Toad on the Road.......2007-02-04
Toad The Wet Sprocket were riding at their peak when this concert took place. "Fear" became their biggest seller and the top forty welcomed "All I Want" and "Walk On The Ocean." This being a homecoming concert, both the band and their Santa Barbara fans were stoked, and the show comes off as a hero's welcome.
The band has always been underrated, and the compositions here (from the first three albums) show a lot of strength. Glen Phillips' gifts as a song-writer have never been truly recognized. While he (and the band, who co-wrote the majority of the material) did cultivate a folkish and, even at a certain level, mellow sound, there is a dark streak to many of their best songs. "One Little Girl" and "Hold Her Down" are unflinching takes on abuse, while "I Will Not Take These Things For Granted" may be the most beautiful song to never hit the top-40. They were also not shy from experimenting, as "Butterflies" shows. (Love the Beatles quote at the end!)
All in all, "Welcome Home: Live" shows Toad The Wet Sprocket in full gale as a band. A band that toughed it out through years on the road and a couple of poorly selling albums to develop the chemistry and the tenacity that they were still there when the lucky break occurred. Along with the "P.S." best of collection, this CD is a terrific representation of the band at their toadiest. Incidentally, Phillip's post-toad solo work is quite good. Check it out.
It's live Toad, what else do you need to know?.......2005-12-06
Oh man, what a gem for fans. This live disc from 1992 is nearly flawless. It does only draw from the first three albums, but that's exactly why I love it. It has numerous songs from both their debut and my favorite album "Pale", and roughly half the disc is from "Fear", which is their hit-heavy and most popular album. Plus this is 19 tracks and 74 minutes long. The songs stick to the originals for the most part, but being live gives them a nice fresh sound. Glen speaks at a few points, but keeps to jamming for the most part. I really have no complaints with the tracklist, but in a perfect world this would also include "Covered In Roses" and "High On A Riverbed". Still, it's an excellent live record, and a must for Toad-heads.
The definitive Toad album for their long-time fans........2005-04-08
I don't know how else to put it. This album is amazing. It captures Toad at their best, when it comes to live performances. It's a shame these guys didn't get more recognition.. they much more than deserved it.
Anyway, as I said, this is the boys at their best. Everything is spot on. Every song sounds just as good as their studio counterparts, and some are even better. The emotion and musicianship put into each song are unparalleled by almost any of today's top bands.
If you are a bigger fan of Toad's later works (Dulcinea and Coil sessions), you may not enjoy this as much, since this was a performance from 92. Naturally, it encompasses their first 3 albums. You might want give the samples a good listen or 2 before you decide on making this purchase.
But if you are a long time fan, and/or if you enjoy their early albums, you MUST BUY THIS NOW!! It is that good. I bought it about a month ago, and it is has never left my cd changer since...
This is the Toad album I have been waiting for.
Great live show from one of rocks's most overlooked bands.......2005-03-31
Finally, a live CD from Toad the Wet Sprocket. It's about time! And it surely doesn't disappoint. This band never got half the credit or recognition they deserved. But this CD is one treat for those of us who were fortunate enough to follow them throughout the years. My only complaint is that "Good Intentions" is not here. But that's all right. The outstanding quality of the album as a whole speaks for itself, and is reason enough to get this. If you're new to Toad the Wet Sprocket, I would recommend getting their studio albums first and then picking up this one. And for the long-time fan, get this NOW. Toad may be no more, but they sure left behind some great music.
Rare Gem-A MUST buy!!!.......2005-01-29
This album offers something for everyone, whether it be the seasoned fan or a newcomer to Toad's music. The versions of All I Want, Fall Down, and I Won't Take These Things for Granted are stellar, and some of the songs, like Know Me, are augmented with some new lyrics and intros. It's a perfect representation of what this band was capable of, and makes me wish they were still together. There are some neat little anecdotes from Glen (Is It for Me?, Brother), and the crowd is supportive, but not overbearing. This has to be one of the finest live recordings I've encountered recently. Even if you just remember Toad the Wet Sprocket from the early 90s, pick up this CD. You won't regret it. I can only hope there will be others.

