Sweet southern soul-jazz from Memphis-born Crawford.......2003-01-15

This is the kind of comforting soul-jazz that's perfect for listening to while driving through Georgia or the Carolinas. Hank's rich, warm tone is like a balm for the soul. Texan Melvin Sparks flowing blues lines righteously affirm the leader's solo statements. Louisianan Dr. John's piano and organ provide a lush backdrop. Another Texan, "Fathead" Newman, joins three other supporting players to form a horn-section that Crawford arranged to counterpoint his statements on yet another Texan's composition, "Funny" by Willie Nelson. "Pretty" Purdie and Wilbur Bascomb provide solid footing for the tunes, which are mid-tempo blues and ballads. Nothing frenetic here, just relaxed grooving. Y'all come back now!

The idiot from Virginia thought it a bit strange that an American black man would give the communists a chance. Looking back from modern perspective is easier than what he had to go on in the thirtes. Gee, I wonder why a black man would do that after all that southern hospitality, segregation, and steady work you gave the "black folk". Not to mention all those nighttime campfires you had going in their honor.
While I might be from New York I certainly would not be called a bleeding heart liberal but I can certainly understand why the poor soul was looking elsewhere. You are either ignorant of history and its influences on people or you are a totally unsympathetic jackass!!

A let down.......2004-09-24

I own several Robeson recordings and purchased this one with high hopes as it has a great selection of tracks. Unfortunately given the excellent recording quality of "Songs for Free Men" and "The Paul Robeson Oddyssey", the remasters from what I assume are 78's and possibly radio are a let down and mar what could have been an excellent album.

The definitive Paul Robeson compilation.......2003-09-19

This 2 CD set of Paul Robeson is the definitive collection providing a decent overview of his work in 50 tracks all wonderfully restored from 78s as usual for ASV, with spirituals, show tunes, Shakespeare-like readings, and more done with a trademark bass voice and orchestration that backs up Paul perfectly and he would later be one of the first civil rights activists. The first disc is a reissue of the single disc "Ol' Man River-His 25 Greatest" on ASV containing "Ol' Man River," "Mighty Like a Rose," "Joshua Fit De Battle Ob Jericho," "Carry Me Back To Green Pastures," "Lazy Bones," and many more classics which is also available here at Amazon for those who only want a single disc of Paul's work and the 2nd disc contains 25 more classics including "Nobody Knows The Trouble I've Seen," "The Old Folks At Home," "My Old Kentucky Home," "Wagon Wheels," "Git On Board, Little Children," and many more. In other words, all 50 of these tracks are essential to any early pop, folk, gospel, blues, etc. music fan and this is the set to introduce yourself to his work in a convenient 2 CD package with the usual great liner notes and details on the original 78s ASV provides with each CD released in their Living Era series.

Lightning Does Strike Twice.......2007-04-01

I remember vividly hearing Lightning Slim on a black station in St. Louis, Mo. in 1958. In those days, the dee-jays would talk more and tell you about the artist. Well Dave Dixon introduced me to Lightning Slim. It was instant karma. His raw delta Blues style was so different than what I was listening to on the white stations. Lighting's music got me started going to the black clubs where you could hear guys like Albert King and some of the better known artists. As time passed, I couldn't find anything by Lightning Slim, everybody thought I meant "Lightning Hopkins." So exasperating. Anyway this compilation takes me back to those days in the early 60s in those smokey blues clubs. Fantastic. In particular, I loved his "talk" to the Brits. They probably didn't know what was going on. He really talks to me on "Mama....," "G. I. Slim," and especially his rendition of "The Sky is Crying"...so different than most versions. He mixes harmonica, slide guitar, with guitar and drums and has a real blues band backing him. If you want to experience a rare club performance like it was in the 60s...jump on this one...Lightning Slim doesn't get the noterity of some of the bigger names...but this cat is pure Mississippi mud oozing through your toes...let it squish around will you listen to a rare talent and a rare live recording. What you waitin on...buy it now! Joliet Jayke The Bluze Brother gives this one a 5 Star Rating!!!! Nuff said.

