5 out of 5 stars Linda or Lola?.......2007-05-26

Who is a better ranchera singer, Linda Ronstadt or Lola Beltrán? Lola has a deeper voice, but both can certainly belt out a song! It's hard to say who is better. It's like choosing between Pavarotti and Plácido Domingo.

The sad fact, though, is that the fidelity of most of Lola's albums is very low...they sound like they were recorded on a home tape recorder. And since she has now passed away, there will never be any new recordings.

Linda Ronstadt, has done it agian. Very good music you can join your friends around a fire and just enjoy her songs for hours.

5 out of 5 stars Authentic Mexican.......2005-03-10

Original Review 9 March 2005

I am not a Mexican, but I have circulated for years in the Mexican parts of Los Angeles, and I have travelled throughout Mexico, enjoying the native musicians on street corners and in parks and cafes. I have always wondered about those who praise Lola Beltran as the "great" Mexican singer. She sounds too urbane and too international to me--in the manner of Catarina Valente. I always thought the real spirit of Mexican music was better represented by such as Las Hermanas de Alba. And now Linda Ronstadt carries on the true Mexican tradition in her later work. Whatever else she may have sung in her career, I find in Linda's Mexican singing the authentic flavor of Old Mexico.

Update 17 May 2006

Last night as I was browsing the reviews of this record, I got curious about the various comparisons to Lola Beltran. Not having listened to Lola for quite some time, I went through a stack of stuff from both Linda and Lola to refresh my ear.

My conclusion. Lola is good, but Linda is better.

Linda has a much broader emotional range. With all of her musical excelence, Lola has a dreadful sameness from song to song--even songs which should be handled quite differently. For example, It is quite disconcerting to hear Lola back to back on "Ya No" and "Me equivoque contigo"--songs which should be very different in emotional tone sound all too similar. As it happens, I heard the latter song on the radio a few days ago by a male artist. His rendition shoots Lola's down the drain.

By contrast, Linda's emotional range is both subtle and immense. For example, from her "Tata Dios," which wrenches me to tears every time I hear it, to the mock seriousness of her "El toro relajo," which is always worth a good laugh. After reviewing a batch of Lola's work this morning, I can't imagine her ever having such an effect on me. Lola still strikes me as a city person trying to sing country. Whatever else Linda may have done in her life, she somehow manages to dig her toes into the true country soil of Old Mexico.

Viva Linda!

5 out of 5 stars Let the sun shine in..........2005-01-13

I don't know the first thing about the "authentic" style of this music, the native singers, or if Linda has the correct spanish phrasing... All I know is that when I play this CD, a little bit of sunshine enters my gray Philadelphia winter days, and it makes me want to do a bit of dancing! (And I'm sure my dancing isn't the least bit "authentic"...) Plain and simple, this CD is just a lot of fun.

5 out of 5 stars MAS CANCIONES.......2004-09-02

THIS IS A WONDERFUL CD, I ALSO HAVE HER FIRST CD CALLED CANCIONES DE MI PADRE, BOTH ARE GREAT. SONGS . I AM A MARIACHI FAN. IAM ALSO MEXICAN AND LINDA SINGS GREAT IN SPANISH. I TOTALLY DISAGREE WITH ANYONE THAT SAYS ANY DIFFRENT. WE HAVE ALOT OF SPANISH (MEXICAN ) SINGERS. THAT CALL THEMSELF SINGERS AND DONT EVEN COME CLOSE TO THEY WAY LINDA SINGS. I HAVE PLAYED THIS CD AT PARTYS AND MY FRIENDS AND FAMILY WANT TO KNOW WHO SHE IS, THEY LOVE HER SINGING AND THEY LOVE THE SONGS THAT WERE SELECTED.

5 out of 5 stars A great complation album from Ricardo Montaner!.......2002-08-21

Ricardo Montaner's best songs from his earlier works are on this CD, and they are all great to listen too, including "Yo Que Te Amé", "Tan Enamorados", "Vamos A Dejarlo", "Será", "Vamos Pa' la Conga", "Ojos Negros", "Déjame Llorar", and "Un Mundo Ideal", plus the rest which are just as great. Montaner also wrote almost all the songs and his writing skills for music are just as good as his voice. You can't find a better complation album from a great Latin artist.