Album Description
Few artists were as definitive of the popular-early-70's rock sound than the phenomenally successful duo of Loggins & Messina. When they first came together Kenny Loggins was an acclaimed songwriter and Jim Messina a former member of both Buffalo Springfield and Poco. Their combined talents delivered a host of chart hits and timeless favorites that remain classics of the singer-songwriter pop-rock genre. Live finds these two consummate musicians revisiting the music that made them world-famous with the passion and energy that have inspired fans for decades.

loggins & messina live in 05.......2007-06-11
This CD was recorded and mixed as good as it can be having recorded and mixed many albums in the past 33 years tihs one is great.
Selection could have been better.......2007-04-12
Nice live set. My only complaint is...they should have selected "Sail'n The Wind", "Be Free", "Kind Woman" or "Thinking of You" over the much
over-rated "Angry Eyes". Not to fond of THIS version of "Vahevala" either. Otherwise, FANTASTIC!
Loggis and Messina Live: Sittin' in Again at Santa Barbara Bowl........2007-01-10
I thought Jimmy Messina must have died in that he seemed to have disappeared for so many years. Then to have found him again and hear him play and sing so sweet was wonderful. The guy is a master, and to hear their set, music for many of us the background for many a college romance, brought tears to my eyes. Kenny Loggins hasn't lost a thing , including his need to try and be the star, while he is superbly talented and a joy to listen to, Jimmy Messinas guitar, vocals and writing was clearly the backbone of the group, melding perfectly with Kenny Loggins vocals, writing and back up guitar. If you liked their music then, you will love this film and their backup band is first class.
Boy it's SO Good hearing this music again!.......2006-04-02
For some reason I wasn't expecting much of their reunion tour, so I didn't go when they came to the area. My husband got me the DVD for Christmas and I had to have the CD. I was a Loggins fan for many years starting in 1980, spending many teen and 20s days listening to old L and M 33s and tapes. If you like L & M music at all buy this CD. The musicians are SO excellent.
Too Good To Be True.......2006-02-25
If I hadn't attended two shows this summer and seen them live and in person , I would have thought "overdub city".
Not so.
I previously thought (being a musician myself) that the days of loving a concert were long gone.
I urge every fan (and non-fan) to watch and listen.
Also good for performimg musicians; to remind them of why people go to concerts !

