5 out of 5 stars Shattering.......2006-05-26

Poulenc's Dialogues of Carmelites is nowhere near the tuneful, melodically-rich operas you've ever come across. It is largely set in recitative, and the orchestra sets the grim atmosphere of the whole work. As a whole, Dialogues is a really outstanding opera, full of atmosphere and grabs you with its mysterious charm. This recording, largely supervised by Poulenc himself during the recording sessions, definitely offers the perfect idiom of the work. Most of the voices cast in this recording are also the creators of their respective roles: Duval as Blanche, Gorr as Mere Marie, Crespin as Madame Lidoine...What you have here is not only an outstanding musical recording, but also a rare historical footage of immense power. All the voices on the recording are perfectly cast. The little known Duval gives here a wonderful portrayal of a fearful yet sensitive Blanche. Rita Gorr and Regine Crespin, caught here at an early stage of their careers, are in their usual prime, bringing not only their wonderful tones but also great insight into the characters. Dervaux's conducting is inspired and solid throughout. The supporting cast, all French and all good voices, all give memorable moments.
Dialogues des Carmelites has perhaps the most shattering final scene in operatic history: A chorus of nuns that gets diminished one by one at the sound of a guillotine. It literally numbs you and leaves you emotionally drained by the final pianissimo chord. Duval said that the challenge of singing Blanche in this Salva Regina scene is overwhelmingly difficult, since the singer has to overcome the emotions and sing a totally pure line over the grim atmosphere of the scene. It is perhaps also overwhelming for the listener. It is so real, so powerful that admittedly I don't dare to listen to it until I'm totally ready.
Dialogues des Carmelites, other than the wonderful music, also deals with social and psychological problems, among which are faith, life and death, community life and evolution. This recording has it all. A great recording of the century.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Mid-Twentieth Century's Greatest Operatic Works.......2006-05-07

I became interested in Poulenc's DIALOGUES des CARMELITES long before I heard a note of the opera. I was twelve or thirteen at the time and was looking something up in an encyclopedia and I came across the entry for opera. Glossy photographs accompanied the entry and a stark black and white photograph of singers dressed as nuns lying prostrate on the floor piqued my curiosity. I'm sure it was a number of years later before I ever heard a note of the opera itself, but that image has remained with me for many years and it may be a reason why the opera has fascinated me over the years.

The story of the opera is about a Carmelite convent that was suppressed during the French Revolution and its nuns, who resisted the order of suppression were martyred. The story has become part of French culture and it caught the attention of Francois Poulenc, a composer who had moderate success during his lifetime but up to that time had not composed anything that would outlive him. DIALOGUES turned out to be his masterpiece. The powerful music, with a lush and fluid sound, a far cry form much of what was written for the operatic stage in the 1950's, is aided by a powerful libretto written by none other than Georges Bernanos, the great French writer who had the literary talent to write a wonderful story and the an understanding of Catholicism and a spirituality that can only come from a person of authentic faith.

This recording was the first studio recording of the work and the cast includes some of the singers who performed in the work's premiere. Poulenc himself was also an advisor when the work was recorded, so perhaps this may be one of the few operatic recordings that we have that is true to the composer's intentions since the composer was involved in the recording. The cast includes one of opera's greatest voices, Regine Crespin as well as one of the best known mezzos of the French repertoire Rita Gorr. While the recording has been remastered, listeners will immediately notice it was first recorded in mono so it has an aged sound to it. Yet this should not be a deterrant because it has dramatic intensity. Very often I listen to opera while doing something else, and I will have to admit I can be working away as some of opera's most gory death scenes occur and barely notice. Yet whenever I listen DIALOGUES and hear the nuns sing "Salve Regina" and hear the chorus diminished one by one as the nuns are executed, and hear the guillotine (a percussion representation of the guillotine, of course) I always stop and pause. Even the total destruction of DIE GOTTERDAMMERUNG doesn't cause me to pause the way DIALOGUES can.

