4 out of 5 stars Nice to listen.......2007-05-10

Not quite sure what would be the relation of classic music with baby's IQ. I have seen some prenatal DVD talking about studies showing that toddlers with musical practice get better test scores than the group without stimulation from music; same as color and geometry shapes.

1 out of 5 stars why?.......2005-10-28

Why do they keep making these "Mozart (and other composers) for..." CDs? I know I know. For idiots to buy them of course so the record company can make tons of money. But I feel it's an insult to classical music. No offense but Mozart didn't write this music for your unborn child. He couldn't care less to tell you the truth. I think he'd be pretty mad seeing how his music is being exploited these days. Why can't people just buy and listen to classical music as it was intended. Buy a set of Mozart's violin concertos or maybe Don Giovanni if you're so inclined. But not this "potpourri excerpts from his work" trash. Another option is to listen to the local classical radio station. Gosh, these kinds of CDs have gone too far. What's next - "Tchaikovsky for Taking a Dump"? Sheeesh....Don't suport this if you care about preserving an art...

5 out of 5 stars Nice compilation; good brand.......2005-07-19

I really like this series of compilations that Phillips has released. I own a number of these discs, and they are all quality recordings. Because I know that the music is excellent, and I trust the brand, discs such as Mozart for Mommies and Daddies make wonderful gfits. I have given this particular one to a number of my friends who have had children recently. It is a great way to introduce your child, or your family (you included) to classical music. Recommended.

3 out of 5 stars 5 stars for the music, 1 star for the lies they tell you.......2005-03-12

When it comes to the music, you certainly can do worse than this, but PLEASE, people, enough with this "Mozart makes baby smarter" BS, it SIMPLY ISN'T TRUE. This is all based on extremely tenuous data that has never stood up to empirical testing, and these days serves more as an excuse for hucksters to buy the rights to assorted recordings, slap together a Mozart CD on the cheap, and make a few quick bucks.

Are you just using this for your kid to fall asleep by? I guess that is all well and good, but it doesn't have to be Mozart. Branch out a little, for crying out loud! My 19-month-old daughter went to sleep a couple of nights ago to Stravinsky's "Symphony of Psalms," and last week it was Copland's "Billy the Kid" ballet. If she turns out to be a brainiac, I doubt very much it is from the music, although I hope she grows up to have a more sophisticated musical palate than her peers. But it has been my experience that if she is tired enough, she will fall asleep to damn near anything. If that is the case, why enrich some scam artist?

5 out of 5 stars Superior Performances. Mozart is Food for the Brain........2002-11-17

What differentiates this collection from other "Mozart for young children" CD's is that it is played by classical music virtuosos. Some of the biggest names are included, and the performances are outstanding.

Playing quality music like this on a daily basis in the background or in the car will help your child's development in many areas. Mozart is food for the brain.

I also highly recommend any other piano works (sonatas, variation, trios, etc.) by Mozart.

5 out of 5 stars Delightful arias beautifully sung by von stade.......2004-12-12

This is a very enjoyable CD, von stade's mezzo is so lovely!
It's good to have some rare haydn opera arias along-side the famous mozart and rossini arias.
von stade's rendition of "nacqui allaffanno...non piu mesta" is my favourite, she is dazzling in "non piu mesta" without being exaggerated like Bartoli.

5 out of 5 stars Frederica = Fantastic!.......2001-07-07

First of all, Frederica von Stade is one of my favorite singers. The first time I saw her was in the 1973 production of Le Nozze di Figaro with Kiri te Kanawa and Ileana Cotrubas. She played Cherubino, and was incredible. The first time I listened to her, "Voi che sapete," I was sobbing, the music was so beautiful. Well, I wanted to get her cd a LOT. This one had "Voi che sapete" so I chose it, knowing that I'd hear at least one thing that I liked. Instead, I liked - or loved - everything. Her Haydn is so great to listen to- I love her teasing, "Una donna come me." Her two arias from Mozart's Figaro are great, and her, "Vedrai, carino" from Don Giovanni is the best ever for sure. The arias from, "La Clemenza di Tito" are nice but lack certain emotion. The Rossini pieces are sung swoopingly and happily, especially "Una voce poco fa." Frederica von Stade is one-of-a-kind. Don't miss this cd.