Heitor Villa-Lobos (1887-1959) was one of the more prolific composers of the 20th century. He wrote 12 symphonies, of which the Fifth is lost, and composed in every possible musical mode there is, including a Broadway musical and film music. Villa-Lobos's Tenth Symphony (1957) is a grand-scale choral work in a "mixed-language" format. It's meant to celebrate the founding of São Paulo, Brazil, and includes Indian texts, as well as Latin verse that is sung by soloists and choir. All of Villa-Lobos's contrapuntal "bachian" rhythms are here, including his distinct brand of lyrical romanticism. The work is celebratory, opulent, and colorful; the studio sound full-bodied and rich. This is a world-premiere recording that's coifed rather lovingly by conductor Gisèle Ben-Dor, and is a must for fans of Villa-Lobos. ---Paul Cook
Customer Reviews:
5 Stars -- Marvelous Recording of a Great Composition.......2004-12-22
It's hard to find words to describe how excited I am about finding and listening to this disc. Here's a great work by Villa-Lobos which I didn't know existed, and this world-premiere recording is marvelous. We got to know Gisele Ben-Dor when she conducted the Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra (Cambridge, Mass.), where she was a fountain of energy, an inspiration to the orchestra, and an excellent concert programmer for the enthusiastic local audience.
It's interesting to read in the notes for this CD that she traveled to Paris to listed to the reel-to-reel tapes of a 1957 performance conducted by the composer, and found it to be a not-very-good one, and further had to do a lot of "reconstruction" and editing of the score. The result is a consistent, coherent performance which would certainly please the composer.
This work was written for the celebration of the 400th anniversary of the founding of Sao Paolo in 1952, but was not performed then. The first movement, for orchestra alone, is entitled "The Earth and Its Creatures," and is a brilliant display of Villa-Lobos' orchestral technique and sound-painting. Though it may sound raucous on first hearing, it's a perect example of Villa-Lobos' impression of virgin land, with twittering birdcalls, and all manner of creatures roaming the land. The orchestral playing is precise and sumptuous, and the 8 or 9 minutes of the piece seem to go by in an instant. The chorus enters in the second movement, with the women's voices floating as a gossamer veil over quiet background. I'll skip more play-by-play and jump to the final movement; there, in the last minute or so, is one of the most astonishing and exciting conclusions you could imagine, as the final Alleluia celebrates the day of the founding of Sao Paolo.
I'd recommend this disc as a necesary component of any serious Villa-Lobos collection, standing alongside works such as the Forest of the Amazon and the Discover of Brazil suites. And to the previous reviewer, who was a member of the chorus: Great Job!
A World Premire Recording Of A Lost 20th Century Masterpiece.......2003-05-04
The Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos was undoubtedly one of the 20th century's greatest composers, and yet even now he is only known internationally for his admittedly excellent "Bachianas Brasilieras." Conductor Gisele Ben-Dor and her excellent Santa Barbara Symphony went out of their way expand peoples' knowledge of the composer by making this world-premiere recording of his Symphony No. 10 of 1957, known as the "Amerindia." The results are splendid--a work that combines 20th century orchestral color and texts from Latin, Portugese, and South American Indian sources into a memorable collage. Both Ben-Dor and her orchestra are at their top-notch best in this recording, as are vocal soloists Carla Wood, Carlo Sciabelli, and Nmon Ford-Livene, and the choral forces from the Santa Barbara area. Vigorously recommended for contemporary classical fans!
Compelling and colorful.......2000-10-29
For me, Gisele Ben-Dor's recording of the Villa-Lobos 10th represents one extraordinary day of recording with an extraordinary young conductor, great young soloists, and an orchestra and chorus giving the best the have. As a recording producer, I have rarely come across an artist with Gisele's rare combination of dynamism and emotional generosity. I could add her sense of orchestral color and rhythmic drive. We were all exhausted at the end of that long day at the Ormond Theatre and as I left with the raw tapes, scores with hundreds of marks and post-it notes, I knew that the end result would be nothing short of fabulous.

Although I am slightly biased, being a member of the Santa Barbara Choral Society, I thought that this CD was fantastic, just like it was when we performed it in the Arlington Theatre. The CD was much anticipated by me, and the rest of the choir, and it lives up to all expectations. This being the first commercial recording of this work, we had no idea what we were getting into. Gisele Ben-Dor really took a hold of this one, and came up with wonderful results! Even for those without an ear for classical music, this CD will show the great diversities of music, and is bound to end up as a favorite. I feel truly honored to be on a recording such as this.

Beyond all description..........2006-09-19
As a boy, I heard so many hyperbolic references to the legendary Enrico Caruso that I chose to purchase a remastered copy of his "Greatest Hits" when I first began to acquire recordings as a young man. Soon after, I discovered Pavarotti and my life was changed by his music. Caruso ended up in the Goodwill Store. I am convinced that in 500 years, should the earth cool again and the Muslim hoards abate, the civilized world will still tell tales of the greatest tenor. I have often found myself grumpy when searching for recordings of Pavarotti because of the inconsistent fidelity of the recordings. That search for the definitive Pavarotti recordings, regarding both content and fidelity, has ended with the release of this extraordinary collection. Worth it's weight in gold, the Puccinni Volume (#5) alone is enough to send someone like me into hyperspace. I am astounded by the beauty and power of these performances. I will always remember the day, not long ago, when a NPR commentator glibly mentioned between the weather and the night's playlist the terrible words, "Luciano Pavarotti has announced that he is retiring from Opera." I felt as if something indescribably beautiful was fading from the world. Of course, beauty in all of its earthly forms is fleeting at best, but these discs contain a reflection of it that will surely bolster any soul.
An Absolute Must-Have for Any Pavarotti Fan.......2004-01-09
...and that certainly goes without saying. My one tiny little problem with it is that his recordings of "Santa Lucia" and "Caruso" are not on this incredible box-set. Even though I have those recordings on other CDs, I still think those are very important pieces to include on this set (assuming that this set of Pavi hits would be the only compilation that that any fan of this phenomenal tenor would have). He is probably my biggest idol, and he deserves to have been one of the biggest opera stars in history.
Wonderful!!!!.......2002-11-07
This Pavarotti set; The Pavarotti Edition; is a wonderful collection of Arias and songs that cover Luciano's great career. Pavarotti is THE Voice of the 20th Century and this set does him justice. It includes 10 CDs with over 750 minutes of music; Includes Music from All of His roles; has a beautiful 76 page full color booklet; Has a wonderful write up; and includes a bonus CD of Pavarotti's fist album, a 45, from 1964, which has never been released on CD before this set. Every Song is hear, This SET is a must have for every Pavarotti Fan.

