5 out of 5 stars nu jazz.......2007-04-03

Anyone who like any of Jazzanova's CD's will enjoy this. Buy the Secret Love CD's for a glimpse at their influence and direction. They have fabulous rythym and insight.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful surprise.......2006-03-23

I had never heard of this group until I ran accross a review of their music in a magazine I was reading. I decided to take a chance and...WOW! I loved it! Great music with a wonderful mix of jazz and R&B. I am definitly looking into buying more of their music.

5 out of 5 stars The Vocals. The Beats. The Blank CD........2005-12-26

Great companion to their earlier Remixes CD. Terrific vocal performances. Beats that stay interesting. Change-ups that crackle with energy. All with a deep, chill attitude and unmistakeable groove.

But where Jazzanova really breaks new ground is the inclusion of a blank "DIY" CD-R. The accompanying text invites you to either: use that blank CD to rip a copy for a friend(!!!); or to go online, download some special Jazzanova tracks and burn 'em to the CD-R for yourself. Now that's cool...

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I love these guys!!!.......2007-01-02

At first I did not know anything about LAGQ. I was taking an intro to guitar class on the campus of USC. One of my assignments was to attend two guitar performances happening on campus and write about each. I was so fortunate to have picked LAGQ. I fell in love with their music and their humor. I was amazed by the variety of sounds coming out of the guitars. Although guitar playing is a hobby for me... these guys inspire me to study the guitar more seriously. This is the first album of theirs I bought. Their rendition of Shenandoah is the best. It is so beautiful I fall asleep to it. Simple Gifts is the most lovely version too. Jumpin' at the Woodside is another favorite... it jazzy bounce makes it a popular choice for background music to any situation. The Main Street Electrical Parade never fails to delight me and surprise my friends when I play it. These guys are silly...but in a good way. Its 2007 now and I still go back to the songs on this album. Great variety. This is a good starter to a LAGQ collection. Go see them live if you can!!!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent album.......2004-11-23

Recently I learned about LAGQ and bought this album. I have been impressed by the arrangements and interpretation, the texture, innovative touches and originality. It is a treat!

3 out of 5 stars This is only a warning.......2004-09-19

The LAGQ are fine players, and the music here is first rate as a summary of what they do, or for any purpose. HOWEVER, the transfer to CD on my disc was very poorly chosen, so that the top octave and a half was mostly missing (worse on some pieces than others, though). This takes the snap! out of guitar strings and notably attenuates your ability to tell what the 4 are doing with guitar timbre and the like. So, if you have wide-range audio gear, you might want to look elsewhere for an introduction to these players.

5 out of 5 stars Recent Purchase that I'm Joyed to Find and Enjoy.......2001-01-27

Not until recently did I know about this guitar four. Hearing a number of their songs on internet classical radio, I decided I'd try this one.

What a great surprise --- their arrangements of Copeland to Sousa to Praetorius are excellent and in taste. I'll be venturing into their other works.

5 out of 5 stars Simply Amazing.......2000-06-12

LAGQ is wonderful and this CD is a great compilation of some of their best work to date. Extremely versatile musicians, they perform swing music, Sousa march music, a Main Street Electrical Parade tune from Disneyland, as well as music by Copland and Praetorius. It's amazing how they are able to produce the sounds they do. A great compilation and one that would nicely add to your LAGQ collection or a great CD to start that collection!

4 out of 5 stars Curious and Modern Inventions.......2007-05-03

The phrase "Italian baroque violin music" no longer conjures up exclusively the music of Corelli and Vivaldi, thanks to recordings such as this one by the English baroque ensemble Romanesca. As Romanesca has shown us in disc after disc of Biber, Schmelzer, and other composers, 17th-century violin music is an exciting antidote to the sewing-machine facility of the later Italian baroque. This disc takes us to the first half of the 17th century, when the violin had recently acquired its modern form with the Amatis and other makers, and composers were starting to develop a distinctive idiom for the new instrument. Perhaps the most distinguished of these early violin composers was Biagio Marini (c.1587-1663) of Brescia, a violinist at San Marco in Venice who played under Monteverdi's direction.

The compositions on this disc are from three different Marini publications: opus 3, 8, and 22 (his last published collection). They fall under three types: pieces for solo violin and continuo, trio sonatas, and dances and other short pieces for string quartet (!) with continuo. Among the highlights are the SONATA QUARTA for violin (track 6, an attempt to adapt vocal monody, the expressive recitative of early opera, to instrumental terms); ROMANESCA (track 7), based on a ground bass shared with "Greensleeves"; the 12-minute PASS'E MEZO (track 15), a prismatic variations piece; and especially the poignant, eloquent PASSACAGLIO (track 8). Everywhere, Marini's harmonic boldness and his distinctive, bittersweet lyricism are in evidence.

