5 out of 5 stars a most relaxing and peaceful feeling.......2007-01-04

I FIRST HEARD THIS CD IN A RESTAURANT AND FELL IN LOVE WITH THE VOICE. ALTHOUGH I DON'T SPEAK SPANISH, THE WORDS SEEM TO STIR SUCH PEACEFUL AND LOVING FEELINGS IN ME.

5 out of 5 stars Great Luis Miguel boleros and romantic songs........2006-11-07

This is the best collection of Luis Miguel's most romantic songs. Lots of boleros, very beautiful lyrics. We were looking for a great bolero for our first dance at our wedding. There were lots to choose from, so we found the perfect tempo. I highly recommend this collection to anyone who loves Luis Miguel or wants to get to know his music. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars The Best music of It's Kind.......2006-05-31

My wife introduced me to the bolero music of the early years and then introduced me to Luis Miguels Romances cd a few years ago. This CD, his complete collection of his Romances is an unbelievable find. To think, the once child singer at the age of 20 could belt out music like this. He did this recording between the age of 20-25 and the music sounds soulfully mature and rich.

One thing you will notice is the progression in the professionalism of the recordings, the richness of the voice and the feeling for the music.

Amazingly, Luis Miguel still belts it out live. His live voice is so much like his recorded voice. I have never in my life heard such great music. If you want to share wonderful time with the one you love, get this cd set. It will be well worth the investment.

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation .......2006-04-10

Luis Miguel is one of the greatest Latin American singers of all time. His smooth boleros are so masterfully done that even if you don't understand the language you will definitely understand his talent.
Contained in this volume are all the boleros Luis Miguel has recorded since he switched from pop to the more classic boleros.
This is a great buy if you are getting interested in Luis Miguel's music for the first time. It is also a must for those who have listened to Luis Miguel's before and for those who want to take a closer look at his recording career.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Romantic Luis Miguel songs.......2006-02-23

Excellent, great listening, romantic and totally Luis Miguel at his finest. If you like this one - you will also love 33.

5 out of 5 stars Faure Essentials.......2007-05-29

If you want to persuade someone to listen to Faure then this is the album to begin with. It contains the very best known melodies.

5 out of 5 stars music inside you.......2005-10-01

Have you ever felt music inside you when watching the sun going down, when felling the breeze in your hair, when smelling the grass in a gentle summer night...? The music of this CD may remind you that part of yourself that we may tend to forget in our busy life, liked the words of Celibidache which I liked very much: "the music is not the notes, YOU are the music"!
You would feel in this way, when listening to this CD.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent compilation of Faure's work.......2003-02-15

I bought this cd not knowing anything about Gabriel Faure's music. A local orchestra was planning to perform Masques et Bergamasques, so I picked this cd being the most inexpensive way of buying something I possibly was not going to enjoy. But nothing could be further from the truth. I love this cd! It has such a nice variation of formats: piano concerto (Ballede in F sharp major Op. 19), piano solo (Baracarolle No.1 in A minor, Op. 20), vocal (Requiem, Op. 48), and symphony (Masques et Bergamasques). The music is also well played by various artists...no complaints on the performance side. And if it is true that one becomes the thoughts and vibrations that one allows to enter his or her mind, then by listening to Faure you may find yourself becoming a bit more tender, patient, and even romantic in your ways.

4 out of 5 stars Romance.......2002-11-23

Bought this CD originally because of Romance, but I like it all. This is a new composer for me and I'm glad I found Faure'.

4 out of 5 stars good value.......2002-03-01

i'd recommend this to anyone who wants to get an inexpensive taste for faure's music. The recordings are decent, and the selection is interesting. After this, check out his nocturnes for piano and of course the Requiem.