5 out of 5 stars Flicka is wonderful!.......2000-11-23

This is the debut recording for Frederica von Stade, I think. Since I have watched the wonderful "La Cenerentola" with Abbado from DG, I searched for Flicka's Cenerentola. At last I found it! Now I'm very happy to hear it. Her Rossini is very elegant and beautiful. When you hear her Angelina's aria, you may think she is scolded to by her stepfather and stepsister, but she hopes someday she will be happy. She is the Cinderella many people think. Her Cherbino is wonderful and charming, too.

Flicka's voice is mellow and charming, beautiful. You will love it. The former reviewer said she lacked the technique to produce a full, satisfying sound. I agreed with it. But when I listen to this album, I always found myself to love it and know I'll hear this album again.

Also recommend: French Opera Arias from Sony Classical

3 out of 5 stars Devoted Von Stade fans will rate it higher..........2000-08-18

Whether or not you like this CD will likely depend upon whether or not you like the sound of Frederica von Stade's voice from the mid-1970's, which is when these arias were recorded. She has always had a wonderful rapport with audiences; I treasure the memories of a live recital and a master class I attended a few years ago. But earlier in her career, it was the opinion of many (including my voice teachers) that she lacked the technique to produce a full, satisfying sound. Others have always loved her voice (perhaps because her style of production does give her singing an endearingly vulnerable quality), and they will almost certainly love this CD. It does seem to me, though, that her sound could be better. I find it frustrating that, after a ringing recitative on "Ecco il punto", the fluidity of her phrasing in the beginning of the aria "Non piu di fiore" is almost lost in the orchestra. This could be a problem of recording balance, but in listening to her more exposed singing in arias from the Haydn operas and Le Nozze di Figaro, I think it really is the fact that the core of the sound is missing in her production.

The repertoire itself has a lot of interest. The segments from Haydn's "La fedelta premiata" are taken from the first recording of this opera, following a revival in 1970. Haydn's operas in general provide a surprisingly satisfying followup when you have heard and heard all the wonderful Mozart operas and want more in the same style. "Dell'amor mio fedele" is very beautiful music indeed. I was also impressed with the beauty of the aria from Rossini's "Otello", an opera which is not often heard (evidently the libretto is disappointing).

Those who are not enamored of Von Stade's voice will probably feel that the more famous repertoire, such as Rossini's "Una voce poco fa" and "Non piu mesta" and the Mozart arias, is in better hands on other recordings, but I haven't heard enough of the more recently available recordings of these to be able to make recommendations. An obvious alternative would be Bartoli, another specialist in this repertoire who is adored by many and decried by others, and I'm sure it would be worth checking out other artists too.

4 out of 5 stars An Alternative view for moms.......2004-07-15

The review by the previous listener who was, dissapointed that this recording, received as a gift, is opera was apparently looking for "soothing" music (possibly elevator music)to put her and possibly her child-to-be to sleep. I agree - if jello is what you seek, do not purchase this disc. If, on the other hand, you seek passion, beauty, and possibly a widening of your musical horizons, do, by all means, purchase this disc. Soaring arias, heavenly voices and the most lovely music imaginable await you. Still, Richard Clayderman and Britney Spears are available to you and your unfortunate child.

3 out of 5 stars Good if you like Opera.......2004-02-11

I received this CD as a gift and was very disappointed to discover it was opera. I have other CD's of Mozart's music that are instrumental and very soothing. If you like opera then it may be a good choice for you, but if you are like me and don't care for opera you are probably better off sticking to an instrumental collection.

5 out of 5 stars A Superstar To Remember.......2007-01-10

I fell in love with opera because of Mirella Freni. I heard her sing Mimi to Pavarotti's Rodolfo in La Boheme about 30 years ago. Hearing this CD was like seeing a long-lost love, and appreciating them even more this time around.

Freni was a Puccini specialist, and you get an embarrasment of Puccini riches on this CD. Of course, you get the arias "Si, mi chiamano Mimi" and "Addio...D'Onde lieta usci" from La Boheme. Those also feature the incredible Niccolai Gedda. I sure would have liked it if they threw in "O soave fanciulla" as well. You also get arias from Tosca, Madama Butterfly, La Rondine, Gianni Schicci, Suor Angelica, and Turandot.

But wait, there's more! I had not heard Freni sing Micaela until this CD. Wait until you hear the "Je dis que rien ne m'epouvant". It will set you free. Then she throws in "Comme autrefois" from Pearl Fishers. Donizetti, Cilea, Mascagni, Massenet, Bellini, Gounod, Mozart, even Verdi(!)...all here.