Early baroque music often looks plain on the page but yields expressive riches through an imaginative interpretation; violinist Andrew Manze and his colleagues (including John Toll on harpsichord and Nigel North on chitarrone) illustrate this beautifully. Their commitment to giving the pieces coherent shape through dynamics, expression, and other means is clear. This is especially relevant for the solo violin sonatas, which on the page look like haphazard splotches of sound but emerge here as arresting, highly expressive utterances. Manze's flamboyant style is appropriate to the sonatas, but his expressive range is wide: compare his lovely, silky tone in the beginning of the ROMANESCA with the rapid, prickly divisions at the end of the piece. I have only a few reservations. I could have wished for a little more "affective embellishment" in the PASSACAGLIO, which is nonetheless performed in an appropriately grave and muted manner. I regretted the absence of a beautiful C major trio sonata from opus 22. And in general the succession of miniature ensemble pieces - as fine as they are - created a somewhat unsatisfying impression, making one wish for one or two more long compositions.

This disc is a fine place to start for anyone interested in exploring the instrumental side of the 17th-century Italian STIL MODERNO.

5 out of 5 stars Great Music - Great Price.......2005-07-18

The period-instrument ensemble Romanesca performs works from Curiose & Moderne Inventioni, Op.12, and other publications by Biagio Marini (c1587-1663).

"You won't regret ordering this cd. The sounds are light and alive, but never overwhelming. Romanesca does not try to "prove" itself with this record. The music speaks for itself, with low moods displayed as such, and as said, high moods never so high, loud and fast that you feel you must turn down your player. Now that's a rare cd!" (Anonymous, Amazon.com)

4 out of 5 stars Nowhere - Can I Go.......2007-06-21

I am already a fan of Jazzanova, AtJazz, and Viktor Duplaix so knowing they all had a had in Clara's followup to Restless Times made it an instant BUY for me. It is a really good cd and should not be slept on.

My current favorites are:

2. Nowhere - Can I Go (w/AtJazz - All I can say is 'Oh My'. It gave me shivers!! Kind of stays on repeat.)
5. Hard to Say (w/Slope - I'm liking Slope and I enjoyed driving with one on)
6. Paper Chase (w/Viktor Duplaix - Love his voice)
7. Just Paradise (w/Georg Levin)
8. Just Let Me Know (w/Tonee and Slope - Sweet n Sexy)

All in all this cd is simply beautiful.

4 out of 5 stars Soulful & Contemplative.......2007-01-13

Definitely worth getting if you like Jazzanova, Vikter Duplaix, and George Levin. Another solid release from the Jazzanova camp....even better than her last release "Restless".

5 out of 5 stars "gran muestra de nuevo groove".......2005-07-13

5 out of 5 stars Excellent ... Buy in NOW .... !!!.......2005-02-14

Excellent Mix, brilliant track selection, Fantastic production & its jazzanova, some of the best acid jazz (i have heard in a loooong time) ... Do you need more reasons ?

A Long Walk by Jill Scott is fantastic ...

5 out of 5 stars Jazzanova Top Themselves With a Stellar DJ Mix CD........2004-08-08

A mix of chilled jazz, nu soul, a dash of hip hop, live instruments, and some electro and retro grooves make up the salad bowl that is "Mixing" by Berlin's Jazzanova, a great selection of tunes for that last-minute get together. Jill Scott sets the tone with her "Touch of Jazz" mix of "A Long Walk" before we cruise through twin soulful gems "Can't Get Away (From Your Love)" by Carol Williams and "The Quest" by Attica Blues. Jazzanova throw into the set a couple grooves of their own, including the retro 80s feel of "Let Your Heart Be Free" and jazzy vibes of the percussion/horn-heavy "Dance the Dance." The tempo eventually simmers down with relaxing slow jams: the ambient "Try" by Sidsel Endersen and Bugge Wesseltoft and Georg Levin's "Let There Be Love." Filler-free and with no real duds, "Mixing" shows Jazzanova at the top of their game.

