"UHP! I'M AN IDIOT.".......2007-04-16
The last time I went home to Los Angeles - (You remember, I told you THAT story in my review for the Huffy Good Vibrations Men's 24-Inch Cruiser Bike. Are you paying attention here, or not?) - I called the BITTER BROTHERS and arranged a "Bitter Breakfast." That's a meeting where a bunch of us macho fellas - er, I mean, "Men" - get together to blow off steam over quiche and champagne. Uhm, that is, over Huevos Rancheros and strong, black coffee. (Let's be honest, the "blowing off steam" part could just as easily be called "Male Gossip", but . . . well, you know, I've faked a pretty good masculine facade for myself at Ammyland up to this point, and I'd hate to see it all go to ruin now.)
So, me an' my Bitter Bros were expressing our bitterness at The Sidewalk Café on Venice Beach one morning (perhaps the definitive "L.A. Experience") and observing the Frisbee-catching dogs, the rays-catching one-eighth dressed roller-skating babes, and the usual Carnival of Human Freaks parading past the Café, when I noticed this young cat playing some pretty fancy guitar over yonder. My soul emptied of its bitterness, and my glass emptied of its champa - my cup emptied of its coffee - I went to talk to the young cat and learned that he was a Russian bloke named VADIM, and I bought one of his self-produced compact discs. ["Vadim #1"; vadimrecords at yahoo dot com, or (310) 801-4212]
Well, I eventually just went crazy for track three: "Bossa-Nova." And having heard the term about a zazillion times (that's a lot!), I decided I simply must find out just what BOSSA NOVA really is. So I did an internet search and what I learned is that I have been in love with Bossa Nova music for pretty much my entire life without ever knowing it. {*He's a tad slow, folks, but give him four and a half decades and he'll figure it out.*}
You see, as a young kid in the early and mid-1960s, when the Bossa Nova craze was at its zenith, my Grandpa used to play it around his house. My Ma had an 8-Track tape (yeah, I'm bitter AND old, OK?) containing the gorgeously haunting song "The Shadow Of Your Smile." I loved it, and the song still makes me think of her. Wait a second. . . . . {*"Macho fellas" don't get teary-eyed, Stephen!*} . . . . Sorry. OK. Then later, in my mid-20s, I owned the classic Jazz album "Getz/Gilberto" on licorice pizza (that's LP, not 8-Track!) and I played the hell out of it (well, I would have if there had been any hell in it), falling in love with the beautiful saudade in Astrud Gilberto's voice. (Saudade? Look it up on Wikipedia.) Only Karen Carpenter's voice was infused with more, and - in my op - the standard ballads by Bobby Darin are the only example of Saudade in a male voice. (Despite the jocular exterior, my entire life is one of Saudade, but I don't know you well enough to tell you more.)
Then love came to me again in the form of Pat Metheny's three brilliant Brazilian-influenced albums, "The First Circle", "Still Life Talking", and "Letter From Home." About the same time, I owned a Cannonball Adderley album that included "Clouds" and "Morning Of The Carnival" and they were my favorite cuts, but I couldn't have told you why exactly. I also loved Vince Guaraldi's "Cast Your Fate To The Wind" from his "Jazz Impressions Of Black Orpheus" album, but the Bossa Nova connection eluded me. And when my Good Friend Melanie gave me Angelique Kidjo's "Black Ivory Soul" recording, I loved it immediately from the first few notes down to the very last ones, and I rarely embrace new music that quickly. But I still hadn't made the Bossa Nova Connection. It took a Russian cat playing Brazilian music on Venice Beach to make this American dude finally realize that the thread running through it all has always been Bossa Nova, and that Bossa Nova is the thing I dig! Hey, it required only 43 years for me to piece it all together; I'm just a mental dynamo! {*"Uhp! He's an idiot."*}
So, I just bought "BOSSA NOVA FOR LOVERS", and here's my assessment of each of its 16 tracks:
1. VIVO SONHANDO: Classic! I remember this one from my Getz/Gilberto album. Stan was one of the first major Jazz cats I got into.
