1 out of 5 stars hard core madonna fans only.......2003-07-23

if you have the soundtrack to Evita, then you have this CD. Unless you want eveyr single Madonna record ever released, just get the soundtrack. The other singles from Evita aren't useless, since You Must Love Me's title track is longer than the album version and Don't Cry For ME Argentina has the dance remixes

4 out of 5 stars Another Fantastic Single From The Evita Soundtrack.......2003-07-20

Madonna released only one song in 1997. It was called Another Suitcase In Another Hall, and peaked at No.7 in the UK in March 1997 spending just five weeks on the chart. It was the third and final single to be taken from the soundtrack to the hit film Evita, in which Madonna starred as Eva Peron. With lyrics by Tim Rice and music by Andrew Lloyd-Webber, this is a good song, but definitely not a Madonna classic.

Another Suitcase In Another Hall begins softly with a Spanish guitar and drums, then Madonna starts singing the first verse, "I don't expect my love affairs to last for long. Never fool myself that my dreams will come true. Being used to trouble I anticipate it, but all the time I hate it. Wouldn't you?" Madonna's vocals are high-pitched and glorious after vocal preparation for the role of Eva Peron in the film. Madonna then sings the chorus, "So what happens now? (Another suitcase in another hall) So what happens now? (Take your picture off another wall) Where am I going to? (You'll get by, you always have before) Where am I going to?" Madonna then begins to sing the second verse, "Time and time again I've said that I don't care. That I'm immune to gloom. That I'm hard through and through. But everytime it matters all the words desert me. So anyone can hurt me and they do." Madonna then sings the chorus once more, before singing, "Call in three months' time and I'll be fine. I know. Well maybe not that fine but I'll survive anyhow. I won't recall the names and places of each sad occasion. But that's no consolation here and now." Madonna then sings the chorus once more before 'Huevo' sings "Don't ask anymore." The song then ends.

The video to Another Suitcase In Another Hall is the performance that Madonna gives in the film. It follows the videos to You Must Love Me and Don't Cry For Me Argentina in a similar style that they are from the same movie, and Madonna is dressed brilliantly in glorious clothes and fine jewellery. All in all, a catchy and melodic songs from Madonna with a fairly good video to match.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful Karita.......2001-04-01

Karita Mattila is a total package. You enjoy her whole performance, even though it's (mainly) her glittering, emotion-filled lyric-dramatic soprano voice behing the growing success. A major review of a recent London recital with an ambitious programme started with descriptions of her appearance & costumes: the tall blond Venus from the North, a new Garbo! - Catch her live, opera or concert, if you can.

Madonna looked the glamorous Eva Peron in film. Mattila could have, and she's a far better actress. She makes Evita her own in Don't Cry for Me Argentina in this recording. What a Kate on stage she would make in Porter's Kiss Me Kate (a sultry, athletic tongue-in-cheek feminist): listen to Wunderbar. Not all the material is ideally suited (I Could Have Danced All Night). But in songs like Tango d'amor and Nur nicht aus Liebe winen (the bittersweet Theo Mackeben song of the Zarah Leander fame) the voice, temper, music and her enjoyment in performing are perfectly matched.

The Ondine production is classy, and the Tapiola Sinfonietta orchestra supports the star in lush orchestrations. -Don't be missguided by the poorly styled cover photo where she looks a 50's German operetta singer, she's much more alive:)

3 out of 5 stars Only interesting for the fragments of Evita's speeches.......2004-01-01

"Evita: Quien Quiera Oir Que Oiga" is the soundtrack to an Argentine movie based on the life of Eva Peron, former first lady of Argentina. (The title, by the way, is Spanish for, "Those Who Care to Listen, Listen.") The music is mediocre at best. The only attractive thing about this CD, which I bought in Argentina in 1993 while participating in a student exchange program, is that it contains two brief portions of speeches by the real Eva Peron. Both tracks are roughly a minute in length.

