weak song on the album if only for the ending which I think it stretched out just a bit too long. Although, it's Edgar in very fine form in terms of loud, almost off-kilter singing.

Round & Round is possibly my favorite song on the album, with its wonderful mix and acoustic and almost country-rock sound. Beautiful.

A ridiculous change of pace from Round & Round (although that's not a bad thing.) The song is basically self-evident from the title... Rock and Roll Boogie Woogie Blues. It delivers perfectly.

Autumn, as said before, is quite possibly the most beautiful rock song I've ever had the pleasure of listening to. Beyond gorgeous.

And almost lastly, another huge change of pace with quite possibly a song that perfectly exemplifies the college spirit (woot), with We All Had a Real Good Time. If there's a better song out there that keeps the fun, youthful spirit of us kids and of the basic tenets of Rock n' Roll, I've yet to hear it.

Well, if you're not convinced, then its at the fault of this reviewer and not the album.. for it is truly one of the best hard rock has to offer. Better than anything Skynyrd or Ted Nugent or Black Sabbath or Led Zeppelin has to offer. And that's no lie. A wonderful standout from 1972 (although it's difficult for me to say that definitively, since I was -13 at the time.)

5 out of 5 stars A classic Rock And Roll Masterpiece.......2006-07-07

I purchased this album only yesterday and have listened to it over and over again. This is truly one of rock's few masterpieces. Hangin around is a fun opening song. Alta Mira is a nice rock and roll song. Free Ride is great well mixed too. And who could forget Frankenstein the masterpiece of masterpieces this is the best song in the whole world. You will be happy with your purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Album..............2006-03-13

About the time this record came out, but before I ever heard of it, I saw the EWG at a roller rink in Elizabeth, NJ with my friends. They opened up with "Keep Playin' That Rock and Roll" but unlike the White Trash version with horns, it was dominated by Ronnie Montrose' raunchy guitar and I fell in love. I went as soon as I could to Korvette's, where I bought most of my records in those days, to get the new LP that Edgar mentioned while on stage. I took one look at the cover and said, "What is this......" I was happy that I bought it and I still go back to it frequently. In fact, I am probably in the minority here, but "Frankenstein" is my least favorite song and I usually skip it. But listen to all the other songs, starting with "Hangin' Around" and "When it Comes" and you will be hooked quick. The slow ballad "Autumn" and the latin sounding "Alta Mira" sound different, but all the tracks add up to one of the greatest LP's ever recorded. In my opinion, Edgar Winter never reached this level again.

5 out of 5 stars Uncommon Ritual.......2007-06-27

Utterly fabulous! This album is an important addition to any collection of Edgar Meyer's work, or a great introduction for anyone interested in modern American folk music. The songs will keep your head nodding and your toes tapping as you listen to pieces that range from exquisitely simplistic to incredibly complex.

5 out of 5 stars Background Music?.......2007-01-02

This is a brilliant, beautiful, fun album that really makes Meyer's command of a complex and much under-appreciated instrument seem god given. In spite of the fact that there aren't any words the music on here stakes a claim for itself outside of just background music because it can be pretty edgy and raw at times. I like the combination of old folk tunes covered and Meyer's avant-garde double bass compositions, although this album's not for those looking for lots of covers of classical tunes.

5 out of 5 stars An absolute must-buy for any collection........2006-07-01

This is an amazing album! The combination of talent, musicianship, and artistry on this album is startling. It is a perfect blend of classical, rock, blues, jazz, and folk influences; there is really something for everyone here. One cannot listen to this album without getting lost in the music. As a fellow composer and string player, I highly recommend Uncommon Ritual.

5 out of 5 stars Creative Composers with a New Vein of Music.......2006-04-09

There is a real joy in discovering the work of contemporary composers who lighten the music world with abundant creativity. Such is the case for Edgar Meyer, B?la Fleck and Mike Marshall. These three not only compose but also perform their own compositions on this completely delightful CD sampler.