2. WAVE: Wow! I've just learned that Antonio Carlos Jobim is the musician who transformed Samba into Bossa Nova.
3. THE SHADOW OF YOUR SMILE: [Sniffle! Sniffle!] I want Astrud to sing this one at my funeral.
4. CORCOVADO: Not the version from the Getz/Gilberto set, but nice guitar from Almeida, and Getz really plays that tenor sax! {*Yeah, but can he pitch?*}
5. MY FOOLISH HEART: Marry me, Astrud! I promise I can learn to behave myself!
6. AMOR EM PAZ: Sheesh! Talk about Saudade. Love it!
7. MISTY ROSES: Makes me misty. Astrud, play Misty for me.
8. DESAFINADO: Jobim is the Boss of Nova.
9. SO NICE (SUMMER SAMBA): Oh, gee, I swear, I melt. One of my very favorite tracks. Too short! More! More!
10. WINTER MOON: "Winter" warms my heart. "Great Getz!"
11. INSENSATEZ: Well, let's face it, along with "The Girl From Ipanema", this is the face of Bossa Nova.
12. DINDI: Astrud sings. What else ya need to know?
13. BAHIA: Cool!
14. THE GIRL FROM IPANEMA: I prefer the version with Getz and Astrud, of course, but great melody regardless.
15. O GRANDE AMOR: Beautiful!
16. MEDITATION: I dunno; let me contemplate it further.
I see that I used the word "love" seven times in this review. I don't ordinarily use that kind of language, but the collection IS called "BOSSA NOVA FOR LOVERS", and I guess I'm a lover after all. {*Nah. He's an idiot.*}

Album Description
Doris Day's biggest hit, 'Sentimental Journey' was recorded while she was a vocalist in Les Brown's band in the mid-1940s. Highlights from these two original albums on one compact disc include 'Fly Me To The Moon' and 'The More I See You.' (Collectables)Customer Reviews:
Classic 1965 recordings.......2007-01-13
Simply Timeless.......2005-03-09
One word is all I need: Beautiful!.......2004-06-25
Most of Doris Day's big hits were in the 1950s; this CD represents a Doris Day of about 10 years later. It is a combination of two LPs which she recorded two months apart in 1964 and Columbia released (the second-recorded one first!) in 1965. So it's a slightly more mature Doris Day, but just as nice to listen to as the Doris of the 1950s.
The two LPs combined in this CD are actually two quite different sets of tunes. "Doris Day's Sentimental Journey" consists of a collection of songs that were old standards even in 1964, plus a remake of her very first hit, the title tune of the album, done in a rather different style from the 1940s version. "Latin for Lovers" contains a number of songs that were mostly fairly new in 1964 (some of which might be called standards now!) with Latin origins. (Some were composed by the man who introduced the bossa nova to the USA, Antonio Carlos Jobim.) Only one of the songs on "Latin for Lovers" was one I'd heard Doris do: "Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps" ("Quizas, Quizas, Quizas" in the original Spanish). All the songs on both LPs, now on one CD, reminded me of why I've always considered Doris my favorite singer; every single one is done beautifully.
What more can I say? Of course it gets 5 stars! I wish I could give it six!
Voice without peers.......2003-06-25
Then in Amsterdam I found some great soundtracks with old works from Henry Mancini.Next to his works was some this rather shy album of Doris Day.
When I heard her interpretation of * Three coins in the fountain & Quiet nights of quiet stars *,I couldn't believe my ears. Her voice has such profound timbre with such grade delicacy of
the acoustic instrument, one just brought to life by finest artisan alive. Her voice is so vibrant and resonant like any voice I have heard before.
I asked my friends at my home to listen some music on my system and I asked them who is finest female voice on the planet? Some said Billie Holiday , Ella Fitzgerald....list goes on.
With some reservation I said for me it is from now on Doris Day.
Needles to say that made them laugh until they have heard sheer delicacy of her voice.
Without any reservation, with experience in classical music and Jazz, her voice is among finest voices, period. It is a great pity that she didn't extend range of her materials more into demanding materials of Jazz standards. I'm scare to think what kind of the treat that would be.
Her voice is like a finest High-End audio instrument, depending only on quality of material. If you treat the same with care it will reward you with delight. Ribbon speaker owners and those with generally fine systems, listen for these two songs on
this album. It will define you standards, what can you expect in human voice. In this case. exquisite, profound and unique voice of Doris Day.