5 out of 5 stars Mixing.... and remixing it's a five stars again..........2004-07-23

Before to start to review i think it's necessary to know the tracks :
1)jill scott - a long walk
2)jazznova - l.o.v.e. beats
3)dimlite - sponsored by the alphabet
4)phoojun - rainbow
5)carol williams - can't get away
6)attica blues (feat r. robinson) - the quest
7)jazzanova feat nicola kramer, clara hill e g. levin - let your heart be free
8)jazznova - glow and glare
9)oba funke - uzoamaka (acappella)
10)deyampert feat clover from amraah 8 - held him first
11)jazzanova - dance the dance (at jazz remix)
12) bakura - thinking about (domu mix)
13)slope - mousse (get down mix)
14)bahamadia - uknowhowwedo (ski remix)
15) extended spirit - siding
16)sidsel endresen &bugge wesseltoft - try
17)george levin - let there be love
The people from Berlin again are here with a beautiful CD.
Starting from a pearl from JILL SCOTT (a cool r&b)coming to the last "sweet" from George Levin.
In the middle Attica Blues, Jazzanova and Bakura are the tops.
A little less than the others the second and third songs.
Strange to find in this Cd a song like TRY, but this is the job of the JAZZANOVA...put all togheter and mix and remix....at the end you probably get the five stars...
If you want dance and relax with r&b, and nu jazz this is for you.

5 out of 5 stars Jazzanova must buy.......2007-05-12

Wow what a stunner! Best LP I've bought in a good long time. I came to Jazzanova late but made up for lost time. For me this is easily their best work which is saying a lot. If you like Jazzanova you will love this. I insist you buy it right now! Is it NuJazz? NuJazzSoul? New Electronica-Jazz? Nu Jazz-Hop? Electronica Soul-Hop? As I listen to it it now... I'm still in awe... Excelsior playing now... It is indisputably modern, but rarely challenging. There is a crispness about Jazzanova... That Berlin edge? It's like they love Jazz but refuse to be retro-dated. Thinking people's Electronica? No flash in the pan beats or slick plastic pop here. The 'In the (Re)mix" lyric "And you wonder why it's takin' a fall?" seems to speak directly to this point. I've made a couple party CDs with it and the peeps just love it. "It's what we do... It's what we dooo". Groove on my friends.

5 out of 5 stars A fine label mix by label mates of a very exciting label........2007-01-16

Funky German nu jazz superstars Jazzanova bring together a whopping collection of current Sonar Kollektiv tracks. There's something for everyone on here, from hip hop, to nu jazz, to soulful jazz, to tech house. It's a great representation of what this very diverse and superb label is cranking out these days. They have always been at the top of the nu jazz scene, as well as sneaking in all other types of genres into their repertoire. From their top vocal diva Clara Hill, to tech house monsters Âme, to their main staple artists over the years, Wahoo, Slope, Capital A, and Fat Freddy's Drop, Jazzanova manages to uniquely mold everything to the point that even the near misses work.

Piffaro discs make this sedentary fool want to get up and dance. Renaissance dance music is a much-underrated source of general delight, anyway. You don't have to be the kind of specialist listener who loves medieval masses to get a kick out of this tasty, highly rhythmic music--the disco of an earlier era. The tunes are appealing, the sounds of the varied instruments consistently delightful. I rate discs of Renaissance dances not so much by their authenticity, a debatable matter anyway, but rather by their danceability. Piffaro discs rank consistently high in this respect, and they are realistically recorded. --Leslie Gerber

5 out of 5 stars Triumphant!.......2006-12-01

This is truly one of the best albums of Renaissance music currntly available! Purely instrumental! Much of it appears to be music for a royal court event or the like, with much use of brass and wind instruments. There are also many selections for the festival setting, usually involving the bagpipes and hurdy-gurdy. Too many albums of ancient music "pad" the content with monotonous choral polyphonic selections, perhaps starting out with one or two really good instrumental pieces. However, they did not do that in this one!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Renaissance Faire. Buy it!.......2005-11-15

'Piffaro The Renaissance Band' is a Philadelphia group who has done several superior albums of Renaissance music for the label 'Archiv', late of Deutche Grammaphone, now part of Polygram. I was astonished when I heard from a student of one of the directors, Robert Wiemken, that the band is paid virtually nothing to make the record and have it distributed. While I would expect that from a minor label, it is surprising that an act should make it to Deutche Grammaphone and not be paid for their recording. I go into this minor digression because I am especially impressed by this recording and all their others as well.

I do take issue with it's being labelled a recording of 'wind' music, as there is ample representation from the family of string instruments, most famously the guitar and the hurdy gurdy.

Although I really enjoy 'old music', I'm not an expert on it, but I set out to distinguish this music from modern stuff, and the two I can find are the presence here of a lot of drone instruments such as the bagpipe and the hurdy gurdy and the absence of instruments such as the clarinet which give us that lushly woody tenor we hear in pieces such as 'Rapsody in Blue' or in some of Kurt Weill's German stage pieces. We also certainly miss the rich sounds of the piano, as the pianoforte has not been invented yet.

If you like old music, this band is a 'must hear'!

Simply lovely. Some whimsical, some more technically serious. In all, definitely worth the money and the time. One of my new favorites.