Superb Talent!.......2007-05-08
I'm a big fan of all kinds of music. One of the stations I created on Pandora radio was based on Tommy Emmanuel - a truly amazing 'picker'. While listening John Fahey came up as a selection. I was taken back, not simply by his guitar ability, but by the tone, the wonderful ambiance. The first Fahey selection I heard was 'The Death of the Clayton Peacock' and I wanted more. I immediately ordered the CD and was totally absorbed during my first listen. I could easily do Yoga to this - if I did Yoga.
John's greatest hits, live.......2006-08-24
A newly discovered, newly released live session with John Fahey at the top of his game. He'd finished eight albums (more or less) on Takoma, sold his Takoma label and recorded two albums for Vanguard. the big time. And three years or so before he'd make his masterpiece statement, "America". Shy, laconic John occationally talks but mostly plays, without the tape loops feedback and more "psychedelic" stuff. Consistantly good performance, without filler or outtakes. Bluesy, Heartfelt. but without the whiskey.
The announcer is wrong, he might have lived in Berkeley in '68, but he came from Takoma Park Maryland, in suburban Washington, DC as his first label and many song titles attest. On the title track he improvises and pieces together bits from "Voice of the Turtle" (America) and Requiem for Russell Blaine Cooper, from Requia. Those familiar with his studio albums will here similar arrangement with occational improvization. The best cut is the thoughtful leadoff "When Springtime Comes Again" and a standout shortened "Requiem for Mississippi John Hurt".
I met John a few times, talked to him for hours, even tuned his guitars twice. Despite what he later said about disliking his earlier music, I know he'd approve of this. A great find, a great addition to the Fahey cannon, before John went off into the wilderness of his last decades, searching for that new sound....
Well recorded for a live album.
While I don't think it's his best (see my list), it is certainly his best live!
THE Fahey album.......2006-01-28
After extensive listening of many of John Fahey's albums, I would say that this is easily the best. It brings together many of the best songs off his albums in incredible form. For evidence, just listen to the version of "when the springtime comes again," one of the greatest fingerpicking performances ever, in my opinion. The whole disc is almost equally good, there is a great assortment of fingerpicking, slide, and alternate tunings. Anyone interested in Fahey or fingerpicking or blues should get this immediately and prepare to be blown away.
Fahey blows his nose, and there ain't no better thing........2005-02-23
I just bought this album, and I should probably listen to it and study
it for a decade or two, like I did with almost all the rest of Fahey's
amazing production, before pronouncing a verdict like this, but.... here
it comes. This could be the one Fahey CD to have if for some cruel and
unusual reason you were condemned to only have one. He was at the top
of his game in terms of creativity (though some of his early eighties live
guitar playing remains unmatched technically and is better recorded) and
chose a marvelous (marvelous!) set of compositions for these concerts,
including some of the more ambitious and complex symphony-like pieces,
as well as a handful of the more folksy and gospely arrangements that
made him a favorite of fingepicking gymnasts.
Live albums are my favorite of his, and this is inevitable, after seeing
him in concert. Live, he was shyer with kitch and gratuitous
experimentalism than he was on vinyl, but still visionary and
uncompromising. He communicated an energy, and a sense of complete
sincerity and meaning that where overwhelming and emotionally
exhausting. He also had a sound that was out of this world. I once hung
out with him for a couple of hours while he was warming up before a
concert. For him a warm-up was much like that of an athlete, because he
played strings that would have pulled a cable car and used picks that
could have been made out of the rails (ok, slight exhaggeration). But out of
all of that metal he managed to negotiate a rich, complex and
surprisingly warm range of tones, as well as a massive volume and
harmonic inhertia (check out the requiem for John Hurt). Most everyone
else on the same gear would sound like an old metal bridge swaying in
the wind.
So, listen to the beautifuly simple and profound melody of Joe Kirby
Blues. It is an elementary piece to play. If it does not get you to a
guitar store buying metal picks and steel strings (and the wood to go
with it) I don't know what else will.
Essential early Fahey.......2004-12-23
The earliest live recordings yet released by the late and immortal John Fahey, find him at the peak of his powers. Veering between his vision and version of traditional playing that may ocassionally slow or speed up for emotional emphasis, to pieces of beautiful hallucinatory individuality and expression like "Dance of the Inhabitants of the Palace of King Philip XIV of Spain". Over 76 minutes long with excellent sound quality, and most of the audience noise thoughtfully edited out by producer (and liner note author) Glenn Jones (of Cul de Sac), making this sound more like an album than a "live album", though it has all of the charm of the latter, without having it's flow chopped up by waves of applause. Subtitled "Live at The Matrix San Francisco, California 1968/1969", this is essential for the already converted, and an ideal entry point for the novice.

