Weave Middle Eastern influences and guitar to their beloved and intelligent Synthpop/Electronica sound and you will only scratch the surface of what you'll explore in these intricately created dance ballads. A must for fans of New Order, Depeche Mode, Natasha Atlas, Peter Gabriel, Conjure One, Delerium, Dead Can Dance and Talvin Singh.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Been Around the World.......2004-03-31

" By the time the moon has set on Cairo,I will already be walking in Berlin". These are the lines that open the song "Travelogue", admittedly one of my favorites already on this album. In fact, I would go so far as to say that this song exemplifies the album -- its a harrowing and breathtaking journey 'round the world at breakneck speed. A goodly portion of this album is Eastern-flavored, spiced with Eastern instrumentation instead of the corn syrup of the majority of today's synthpop. The addition of more guitar and the occasional down-and-dirty bassline makes me want to delete the "synth" from their description as "pop". It is obvious that Null Device has not been resting on their laurels since the release of their excellent debut disc "Sublimation". "A Million Different Moments" mixes beats, plaintive vocals and unique instruments to create a gorgeous tapestry of urgency and motion. I'm totally in love with the "versiyon turk" mix of "Travelogue". "Unknowingly", "Prevailing Winds" and the frenetic "Walk in London" are also not to be missed! This is a no-brainer: fans of Natacha Atlas, Peter Gabriel, and Escape With Romeo should check this disc out. I'm pleasantly surprised by the directions that Null Device has taken with this album and the more I listen to it, the more I like it. Their sound evolves, but two things remain the same: Null Device still can't seem to "find their baby", and I still love hearing them make music about it.

    5 out of 5 stars Don't just call 'em a synth band........2004-02-11

A Million Different Moments sets an even higher musical standard than its predecessor, 2002's critically-lauded Sublimation. Deftly fusing elements of classic synthpop with influences ranging from Middle Eastern instrumentation to classical, trip-hop, and drum n' bass, Null Device ventures confidently into unknown territories to produce great rewards sonically, vocally, and lyrically.

Fans of such acts as Delirium, Iris, Portishead, and GusGus will no doubt be entranced by Eric Oehler and Eric Goedken's infectious songs of longing and heartache. A Million Different Moments both elevates and expands the world of synthpop, leaving doubters of the genre's ability to grow in the dust and creating a landmark disc of incredible quality and depth. In all honesty, there's a lot of "synth" (which I think ND has evolved past) out there which simply wishes it was Red Flag or, of course, Depeche Mode. This is so much more than that.

A Million Different Moments continues Null Device's breakneck evolution, retaining their distinctive sound while pushing it to bold and fascinating new boundaries. Take a chance on it if you want to hear something new, exciting, and gorgeous.

This album covers a large spectrum of musical genres spanning from Baroque to Late 20th Century. I think that this album would be a valuable addition to any tubist's listening collection. Alan Baer has not only chosen excellent literature, but plays with wonderful tone and attention to detail. I am particularly fond of the transcribed flute sonata.

        13. Lindy Hop Deluxe Suite - West Coast Strut Remix

        Album Description

Combining styles, such as hip-hop infused swing, this is a different excursion than their last two efforts. "Lindy Hop Deluxe Suite" is a six part journey in the form of abstract impressions of each major dance style that has been visited within the last few years as a part of the swing resurgence. G-Clef got the idea of presenting some original music as a backdrop to inspire the swing dancer as the soloist, originally to improvise as the music was played for the very first time. The suite was originally presented at one of the Lindy Hop scene's most prestigious events, the American Lindy Hop Championships, on October 27th, 2002, in Stamford, Connecticut. The movements of the suite cover every style from "Savoy Style" to "West Coast", and the challenge is to create a creative communion between the dancers and the musicians. The second half of the album is strictly smooth swingin' covers based upon all G-Clef's swing band experience with the likes of the late Panama Francis, the late Lionel Hampton, as well as great tenor saxophonist Illinois Jacquet, with whom G-Clef served as Lea! d Alto on and off for twelve years. All the songs on this Hounds' album are dedicated to and arranged for the dancers. The band will be available to perform the "Lindy Hop Deluxe Suite" for swing dance clubs and societies worldwide.