5 out of 5 stars Superb musicianship on ancient instruments...........2001-10-03

I wish composers were still writing for hurdy-gurdy @ crumhorn...what a wonderful sound. I especially liked "La Parma". I do believe a modern tunesmith has taken that melody @ recently made a rather haunting popular song from it; a female vocalist, I think. If anyone out there can remember what the name of that modern tune is @ will post it here, it will save me some on-going mental annoyance. You won't go wrong in buying this album!

5 out of 5 stars Piffaro Renaissance Band Superb.......2001-05-20

This CD has me dancing in the streets. I have played holes in the recording. The musicianship is extraordinary with excitement, love and a great warm sense of pleasure taken by everyone involved. Renaissance instruments are not generally known for subtlety or nuance, but these players work miracles. The percussion sections are also integral to the whole and thrilling, where appropriate. Piffaro, please keep your music coming.

5 out of 5 stars Ever wondered what was before Bach, Lully, or Palestrina?.......2007-04-29

During the days of the Renaissance, the madrigal was one
of the most popular musical forms and outputs. The King's Singers, a modern-day all male vocal group, demonstrate the authentic sound of which these 34 chosen madrigals may have been performed. In the Renaissance, in place of sopranos and altos, there were countertenors (men who sang falsetto in a feminine range). That's what these guys do; just listen to the first few and you'll automatically be transported back to this magical and sort of other-worldly time. If you've been to Renaissance fairs, it will make you think of those, too.

The King's Singers offer 34 well-chosen madrigals from composers like John Dowland, Hans Leo Hassler, Clement Jannequin and some composers who wished to remain anonymous. They are grouped by the different languages to show that the madrigal wasn't just the rage in Italy where it had originated but at various other places all over Europe, the hub of the music world. The Italian ones come first, then in English, French, Spanish and German. The best one in the set is "La Guerre" which runs 6 minutes, and is an incredible vocal showpiece. It's even very funny at times.

If you want to hear exactly how Renaissance madrigals sound, this is the real deal.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Lushly beautiful jazzy folk -- almost too pretty, but irresistable.......2007-06-24

Aside from the lyrics (sincere and simple to the point of utter inanity) I like this a lot. Some of the songs are a bit too bland, but the harmonies and instrumentation are rich and complex and Sascha has a fine, gentle, directly emotive voice. I find myself listening to this whole album much more than others I was more turned on by at first -- it has grown on me, even though I feel a bit embarrassed by its easy-listening vibe. Hold On, Hold On, the single, is a more dynamic cut (fun, kind-of-flamenco-sounding percussion and guitars) and probably the best place to start. There is also a gorgeous Thief song (The Siren's Call) on Jazzanova's Belle and Fou -- another very good album, much more mixed in terms of genre.

4 out of 5 stars Good Nu-Folk.......2007-03-28

Wondering if here's officially a genre now? Nu-folk? Maybe it is, and if so, how fitting that the likes of Jazzanova would be behind this particular brainchild. I first heard Thief off of one of Jazzanova's early compilations with Sonar Kollektiv in 2004 titled "Secret Love", a view on folk as ddone by Jazzanova and Resoul. Thief was one of the artists there and pretty much epitomized the sort of vibe they were looking at since there was a growing number of artists blending more modern electronic styles with established folk elements.

To be honest I was a little skeptical, but the album is really good. I always liked "If There was a Love", which has a really pure guitar and percussion sound to it and Sasha's voice won't necessary blow you over but it's not really supposed to - it was perfect for the song. This album though starts out with the title track, and it's a wonderful song tapping into folk roots from the very first note. But as the song starts, you immediately feel the slightly broken beat as only Jazzanova's artists can arrange. Good stuff. "Atlantic" is another one that I really enjoyed, great lyrics which actually link well with the moodiness of the song which rises and falls like a wave. Really nicely done there. Other songs I enjoyed were "Home", which featured in Secret Love II from last year, and I also enjoyed "Leaves". The album does a good job of blending a few different musical styles with guitar and electronica to provide a good folksih vibe overall.

I recommend this, but I'd be careful for traditional Jazzanova or Compost Label fans as it's a different project. I'd say the best way to approach it is open and expecting something different. Also, this isn't an album to listen to if you're trying to get extremely motivated. It's very laid back, reflective and melancholic. Not all of the songs wowed me and a few were just a bit too brooding, but overall I'd say this was a good one. For fans of folk that know the classic genre much much better than me, I'd love to get a tip on what this sounds like... there was an artist from the late 60's or 70's that this clearly mimmicks but I can't remember the name of the artist or the song... it's driving me mad! Anyways, if you like this, check out the Secret Love series and maybe works from 4Hero and Blue States first two albums.

Careful on the price of this one. I tend to like the hard copies, but you can download this for 1/3 of the price I see here & maybe less.