4 out of 5 stars Selection of Songs?.......2006-07-02

Perlman is a man of extraordinary clarity and tonality also one of my favorite violinists. After I finish practicing a piece I usually find a recording to listen to different interpretations. Most of them are by Perlman and Heifetz. Unfortunately this album has some obscure songs and the songs itself do not do justice to Perlman what some other songs may have done. Still it is important to broaden the scope, so I would recommend this to all music connoisseurs :). btw i'm only 16 so...don't take this review too literal huh?

5 out of 5 stars If you are a violin lover, buy it.......2003-01-19

It's beautiful. Simply put.

5 out of 5 stars This is "THE" Greatest Hits alum by Perlman.......2000-12-03

Perlam is already a great player like the whole world knows. But the music selection couldn't better! I espacily like the piano accomplimant. Perlman pays the pieces with true style. The working realtionship between Perlman and the Pianist is truly incredible. Before geting any of Perlman's other greatest hits albums, get this one!

3 out of 5 stars This is a relaxing, however, somewhat disjointed collection........1998-11-12

This collection of familiar tunes will provide a relaxing hour with one of the world's premier violinists. However, the combination of "The Old Folks at Home" and "Motto perpetuo" is somewhat difficult to assimilate. At any rate, Perlman is a listener's joy!

Album Description

"One of the most brilliant and inquisitive artists of the new generation." -NEW YORK TIMES

As is generally known, Beethoven later transcribed his violin concerto as a piano concerto, for which he wrote some additional solo cadenzas. Christian Tetzlaff has in turn transcribed these original piano cadenzas for the violin. According to Tetzlaff, the cadenzas by Fritz Kreisler that are usually heard are "alien - in purely harmonic terms, but also in terms of the concept and the idea behind them. Beethoven pursues an entirely different approach in his original piano cadenzas". Voted the 2005 Instrumentalist of the Year by Musical America, Tetzlaff regularly gives guest performances as a soloist and chamber musician in all the international musical centers, such as at New York's Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center, the Concertgebouw Amsterdam and Vienna's Musikverein as well as in London, Paris, Berlin, and Munich. He has been awarded several prizes for his numerous CD recordings, including two Diapason d'Ors, the Edison Prize, the Echo Prize, and nominations for the Grammy Awards. This recording offers one of today's leading soloists along with conductor David Zinman, whose Beethoven recordings are praised by critics and fans. David Zinman has risen to the pinnacle of his career in the last decade. After bringing the Baltimore Symphony to major status, he became musical director of the Aspen Music Festival and then took the helm of Zurich's beloved Tonhalle Orchestra, with which he has undertaken highly successful tours of Europe, the U.S. and Asia. Zinman's discography, which includes over 100 recordings, has won five Grammys and two Grands Prix du Disque. Zinman's complete Beethoven symphony set with this same orchestra received the Award of the German Record Critics in 1999 and has since gone from one rave review to another. Founded in 1868, the Zurich Tonhalle Orchestra is Switzerland's oldest symphony orchestra. Today it gives over 90 concerts each season, featuring more than 50 different programs with the world's leading conductors and solo artists.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Beethoven minus Romantic cobwebs.......2006-06-25

As in his remarkable Beethoven symphony cycle, Zinman and his Zurich orchestra allow the listener to hear the concerto from a fresh perspective; the cadenzas used by Christian Tetzlaff, Germany's finest violinist at present (yes, above Mutter - just compare their Mozart concerti),derive from Beethoven's transcription of his violin concerto for the piano. When the cadenza first appears this listener REALLY took notice, and some will find the piece virtually unrecognizable at this point, but I found it fascinating and successful-far removed from the heavily romanticized accounts of the work most will be accustomed to. The finale, which at a slow tempo can be quite laborious, sparkles like no other of recent vintage. I can imagine some will abhor this recording for the first movement waywardness, but any one who has enjoyed Zinman's Beethoven symphonies will delight in this new recording and gain a refreshing view of this, arguably the greatest of all violin concerti. Excellent sound-better than that heard in the symphonies. I want to hear now the rest of the piano concerto cycle with Zinman and Bronfman.

5 out of 5 stars Love the soprano sax.......2007-05-18

If you don't already love the soprano sax, this should do it for you.