        Customer Reviews:

        4 out of 5 stars Deluxe Indeed.......2004-08-25

The title of the Yallopin' Hounds CD "Lindy Hop Deluxe," is enough to make any seasoned swing dancer say "we'll see about that." This band obviously gears itself toward dancers, and is attempting with this album to be socially conscious of the music's evolution, and its synergy with swing dancers. The sound of the Yallopin' Hounds might be likened to sax-ified jump blues as seen through the eyes of David Lynch during his Twin Peaks days. The melodic riffs can be slightly haunting, but maybe that's what you get when you're being thoughtful and reflective in a composition like this. The first six tracks of the CD, while all separate song titles, are meant to be perceived like a classically inspired suite that takes the listener through the history and complexity of swing dancing. The dreamy movements seem to hit on every idea, starting with Savoy Style Lindy Hop, and visiting ideas as nouveau as Hip Hop Lindy or as established as West Coast Swing. Of the initial six cuts, "Raw Shuffle" creates a classic (if a little dark) feeling within the framework of the ensembles' musical range, "Orbit Me" is both magical and strange, and easily one of this writer's favorite "alternative" musical experiments in this genre, and "Hip Hop Lindy" may have you breaking out into the robot. "West Coast Strut" is a jump blues/big band ensemble playing like a funk band, and the thirteenth track on this CD is a remix of the same song, for those remix loving dancers. It's good tempo west coast music, but not quite as "pop music-like" as some of the westie crowd might like. This suite was first presented in its entirety at the American Lindy Hop Championships in 2002. The remaining tracks of the CD seem to dig into the experience of yalloppin' mastermind G-Clef and his work with passed on swing band luminaries. "Stolen Sweets" and "Black Velvet" are excellent smooth lindy cuts, as is a lengthy version of "Pennies from Heaven." For the up-tempo music fan, "Stitches" is superb, along with a Lionel Hampton tribute in "Flying Home." The Yallopin' Hounds may have achieved something in swing similar to Lou Reed in the world of rock music, this material is both advanced and reflective, and surely worthy of the "deluxe" label.

5 out of 5 stars The next level of Swing.......2003-08-07

Lindy Hop Deluxe is an ambitious and beautiful project that showcases not only the Yalloppin Hounds musical versatility but also shows G-Clef's incredible arranging abilities.

The dues he paid spending years in Big Bands really paid off and shows through beautifully here.

This consists of a movement in 6 parts (Lindy Hop Deluxe) as well as some cover tunes into which the Hounds breathe new life. It also includes a remix of the catchy and danceable West Coast Strut which is part of the movement.

Vocalists Melissa Kate Miller and Peter Hartmann turn in solid performances. Lee Hogans and Mark McGowan turn in great performances on trumpet (esp. McGowan's performance on Taffy, which is one of the reviewer's personal favorites on this disc).
Julian Pressley and G-Clef turn in breathtaking solos and performances on sax. Marlon Sobol and Peter Hartmann keep the rhythm moving on bass and percussion respectively.
New-comer Ensar Kabil also glides along on keys.

If you are a dance afficianado or just a swing and/or jazz lover than this is a perfect disc to add to your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Creativity in the Dance.......2003-07-28

I was there in CT when this music was premiered. It was incredible then and even better now that the listener gets to really sit down and listen to LHD Suite as well as just cut a rug to it. Those into Lindy Hop will recognize, (or perhaps not) immediately, the various styles of swing dance that are suggesting by this vignette of musical abstraction. Also on this one are a bunch of the Yalloppin' Hounds classic dance covers, relief from the creative challenge that came before.... I especially like their rendition of Stolen Sweets by Organist Wild Bill Davis. This is swing music of today, of the highest musical calibre. If not the best Hounds LP, definitely their most unique to date!

5 out of 5 stars Another brilliant release from Todd Durrant.......2006-07-23

I am rather thankful for the devotion Todd Durrant has for modern synth; this release is indeed well worth placement in your collection. From the darkwave lustre of Intricated and Pulcher Femina, whose respective releases I sought all as a result of this synth anthology to the Depeche Mode simulacrum of Perfidious Words (post-Violator era), I well-enjoyed this and the companion "State of Synthpop 2003". Of the reviewer who condemned the release I might only write that one should probably discredit his opinion as misguided.

1 out of 5 stars Waste of time/money.......2006-07-20

There's a reason that each artist on this compilation only has one song on it--it's because after you hear the song, you're going to find yourself secretly wishing you never have to listen to anything recorded by them ever again.

I'm a tolerant person, but this comp. really pushed me over the edge. In addition to being just plain bad, some of the songs were so amateur-ish that the vocals were even recorded out of tune at certain points. I gritted my teeth and listened to all 6 cds. I assure you I won't make that mistake again.

Unless I want a good laugh.