There was one thing I found unusual about this compilation, and that was the noticeable absence of "Dove sono" and/or "Porgi amor". I mean, those roles are clearly in the reach of any lyric soprano. I did a little research, and found that she really didn't sing the Countess role in Figaro, she sang Susanna! OK, so let's just say her voice was on the light end of the lyric fach. If that's the case, it makes selections from Tosca, Butterfly, Traviata, Turandot, and Forza kind of curious, doesn't it?

In the end, it doesn't matter. This is an awesome compilation from one of the greatest sopranos of all time. No one is like Freni, and no opera lover should be without this performance record.

Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars I'm am so glad I found this CD!.......2004-07-17

I'm a casual opera fan and I admit that until a few days ago I didn't even know who Mirella Freni was. Then a friend, whose taste I respect mentioned that an Italian lady named Freni was the second greatest Violetta he'd ever heard. He went into raptures and I decided that I had to hear this woman. This morning I bought the CD, put it in my player and was astounded and delighted to hear one of the sweetest voices I have ever heard in my life. Mirella Freni's singing is simply beautiful.

5 out of 5 stars My growing affection.......2004-05-25

Freni is a soprano I didn't much care for in the past. For some reason I took her for granted and didn't listen to her records a lot. However, in search for an lyric soprano with ample coloratura to tackle bel canto roles as well, Freni was one of the few I could think of who had the qualities I was looking for; unmistakeable Italian phrasing and musicality, a firm middle register with an easy top and a sweet timbre.

This new release is a great introduction to her big recording legacy. She didn't possess the largest instrument but her technique and wise choices allowed her to expand her repertoire in many areas. The lyrical roles such as Zerlina, Mimi, Liu suit her the best but notice how a more florid part like Norina in Don Pasquale or even the more demanding Puritani Elvira benefits from her firm lyric sound. She avoids the highest notes and if needed sings them carefully but everything is so charmingly sung that a single note cannot ruin the whole. Sincere classical singing does not lie in a single note. Even without the large voice these roles need, she handles the heavy Verdi parts impressively. "O patria mia" and especially Desdemona's scene are magnificient.

This collection has increased my admiration for this wonderful artist. If all the sopranos were flowers in a garden, Freni would be a lovely daisy.

5 out of 5 stars A great voice and a great lady!.......2004-02-07

Mirella Freni's singing even today when she's over sixty still teaches all the young sopranos a lesson how a voice can be preserved. Her singing is lovely, creamy and colourful. She's by far my favourite Liu and part of the Mimi-Triumvirate: Victoria de los Angeles, Maria Callas and Mirella Freni. Her first Mimi with Nicolai Gedda was a revelation, the complete set is a must for ever Puccini-Lover. And despite its not being idiomatic and her poor French her Juliette is riveting and lovely. But my favourite Freni-role will always be Elisabetta in Verdi's "Don Carlo" which she sang to perfection on a live-recording from La Scala (Abbado) featuring Carreras, Ghiaurov, Obraszowa etc. etc. An amazing set for those who want to know why Mirella is still adored today!