He escuchado a muchos cds mexicanos y latinas, pero -MAS- es el mejor del mundo. Las canciones me hacen feliz cuando estoy solitaria. Cualquiera diciendo que ese -MAS- es basura está loca y desechar a sí mismo.

      5 out of 5 stars amazing.......2004-01-17

Alejandro Sanz is not a singer, he is a poet, the musical structures he writes are absolute amazing (and I ought to know, since being a musician myself) but besides his impressive musical arrangements and production, what cautivated me the most are his abosolutelly amazing lyrics. Alejandro Sanz's vision of the world is very unique, the way he interprets what's around him, from "corazon partio" where he explains how it feels to have a broken heart, to "siempre es de noche" where he feels throught the heart of a blind man in love, it is simply outstanding.
Great work from one of the most talented singer-songwriter of our time.

5 out of 5 stars Alejandrito, siempre excelente.......2003-08-15

I would consider this cd as one of my favorites. Actually I love all of Alejandro's cd's. In this one you'll find excellent tracks like: "Y, Si Fuera Ella" "Corazón Partio" "Amiga Mia" & "Si Hay Dios", I consider those 4 tracks the best of the whole album, but all the other tracks are also great. Trust me this cd is worth buying.

      5 out of 5 stars Fenomeno.......2003-05-28

If there's 1 CD that a true music lover needs for listening pleasure, you just landed on your jackpot. This CD is filled from beginning to end. No track on this CD is worth skipping. From his Worlwide smash hit "Corazon Partido" to Si hay Dios". Truely a great musician, truely a great CD, Truely the Best Buy.

3 out of 5 stars Funky enough, but not heavy enough!!.......2001-11-14

Just picked up Infectious Grooves most recent album Mas Borracho and, I must say, it wasn't what I expected. The thing that made the first three albums so special was the delicate mixture of heavy rockin' riffs and clean guitars, with an explosive, funky bassline!!! Borracho has its moments, but not enough the make it a truly great CD like the others. Previous songs like, "Do the Sinister", "These Freaks are Here To Party", and "Why?" had this classic combination I really miss on this new album. Maybe, after a few more spins through the CD player, I might truly appreciate and love this new sound like the others. It might take some time to get used to, but I'm sure it will grow on me.

4 out of 5 stars Back to Funky Form!.......2001-02-13

After the heavy and exceedingly violent "Groove Family Cyco", I thought for sure that the IG's had wandered too far into the same territory occupied by many of today's angry rap-metal bands, unfortunately. I'd always thought that IG was an outlet for the Suicidal Tendencies bunch to explore different ideas, musically and thematically. I was stoked upon listening to their latest CD, "Mas Borracho", that they have returned to the funky, often humorous form of their 1st (and my favorite) album, "The Plague That Makes Your Booty Move".

The new stuff is just amazingly fun to listen or thrash to. "Mas Borracho" rocks, funks and blows you away with superlative musicianship, in your face bass, dualing heavy and jangling guitars, and a great new drummer. Bassist Robert Trujillo truly deserves as much recognition as Flea or Les Claypool for being an absolute master of the bass guitar. The lyrical content of the songs is a journey in itself, but the mood created is much more uplifting, less heavy and dark than "Groove Family". I applaud Mike Muir, Robert Trujillo, Dean Pleasants, and company on producing a sonically awesome and truly enjoyable CD.

All in all, this disc gets 4 stars ("The Plague That Makes Your Booty Move" is hard to beat at 5 stars - Get that CD if you can find it!) Essential listening if you're a fan of the thrash/funk rock genre. Peace!

5 out of 5 stars FUNK and Talent abound.......2000-11-16

This new release of the Infectious grooves abandons the themes of death and metal/thrash and exploits the talents of Robert Trujillo. A Bass guitar expert currently touring with Ozzy Osbourne. The songs are upbeat and fun to listen to. The mix of Muir's vocals, Trujillo on Bass and Adam Sigel on guitar are mixed perfectly and make the cd very enjoyable.

      5 out of 5 stars Funk Fest 2000 !!!.......2000-09-13

3 words: BUY THIS ALBUM!!! These guys (Suicidal Tendencies in disguise) have outdone themselves again! This album, Mas Borracho, lets me reminisce they days of the old Red Hot Chili Peppers' albums like Freaky Styley. They even threw in keyboards on a couple of songs! If you like slap bass and wah wah guitar this album, which is almost pure funk, is for you. The older Infectious Grooves albums which are also cool, had a little bit of a harder edge to them (like the new Suicidal Tendencies Album, Free Your Soul and Save My Mind). I love it all. Hopefully Cyco Miko and gang get all the recognition they deserve!!!

