Sarah Brightman's career was launched by her success in Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantom of the Opera, so it's no surprise to hear the soprano paying homage to the composer on this disc. Really a Brightman best-of, the album includes the Phantom theme (a duet with Michael Crawford), the light-opera fare of "Chanson D'enfance" from Aspects of Love, "Don't Cry for Me, Argentina" from Evita, and numerous other Lloyd Webber classics. Throughout, Brightman's diminutive voice lends a fragility to these musical theater tunes that you'll either love or despise. Sarah Brightman has always been a favorite of mine, and this CD is outstanding. The duet with Jose Carreras (Friends for Life) is especially good--worth buying the CD for that song alone.

The Best You'll See from Sarah.......2006-09-09

This CD is - wow! I have so much to say about it and so little time! This album features three pieces from "The Phantom of the Opera" - Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again, The Music of the Night, and The Phantom of the Opera theme. They're all beautiful. The second piece on the album is "Unexpected Song". It has beautiful octaves and orchastrations. Chanson d'Efance is an amazing French piece with vibrato - and then some. I forgot to mention that there is another piece from The Phantom of the Opera - All I Ask of You - except that the song is not sung by the original cast from the musical. The next few pieces are fairly decent, until you get to Memory from Cats. WOW - is it spectacular! Then we get to two other pieces from Cats - Gus: The Theater Cat and Macavity: The Mystery Cat. Gus is a song that just tells about a cat and his history. A man speaks the lines that Gus would say in the actual musical - and it makes the song interesting. Macavity is AWESOME! I know that I said that I didn't prefer this song for Brightman on her album "Surrender". I finally listened to it more carefully, and found that it's really interesting to listen to! My favorite song on the whole entire album - however - has to be "Tell Me on a Sunday". Beautiful lyrics, orchestrations, and overall spectacular voice talent ties the whole song together. Pie Jesu is a fairly nice piece from both Brightman and Paul Miles-Kingston - the 16 year old boy soprano. His voice is pure and straight with minimal vibrato. However, Brightman's voice shows a little bit TOO much vibrato! Overally, it's a good piece from Andrew Lloyd Webber's Requium. THIS CD IS AMAZING! If you love Sarah from the Phantom of the Opera, then this collection of Lloyd Webber's work is just for you.

I also recommend Charlotte Church - (in her earlier career) - including Voice of an Angel and her self-titled album. I also recommend Love Changes Everything - The Andrew Lloyd Webber Collection Vol.2 - just another grouping of Webber's classics. I also recommend Andrea Boucelli - he's awesome!

Better than recents latin cd, but waiting the new english cd by Jose..........2007-01-15

I like this album, for me better from his recent latin albums (A Mexico con amor and senor Bolero 1 & 2), this is a partial return of his latin album of 80s ever produced by Rudy but with new duets with latin stars. Very nice just is duet with Rudy Perez in "cosas del Amor" and some other like with Alicia Villareal in "Que Nadie Sepa Mi Sufrir" and in the been know duet with Marc Anthony "Oye Guitarra Mia". But Jose however is the best and his solo performance in modern pop rythm are ever greats, especially in "Fuerte No Soy" and "Por Mujeres Como Tu", and however in his voice, guitar (again in spanish album... so little used! No instrumentals or solo fast part in songs) and... great how Jose play so well the "concertina"!
Anyway this spanish album is "to have", but certainly I advice to buy before his contemporary new 2007 english album now on market here, "Sountrack of My Life", 17 songs write by him: Jose in these english album can finally leave his soul and arts totally frees more than spanish album, and more he can show how He is the most incredible guitarist in this world: buy both album for know the complete Jose Feliciano-

Siempre se corren riesgos cuando se hacen discos de duetos como en este caso, para fortuna del oyente es agradable el acoplamiento de los invitados ya q cada uno combina con Feliciano de una manera extraordinaria, es un disco hecho de corazón cantado con sentimientos, he de reconocer la gran labor de Rudy Pérez en la producción, es un disco con distintas vertientes q al final desembocan a la escencia del gran talento y maestría q solo José Feliciano tiene, siempre lo diré es una lástima q la industria lo tenga relegado y no se le de el reconocimiento q se merece.... Solo les recuerdo q el fue el primer latino en triunfar en E.U y el primer artista en realizar el Crossover así como el único en ganar Grammys tanto en español como en inglés así q juzguen y ojalá algún día se haga justicia.

The critical debate over Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical legacy will no doubt rage for decades. Is he the shrewd populist composer who almost single-handedly revived the moribund stage musical--or a crass, Barnum-esque showman (who almost single-handedly revived the moribund stage musical)? This 18-track anthology chronicles the high points of Sir Andrew's enduring songcraft and the irrefutable impact it's made across a remarkably disparate swath of tastes and genres, from Broadway to Top 40 radio and even the classical repertoire.