5 out of 5 stars A Bible of Soprano Singing.......2003-04-30

Many of these items were available on different cd, now out of print. That disc introduced me to the art of Mirella Freni, and one listening had me hooked. Mirella Freni is my favorite artist in any genre. She has taken such good care of her voice that she is still singing and getting fantastic reviews at the age of 68. She started off by singing lyric/coloratura roles such as Adina, Susanna, Zerlina, Micaela, the Puritani Elvira, then came Mimi, Juliette, Violetta, Marguerite, Manon, which which had heavier orchestrations. The seventies saw Freni's voice expanding and growing naturally very unlike Renata Scotto, who pushed her voice to sing roles too heavily orchestrated. Scotto is a great artist, but nobody can deny the fact that her voice turned terribly shrill. New roles for Freni were Desdemona, Elisabetta, Aida, Tosca and Butterfly (on record) and Boito's Marguerita. Never forcing or pushing, she sang these roles with great success and beautiful tone. She also was expanding emotionally and her characterizations grew deeper and more intense. In the 80's, she continued to expand her repertoire, though not giving up old roles, to include Manon Lescaut, Adriana Lecouvreur, Tschaikovsky's Tatyana and Liza with incredible results. She still added new roles in the 90's and into the 21st century, Fedora, Madame Sans Genes and Tschaikovsky's Maid of Orleans (a mezzo role). Unlike Tebaldi and other Italian sopranos, Freni often sang roles in their original language, French, Russain and songs in German. We only get to hear French and Italian here, and I strongly urge any opera lover to seek out her recordings on other labels than EMI. DG, for her wonderful Manon Lescaut, 2nd Butterfly, 2nd Tosca, Tatyana, Boccanegra's Amelia. On London/Decca, her Mimi (legendary), Butterfly, Nedda, Nannetta, Margharita, Mathilde, Tosca, the Trittico heroines (a Suor Angelica that is supreme).
Now, about the singing on this disc:
The Pasquale aria is nicely done (though I prefer Sill's rendition). The Boheme numbers are legendary, enough said. The Tosca aria is my favorite of all soprano's and ever Freni's (she recorded it at least twice more), beautiful and slow. Her Butterfly is regarded as "model" and her singing of both arias are intense and heart wrenching. Her Amico Fritz arias are perfectly judged and performed. The Adriana arias are fine, though they would grow in character when she took on the full role in the 80's and I prefer her later recording of them for Decca on her Verismo Arias disc. Her Micaela is also regarded as legendary and this recording shows why. The Pearl Fishers, Faust and Manon arias are gorgeously sung with golden tone and the Romeo arias show her technical skills in coloratura, well done. Her Mozart, too, is wonderful, receiving praise from, of all people, Renata Scotto in her autobiography. Her Violetta is secure and rich with brilliant coloratura in the Sempre Libera section. Her Doretta is ok, with some odd breath points that should have been eliminated. The other Puccini sections are very special, showing what a superb Puccinian she is. She is a commanding Verdian in the Forza arias, but the acoustic is horrible. Her singing is worth it, though. The Aida items are intense and with long breaths. I just love her as Aida but the engineers did not capture her voice as richly as it was at that time. Still this is masterful singing of difficult music. Willow Song and Ave Maria are, in my mind, the best ever committed to disc. If you are not under her spell in these tracks, then you must be stone-hearted. My only regret is that her gorgeous Tu che le vanita from Don Carlos is not included here......a serious omission!!!!!
This is a great showcase for a supreme artist. Buy it.....you won't regret it!

5 out of 5 stars A great Don (except for the sound).......2007-06-27

I have to agree with the previous reviewer that as an operatic production, this recording is superb. The only downside is the sound quality, which probably could not be helped; one must simply take it on faith that EMI did their best to re-master the original tapes (though I feel that they may have overdone the bass parts in some places). The singers are superb, and you can hear the stage effects, which gives the recording a charming immediacy. Anyone who has only heard only modern recordings of the opera, which emphasize "period" instruments and tempos, should be warned that Furtwängler did not feel obliged to stick to any one particular set of tempi - he varies the speed quite a bit, even within particular numbers, but this reflects an overall aesthetic conception of the opera which he formed over many years (this recording was made in 1954, the year of his death) and which fits together perfectly in its own way.
Moreover, like the previous reviewer, I am glad that EMI is releasing this set for a reasonable price, and it is a good companion to the classic Giulini set (although I would recommend other versions of the opera as well - even some of the "period" interpretations).

5 out of 5 stars IT'S A GREAT ONE!.......2006-01-29

"Don Giovanni" is a very great, but difficult opera. It requires a charasmatic bass-baritone (or bass) for the title role, another equally great bass-baritone with a comic flair (for Leporello), two great leading sopranos for two very difficult roles (Donnas Anna and Elvira), a flawless lyric tenor (Don Octavio), and a pair of appealing younger singers for Zerlina and Massetto. It also doesn't hurt to have a sonorous Commandatore (a real bass)who can terrify Don Giovanni and take him to down at the end of the opera. This is an opera better left alone than presented even decently. The 1950's was a great time for Mozart singers, and many of them are right here on this live recording from Vienna in 1954. Cesere Siepi made the role of Don Giovanni his own and performed it many times (as well as on a commercial London recording which still is available). Elisabeth Schwarzkopf owned the role of Donna Elvira, and, in fact, can be heard on the EMI commercial recording made five years after this performance took place. Elisabeth Grummer was primarily a singer of the lighter Wagnerian roles, but her Donna Anna has power and passion. All of the other artists - Otto Edelmann, Erna Berger, Anton Dermota, Walter Berry, etc, were well known for their Mozart performances all through the decade. They mesh beautifully together in this performance, all under the exciting leadership of the legendary Wilhelm Furtwangler, who really finds the dramatic elements in this piece --- at the price of perhaps less emphasis on the lighter moments. Still, this is a towering performance, in excellent monophonic sound (yes, there are some stage noises, but no distortion or peaking). EMI has made it available at an incredibly low and wonderful price, and I can't see how anyone who loves Mozart would want to be without it under any circumstances. This is a great companion to the EMI Giulini set, and quite probably the superior of all the others.
It's a winner!