5 out of 5 stars Incredibly Musical Peformance.......2006-03-20

In my opinion, this is one of the best Classical CDs ever produced. I listen to it often and I am amazed at what an incredibly MUSICAL performance Branford Marsalis had. If you like saxaphone, I think you will love it. If you don't, I think you will still find it valuable because the technique, the phrasing are quintissential.

3 out of 5 stars Just a small point of rectifition.......2004-12-28

None of the works presented here precede the invention of the saxophone. Please look this up. You will find the saxophone invented around 1840, yes early romantic. And in addition, I believe many of the composers here used the saxophone at least once in their music. This is certainly true of Stravinsky, Debussy, Ravel and Villa-Lobos. (Villa-Lobos used the saxophone in at least 40 works!)

2 out of 5 stars What am I missing?.......2003-12-19

I think it is very admirable that Marsalis has attempted to produce a classical CD, however, this is not the sublime, masterpiece that so many previous reviewers have labelled it. His tone is particularly unstable, and not very even, his soprano playing is miles better than his alto however. This is a real shame, as the primary solo instrument in the saxophone family is the alto, anyone beginning study in classical saxophone would need to get this sorted first. His tuning is barely acceptable, but only for a jazzo, he would be shot if he played so out for a real saxophone teacher. Please have a listen to some real repertoire for saxophone, played by a real player, such as Bornkamp, Rousseau, Delangle, Fourmeau, Michat, Londeix, etc. This is a good INTRODUCTION to classical music, if for the first time, but please don't accept this as being the be all and end all of classical music, and of saxophone.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful!!.......2003-03-17

I hae been a fan of Branford Marsalis for a while, but I had no idea that he had created a classical album. All of the songs are beautifully rendered. This CD is a treasure at any price.

Album Description

The process of choosing music for a wedding day can certainly be a daunting process for any couple. There are many choices and the questions can be endless. Will your Mom cry (and not in a good way) if you do not come down the aisle to the traditional Wedding March from Wagner, or are you eager to try something new? This collection is designed to give the bridal couple some key pointers to navigate the world of classical music for their wedding day. The package includes over 3 1/2 hours of music on 3 CDs for all portions of the wedding service, all from the Naxos classical label (known for high-quality recordings at inexpensive prices). Everything you need to create your own unique personal wedding soundtrack.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars GREAT WEDDING MUSIC!.......2007-01-24

I used these CD's for my wedding, and I was so happy I did. You need to buy this CD if you like having a traditional wedding! :)

5 out of 5 stars Good Music.......2006-07-05

I bought these CDs for my wedding, in ceremony and reception. Also, when I created my own wedding video, I used it as background music.

4 out of 5 stars A very complete selection of ceremony music!.......2005-02-02

I am getting married in several months and we couldn't decide what music we wanted at our wedding ceremony. This three disk compilation reminded us of all the great ones- including new options we hadn't thought about. I really enjoyed hearing the organ and strings versions of the songs. If you're someone who hears a classical or baroque piece of music, but can't remember the name or the precise tune, this is a must-have to jog your memory and trigger the tear ducts!

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Classical Selection.......2004-04-15

I searched all over for a CD set that had a somewhat comprehensive list of classical selections that are traditionally played at weddings. When I found this 3 CD set, I was very pleased. It contains 61 works from almost as many composers. This set might not contain the "best recording ever" of each of the selections, however it is very well done and the quality is very good. I used it primarily to choose the pieces that I wanted to have played by the church organist, and so the actual recordings were more for my consumption rather than for use in the ceremony/reception itself. However, I would not have hestitated to use the CD's in the wedding itself if needed. The book inside includes a list of suggested songs for various wedding styles (formal, outside, morning, etc.). From the classical neophyte to the seasoned classical music expert, this CD set will meet if not exceed expectations.