The young duo Francisco Saldana and Victor Cabrera once worked at Harvard University as a chef and a dishwasher, respectively--but that was before they began remixing, redefining, and revolutionizing the burgeoning reggaeton movement. Talk about a Cinderella story: Known collectively as Luny Tunes, the pair has assembled a first-rate posse of stars for Mas Flow 2, the follow-up to 2003's first installment. Luny Tunes have been called reggaeton's answer to hip-pop producers the Neptunes, and Mas Flow 2 goes a long way towards justifying the comparison. High-wattage stars Daddy Yankee, Ivy Queen, Vico-C and Tego Calderon make appearances throughout the two-disc collection, and lesser-known artists are also highlighted. Even Frankie J pops up for a charged-up remix of his pop hit, "Obsession." The jerky beats of reggaeton can get a bit repetitive, but Luny Tunes add enough flavor to keep the hips swaying throughout the disc's 20-plus tracks. --Joey Guerra

I'm just starting to add Reggaeton to my playlist. I like it on the radio, but the style of the CD seemed to get old after the first half dozen. Too hard all the way through. Would have been nicer if it was broken up with some soft or smoother stuff here and there. I liked about 3 or 4 of the songs on the album. Go Ivy Queen!

Mas Flow 2 has a couple of the greatest reggaeton songs out there, and there are a lot. Luny Tunes know what they're doing and they get all the best artists - Daddy Yankee of course, Tego, Wisin y Yandel and so many more. "Rakata" is one of the best, but "Mayor Que Yo" is by far my favorite reggaeton song. "Verme" is also extremely catchy and the "Mirame" remix is amazing. If you love reggaeton or are just becoming interested in it, either way this should definitly be part of your collection.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best reggaeton CDs out there........2006-07-13

A reviewer stated this is a compilation of Puerto Rican artists. That's because Reggaeton is Dance Hall Reggae in spanish and is a style of music originated in PR. If it's not from the island, it's probably not Reggaeton but spanish rap. On the island there are some very popular DJs who work with every top act on the island. The best DJs are Luny Tunes and Noriega. This album, the other Mas Flow and their album with Noriega are some of the best reggaeton albums you can ever buy. If your new to Reggaeton and you want to try some out, you won't go wrong with this album.

5 out of 5 stars Mas Flow Dos, Might be the Best Reggaeton CD thus far.......2006-06-24

Track #1 Intro: Just like the title of the track, it's just an intro, nothing more nothing less.

Track #2 Rakata: A big hit in the latin clubs, first time you hear it, makes you want to dance. Great song to start off the album with. Great hip-hop feeling to it.

Track #3 El Tiburon: Another great dance hit from the duo producers Luny Tunes. Alexis and Baby Ranks make a great duo on this song. Sort of a Merengue and hip-hop feeling to it.

Track #4 Dale Castigo: Great song to dance along with also big in the clubs.

Track #5 Mirame: A great song from Daddy Yankee mixed with the Hindi-singing of Deevani. The ultimate song as far as mixing genres is concerned, with the mashing of Hip-Hop, Spanish(Cumbia/Merengue/Salsa), Reggae and Indian Music. A very popular song in the underground.

Track #7 Mayor Que Yo: Great song to dance along with. A song about being older than your girlfriend.

Track #10 Sobale El Pelo: Short but good song to listen to.

Track #11 Te He Querido, Te He Llorado: Probably the biggest hit from Ivy Queen thus far. Very popular on the Radio and Dance Floors, even though it's sad admission of a bad relationship. The beats keep you dancing despite the lyrics being a downer. Song is about a bad relationship, the title means "I've loved you and I've cried for you."

Track #12 Mirame 2 Version: Only thing remixed on this version is the addition of Tego's verse's.

Track #13 Dejala Volar: Another great song about a bad relationship.

Track #15 Tortura: A funky little song, great for couples to dance in the clubs.

The rest of the cd is good too, but I honestly feel the rest of the songs are fillers. In other words, they are good songs just not as good as the ones I've listed. Still the best Reggaeton Compilation CD thus far.