The works marry American folk tune semblances with folk music sounds from stray parts of the world. But they also know their classical training and the roundelays on old themes and styles prove to be some of the most exciting. Edgar Meyer plays Bass, Contrabass , Mandocello, and Piano; B?la Fleck plays Banjo, Electric Guitar, Gut String Guitar, Mandolin, national steel guitar, and Track Performer; and Mike Marshall plays Guitar, Mandocello, Mandola, Mandolin, and Track Performer. Just listing the instruments involve in this m?lange of works suggests that the music is unlike any you may have heard before, especially in the chamber music atmosphere it is played.

All three artists are gifted with fertile minds and technical demands for the instruments used. The result is a recital of endlessly interesting music, as fresh as morning sun and equally as welcome! Grady Harp, April 06

Except for one "previously unreleased" recording and two new ones, this is a compilation of segments taken from older Yo-Yo Ma CDs, perhaps to whet listeners' appetite to hear the entire records. The disc represents a triumph of performance over material. The program consists of short pieces and single movements of long ones and serves to display Yo-Yo Ma's extraordinary versatility, his spectacular instrumental and musical gifts, and his remarkable ability to invest everything he plays with the same commitment and emotional concentration. There is no logic to the sequence, except that it begins and ends with solo cello. Bach, whom Ma plays tuned normally when unaccompanied and tuned low with the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, may justify the CD's title but seems out of place. Moreover, juxtaposing him with O'Connor and Piazzolla is jarring, though the Tangos are beautiful. The transcription of Dvorák's lovely E-minor Slavonic Dance, despite the participation of violinist Itzhak Perlman and his golden tone, sounds like a movie soundtrack: all bravura and cheap effects. The playing's the thing, and it is stunning, not only Yo-Yo Ma's, but that of all his collaborators, from vocalists Bobby McFerrin and Alison Krauss to pianist Emanuel Ax, Ma's duo partner of 25 years. Ax joins Ma for the Finale of Brahms's second cello sonata; that is what you may find yourself humming at the end. --Edith Eisler

4 out of 5 stars New Yo-Yo Fan.......2006-07-09

I had never listened to Yo-Yo Ma before (that I knew of) and then I was at a dance recital a few months ago. Two little ballerinas danced to "Simple Gifts" with Alison Kraus, and I had to have that song. I really enjoy playing this album when my family is just hanging out reading or playing with the baby in the living room. Each piece is unique and beautiful in its own way. Simple Gifts is still my favorite piece on the album, I only wish it were longer!

5 out of 5 stars Simply wonderful!.......2006-06-04

I recently got this CD as a birthday gift. I've been wanting this CD for a while. The first track is a wonderful song in all reality the entire CD is a wonderful experience. The prelude by Gershwin is unique sounding with the cello. The jazz quality is still there and has a bit of classical influence intertwined among it. Yo-Yo Ma's recording of Simple Gifts is a good song and when they had the lyrics sung by Alison Krauss it was a wonderful choice. Her vocals matched the cello incredibly well. Track 8 is a wonderful song that I love to hear being played on the cello. For any person who loves classical music or cello music this CD is a good choice to buy. It will be well worth your money.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2004-08-20

While most people on this site see the "classic" in the title of the album as referring to classical music only, they are mistaken. Classic Yo-Yo refers to his style, not the genre into which his music choices fall. The list of tracks alone should have been a big enough clue that the music isn't all classical. Judging this album, or any album for that matter, on just its title is simply foolish. And while this is technically a solo album, the way Yo-Yo brings in guest artists to perform with him shows his flexibility as an artist. His version of Simple Gifts is so much more than a school chorus; it is an amazing cellist playing the accompaniment on a song that is meant to be sung.

On a more positive note, I found every track beautiful, from the elegant solo cello in the Bach cello suite to the haunting vocal line in the Bobby McFerrin piece. Yo-Yo Ma gathered a wide range of intriguing pieces to make this fantastic album.