5 out of 5 stars Refreshing and Surprising!.......2006-11-24

I would strongly recommend this collection to anyone who is seeking a new approach and sound world for these Mozart operas. Ostman opts for brisk tempi and transparent textures, but hardly ever at the expense of characterization or expressivity. The singers respond to the challenge with performances that bristle with excitement and fun. The cast blends with the orchestra like a chamber music ensemble, inspiring the listener to experience the opera as a conversation between the text and the intimations expressed in Mozart's musically and psychologically penetrating orchestration. Occasionally one may miss the lyric line and warmth associated with such great Mozart conductors as Bruno Walter or Karl Bohm; but the brio, virtousity, and brilliant insights of Ostman compensate with different kinds of rewards. Also, there is an intimate atmosphere in these recordings that is most faithful to the ethos and meaning of the libretti themselves. After listening to this period approach, my understanding of Mozart has changed radically, and I continue to relish the challenge that these performances have given to my interpretative sensibilities.

5 out of 5 stars Some of the most thought-provoking recordings ever, combined with some of the most perfect performances I have ever heard........2005-09-14

First of all, I must state first that I was ANXIOUS to write this rave review. Ever since I got these cd's and realized the treause that is to be found in these recordings I just couldn't wait until I'd had the chance to tell everybody else about it... I honestly believe these recordings should be heard by anybody who is interested in this repertoire and music in general, since this are also some of the most perfect pieces of music in the repertoire.

As for the music itself, I am not going to write about. I think it is enough to read my last sentence to realize exactly what I think about it - and it is really just a must. That's composition taken to the highest possible level.

What I do want to write is about the performances.
Arnold Ostman, not the most known figure in the musical world, (not even amongst musicians- I come from Juilliard, and that name is definitely not one everybody knows) has created in the 80's in Mozart the equivalent of what Harnoncourt and Gardiner have done in Bach performance practice, i.e. has totally changed the conecption which was assimilated into everybody's mind regarding notions about how music of that era should sound like.

Trying to create a performance experience which emulates Mozart's period performance practice he changed everything starting from tempos, through ornamentation and of course- the voices themselves.

For us, most people indoctrinated by the post-romantisicm eastablished especially by Herbert von Karajan and the ilks of him, the first initial response will be a shock. The almost imperceptible swift tempos, the small voices etc. are sure to knock over anybody who haven't heard these recordings before. It might create an intial negative response but hang-on there, as the result is so much more gratifying then of hearing a recording of Karajan, Giulini, Furtwangler or any GREAT other conductor from that era- They were obviously incredible musical figures, but in terms of style and total perception of the piece it just doesn't work on the same level, in Mozart of course. (You'd still want to keep your Furtwangler's ninth copy...)

What is so great about Ostman is the freshness of mind with which he walks into every piece. Just like a real iconoclast
it seems as if he has landed from an entire different planet, and is just coming to conduct these pieces and give their debut. I can't give a more sincere and true compliment than that, musically speaking.

The results are the most fresh interpretations up to date of Mozart most important operas which also derive from some of the best vocal performances I have ever heard.
Under Ostman's direction it seems as though all the singers bloom and give their most musical and inspired performances,
holding on under the swiftest tempos in an admirable way. There is no point in pointing out names because it is as in a rule that the performances are just stellar one by one, even though not carrying around sometimes the most famous names.

This is not to say that all of the recordings in this set are equally perfect, and that I agree to all of the interprations and the insights given by Ostman, but you can't disregard the feeling that he knew EXACTLY what he wanted and executed it almost flawlessly. (the one exception might be small part of Cosi, mainly the overture, which was recorded very early in the stages of period instruments playing- therefore not always as perfect as you would have liked to hear it, but the performance as a whole is still the most beautiful Cosi I know.)