If your purchasing this recording, you may also want to consider reading M. Owen Lee's commentary on this work in his volume A SEASON OF OPERA FROM ORPHEUS TO ARIADNE. In this entry Fr. Lee combines all that makes this a wonderful opera.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Cd.... extremely thought provoking.......2006-01-31

I love this CD... Its almost hard to put into words how excellent of an artist Raphael Saadiq is. Each song as a unique flow and style, there's not a single song that doesn't have immense artist value. My favorite song on the cd is "Blind Man". The song is so, so deep. And if u can relate to the words, the meaning in any way... whether its on the surface, or deeper for some... it's just an awesome track, full of heart and sincerity. Raphael speaks to the Truth of music and Expression throughout this CD with perfection. It's a work of art and I'm very impressed. If u get the CD, I'm certain you will be impressed as well. Its music for the mind and u have to be in an appreciative state to embrace the vibe this CD puts out.

I just dusted this one off and remembered that I had not written a review for it but I couped the week it dropped. Saadiq himself is Instant Vintage. Since Toni, Tony, Tone he has matured while still maintaining his musical genius and classy style. This whole project is so eclectic, R & B, and HipHop all in one breath that you can't go wrong. Lyrics that make you think, react, feel. Every track is one that I can appreciate. They are all my favorites.

I instantly liked EVERY song on this cd and am glad to see that there are artists out there still making REAL music.

Raphael Saadiq sums up his 15-year career on this live double CD. An R&B connoisseur whose hitmaking days began long before anyone started tossing around the term "neo-soul," Saadiq brought not only his current band to the Hollywood club's stage but a number of guests including members of his former group Tony Toni Tone and the musically likeminded D'Angelo. The result is a sometimes languid, sometimes intense walk through material drawn largely from his 2002 solo debut Instant Vintage and the Tony catalog (the latter given satisfying but short playing time). While it's hard not to see All Hits as marking time for Saadiq, the discs do allow plenty of room for him to display his formidable talents as a singer, writer, and bandleader. Where much neo-soul tends to pleasantly blend into the atmosphere, Saadiq has enough melodic command--not to mention his sly sense of humor--to make this more than a showcase of technique. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars IF I COULD GIVE 10 STARS, I'D GIVE IT AN 11..........2005-04-10

Ok. Listen. This is arguably the greatest concert CD I've ever heard! This is TRULY INSTANT VINTAGE! I'm just gonna rant...The band is tight and very disciplined.

The Godfather of Neo Soul hit the mark one mo' 'gin.

Joi, KILLS "Missing You"...(Her CD <"Star Kitty's Revenge"> was kinda subpar, but she has a GREAT live voice!)

Ledisi RIPS it on "Different Times"

The Tonies were tight, and they NEED a reunion CD, dagnabbit!

Alan Leeds was the tour manager, the long-time tour manager for Prince and he was Maxwell's tour manager on his UHS tour...Leeds is one of the best in the business.

Raphael's command over his band is truly remniscent of Prince's command over his touring bands.

Best moment - When D'Angelo came out and duetted with Ray Ray on "Be Here" -- BOMB! I get goosebumps everytime I hear the crowd realize who's walking out on stage and lo and behold -- IT'S D' HIMSELF! Classic moment! And then D' proceeds to RIP IT UP! I love it! D', came back, big balla!

But, good people of Amazon, get this CD, it's well worth it.

5 out of 5 stars Instant Classic Live R&B Album.......2004-12-24

Amazing. I was a fan of Rapahel Saddiq when he was with the Tonys but didn't follow his career much after the group disbanded. A friend turned me on to this CD and now it is in constant rotation on my player. Without a doubt, one of the best live R&B albums I have ever heard. Saddiq has a way of letting the music just come out spontaneously and at the same time there's a gentle cohesion to the album, a direction you don't mind being guided in, even when one of your favorite songs ends. It just reminds you of Saddiq's immense, often unrecognized, talent as a performer and artist. The guest appearances are superb--Joi and Leslie Wilson especially. One of my all-time favorite albums and a great gift for any fan of the genre.