In today mediocrity of quality in almost every sphere of human awareness, let her voice remind you that some things posses a true substance.
Doris recorded great albums while the Beatles took over USA.......2003-06-01
The album begins with The more I see you. Originally an American hit for Dick Haymes, Chris Montez had an international hit with his cover in the sixties. I remember you was originally a top ten hit for Jimmy Dorsey but Frank Ifield had a huge sixties hit with it around the world, going to the very top of the UK charts. At last and Serenade in blue were popularised by Glenn Miller. Among the other songs here, you can listen to covers of Come to baby do (another song Doris originally recorded with Les Brown), I'll never smile again (Tommy Dorsey), I'm beginning to see the light (Harry James), It could happen to you (Jo Stafford) and It's been a long long time, which topped the 1945 charts in America via two different versions (Bing Crosby, Harry James).
The second album on this twofer, Latin for lovers, recorded in 1963, features a mix of standards and songs of Latin origin, all given a gentle bossa nova rhythm. On Be mine tonight, Doris actually sings a verse in Spanish - the only time she ever did that. Of the standards, Fly me to the moon and Our day will come are the best known. One of the Latin songs, Perhaps perhaps perhaps (a translation of Quizas quizas quizas) became popular in the UK as a consequence of its use in a TV commercial. This is an excellent album that sets its own mood.
Doris could not compete with the Beatles for sales, although she continued to record albums of the highest quality - and they have stood the test of time.
In the UK, these two albums were issued on separate twofers - Sentimental journey was coupled with What every girl should know, while Latin for lovers was coupled with Love him.

I love it and I give it as a gift.......2006-12-11
I know snobs rage against popularizing classical music, but everyone deserves exposure to the beauty of song. I will also mention here "The East Village Opera Company" because they work to popularize opera by setting it to a rock beat. They do a fine job but also get criticized for attempting to popularize classical music.
"The Best Choral Album in the World...Ever" was so popular with my teen-age daughter that it was hard to get it back from her. I give the album as a gift to nephews and nieces.
MarMSED.......2005-08-27
Diverse range but the songs are butchered..........2005-07-24
The peices are well-performed for the most part, but they are hopelessly edited. Beethoven's Ode to Joy is somewhere around twenty four minutes, but this CD only includes an arrangement of about five minutes. The beautiful Miserere is, uncut, almost eleven minutes but is cut down to five and a half minutes here.
Looking back, I should have realized the major editing that would be involved, just by the sheer number of peices on it. I'm familiar with a great many of them and I know they're too long to fit onto a seventy minute disc without some major cutting going on. I just didn't reason that out before I shelled out the money for it.
Bottom line. This CD has decent singing, but is nothing special. If you're a newcomer to this genre, you might get this as a quick overview of the different types of choral music out there, but if you're any kind of an avid listener, this CD will drive you insane with the severity of the cuts. Beginners, if you're looking for a great collection CD, you'd do better to look at "Choral Moods". It doesn't have the diversity in styles of this one, but it will introduce you to incredibly talented composers. To the old hats out there, steer clear of this one and look to CD's by your preferred individual composers themselves. It's more money, but much less frustration in the long run. The old sayings are sometimes the best: You get what you pay for.

From the first glourious strains of Al Caiola's guitar and strings, your heart will be swept along and completely captivated. Mr. Caiola has never been more brillant in his masterful guitar performance, or his superb arrangements of truly beautiful music. This recording is the highlight of his long, illustrious, and successful career. A brilliant, assortment of romantic latin music, played with the magical touch of Al Caiola on guitar. Al Caiola's remarkable talent is at its very best when bathing these latin ballads with his string arrangements and his ever-golden guitar. The pristine clarity, and the warm, splendid mix of Al's unique sound and performance, make for moments of enchanting listening.Customer Reviews:
Sensual "take me away" music!.......2007-04-17
orchestrations flow like silk while the Latin rhythms sway you like a
warm tropical breeze. It reminds me of dancing under a starry, velvety
night sky on the terrace of a little cantina in Manzanillo, Mexico one
summer night. Unforgettable!