2 out of 5 stars What is this?.......2004-02-10

This is a compilation of many different styles; look Yo-Yo can play bluegrass! Not really "Classic" Yo-Yo.

3 out of 5 stars Great if you're not familiar with Yo-Yo Ma.......2002-12-27

This CD is a good sample of what yo-yo ma has acheived in his musical career, if you want a more in depth listening of his talents than I suggest getting the simply baroque CD. The only thing that I didn't like about this cd was that the compositions were to mixed up in the genres. There was a bit of classical, some movie works, a great song by John Williams, and some of The Tango series music. If you would rather listen to one genre, get a CD that just has Classical or Contemerary, don't get a jack of all trades cd.

Amazon.com essential recording

It's not surprising that this sublime performance of Wagner's Tristan und Isolde has remained on the market for so long: Wilhelm Furtwängler's reading of the tale with Ludwig Suthaus, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, and Kirsten Flagstad is probably definitive. The conductor is peerless at achieving a strong sense of direction throughout the epic length. Carlos Kleiber's controversial version with the Dresden State Orchestra might boast orchestral fireworks (abetted by modern recording technology), but if you're looking for a Tristan in which the singing takes center stage, this is the recording to buy. Newly remastered with Abbey Road Technology as part of EMI's Great Recordings of the Century series. --Joshua Cody

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Hey this set was $60 for almost 20 years!.......2007-06-04

I listened to it at the library in the 80s, but you couldn't turn it up very loud. I'll bet this issue will suppress sales of all other performances!

5 out of 5 stars The BEST Tristan to date. Furtwangler's magic!.......2007-02-05

This is the best version of Tristan I have EVER heard. The sound quality is good but the performances are just thrilling. The duets are stunning. If you buy one Tristan make it this one. For those of us who do not speak German read up on the plot first and then enjoy. Fantastic.

5 out of 5 stars I don't have 10 stars!.......2007-01-20

The maximum! The very best version of all times

5 out of 5 stars A Great Reading... A Great Recording!.......2006-11-22

It's hard to imagine that anything can be better. So don't try. This is the best-recorded version of this amazing opera I have ever heard. A truly unmatched achievement in sound direction and vocal virtuosity.
"Classic" or "Legendary" recordings turn off some people due to the fact that they never know what kind of sound quality they will receive. Let me tell you as an audiophile, conductor, composer, musician and long time music listener: This is not what you think! It is a wonderfully clear, bold and warm recording with great dynamic influx and solid resonance that will fill any room on a good set of speakers. There is no better way to enjoy this great masterpiece! Bravo EMI! Bravo Furtwangler! This is without a doubt one of the 20th century's greatest sound recordings!

5 out of 5 stars Twilight of the god and goddess.......2006-06-29

Certainly one of the greatest opera recordings ever, if not the greatest. It hardly matters that this Tristan and Isolde was recorded circa 1950; this true classic, remastered, its glory intact, is a musical marvel for the ages that is nearly outside of time in its magnificence. Conductor Wilhelm Furtwangler (my all-time favorite conductor name--so Germanic!), was at the height of his conducting powers here, just as the great, legendary soprano Kirsten Flagstad, who also soars. Does she ever! Flagstad is known of course for her 1930s Metropolitan Opera Wagner performances, as well as appearances at Covent Garden in the late 1940s. Isolde was perhaps her greatest role. Usually she was paired with Lauritz Melchior (reportedly replaced at the last minute here by the sublime Ludwig Suthaus as Tristan due to Melchior's illness). Flagstad gave us her greatest Isolde at the twilight of her career. The entire cast and recording crew deserve great praise. Furtwangler delivers no less than the penultimate Tristan and Isolde. Aged and ill he may have been in faltering physical health, but his spirit was obviously never more vibrant. Together he and Flastad created a musical treasure that will live on forever. Five stars? More like a thousand!