If some have accused Lloyd Webber's songs--like "The Music of the Night" (from Phantom of the Opera) and the title tune from Whistle Down the Wind, included here--of having all the melodic and lyrical sophistication of a children's lullaby, that's likely the very element that's made them so appealing to a mass audience. If nothing else, it's a compelling argument for that old notion about it being "the singer, not the song." Indeed, there are few contemporary composers whose music could entice divas from Streisand ("As If We'd Never Said Goodbye" from Sunset Blvd.) to Madonna (Evita's "You Must Love Me") and Charlotte Church ("Pie Jesu" from Requiem) to cover it, let alone forge the very careers of artists like Sarah Brightman and Michael Crawford. This cd is a must have for any Webber fan. It has many great songs from his most sucsessful musicals. But something I don't like about this cd is that some of the singer how sings some of the songs arn't the onse that sings the originals. Like "The Phantom Of The Opera" and "Love Changes Everything". Witch is so sad. Couse the original songs are so much better.
But besides that this cd is very good. With manye nice and difficult songs (I've sung some of the myself in siningclass).
So if you like Andrew's music this most sertanly is a most have.

The best of Webber.......2005-09-12

Although I like Andrew Llloyd Webber and his music very much, this collection earns only 4 stars and it's not because of the quality of the music but the level of performers. If a best of collection is made it should contain the best version ever done and this time it's not true. I could write the same review for the European edition (labeled import here) because the blend of the two would be a perfect best of.

Some examples: this version contains Memory sung by Betty Buckley while the Elaine Page version is light years better. Then it contains Patti Lupone's version of Don't Cry For Me Argentina. Even though Madonna wasn't the best Evita, she definitely sung Argentina in a way no-one could before or will ever. Whistle Down The Wind is represented with 3 songs - the place of the Tom Jones song is not here (the same could be said of Tina Arena's song o the European edition). Instead of the TJ song they could have included Take That Look Off Your Face by Marti Webb - one of the best songs by Webber. Pie Jesu from the Requiem is much better sung by Sarah Brightman. These are the faults.

What about the rest? Pure joy and material worth of 6 stars. Superstar, Phantom Of The Opera, Music Of The Night, I Don't Know How To Love Him, All I Ask Of You, No Matter What, Oh What A Circus - wonderful songs and wonderful performers. My all-time favorite from Webber will always be Music Of The Night and the version included here is the mesmerizing adaptation of Michael Crawford.

I don't advise anyone not to buy this album - it's good material, however it's far from being perfect.

THE BEST OF LLOYD WEBBER MADE FOR THE AMERICAN AUDIENCES.......2005-01-31

There are numerous compilations out on the market full of Andrew Lloyd Webber's music. As most people know, Lloyd Webber is the most successful musical composer of all time and many of his songs became standards not only in the theatre history, but also as tops on the charts. Even though he's British, his influence on the shape of the modern musical theatre expanded over the West End boundaries long ago and has thus made an enormous impact on Broadway. Two of his shows ("Cats" and "The phantom of the opera") hold the record as two the longest running shows in the history of Broadway. He has also been the only composer to have three of his shows running at Broadway concurrently. This compilation captures some of the best songs he has ever written, he personally supervised it and it is the best thing to have if you can't afford his five-CD compilation called "Now and forever", which was selected and supervised by him as well. You should bear in mind, however, that there are two compilations called Gold out there: The one made for the European and the British market, and this one, made for the American buyers. Some of the songs on both of them are the same, the others are performed by different artists and some can be found only in one of the two. This one here was issued later and it is digitally remastered. Therefore you should check your favourites and buy accordingly, or, if you can, buy them both, since both of them contain interesting songs and performers.

So here are my thoughts about the tracks in this one:

1. "Superstar" and "I don't know how to love him" are both from the concept album of "Jesus Christ Superstar". They sound wonderful as ever, although the orchestrations may seem a bit dated by now.

2. "Sunset Boulevard" is marked here with two songs. Barbra Streisand's powerful voice shines all the way through in "As if we never said goodbye"; it's a shame she never played Norma Desmond on Broadway, since Patti LuPone wasn't allowed to take her Norma to New York, and Glenn Close butchered the role. Her limited vocal abilities were hardly suited for the material, as it is shown by the second Sunset song, "The perfect year", performed by Close and Alan Campbell. They both lack a decent singing voice, so this is the one song I skip regularly. The song itself sounds much better in its single version with pops orchestration, as can be heard on the European version of this compilation, where it is performed by Dina Carroll. This version here can hardly be considered a gold one.