This double disc is awesome, well worth the price!!! My car's CD player is constantly playing disc #2. I love all the songs on it along with the majority of songs on disc #1. My favorites would be "Still Ray" and "Be Here". The climactic ending of "Be Here" with the guitar riffs, etc. is great and I love the musical arrangement and words of "Still Ray". Raphael knows his music and I hope the whole world gets a chance to know him, if they don't already.

4 out of 5 stars Lovin every minute of it.......2004-06-24

Raphael Saadiq has such a unique voice. It is cool, mello, smooth, and unforgettable. As soon as I got this CD I popped it into the car CD player and went straight to "ALL I ASK OF YOU" from the Higher learning movie. I then went to "Anniversary" and then from there I hit every track and every tune. Hearing this CD reminds me how much I miss the unique sound of the Tonys. The only problem I have with this CD was that listening to it made me wish I could have been at the House of Blues to hear it live.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Mr. Gould: the Genius of Recorded Music!.......2005-01-31

Gould was playing Schoenberg in the 1950s--just shortly after the composer's death. He realizes the Op. 11 pieces in a very late-Brahmsian manner, in keeping with his gestalt of turn-of-the-century Modern music, viz., Brahms, Strauss, Scriabin, Schoenberg, Hindemith, et al.

The Op. 25 Suite is an exquisite refraction of a Bach French Suite--but done in Schoenberg's 12-tone form. Here Gould plays Schoenberg as he does Bach!

Gould's realization of Schoenberg's Piano Concerto is very secco (dry), and intentionally miked very closely: i.e., the recording was made with microphones placed close to the performers, rather than way back out in the audience area of a hall. This was Gould's idea, and the results are outstanding: the best Schoenberg Piano Concerto available--pace, Uchida and Brendel, et al.

Gould's Pierrot is his first attempt at conducting, and one wishes he had completed it and done more. In the end, Gould conducted Wagner's Siegfried Idyll with outstanding results.

This is a great set.

5 out of 5 stars The definitive interpretation of Schoenberg piano works.......2003-12-27

While other pianists dabbled at these fine pieces, none other than Glenn Gould provides the definitive interpretation of Schoenberg's piano works. Thoroughly studied, Gould presents the serialism clearly and presents the dimensions of the revolutionary works.

By detaching yourself from the tonality of traditional tonal music, and immersing in the world of Schoenberg, the shape and lines of the music will gradually become clear. Gould is perhaps the greatest advocate and messenger of Schoenberg's distinct language.

5 out of 5 stars Keep listening.......2000-09-13

These are difficult pieces for me. They require concentrated listening, and challenge my understanding of music. Sometimes, I don't like what I hear, and other times, it's just too much work to listen to very much of this. However, when I am able to devote some time to listening with an understanding mind, I am amply rewarded. I have listened to this CD for several years and I will probably never understand this music. I do enjoy listening and learning from it, though. I am thankful that someone as talented as Glenn Gould has interpreted these pieces. If you are interested in one of the most important composers of the twentieth century, or one of the greatest legends of the keyboard, this CD will interest you. To paraphrase what Moby wrote on his CD, Animal Rights, "Please listen to this CD completely at least once."

4 out of 5 stars The "least dry" Schoenberg ever.......1999-11-10

I believe wholeheartedly that, for the uninitiated, this disc is difficult to truly appreciate without having heard other pianists attempt these pieces (e.g., Pollini). To enjoy listening to Schoenberg necessitates a certain familiarity with prolonged "dissonance", just like strong coffee or unfiltered beer--it takes some getting used to. If you're already there, it's not "dissonant", it's "music" (just like other alternate melodic conceptions-raga, gamelan, mbira, partch, etc.), and Gould's passionate readings here display his love for and understanding of the music's heart. Go Glenn.