4 out of 5 stars Just one note..........2003-06-07

I have not heard this album, so I cannot rate it as a whole. (The form made me include a rating, but disregard that.) However, I want to point out that track 36, the Pie Jesu from Gabriel Faure's Requiem is - well, from a requiem, a mass for the dead. The Pie Jesu is a lovely, gentle movement, and it has a beautiful and pure sound that does seem to fit the mood of a wedding. The Latin words, however, mean "Merciful Lord Jesus, grant them everlasting rest," where "them" refers to the dead.

Beautiful, but perhaps not so suitable for a wedding.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Stunning, beautiful, transformational.......2007-06-28

I don't take the time to write many reviews, but for this I will. A few times in my life I've heard music that made me stop what I was doing and pay attention, and this is one of those times. It's beautiful beyond description. This is not your typical flute music. It's wonderfully mellow, soulful, and passionate, with a deep feeling to it, a heart. Made me tear up. It also made me relax.

This is a very intimate recording, giving you the feeling of being there. If you listen closely, you can occasionally hear the breathing of the flutist. Far from detracting from the recording, it enhances it by reminding you of the humanity behind the music.

All 12 songs on the CD are excellent. It's a very consistent performance. And if you like it, a companion CD, "The Dreamer, Romances for Alto Flute, Volume 2," is ever bit as good.

2 out of 5 stars disappointed.......2007-04-27

I was so excited to purchase this CD. The reviews were so glowing and enthusiastic about the music. I was sure I would love it. Well......I didn't. The music was all right, but surely not the most beautiful I'd ever heard. And, I discovered that I could hear an intake of breath after every phrase. I found this to be very distracting. I will most likely pass this CD along to my mother, and if she doesn't like it, it will probably go to Goodwill.

5 out of 5 stars Float on the calm..........2007-04-09

Several years ago I was visited an "Earth Expo" in New York City. Although these Expos are supposed to be filled with airy fairy new age feel good moments, I found the experience to be phony and awful. While waiting for a friend to be finished getting a Reiki massage, my body went from tensed to relaxed; but I couldn't figure out why. I walked up the next aisle and there I found the source of my incredible calmness; it was Tim Wheater playing his Alto Flute. I was hooked.

5 out of 5 stars excellent purchase.......2007-02-15

I am very satisfied with my recent purchase. Deliver very prompt and of course a very good cd. thanks

5 out of 5 stars Loveliest Music I've Ever Heard.......2006-03-11

Had my first acupuncture treatment yesterday, and was pretty nervous until I walked into the room and heard this beautiful music playing softly in the background. While lying on the table, I drifted off into the most calming, relaxing state of being that I've ever experienced. I asked the therapist to write down the name of the CD, because I want to buy it. It's totally amazing! I'm glad to see that these fine artists have done other titles, which I'm anxious to explore. I have NEVER recommended anything at Amazon before, but felt I HAD to this time. I would buy this at TWICE the cost. The planet certainly can use some peace these days. Bring this home and find wonderful peace in your own little corner. Share it with your family and friends. It's THAT good.

5 out of 5 stars A must for romantics - a perennial classic!.......2005-10-16

I used to be a romatic guy when I was very young, but then I switched to a more upbeat type of music when I got older (age crisis?) Well, this CD really brought back the old romantic guy I was. If you claim being a romantic one, then this must be in your collection. I love to play it and dance with my wife, even in front of our boys, so they know what true romance is. Perfect for baby-making nights, it will relax you and get all the right senses ready. Yeah!!

5 out of 5 stars I can't speak spanish but heart does the translation........2002-10-26

Oh how his voice gives me emotional goose bumps.I cannot speak or understand spanish, but my heart takes care of this short coming. The voice is warm, romantic, soothing to my soul with orchestration to die for.To my English speaking friends go ahead and get this classic, your heart will thank you.