Blue Lightnin'=True Lightnin'!.......1999-04-26

If I had only heard the one song on this album, Lightnins' rendition of Jimmy Reeds'; "Caress Me Baby", that song alone would have made me buy this album!He is playing on stage in London, in the early '70s, and is backed up by one oustanding band! The harp player, is nothing short of excellent, with a capital E, and Lightnins' little asides between the songs, make you feel like you know the guy. This is not one of these "sessions", where the blues singer goes overseas and is playing with a bunch of rock musicians, but rather a live performance, in a theatre in London, UK.I can't get enough of the harp on "Caress Me Baby", words like stratospheric, and astral, come to mind!You owe it to yourself to try this one. Flawless recording of an ultra-rare Lightnin' Slim live performance! You can't beat it with a stick!!!

Yet Another Excellent New Year's Day VPO Concert.......2005-04-27

This year's concert was devoted almost exclusively to music by Johann Strauss II. Without question, it is among the Vienna Philharmonic's best New Year's Concerts, led by a long-time collaborator at the podium, American conductor Lorin Maazel, who has conducted the orchestra since the early 1960s. The orchestra responded enthusiastically to him, following his tempi even when he wasn't conducting (In two works he plays violin solos, most notably the "Tales from the Vienna Woods" waltz.). On a somber note, the traditional final piece of the concert, Johann Strauss' Radetzky March was not played, a silent tribute offered to the victims of the December 26th earthquake and tsunami in the Indian Ocean (However, the other traditional encore, the "Blue Danube" waltz was played.). Fans of both the Vienna Philharmonic and Lorin Maazel will be interested in acquiring this CD.

Tremendous in the Dobly 5.1 surround sound. Great ballet to the Blue Danube waltz. Maazel does some violin solos on the Tales from the Vienna Woods

uninspiring compilation.......2000-06-21

It's a compliation, which likely means you will enjoy some cuts and not others. The ride from one artist to the next is not perfectly smooth; the artists are varied and there's too little of each one to fully engage the listener -- just when you start getting into one style, one voice, you're shifted to something quite different.

Any music aficionado would be better off listening to a full CD by each artist. The individual pieces here are merely okay, and I say that even about the ones by artists I really like. A few cuts are entirely forgettable, and the good ones can be had just as good or better on other CDs.

Overall there's more slow and melancholy than upbeat and happy on this CD.

Good stuff!.......2000-04-28

This edition of the Fab Six does a great job of interpreting some of the works of Strauss. They include pieces that were written with a text as well as adding texts to other pieces. The instrumentalists -- Meyer, Barrueco, and Hortnagel -- add to the vivacity of this CD. Good luck finding it, though, as it has been out of print for some time!

Along the same lines of two earlier releases, "Blue Counterpoint" and "Suspended Animation," Cullen's "Indigo Blue" soothes the fingerstyle fan while deftly dodging the cliches of "newage" guitar. Anyone "in the know" will recognize his influences as they appear on the record--Towner, Metheny, and a heavy dose of blues and soul--add resonance to the tunes. While I might not choose this over "One Night, One Guitar" as my introduction to Cullen, if you like Ed Gerhard, Bill Mize, and the better Wil Ackerman stuff, give this album a listen. With a ton of tunes recorded over just a few days at Ackerman's VT studio, this album finds a mellow corner of the listener's mind and makes camp.

I listened to this CD one evening while I was reading and couldn't believe how beautifully peaceful the sounds. David Cullen definitely has a way with the guitar that simply amazes me. His music is not over-bearing or intrusive, it's like a warm gentle breeze wafting through air. My favorite song on this CD is "Good to see you". This CD is just too yummy for words.

When you hear David Cullens' music, words like amazing,warm and sensitive come to mind. Having had the pleasure of working with David,I can say that he will not disappoint! His style and delivery will keep listener's coming back for more.I think that both of his CD's are extraordinary and highly recomend them both although "Indigo Blue" is my favorite of the two.

I can't imagine any guitar fan not loving this album...in fact, any lover of the quieter end of the music spectrum should be thrilled. It's a recording of all originals, recorded solo, with references to jazz, folk, classical, new age and pop stylings without falling easily into any one of them. While his writing is beautiful, it's Cullen's playing, exquisite, but always in the service of the music, that carries the day for me. There's a weird sort of joyous bittersweetness to the compositions, that drew me in from the first notes. Enjoy this one!