4 out of 5 stars A Master Pianist Plays His Favorites.......1999-04-08

Schoenberg's rigid mathematics, his triads, his serialism, his tonal abilities, when demonstated through his piano pieces (especially through these piano pieces) allow a pianist with the mechanical ability and inspired play of Glenn Gould the chance to demonstrate how to hear, feel and convey a music that, to many listeners, often reflects, upon fist listen, chaos. But the music on this 2 CD set is not to be listened to merely once. Glenn Gould, master pianist, is playing his favorite works by one of his favorite composers. The Schoenberg basher will hear more chaos than in other recordings of these piano pieces, merely because Gould's sure fingers, his hands, are as revolutionary as the music he is playing.

5 out of 5 stars Ne partons pas fâchés..........2006-11-22

His voice and his words are a perfect mix of so many ingredients: both naive and sage, raw and gentle, compassionate and mocking, delivering heartbreak and betraying a broken heart. Returning from France this summer, I heard "Schengen" on the plane, and from the very first second I was hooked. It's a light, airy, Manu Chao-giddy tune that becomes addictive immediately. Having bought the album and giving it its first few spins, I was astounded by Raphael's range of styles. So many elements, so many inflections. When I heard "Chanson pour Patrick Dewaere," I thought, "wow, it's Jeff Buckley, only actually French!" Then there were moments that were positively Bowie-esque. Russian gypsy airs, appropriately accompanying "Caravane." The playful insouciance of "Ne partons pas faches," which resonates in the quieter, more thoughtful, yet equally optimistic "Et dans 150 ans" and "C'est bon aujourd'hui," and is transformed into introspective contemplation in "Les routes de nuit." An unselfconscious generosity of spirit and compassion permeates every song. Can't wait to hear more. *** UPDATE*** Hotel de l'univers is rougher, but equally fascinating.

5 out of 5 stars Je pense à toi depuis mille ans............2006-07-31

Oh mon Dieu!! quel beau! what can i say about raphael....well i love his music and just everything about him. It was just last month when i visited France that i heard his music. Schengen!! oh my God the French love this song it was on the radio like every ten minutes!! and of course you can't help loving this song, nor the artist. His music and the lyrics are so beautiful and full of life; whenever i hear his music it reminds me of France et je vis encore!! I just love Raphael what else can i say. Je lui aime, il est le mieux et duh le plus beau!!

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2006-04-22

This CD is amazing and so is Raphael. His voice blended with the music is a wonderful combination that will make anyone appreciate him. I would recommend buying this CD and I can't wait to own the rest of his albums.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2006-04-14

This is a beautiful album, both well-produced yet raw at the same time. I found this album a few weeks ago and it was the first I have heard of Raphael.

I don't understand any of the lyrics since I don't know French, yet the music, melodies, instrumentation locked me in either way.

I've been searching for translated lyrics for Caravane to no avail. If anyone has English translations of Caravane, please send them my way. My E-mail is: cashiado@yahoo.com

If you like music with romantic style, grace, instrumentation, and melodies, you'll enjoy this album.

5 out of 5 stars cette musique je l'aime beaucoup.......2005-10-22

I love this CD. Having only listened to it once so far, I would say the best songs are "Caravane", "Ne partons pas fâchés", and "Peut-être a-t-il rêvé". Normally artists don't remind me of other artists, but when I listened to "Peut-être a-t-il rêvé" it actually reminded me of Rufus Wainwright, whose music I also enjoy.
The only song on the CD that I don't really like is "Funambule", which is an instrumental and quite repetitive. I agree with others that Raphael's lyrics are a central focus of his songs, so to have a song without any lyrics kind of made me sad.
That being said, the rest of the album is strong, so I still give it 5 stars.
Also, you can enjoy this music without knowing French, but I think you'll enjoy it more if you understand the lyrics. If you don't know any French you can always Google the lyrics to get a basic idea of what the songs are about.

5 out of 5 stars Delightful.......2006-12-31

I've bought other alubums of mandolin and guitar and enjoyed them, but this is my favorite. All the selections are enjoyable.