5 out of 5 stars Romances.......2001-10-06

What music, what an artist! My husband and I were at the Radisson in Miami, sitting at the bar and waiting for an open table for dinner. I heard this "music" coming from the speakers, it gave me goosebumps! I asked the bartender who it was singing and he said Luis Miguel. Well, I was hooked from then on. It's been 5 yrs. since that night and I've got I believe just about every CD he's made. I find myself singing along to all the songs, learning & speaking a little Spanish too! The songs he sings in Spanish sound so much more romantic than when you hear them in English, at least I think so. The bartender saw how much I loved the CD, he played it again just for me! I think Luis is wonderul and I plan to see him in concert if he ever comes my way. My husband even likes his songs. I personally would rate this 10 Stars if I could!

5 out of 5 stars Very, very savvy.......2001-06-06

This is truly an exceptional piece of work. I can see why it was awarded a Grammy. A listener must understand that Luis was one of the primary arrangers of the songs, that is, these are very famous international love songs from a different, more refined time. Each one has been "covered" to relfect Luis' own musical style and interpretation. If you listen carefully or frequently enough, you will hear the subtleties behind each presentation; some are quite delicate in the use of brass or strings, woodwinds, etc. Luis' voice is a classically trained voice and very, very precise. This is an elegant, romantic, and timeless album.

5 out of 5 stars Very romantic!.......2001-05-04

This "romances" album is indeed "very romantic" and always good to listen any time of the day no matter what your mood is. His voice has improved since he was a little kid and by singing those romances songs takes you back in time where things were different and of course, more romantic.

5 out of 5 stars Easy listening.......2007-05-15

Beautiful performance by Shaham (especially the two Kreisler pieces), perfectly backed by the Orpheus orchestra.

5 out of 5 stars Gil Shaham Shines.......2003-11-01

Gil Shaham has been a regular guest artist with the Fort Wayne Philharmonic and, whether I've heard him in person or via the rebroadcast of the concert on National Public Radio station WBNI, it has always been a treat to hear him play. He is usually interviewed for the broadcasts, too, and he is as fascinating and enthusiastic a speaker as he is a player. He genuinely enjoys what he does and this comes across in his warm playing.

I am a big fan of Fritz Kreisler and have long enjoyed the short pieces that he wrote and performed, both in live performances and for Victor recordings. The first recording I ever heard of Kreisler was a 78-rpm album called "My Favorites," which featured a remarkable full color photograph of the musician (something rare in the 1940's). He included arrangements for solo violin and full orchestra of his most popular works, some of which are included in this recording. Kreisler's music is nostalgic and touching; he made no effort to go along with twentieth century musical trends and was still very successful as a composer and performer. It's great to hear his music again in these modern performances, expertly played by Gil Shaham and the Orpheus Orchestra.

I acquired this recording via a record club and have really enjoyed it. These are some of the lighter, shorter works by a variety of composers and they are all extremely enjoyable. The playing is exquisite throughout and conductor-less Orpheus Orchestra provides very fine accompaniment. (It always amazes me how well these musicians play without a conductor; they obviously are very gifted, skilled musicians and this is apparent in this recording.)

Shaham has also spoken enthusiastiacally about his recordings, which he immensely enjoys making since he can reach a wider audience than could ever hear him in concert or recital. This is definitely one of his best recordings.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful music; gorgeous playing........2000-09-20

No violinist I've ever heard has a tone as gorgeous as Gil Shaham. Shaham's gorgeous tone, as well as his artistic taste and easy-going temperament, make this excellent collection of violin romances a joy to listen to. This may or may not be great music, depending upon your taste, but it certainly is beautiful music, beautifully performed.

5 out of 5 stars Gil Shaham is my favourite violinist and I love his playing........1998-12-10

Gil has been my favourite young violinist for quite some time and I think he is just brilliant. This CD has some of the most gorgeous pieces of music ever written for the violin and he plays them all beautifully.

4 out of 5 stars Very beautiful, relaxing music........1998-09-18

I love the combination of these peices. They are all very expressive and eloquent on the part of the performer.