A Staple CD - Must have!.......2002-11-29
Celina and Reutilio bring us, not only the spiritual and primal beauty that is this spiritual music, but the culture and folklore of a people. Most Spanish adults of Carribean descent can recognize any these songs instantly, whether or not they practiced Santeria. The music is that powerful.
It is powerful on both a spiritual and cultural level and no one can here Santa Barbara without knowing where it came from....Celina. She is the clear and classic voice that pushes the senses to the next level.

Brilliant Recording and Timely Recognition.......2001-06-30
I concur with the previous 5-star review. Three years ago there was little hope that these works would receive a hearing and now we have one, WHAT a hearing. A must for any fan of Latin American music and especially Silvestre Revueltas.
A neglected composer.......2000-10-27
Bates recommends Dorian 90244 as a more interesting piece. conducted by a more notable musician Matas Why is label and catalog # not availble on your site?
Brilliant Recording.......1998-11-18
I was quite surprised at this wonderful recording. As a big fan of Revueltas' work, I was excited that another major work was released. The production and selection of material for the disk was done very well, but what surprised me was brilliant musicianship from this ensemble (Santa Barbara) that made for a truly enjoyable disk. This has to rank as one of the finest interpretations of a Revueltas work in recent memory. Great interpretation and conducting by Ben-Dor!

El Sabio, the laudatory name for King Alfonso X of Castile and Leon, means "the learned," and among this legendary 13th-century king's accomplishments was the gathering, editing, copying, and illustration of a collection of songs known as the Cantigas de Santa Maria. This outstanding recording features 18 of the original collection's more than 400 songs--an enticing sampling that only begins to suggest the music's enormous variety and inventiveness. Although most of the songs center on praise and reverence for the Virgin Mary, there also are religious feast songs, stories about Marian miracles, penitential prayers, and occasionally, songs of erotic love and romantic longing. Unlike liturgical chant, these songs are often highly rhythmic, with dancing, shifting accents according to the stresses of the text. Some songs are charged with atmosphere, created by stark harmonies and accompanying drones. Sequentia's brilliant, energetic performances clearly convey the flesh-and-blood lives that inspired these songs and make them still exciting 700 years later. --David Vernier