As for the packaging itself: The price is a complete steal, (incredible especially if you order it through other sellers, got mine for about 40$). What you DON'T get are the librettos, so you'd HAVE to get them from a different source. Either a different recording you might have, (you just might want one of the standard reference recordings one usually hears about like Giulini's) or you could just buy the librettos through Amazon, would still cost you very little.

Should not be missed by any terms by anybody who cares for music.

5 out of 5 stars Best ever!!.......2004-01-12

Ostman created a stir when he made these recordings in the 1980s. And now it available in a collectors' edition box. I'm so excited. Sumi Jo's Queen of the Night here is even better than her recording for Solti. Ostman's Don Giovanni is the fastest I've ever heard, not to mention the most exciting. This Cosi Fan Tutte is Gramophone's reference Cosi. And this Figaro has many "alternative" arias that other recordings never bother with. Don't worry, the alternative is at the back so you can program it out. In fact, this is the only set of Mozart operas with ALL the alternative arias available. Even Gardiner does not have some of these. So this is a supreme set of importance.

I cannot recommend this too highly. Exciting performances now available in Decca's collectors' edition.

3 out of 5 stars Wild Variations of Quality.......2006-12-15

While many selections on this disc are enjoyable, some are absolutely execrable. Leontyne Price's performance of "He shall feed his flock/Come unto him" from "Messiah" is almost unbearably embarrassing to listen to, as is Mirella Freni's horrible "O Mio Babbino Caro." Equally baffling is the choice of Renata Tebaldi's "Un bel di", when there are far better performances of it available. A late recording of Birgit Nilsson's "Komm, o Hoffnung" does not do justice either to her or to Beethoven. One wonders why there are multiple tracks of Joan Sutherland, Cheryl Studer, and Montserrat Caballe, yet equally fine singers such as Margaret Price, Luciana Serra, and Hildegard Behrens are unrepresented. Get a pair of earplugs before listening to June Anderson's off-pitch, shrill quacking, hooting, and shrieking rendition of "Glitter and Be Gay," surely a lowlight of the album.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2006-07-31

I picked up this cd at the library and it just blew me away! What a great collection! I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars A real winner with plenty of talent........2004-10-06

This 2-CD selection from Deutsche Grammophon, "Masters of the Voce, Soprano" follows a review we did earlier on the "Masters" series for tenors in which we rated the tenor package a success. This offering succeeds on multiple levels as well and proves to be an equally enjoyable listen. DG has put together 30 popular and diverse arias that not only give us a good sampling of some of the finest opera music being performed, but provides a sampling of some of the greatest operatic talent to sing those arias. We state at the outset that when reviewing a CD selection such as this, we don't set out to review the talent; the performers are first in their class and need only be acknowledged. Their work is neither new nor novel here. Rather, it is in the way the package is put together that earns either praise or criticisms - and no other. And that's what we offer here. First, with regard to the technical aspects of the recording: it is as you would expect from a digital transfer - smooth, clear and even throughout. This is a major plus when you consider that the performances were all recorded under differing circumstances, with different orchestras and choruses. Next, there is the selection of music. This can be tricky if not done well, but it was done well here and as a result gives us a pleasurable listening experience that offers continuity - meaning you don't have to sit with a clicker in hand waiting for that one cut that just seems out of place. There's none of that here; it's an enjoyable listen throughout. Lastly, but certainly not least, and what elevates this selection is the diversity of truly superstar singers. Joan Sutherland's lyric beauty truly shines when singing Rossini's "Bel raggio lusinghier" from "Semiramide" and "Ah, je veux vivre" from Gounod's "Romeo & Juliet", and the "Bell Song" from Delibes "Lakme". And it isn't just Sutherland's delivery that gets our attention. Brigit Nilsson's dramatic power in "Battle Cry" from Wagner's "Die Walkure" raises the hair on the back of ones neck. They're all here: Cheryl Studer, Kathleen Battle, Leontyne Price, Renee Fleming, Mirella Freni, Renata Tabaldi, Angela Gheorghu and more. Throughout, "Masters of the Voice: Soprano" offers a nice cross section from the lyric coloratura to the dramatic soprano, and a solid display of technical expertise in the way that the music is blended such that this 2 CD set can be added to anyone's collection with assurance that it will be enjoyed and listed to for years to come - and why not, it's some of the best.