5 out of 5 stars My Brahms.......2007-05-31

Opus 77 has always been one of my favorites, though this performance does seem a bit unorthodox, making up in liveliness what it lacks in finesse.
Then again, it takes a measure of musical sophistication to appreciate some nuances over others.

I've also come across Brahms's op. 77, 3rd movement in the movie (Warsaw Ghetto) Uprising. It melded in beautifully.

1 out of 5 stars Defective.......2007-05-12

I bought this CD, unwrapped it and started to play it. There is nothing wrong with the music or the performances, as they are superb. But you better buy it on another disc, because this edition has pops all over the last track. I thought it was one defective CD, but I returned it and got another--and it had the exact same pops in the exact same places. This is not my CD player. It happens on all CD players, including my computer, which is usually impervious to such nonsense. So, get a different edition. The current printing of these CDs is flawed. And, to make matters better, Sony doesn't take their CDs back--they say that they are perfect. So unless the store you buy it from has a refund policy, you're screwed. I can exchange the CD, and I have, but the new one has pops, too, and since I can't get my money back I now have a recording of the Brahms violin concerto only. Don't get screwed, too, and buy these performances on a different disc.

4 out of 5 stars Fierce energy, but..........2006-04-26

I am not entirely satisfied with these performances. In fact, I don't understand what the other reviewers write about, obviously I am on another planet.
The playing at this Ormandy/Stern/Rose is as if the life of conductor, soloists and orchestra were at stake; it is performances of fierce energy. I doubt you will find a Stern/Ormandy-performance sounding indifferent, oh no.
Still I am not so happy with the result of this Brahms. It has very much the feeling of a live concerto, in which the band is carried away by the music, missing the structure. The performance is always at peak. What I miss is anticipation, foreboding, build up, contrasts... Some times less is more...
Well, this is certainly a matter of taste. These performances were events, no doubt about that.

I got some recordings of these concertos. Shaham/Wang/Abbado, Szeryng/Starker/Haitink, Fournier/Oistrakh/Galliera, and of op. 77 alone I have even more versions, Oistrakh/Klemperer (grand and beautiful) and Heifetz, with both Reiner (forward drive, very good shape of the work and great playing) and Koussivetsky (great range of moods). Last but not least, the op. 102 with Mordkovitch/Wallfisch/Jarvi.

If I should have the two concertos on one single CD, I would go for the Szeryng/Starker/Haitink - amazon-search: B00004Z1QL - because it stirs my appetite for more, it has a certain grandour, it is something of a happy celebration; and in spite of quite slow tempos, it has anticipation, foreboding, build up, as Brahms intended; he shaped his concertos as symphonies with obligato soloists. It never fails to put me in a good mood. And it is very cheap. The only problem is that it is missing quite a bit in passion.

If you want state-of-the-art-sound and can tolerate to buy the two concertos separately (you should tolerate that), I recommend Mullova/Abbado live in Japan for the op. 77 and Mordkovitch/Wallfisch/Jarvi for the op. 102. Those performances are the best I have heard to date, considered the wonderful sound, the Mordkovitch/Wallfisch/Jarvi goes straight to the top, and Mullova/Abbado is nothing less than a must-have.
Op. 77 Mullova/Abbado live in Japan, more recommended than anything else: Johannes Brahms: Violin Concerto
Op. 102 (and Bruch's popular 1st) Mordkovitch/Wallfisch/Jarvi, is good, but not as passionate as the Mullova on op. 77. Yet worth a try: Bruch: Violin Concerto, Op. 102; Brahms: Violin Concerto, Op. 26

5 out of 5 stars Brahmsian Through and Through.......2005-05-10

If anyone - and I doubt they can still get away with it - wishes to claim that Eugene Ormandy had a "one size fits all" method of conducting, I entreat them to find a more Brahmsian, more Germanic, rendering of the third B's violin concerto than this recording. Eugene Ormandy's treatment of its opening phrases is at once so disciplined yet pliant - with the setup of the same sense of majestic forbearance and layered tonality he brings to his recordings of Brahms' symphonies. The tenuous overlapping of the strings with the winds alone is a textbook example of instrumental balance. Listeners can clearly understand why Ormandy was so renowned as a peerless colloborator. And this overwhelming tidal wave of sound comes even before Stern's violin has uttered a note!