I'm Not Italian But I Love It!.......2006-08-20
Starting with track 1, "Be True to Me (Sabor a Mi)" passing true track 5, "Magic Is the Moonlight (Te Quiero Dijiste)", 12 "Morning of the Carnival (Manhã de Carnaval)", 16 "One (Uno)"; all just a PLEASURE to listen to. Al Caiola's guitar playing is phenomenal. I absolutely recommend it. This one really deserves a five stars ratings.
I also recommend his album "Italian Gold - Treasured Collection", another SUPERB Five stars.
Oh, Al!.......2002-09-07
In the early 1970's I worked with a 'Salsa' band. I was hired because I played piano, organ, and accordian.
Sabor a Mi was popular on the latin radio stations, and I learned it from an early recording. Later, I learned other music, all latin or soft jazz from listening to keyboard players, but I also listened to Al Caiola. He has thrilled audiences with his guitar. He's a true stylist. You can listen to him, and you will know who's playing. He is very distinctive, and has both the technical skills and the natural talent to make his recordings interesting and beautiful. If you've never heard Mr. Caiola play, then do yourself a favor and buy this CD. It is lovely, it's romantic! Oh, Al!

Perhaps the Best "Two-Fer" Ever!.......2006-07-08
Percy Faith is simply "the" orchestral artist who could consistently take the popular songs of the sixties, for example, and present them as a veritable symphony! You do not have to be a "Percy Faith lover" to thoroughly enjoy these masterfully beautiful recordings; just a music lover, folks.
His treatments of the Lenny Welch hit, "Since I Fell For You," Bobby Vee's "Forget Him," and Dionne Warwick's "Anyone Who had a Heart" are indeed symphonic, and his renditions of "The Lonely Bull" and "Spanish Harlem" are the best versions ever!
Simply put, this is one of those rare collections that easily justify at least six stars!!
"Antonio Carlos Jobim & Percy Faith arrangments".......2003-07-02
Over an hour of stand outs ~ "ANYONE WHO HAD A HEART", "WIVES AND LOVERS" and "BLUE ON BLUE", three great standards by the composing team of Hal David and Burt Bacharach ~ "UM, UM, UM, UM, UM, UM", the great Curtis Mayfield tune with highlights of plunking strings and percussion. Might make mention the track "JUDY", composed by Percy Faith, later came out as "Christmas Is", became a wonderful Holiday Classic we hear during the Christmas Season.
Let's take a trip down to South America with "THE LONELY BULL", a Sol Lake composition originally was made a hit by Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass, but listen to this brilliant arrangement by Percy and picture the countryside as you listen to the hovering strings ~ "ONE NOTE SAMBA", "HOW INSENSITIVE (INSENSATAEZ)", "NO MORE BLUES (CHEGA DE SAUDADE)", "QUIET NIGHTS OF QUIET STARS (CORCOVADO)", "SOMEONE TO LIGHT UP MY LIFE (SE TODOS FOSSEM IGUAIS A VOCE)" and "THE GIRL FROM IPANEMA (GAROTA DE IPANEMA)"all composed by Antonio Carlos Jobim reaching new heights and all because of the performances of Percy and the guys in his fabulous orchestra ~ gotta love it!

good.More Themes contains such music as You Don't Own Me,
I'll Take You Home,Judy(which sounds like a instrumental
version of Christmas Is)and my favorite Forget Him as well
as Blue On Blue,Icecicles and popsicles,Sugar Shack and others.
Latins Themes contains Spanish Eyes,Something to remember her
by,One Note Samba,Theirs always something to remind me and more.
Liner notes for either albums arn't included and it's a shame
because I also have both of these on lp as well and the lps
have the notes. The cd it self sounds great. The sound is clear
and pristine with stereo sound on More Themes.Latin Themes
for some reason isn't as loud meaning you may have to turn
the volume up a little but it still sounds good with stereo.
You can tell a slight difference in sound between
the first and second album when you get to the second.
I'm glad collectibes finally decided to release these
albums on cd and now that I have them I'm hoping to see
American Seranade released sometimes this year, this album
is similer to Shangri la meaning it is very lushly orchestrated
with heavy strings.