3. "The Phantom of the Opera" is represented by three songs. Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman performance in the song of the same title is amazing. They were both born to play their roles in this show and their voices fit together perfectly. Sarah can hit the high notes in the end like no other Christine. Cliff Richard and Sarah sing the lovely ballad "All I ask of you" with passion, and Cliff has a wonderful warmth in his voice. Finally, Michael Crawford gives his unique and mesmerising interpretation in "The music of the night".

4. The 1996 movie version of "Evita" is Madonna's best role to date and it brought an Academy Award for Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, who wrote "You must love me" especially for the big screen. This is another wonderful ballad with the haunting cello and piano solo. It just proves that Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice were the best collaborators. They really should do another musical together.

5. "The Joseph and his amazing Technicolor dreamcoat" was Webber's first musical and the signature song "Any dream will do" is performed here by Donny Osmond, who also appeared in the video version. I find his rendition even better than London's Jason Donovan, since Donny isn't strictly bound by the notes and so sings it more casually. A wonderful pop piece.

6."Memory" from "Cats" is probably the most famous of all Webber's songs, recorded by numerous artists. This version is sung by Betty Buckley, who was Broadway's Grizabella. Although Betty's performance can't be considered bad, I prefer Elaine Paige, who sung the song first, in the London production. Elaine has a note of sorrow in her at times husky voice, which I found very intriguing. Her performance can be considered definite, as heard on "Cats" DVD or in her latest two-disc compilation, "Centre stage: The very best of Elaine Paige", issued in May 2004. Still, those who prefer Ms. Buckley or who saw her on stage in this role won't be disappointed.

7. "Pie Jesu" is the best known song from Webber's "Requiem", written in 1985 to commemorate the death of his father. I'm not too keen on the version included here, performed by Charlotte Church, because her voice isn't as pretty as Sarah Brightman's on the original recording and the tempo is somewhat faster here.

8. "Don't cry for me Argentina" is among my all-time Lloyd Webber's favourites. I like all the ladies who performed "Evita" on the stage and on the screen (Julie Covington, Elaine Paige, Patti LuPone and Madonna), but on this disc is the version I am most satisfied with, since it is sung by Patti LuPone. Ms. LuPone has a very powerful voice with an amazing range and she deserved her Tony Award for this role. She was able to sound both vulnerable and decisive while singing this, whereas the other leading ladies emphasized one or the other in their interpretation. Mandy Patinkin's "Oh what a circus" is not the best, the orchestration is a little bit weak and his voice sounds thin to me. David Essex on the London cast recording is more suitable.

9. "Aspects of love" boast here with its top song, "Love changes everything", performed wonderfully by Michael Ball. It was his #1 hit and is probably one of the most beautiful love anthems ever written.

10. Three songs come from "Whistle down the wind". The studio release of the same title is one of the reasons I bought this compilation, although I already have the European one. It is performed by Sarah Brightman with Lloyd Webber playing the piano and a symphonic orchestra who nicely takes the lead of the main melody. Sarah voice is angelic; she sings it like a little bird. Very charming. Boyzone's "No matter what" was a huge pop hit in the charts. Again, we have a song with the suitable orchestrations and vocals. And lastly, Tom Jones' deep voice in combination with the back vocals of "The Sounds of Blackness" gives a rocking rendition of the church hymn "The vaults of heaven". It can't be found on the European version and Tom's voice shows it hasn't aged. Way to go.

11. For the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, Webber wrote, together with his long-time lyricist Don Black, this last song, "Amigos para siempre or Friends for life". It's a nice duet between Sarah Brightman and Jose Carreras, their voices sore when bound together. The melody itself is neat, especially when the orchestra takes the lead.

Besides the fact that some of the performers here were not the best for my taste, there is also the fact that some of Lloyd Webber's shows are omitted in this version, most notably, "Tell me on a Sunday". Also, unlike its European counterpart, this compilation isn't aligned chronologically, so we have 1970 Superstar being the first song, 1993 Sunset Blvd comes the second, followed by The Phantom from 1986 and so on. None the less, this CD is excellent as an introduction to Lloyd Webber's music and one can continue with his cast recordings from there. It's also very handy as a single disc compilation for the American fans.

Easy Does It.......2007-01-10

Passos has a lovely,wonderful tone, and these songs are
good for relaxation and soothing vibes. Carter is
one of the masters. I had hoped to hear a bit more of an
edge to Passos voice and to her approach, and I will look
at some of her other albums for this variance.