The blend and balance between Baldassari's mandolin and Mock's guitar are the best I've ever heard on any recording of mandolin and guitar recordings.

I wasn't sure how a bluegrass mandolin player would do on classical pieces, but Baldassari is more than equal to the task in my opinion. He chose to play his Gibson F-5 and F-5C mandolins and could not have made a better choice. He produces the best tone I've ever heard from any mandolin; full, rich and balanced. Any limitations inherent in the mandolin are not to be heard; nothing tinny, nothing hollow, just pure golden tone.

John Mock's guitar playing blends seamlessly with Baldassari's mandolin.

I'm a cassual listener to classical music. I enjoy what I enjoy, but I'm not tutored or schooled. All I know is that I like what I like. This is good stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Gould and the Juilliard produce a one-of-a-kind performance.......2006-06-18

Despite reported friction at the 1968 recording session, Gould and the Juilliard Quartet made beautiful music together. Gould was notoriously difficult to collaborate with, and both parties went their separate ways, happy not to meet again. But the ear detects not the slightest disharmony or difference of opinion (pace the two reviewers below who fantasize a strong clash of personalities). Their Schumann Quartet is light and lyrical, with a tender tone from both the strings and piano. The Vivace finale is taken quite fast, and Gould's precise touch makes the counterpoint sound like Bach. Five stars.

The Brahms Piano Quintet comes from a (mono) radio broadcast in 1957. Again there was reported friction, and it does seem that the strings pull one way and Gould another at times. But it doesn't matter. Gould's tempo is weirdly fast in the second movement, his pointed, detache touch is completely foreign to Brahms, and the Montreal Quartet are no great shakes. A reading to delight Gould's fans and their love of his idiosyncracies. Otherwise, a miss.

    5 out of 5 stars excellent teamwork.......2004-11-06

I think, this is one of the best recordings of Brahms Piano Quintet. This work is one of the best and most famous chamber work of Brahms and it is a huge work like a symphony written for quintet. Even so, the work to be constitued in a typic symphony form-4 movements. And it's musical language typical Brahms; a Scandinavian atmosphere, somewhere heavy, stormy and cold, but somewhere lyric and warm... And it's performance is really good. It's one of Glenn Gould's first succesful recording (made n 1957 in a CBC broadcast) with his historic 1955 Goldberg Var.. And also, Montreal String Quartet is very good and they are fell and bringing the typic character of Brahms. Schumann's recording is very good, too but I think, the star of this CD is Brahms.

Highly recommended for a really good chamber music recording.

5 out of 5 stars Thank God for the difference.......2002-09-27

Wow, this recording sticks out in a wonderful way. I have three other recordings of the Schumann and two of the Bhrahms, but this one is my new favourite. More than a team-play, it sounds like a battle between Gould's way and Julliard's way. Excentricity and genius vs. superb workmanship and bravura.
A must have, but you might want to start with a more accessible interpretation if you aren't a Schumann buff.

5 out of 5 stars the most charming unhorthodox performance I've ever heard.......2000-10-16

This Schumann quartet recording is the most fascinating little piece I've ever heard. Obviously Glenn Gould and the Julliard String quartet did not get along very well when they recorded the thing - it is clearly perceptible in the recording. But this awesome contrast is completely fascinating. Is my favorite recording of the Schumann quartet. A must buy!

Raphael (no last name) was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and raised by Benedictine nuns. Under their tutelage and encouragement, he developed a love for music, first learning about classical music and Gregorian chant. As a young man, after playing gypsy violin on the streets and utilizing his talents in rock bands, Raphael studied the piano formally at the San Francisco Conservatory. He later spent a decade at Esalen, the renowned Northern California spiritual community. It was during his time there that he began to blend his various influences, draw from multiple cultures for compositional inspiration, and forge his signature style of healing and relaxation music. Originally issued in 1989, Music To Disappear In was his first recording for the label Hearts of Space. A bit dated by this juncture, these nine songs, all original compositions but for the traditional opener ("Disappearing Into You"), use piano and keyboards as a central voice, creating a lulling web of atmospheric string sounds complemented by flute and percussion. Long used by body workers, Music To Disappear In is the very definition of New Age relaxation music. --Paige La Grone

If you don't want to be relaxed don't listen to this CD! It's a wonderful prescription for the spirit.