3 out of 5 stars Really great, but there some strange choices.......2002-12-22

I will talk about the arias because choosing a singer depends on the personal taste. So, lets start from the very beginning - Callas and her fanous "Suicidio" - there is nothing to compare with her performance even the Caballe recording. I would gladly die after her final note. As for the "Addio del passato", for God's sake why Tebaldi - even Angela Gheorghiu is better, personally I would vote for Victoria de Los Angeles here.I agree that Caballe is a superb Mimi and somehow Hendricks isn't so captivating. As for Tosca's aria Malfitano is a goodlooking lady but then why not even Anna Moffo - if we have Price and Ricciarelli for Vissi d'arte or Kabaivanska. Terrani's Rosina is one of the best, as for the I Puritani polonaise here definitely Sutherland or Sills.Instead of Crespin I would choose de Los Angeles again. Janet Baker is a terrible Orfeo. Well buy it, nice compilation and some singers deserve the money.

4 out of 5 stars Diva-lightful.......2002-12-03

I heard this CD playing background music in second-hand bookstore and I HAD-TO-HAVE-IT. The shopkeeper couldn't tell me much about the CD except that it was called DIVA (she didn't have the cover anymore) and I knew full well that I was listening to the incomparable Dame Janet Baker singing "Che farò senza Euridice" from Gluck's Orfeo et Euridice, followed by someone else doing the famous Serse (Xerxes) Largo and an aria from Dido and Aeneas. So with that knowledge in hand, I searched Amazon.com and found this 2-CD set. And promptly purchased it.

Frankly, I adore this for the second CD alone, but there is lots to like on both CD's, such as some of my favorite divas among which are Lucia Popp, Montserrat Caballe, Fredericka von Stade and Dawn Upshaw. Some of the aria/artist choices are rather quirky; Dame Kiri Te Kanawa singing "Dich Teure Halle" instead of Birgit Nielsen; Marcella Pobbe singing "O Mio Babbino Caro" instead of Dame Kiri. Caballe not singing from La Boheme (I defy you to find a better Mimi than she) but doing Faust instead. And Sutherland and Sills are AWOL along with Nielsen--though maybe it was a case of not being able to obtain the copyrights rather than deliberate omission.

The selections here are well-chosen for variety and in the case of the bel canto selections on the second CD, they flow together so superbly, it's a real joy to hear. The only dark spot are the two arias done with the Zurich Symphony--and worse yet, they are with Lucia Popp (a huge favorite of mine) and Gruberova doing the Queen of the Night's nasty aria of extreme rage "Holle Rache". The orchestra drags in the Popp aria from "Clemenza de Tito", the dynamics are second-rate and Gruberova misses a note (not the wicked high ones but an amateurish note on an upscale.) Overall these are not the finest moments for either of these divas. That aside, there is lots to like on this CD if you overlook a couple of false notes.

3 out of 5 stars Young Opera Fan.......2002-07-22

Exactly what i was thinking. Sure these ladies are nice clear singers, but where was the Beverly Sills? Joan Sutherland? Birgit Nilsson? Being a HUGE admirer of the following I was rather shocked and disappointed to not see their arias on this c.d. Buy the c.d. knowing that it is incomplete yet still has some very nice singers-thus the 3 stars.

3 out of 5 stars who compiled these songs??.......2001-07-09

Seeing the great cover of this CD in the store with the promise of 30 great Prima Donna's was too good to be true. I can't understand why anyone would pick this compilation of artists and songs. There were some good points.. and a whole lot of bad ones too. They did have the good taste to put Maria Callas first w/ a great rendition of Suicido from La Gioconda. Unfortunately the very next song is the worst recording I've ever heard of Renata Tebaldi. Why they would choose to include a track of her singing La Traviata.. which was probably her worst role?? And lousy sound to boot. Very disappointing. I was amazed to see a few great Divas missing from this album. Where's Birgit Nilsson? Where's Beverly Sills? Where's Renata Scotto? and if they could include sumi jo.. where's Natalie Dessay?? Not only that.. it's as if they picked all of the songs worst suited for the artists presented? I recommend you skip this CD... at best you will get to hear a very differnt side of your favorite Divas as well as a whole bunch of artists who don't even deserve the title Diva.