5 out of 5 stars ESSENTIAL TO ANY REGGAETON COLLECTION.......2005-12-20

The Los Lobos fan might reasonably ask what--besides length and a wonderful accompanying booklet--Más y Más has over 1993's two-CD Just Another Band from East L.A.. The answer is longwinded: here are album tracks (anywhere from four to eight from each studio album), outtakes, demos, and live cuts, as well as selections from tribute albums, soundtracks, and side projects. Some highlights that weren't on the earlier collection include a 1983 rockabilly sizzler, "We're Gonna Rock," the similarly charged "Rip It Up" (an '87 outtake from La Bamba), Richard Thompson's "Down Where the Drunkards Roll" (from the '94 tribute Beat the Retreat), a live take on the Beatles' "Tomorrow Never Knows" (from a '93 television tribute), "Route 90" (from the pristine Lobos children's collection, Papa's Dream), and a '97 live version of Marvin Gaye's "What's Goin' On" with Sheryl Crow guesting on vocals. This doesn't even take into account the songs from six soundtracks and a personal fave, "Alone in a Crowd" (from I Only Wrote This Song for You: A Tribute to Johnny Thunders) and a fab take on Doug Sahm's "She's About a Mover" from '96. This and more pushes Más y Más out of the group of multi-CD boxes devoted to defunct artists and into the camp of justly deserved career overviews created while the subjects are still in full flight. --Andrew Bartlett

....just another band...this gracious and generous box not only covers the rocking, fertile ground plowed by the "Just Another Band from East L.A." double, but also includes hearty samplings from their more modern, experimental, avant-garde-y era...I'm more of a fan of the earlier, more rootsy stuff, like "I got loaded" and "How will the wolf survive", but still, the latter era has its moments, like the gorgeous and seductive, "Kiko"...so, it's all here...

Combine that with great extras and covers like "What's Going On" and "Tomorrow Never Knows", and it adds up to a first-rate collection and a must for the roots rock fan.

      5 out of 5 stars A true musical gem!!!.......2002-12-18

EL CANCIONERO is without a doubt one of the best box sets to be released in a long time. We have over 80 songs that stretch from the very beginnings of LOS LOBOS until the present day. If you listen to these songs, you will soon find that there is alot more to this great band than just LA BAMBA. While that song is included here, it is overshadowed by the great songs that this band has consistenly made. We have all the hits from the group: ONE TIME ONE NIGHT, WILL THE WOLF SURVIVE?, SET ME FREE (ROSA LEE), THIS TIME. We are also treated to songs from the various side projects and solo albums that the group members have worked on. If this isnt enough of an incentive to buy this set, how about unreleased tracks and tracks from various soundtracks and tribute albums. You get everything you could possibly want from this band and then some. I highly suggest that you go out and get this set. You will not be disappointed, I'm not

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Box Set.......2002-09-15

I'll make this short and sweet, because this box set (CD4, track 12) is playing and the music is just too good to pass by and waste my time writing stuff... I only knew these guys from the "La Bamba" movie and took the dive into unknown territory. It was certainly worthwile, this is one of the most rewarding box sets out there, this band is so creative, passionate, original, daring, captivating. To tell the truth, I never thought I'd hear a band in the nineties that could make me change my mind that all good music stopped by the end of the 70's. If I ever get a chance in seeing them live in Belgium, I'm there. Wow!

      5 out of 5 stars A blazing paradigm of a collection..........2001-03-09

Since its early Winter release, this has been on my turntable, I mean CD player more than anything else. An amazing collection that shows the vastness of the Los Lobos legacy. Their beautiful Spanish tunes along with wonderfully written intricut Rock Music. Their own style is added to cover tunes and their splinter groups push the envelope even further. Just saw them live at the Fillmore in San Francisco and they have become a mixture of all the great live dance bands bringing their hight sprited originallity to American Music. Buy this collection now!

Last weekend, I loaded these four CDs into my car's deck and drove from DC to New York. The drive was an absolute joy. This set is a continuing series of wonderful surprises. If you haven't really listened to these guys before (I hadn't), buy this and be prepared to smile a lot.

I bought this album specifically for the song "Amigo Bronco" and "Oro." You may tell that I am an English-speaking white Panda fan. However, giving the other songs a chance I am really impressed. Check out the song "Sergio El Bailador" by Los Claxons.