    5 out of 5 stars Beautifully relaxing.......2004-11-30

I have been having insomnia for a few weeks, and this disk, specially track 2 "In Paradiso" is awesome. I programmed my CD . player to just play it over and over, it is so relaxing I actually sleep, in spite of all kinds of problems (try sleeping with a stuffed nose in a sitting position!) It was so bad I wore it off (hard to believe, isn't it?). I will buy the album again, just for that song!

5 out of 5 stars Music of my soul........2002-11-18

This CD is the most awsome musical source I've ever known. I am a pianist and guitarist and have tried to reach this plateau myself and not come so close. The music in it actually touched emotions I didn't know I had. I fealt a peace and tranquility I've never known. When my time comes, this is the music I want to leave this world hearing. Side 1 Track 1, Disappearng into You, is the song of my soul and life. I don't know if the artist has known pain or sorrow like I have but the connection is unreal and welcome. This is a good investment and well worth the time to enjoy. Turn down the lights, light a fire, cuddle up with the one you love and let this artist touch your soul.

    5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2002-11-04

I heard this album when it first came out and it still thrills me. It's just plain BEAUTIFUL, relaxing music. Lay down on the floor, spread your arms wide and drift away..... it truly IS music to disappear in.........

    3 out of 5 stars Can't seem to disappear.......2000-05-25

I can't imagine meditating or getting a message to this music. It is very heavy on the angelic chorus and shrill strings. Then fluxuates to a Mr. Rogers sounding theme. It sounds very dated and the tracks do not flow well into one another.

Excellent performance and high quality recording. Arrived in great shape and in a very short time. I'm quite pleased.

5 out of 5 stars Another winner in the Vivaldi cello series.......2005-12-12

This is volume 1 of a 4-volume set on the Naxos label comprising all of Vivaldi's 27 cello concertos. I have only heard volumes 1 and 2, so cannot fairly evaluate 3 and 4 yet, but I can tell you that the first two volumes are terrific performances of this wonderful music. Vivaldi was very inventive in writing these, so they never seem repetitive, and the good blend of tempos keeps them from seeming either too hurried or too sedate. Raphael Wallfisch on solo cello performs with enthusiasm and precision, yet always tastefully in accord with how the music was written. The recording quality is very good too, warm and well-balanced. If you trust the writers of the Penguin Guide as I do to rate classical recordings, they sum up their attitude to all 4 volumes of these recordings with the statement: "a remarkable achievement, standing very high in the Vivaldi discography," and give their very highest "Rosette" rating to volume 3.

5 out of 5 stars Masterful performances of gorgeous pieces........1999-02-16

All four volumes of these twenty-seven Vivaldi cello concerti are masterfully and sensitively performed. The style of Vivaldi pours through the flawless playing of both the orchestra and soloists. The tempi chosen for each movement seem to bring out the most in the music--never too slow and never too fast. Although all four volumes are beautiful, the second volume contains prime examples of Vivaldi's style--that relentlessly tense and elegant rush. The Double Cello Concerto in G minor, RV 531, recalls the urgency of Vivaldi's first movement in his "Winter" concerto, except here, two cellos perfectly contending with the orchestra give this piece more material and substance to listen to. The slow movement that follows is gorgeous, giving way to the relatively joyful ending. On the same volume, the Concerto in C minor, RV 401, also gives a beautiful glimpse at Vivaldi's unmistakable style. The works in the other three volumes do not really match the intensity and delicacy of the pieces in the second volume--especially the double cello concerto; however, all four volumes, each at such a humble price, are golden additions to the collection of those who love Vivaldi's music.