Even if she wasn't game enough to wear a Columbia record in her hair (as pictured on the cover), Bidu Sayao had a voice that could make you forget Kathleen Battle. This Brazilian soubrette of the 1940s was as vocally lusterous and far more versatile, taking on heavier roles such as La Traviata and even an aria from Madame Butterfly with a gracious sense of style, passionate sense of character, well-placed high notes and an endearingly fallable coloratura technique. She's most at home in Marriage of Figaro arias from several different characters, but the sheer force of her personality carries her through the heavier stuff. Great sound for its time.--David Patrick Stearns

Amazon.com

For two decades, Bidu Sayou, the petite Brazilian soprano, won the devotion of Metropolitan Opera audiences for her bright, silvery sound, clear diction, and discreet passion. This well-transferred CD focuses on Italian-language roles, with the Debussy the sole exception. Sayou's Mozart is outstanding; her innately aristocratic style is perfectly suited to music, even in roles like Figaro's Countess, that would have been too heavy for her on stage. She's a heart-breaking Mimi in La Boheme, a convincing Violetta in Traviata, and even a moving Butterfly, just to cite some of the roles included here. And she gets fine support from accompanists that include Bruno Walter, Fausto Cleva, and Erich Leinsdorf. A treasurable CD! --Dan Davis

5 out of 5 stars A thing of beauty............2007-06-08

....is a joy forever. Since Madame Sayao sang her last notes more than 50 years ago, few will know her. That is truly sad...from the mid 1930's to the early 1950's, Bidu made the lyric soprano repertoire her own. Trained in Europe as the last student of the great Jean de Reszke, she combined a beautiful voice with a perfect technique. Bidu sang the whole lyric gamut, from Mozart to Puccini, but Violetta, Juliette, and Mimi were roles for the ages. To my mind, she remains the absolutely definitive Mimi....

In this absolutely wonderful collection, we get to hear arias from two of her three greatest roles, Juliette being found elsewhere. In addition, her Mozart sparkles, and the "Butterfly" and "Gianni Schicchi" selections will make your heart flutter. [OK, I know; Albanese was the definitive Butterfly...still...]. And, if that's not enough, the Debussy is worth the whole price.

Today, Bidu is a forgotten treasure to all but a few. Not just a great voice, but maybe the most gorgeous female ever to grace an Opera stage. God blessed her with beauty, talent, and length of days...she, in turn blessed us all. Sadly, she didn't record much...several Columbia albums in the 1940's. But, those show her absolute prime. When Bidu quit in 1952, she had the sense to stay quit. If you love great singing, do not fail to grab this. Maybe my vicarious crush shows in this review; that's OK; this was a singer, and this is an album, for the ages.

5 out of 5 stars GORGEOUS.......2007-05-13

I have rarely bought an album that I was so pleased with. This album ranks with Joan Sutherland's "Art of the Prima Donna." The engineering is superb, and Bidu Sayao is in magnificent voice on all of it. It would be worth the price if only for the "O mio babbino caro" and Musetta's waltz, which I have never heard done better, but all of the album is beautiful. She was one of the greatest sopranos of the twentieth century and this album will prove it to anyone but a total idiot.

5 out of 5 stars 1940's Gem.......2002-01-15

I have loved her voice since 1981 when I destroyed a Bidu Sayoa LP "French Songs and Arias" listening to it repeat for hours (Guess I could make a hat out of that record now).
I cannot add anything original to previous comments lauding her silvery tone or elegant. intelligent, brave, sophisticated, subtle, balanced sense of style. Emotion and control!
I would not normally have chosen a recording of the Debussy piece with its chorus and orchestration but am won over after several listens. I find her "Un bel di vedremo" refreshing and satisfying.
The liner notes insightfully outline her career; translated lyrics, for the Debussy piece at least, would have been welcome. Great sound quality with notes on sound transference technique from LP to CD.

5 out of 5 stars great singing by a legendary singer.......1999-08-06

This is a great CD by the lengendary Brazilian soprano, Bidu Sayao. A better performance of the Debussy does not exist even though it was recorded about 50 years ago. Sayao has not been surpassed. Also, the Mozart arias are a special treat as are the Bellini, Verdi, and Puccini. Sayao was a wonderful artist and very unique in her interpretations. This CD offers great singing and should be acquired by record collectors who value sensitivity, style, and voice qualities above and beyond the superficial. The tragedy is that Sayao was not recorded as frequently as she deserved -so what we have are limited treasures.