Extraordinary polyphony.......2005-03-28
This is an absolutely beautiful CD, with Renaissance Masses by des Prez, William Byrd, and de Victoria (Vittoria). When I compare the performances here with other ensembles, this one is superior. Very highly recommended.
Simply Beautiful.......2004-12-18
The Latin Mass is quite possibly the most beautiful collection of choral music I have ever heard. The melodic lines of each part seem to weave in and out of one another, and the effect is absolutely gorgeous. I also love the harmonies and the blend of voices. Definately a must-have for all choral music-lovers.
Love it!.......2004-04-12
My interest in old Latin music was triggered from watching Disney's THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME , which was absolutely stuffed with these wonderful hymns, psalms, and masses (Get the soundtrack and the DVD! NOW!). So I went and got this disc, and was stunned.
You needn't be a religious Catholic to enjoy these gorgeous Latin masses. I, an all-out Atheist, happen to get a tear in my eye every time I hear them.
Beautiful Music.......2003-12-08
Your acquired tastes in music needn't include Latin masses to enjoy this album. Truly timeless, the music on this CD is beautiful beyond words.
If the ability of a recording not only to stand up to repeated listenings but to demand them is any qualification, then Latin Mass easily earns all five stars.

A Five-star Disk.......2002-08-12
Speaking as a pianist, I particularly enjoyed this CD. Although it is all-Liszt, it gives a good idea of the many abilities of this artist.
Zeynep Ucbasaran has a very, very clear and clean articulation when required, but also is a master of the pedals. She uses that sometimes wrongly-called "loud pedal" to create soft, swirling effects that can be like delicate pastel fingerpainting. I think she is using every trick there is.
She's a master technician overall, who at the same time convincingly presents a very wide emotional panorama, from te fury of "Funerailles" to the fluttering delicacy of the Liszt's variations on the lovely old "Folie d'Espagne." A five-star disk.
Classical Music Review: London.......2002-07-22
Franz Liszt - Santa Barbara Liszt Album (Zeynep Ucbasaran). Les cloches de Genève; Funérailles; Eroica; Trübe Wolken / Nuages gris; Fantasie und Fuge über das Thema B-A-C-H; Schubert Lied Transcriptions: Erstarrung, Aufenthalt, Ave Maria; Rhapsodie espagnole. Zeynep Ucbasaran, piano. Eroica JDT 3092 (72'39).
Too often Franz Liszt's deepest insights are trammeled by the exhibitionism of the virtuoso. Liszt did write some facile, showy pieces -- a few of the Hungarian Rhapsodies come to mind -- but in his greatest works there is a transcendental spirituality that can touch the soul of even as jaded a cynic as myself. It is this vein in Liszt's music that Zeynep Ucbasaran explores in her "Santa Barbara Liszt Album."
If indeed this is the side of Liszt that Ucbasaran is exploring, she couldn't have chosen a better program. The disk opens with the gentle arpeggios of Les cloches of Genève, an impression of the distant bells of the Swiss city. She follows this with Funérailles. An elegy for Hungarian patriots executed in the wake of the revolution of 1848, this brooding piece is anchored by a relentless death march punctuated by powerful passages of grief and anger. The program continues with "Eroica", from the Transcendental études, a notoriously difficult set of pieces, and that foreshadowing of Impressionism from late in Liszt's life, Nuages gris. These two comparatively shorter pieces are followed by a piano version of Liszt's massive work for organ, the Fantasie und Fuge über das Thema B-A-C-H. Ucbasaran handles the demanding passages of this dense work with elegance. Three varied Schubert lied transcriptions reaffirm Liszt's debt to that composer and the program concludes with a rousing version of the Rhapsodie espagnole.
There is no question that Zeynep Ucbasaran has the technical equipment to handle Liszt's challenges, but what is most impressive is the intelligence and sensitivity she brings to her playing. It is, for the most part, an introverted interpretation. Each piece sounds more desolate and brooding than in other performances I've heard. Yet, far from being oppressive, this approach allows the rays of light that sporadically punctuate Liszt's pieces to shine more brightly, freed as they are from the egotism that often spoils performances of this composer's work.