Too often, I have heard other maestros conduct a concerto indifferently, on the mistaken assumption that it is, after all, the soloist's opportunity to shine -- not the orchestra's -- least of all, the conductor's. Such a passive approach runs counter to the composer's intentions; especially one such as Brahms, whose musical statements are of symphonic proportions, even in his concertos and sonatas (his First Piano Concerto was originally drafted as a symphony). Ormandy presents Stern with the proverbial "tough act to follow."

Isaac Stern's genius lies in the fact that with the singular voice of his violin he rises to the challenge -- and surpasses it. His violin cuts through the orchestra sharp as a stiletto, and never lets up in heightening the sense of drama.

Ormandy's genius lies in the fact that the orchestra's accompaniment never overwhelms Stern's violin, yet also never fades into the background, either; Ormandy's is a sympathetic and holistic approach, fluid in tempo and accommodating in dynamics in providing the perfect counter-balance to Stern's performance.

Stern and Ormandy performed and recorded many great concerti together while both were with Columbia: Tchaikovsky, Sibelius, Mendelssohn, both of Prokofieff's. Stern always had the highest praise for Ormandy's uncanny ability to anticipate a solist's nuances. "Gene becomes an extension of your own phrasing and music making," Stern said in 1979. "It's almost as if he were taking part in your bowing as you play, because subtleties in pressure and phrasing -- if you're playing well you do them spontaneously -- he responds to instantly, even a millisecond ahead of time.

"I've often said," he joked, "that if you were going to catch cold and sneeze next week, Ormandy would already be there with a handkerchief -- you didn't know it was going to happen, but he did." Nowhere is this seamless melding of musical minds so apparent between the two than on this landmark performance.

Of all the recordings I've heard of this concerto, none can match Stern's and Ormandy's sense of tension-and-release, which is sustained from the introduction through the finale . It is, by far, the most intellectual performance I've heard -- yet so sanguine, so melodic. There is nothing sloppy or extraneous in Stern's playing: It is pure logic, an exacting rendition in which Stern is in command of every note. Like Heifetz' recording with Fritz Reiner and the Chicago Symphony (1958), this recording is very up-tempo. Yet, unlike Heifetz -- who sometimes dashes through a passage so quickly that he glosses over notes -- every note is endowed with purpose and intent.

The finale is breathtakingly bold, without ever being brash. It's one of the best examples of sustained and controlled passion I've heard on records -- akin to God holding a force of nature in his bare hands, unleashing it at the peak of its potency.

Both Stern and Ormandy thus have produced a musical document that speaks profoundly towards the respect and awe both men had before Brahms' oeuvre: I cannot tell the difference between Stern's approach towards the work and Ormandy's. Both musicians seem to be channeling the weighty and commanding German composer, but without getting bogged down in stale, scholarly, interpretation. Their passion for Brahms comes through with a clarity one usually associates with the iconoclastic composers, such as Mahler or Satie.

Recorded in 1959, this recording is one of the earliest stereophonic recordings in either Stern's or Ormandy's career. On the compact disc, though, you can't tell: The microphones catch every nuance every raspy bass and 'cello string, the ring of the brass, the rush of the wind as its passes through the flutes and the full range of Isaac Stern's virtuosic expression on his very dolce Guarnerius del Gesu.

This is a recording for the ages: It entertains, thrills and inspires. As for the Double Concerto, it deserves equally high marks: The communication between Leonard Rose, Isaac Stern, Eugene Ormandy and the orchestra players is truly amazing, and this is the best recording I've heard of it, even topping Toscanini's recording with Frank Miller and Mischa Mischakoff.

5 out of 5 stars Stern & Rose geniales.......2004-09-17

Imperdible
