A poetry of paintress!.......2007-08-03

The name of Enrique Granados will always be associated with to that tragic episode that defined his life in 1916.

But his musical bequeath will always be estimated by the rest of the world who will be able to enjoy the delirious, captivating and engaging inspiration produced by Goyescas, a heartfelt homage to Francisco de Goya, one of the most prominent and genuine Ambassadors of the Spanish painting.

IN this sense, this suite for piano is frame by frame a sumptuous and posthumous tribute, keeping into account the repressed lyricism of the Spanish lyric.

Pitifully, there have not been so many successful recordings that may be regarded as memorable, because somehow elude the elusive gaze, the historical perspective and the Mediterranean poetry nestled bellow the score.

To my view, there are two versions worthy to regard; the extraordinary and now almost forgotten performances of Rena Kyriakou and the best known version of Alicia de la Rocha, who understood faithfully the dynamics of the work.

Beautiful..........2002-06-01

Alicia de Larrocha is one of those pianists whose mastery in certain repertoire is unparalleled, and mostly unchallenged. Even though her recordings of mozart, schumann, are always well poised and balanced, her mastery of the Spanish repertoire is such that her other acheivements stand small in comparison. This is repertoire that she has recorded more than once, and i for one am grateful that she chose to go through the Granados Goyescas for a second time (her first trial was in the 60's for EMI). In this new recording, she is more concentrated on tone, sound, and overall relationship of one work to another rather than on the virtuosity necessary to pull these works off convingcingly. So, for once, you hear these works played as almost one - with some pervasive melodies haunting more than one work and all necessary to form the group the composer intended.
Larrocha will always be remembered for recordings such as this where everything falls into place so naturally that the piano becomes a breathing instrument. This is trademark of a selected few indeed.

Not so great Granados from Alicia.......2000-02-24

Alicia De Larrocha's earlier recordings of this music (on EMI and London) must surely rank as some of the greatest piano playing ever recorded, especially her Goyescas and other works of Granados which she made in the late 1960's (the EMI recordings), when she was at the peak of her playing.

However, on this present recording it's pretty clear what has been apparent to me for some time now: her age is affecting her abilites and she just can't play with the same mastery or ease. Though her technique is still more or less secure, the playing sounds just a tad bit erratic in places. "El Fandango del Candil", the concluding piece "El Pelele", as well as the "Allegro de Concierto" are nowhere near as brilliantly played as they are on her earlier recordings. And "Danza Lenta" sounds ponderous.

Having said that, the playing is still has its attractive qualities and, as always with her, is musical.

The piano sound, however, is awful: thin, hard in tone, with no resonance or acoustic glow (compare, for example, the sound Phillips produces for Uchida in her Schubert recordings).

If you love Spanish classical music, you're better off with her earlier recordings.

Narciso Yepes is my favorite classical guitarist. I was delighted to hear a couple guitar concertos I had never heard before. Ohana, Bacarisse, and Ruiz-Pipo were great discoveries. Again, Yepes is the BEST. Strongly recommended.

The late Narciso Yepes is perhaps my favorite guitarist- Spanish or otherwse. With each of his recordings there is the sense of a madman, master, and poet at one with his instrument. I recently purchased "Guitarra espagnola" and have found endless enjoyment listening critically and as background while I work. This is the perfect "not background music" background music to play when you have guests. You and your guests will find yourself withdrawing from lively conversations to enjoy a poignant, sweet, or sinister moment with the music. This is a compilation of recordings from the past 20 to 30 years. The compositions span from the 17th to 20th century. The quality of the recordings is very good but at times varied. The availability of the compilation is very limited. Get it while you can! I also recommend Alirio Diaz and John Williams.

I cannot recommend this retrospective of just a small amount of Yepes's work highly enough.

No matter what popular and lay opinions may be about Williams, Bream, Segovia, and others, the greatest classical guitarist of the 20th century was Narciso Yepes. It is a pity and a shame that the fear of the older generation of guitarists and their associates made Yepes a marginal figure.

He was a consummate technician and a knowledgeable interpreter of all musical idioms from the Middle Ages through to the height of the 20th Century avant-garde. His playing was characterized by intelligence, sensibility, clarity, power, majesty, poetry, and a devilish ability to separate and sustain contrapuntal lines.

In this box of 5 CDs you will find the definitive performance of Rodrigo's now famous "Aranjuez" concerto, which, incidentally, was first recorded and made famous by Yepes. There are also 2 CDs with rare concertos by Salvador Bacarisse, Antonio Ruiz-Pipo, and Maurice Ohana.

The other 3 CD's contain generally the best performances of the canon of solo guitar works that you are likely to find. The composers include Sanz, Mudarra, Narvaez, Soler, Sor, Albeniz, Granados, Tarrega, De Falla, Turina, Bacarisse, Rodrigo, Llobet, Pujol, Moreno Torroba, Montsalvatge, Ohana, and Ruiz-Pipo.

Every guitarist and every lover of the instrument should own this set. If it is not available, also refer to a similar box set with the ASIN number B00006L6RN or another B000026ZRL.

I bought this 4 cd set under the title Gitarra Espanola for about fifteen dollars more used than under its correct title Guitarra Espanola. It and the individual four volumes are out of stock. Volume 1 Sanz, Soler and Sor are pretty good. Volume 2 Albeniz, Granados, Tarrega, De Falla, and Turina are more the Spanish or Classical guitar I am used to from the likes of Romero, Williams, and Villa Lobos.
Volume 3 has the first recording of Joaaquin Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjeuz from 1947. My seller said that volume 3 was defective though it was just the recording capability of 1947.
Salvador Bararisse, another Twentieth Century composer for the guitar, was thrilling. Antonio Ruiz-Pipo challenged me. He was born in 1933.
There is a volume 5 with Joaquiln Rodrigo: Fantasia para un Gentilhombre/Concierto Madrigal for 2 Guitars & Orchestra/Marurice Ohana: Concerto Three Designs for Guitar & Orchestra that I will try to get used or new as it is also out of stock. These are way high in the Amazon Sales Rankings, but for a retrospecitive of the 10-string guitarist who died in 1997, this will do.

Strange interpretation of "classical".......2005-01-17

I bought this CD because it contained some songs I was having a hard time finding elsewhere, such as Passo pel prat, Chants d'Auvergne sung by Fredrica Von Stade. However, some of the songs on this CD do not seem to belong e.g. all three songs by John Williams, Mack the Knife, Barbra Streisand, and the Psycho Murder Theme for starters, and many more.

I gave the CD 4 stars only because I was happy that I was able to find a few somewhat rare tracks.

An interesting mix..........2002-05-18

This is a sampler in the truest meaning of the word. I bought this 4 CD work primarly for two tracks, but also because I was interested to see what else was out there without investing a fortune in CD's I wouldn't like! I was surprised by the wide diversity of music ranging from true classical and jazz to contemporary compositions and interpretations.

While I find some tracks divine (Williams's _Schindler's List_), I find other tracks unsettling (_Beau Soir_ performed by Barbra Streisand). But when you are trying to span 100 years of music, you will (and should) encounter all tastes and styles. Overall, I really enjoy listening to this set. My only regret is that I don't have a CD changer...

Clasicos de las Americas has Good Gottschalk.......2004-02-23

This six CD set has the Central and South American greats, but I prefer the North American who did some of his best composition South of the border. Louis-Moreau Gottschalk had the life of a modern day Rock Star. He is joined in this set by such prominent players as Heitor Villa-Lobos, George Gershwin, Augustin Barrios, and Carlos Guastavino. George Rabol is a favorite pianist.