Track 5: "Fragmento del Discurso Pronunciado Por Eva Perón" - This is a fragment of the historic dialogue between Evita and the "Descamisados" (the Peronists of Argentina) that took place on August 22nd, 1951, in the Plaza de Mayo, in front of the Argentine capitol building, La Casa Rosada. Evita is pleading with the crowd to allow her a few days to make up her mind as to whether she'll run for vice president of the nation. They demand that she give her answer to them now, threatening to go on strike if she does not. The exchange is intense. You've never heard anything like it in Anglo-Saxon politics. It is a true dialogue between a chorus of people and their political leader. You can hear Evita's voice become hoarse from the strain of yelling. She has a deep, commanding voice. The crowd is estimated at two million. Never before in history had a female political figure drawn such a huge crowd. (For pictures of this historic event, I recommend EVITA: AN INTIMATE PORTRAIT OF EVA PERON.)

Track 11: "Fragmento del Mensaje de Eva Perón Irradiado" - This is a speech delivered by Evita on September 28, 1951, from her bed in the presidential palace. (She is in bed because the cancer has made it difficult for her to stand.) Juan Peron's opponents in the military had attempted a coup earlier on this day, but members of the CGT - a group of unions - had thwarted the attempt. Evita thanks the Peronists over the radio, and asks them to pray for Peron, and asks for prayers that God may give her back her health. She says that she does not want her health back for her own sake, but to help Peron and the people: "Para mi no hay otra cosa en el mundo que el amor de Peron y de mi pueblo" ("For me, nothing in this world matters but the love of Peron and the people."). She soon breaks into tears.

If you want to hear rare, although brief, recordings of the voice of the real Eva Peron, then I recommend buying, "Evita: Quien Quiere Oir Que Oiga." The other tracks on this CD are not memorable.

      4 out of 5 stars Great Songs!.......2002-08-06

I don't own this CD, but I have 95% of the songs in it on other CD's. They are all great melodies. My only concern is, that I do not know if the Edmundo Rivero recordings were his older ones when his voice was fantastic (40's to early 50's), or newer recordings when he had just about lost his voice. Barring that, I would definitely recommend getting this CD because it contains more tangos from the "golden age" than any other compilation CD I have seen. Again, the melodies are great!

5 out of 5 stars A Treasure Trove of Classics.......2001-04-12

Fans of tango as sung in the 1940s will be delighted with this well-chosen compilation of mostly vocal classics, some of which are well-known and others which should be. Though Anibal Troilo's orchestra, arguably the top tango group of its time, is featured on nearly half of the pieces, he used many different singers so there is a lot of flavor here. My favorites here are Naranjo En Flor, Vida Mia, Uno, Sur, Paciencia, and Ventanita Florida. Such celebrated singers as Floreal Ruiz, Alberto Marino, Edmundo Rivero, Alberto Echague, Libertad Lamarque, and Nelly Omar are featured, offering a little something to everyone. If you are a fan of the old styles, you will love this treasure trove of classics as there is not a loser in the group.

      5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Find.......2001-02-12

I have been collecting tango music for some years. This little known CD of classic 1940's recordings is one of my most listened to favorites.

There are a vast number of tango anthologies, many of them mediocre at best. Some are downright awful. This one is superior in all aspects. Don't confuse it with the musical play and movie Evita!(which has charms of its own, but contains little tango), it's something else entirely.

Assembled by Gabriel Soria of the National Tango Academy of Argentina, it evokes the time of the real Eva Peron, notorious and glamorous wife of the populist President Juan Peron. Leaning heavily on the works of Anibal Troilo, but including many other notable artists of the time, the real Argentine tango is found here. Even though the original recordings were made a half century ago, the production values of this CD are quite high and the sound quality is excellent.

Close your eyes, and you'll find yourself in a Buenos Aires nightclub of the 40's. The underlying tension is of power and the way of a man with a woman. Buy this CD, and you'll visit that nightclub often.

It would be nice if..... would include some samples of the music for you to hear, but for now this review will have to do.