One of my favorite albums.......2006-12-12

I was turned on to jazz when I was very young by the album Getz/Gilberto which my mom would always play at cocktail parties. I was particularly entranced by the gentle beautiful melodies and the simple singing and guitar style of Gilberto on the album. 40 years later, it is still one of my favorite albums and musical styles.

I recently bought a brazilian compilation that included Rosa Passos and I immediately rushed to Amazon and bought a few of her albums, including this one. I was instantly drawn to this one from the fact that Ron Carter was on the album as I primarily listen to Jazz and he is one of the great bass players of all time.

I was not disappointed. This album is so pure and so gorgeous. Rosa is the best student of Gilberto I have ever found down to her lovely unadorned soulful voice and perfect swinging guitar. The stripped down slightly jazzy treatment she gets from Ron and her band are the perfect accompaniment because it serves to frame her voice and guitar so well. Of all the Rosa albums I have, this is my favorite because it is so unadorned and unproduced. (Have not listened to her newest album, which is just her and her guitar - so for purests, that may be even better :)

Listen to it whenever you want to feel joy and the feeling of being a million miles from home on a tropical beach somewhere. Pure pleasure.

I thought I had written enough reviews here at amazon.and this review is not really needed..you can read the review by "Carlos from Rio" which says it all.
Anyway....I never heard of Rosa Passos until 6 months ago when I heard her on radio and was so amazed..the very same way as when I heard Wes Montgomery the first time in the sixties.Rosa Passos might remind a bit of Astrud Gilberto but has more "soul" in her voice even though her voice is quite "small" compared to other female jazz singers....but she sure has that jazzfeel that also Jobim had.
To me this Cd is so appealing since it is more or less completely accoustic..2 guitars. Rosa herself+ the wonderful guitarplayer Lula Galvao that is one of the best guitarplayers I ever heard. very subtle with a touch of flamenco .on bass it is maestro himself Ron carter..his playing is so obviuos and without any flashy pyrrotechnics..but just beautiful.
It is difficult to pick highlights,,,,but first song "Bahia Com H" immediately catches my ear..and also "Sorru Para Mim with it's airy feel and wonderful bossagroove..where Rosa lays slightly behind the beat and creates a very swinging mood..just great..and "Feitio de Oracao" which has an atmosphere of "Tristeza" and Hope in it at the same time spiced up with a wonderfully melody line.
Since I bought this one I have bought another 6 CD s with Rosa and I will continue until I have them all...you can not simply get enough of Rosa Passos music...To hear Rosa Passos sing is the closest you can come to heaven on this earth

Rosa Has A Voice Like No Other!!!.......2004-12-23

This is one of the best bossa nova cd's around with 2 major artists collaborating. I have never heard such a plain, yet sublime voice like that of rosa passos. Just listen to Feito de Oração and Primera Vez. No actually just listen to the whole cd and you will begin to understand. When I first heard this cd I was living in P.R. at the time and I mistook the music for spanish jazz. The lyrics are definitely not spanish, instead portuguese and the style of music is all its own, known as bossa nova. Because I listen to a lot of jazz it took me a while to get into it because of the language. However now that I am more knowledgeable about bossa nova, I will say that this cd is already a classic. I wish more of rosa passos music was avalilable in the United states.

Rosa Baiana.......2004-04-30

Rosa is the best! I've never heard a more sensual voice. Her Insensatez is marvellous, I am surprised at how she LIVES every line and every word of it. For me it's the best rendition of my best-loved Jobim song. The first time I heard Insensatez sung by Italian singer Mina, she was also stunning, she made it cold like ice, like wind in the mountains, like the moment when there are no more tears to cry... but Rosa's Insensatez is full of love and even of secret hope. Bahia com H is breezy and swinging, the other highlights are the last three songs, especially Vinicius de Moraes' famous sonnet Eu Sei que Vou te Amar. Before I heard Rosa I never could have imagined that such effortless vocals could reach a degree of dramatism close to Maria Bethania's. Bethania breaks your heart with her force, and Rosa does it with her whisper. To do justice to Ron Carter and other musicians, their arrangement is the best frame for the diamond that is Rosa's voice. Especially I loved the saxophone solo in Desafinado.

One of Santana's best after 69-71 period........2006-03-23

No album from Santana could top or even match the musical perfection of their 1969-1971 period, but Amigos comes close. David Brown returns to play rock solid bass, and add the "Afro" back into Afro-cuban. Ndugu Chancler does a terrific job of playing drums and timbales at the same time. He's not as good as Michael Shrieve, but he did good nonetheless.
The album is really good, and it gets even better after each listen. Dance Sister Dance and Europa are the highlights of the album. Look Up (To See What's Coming Down) is a great song that resembles almost perfectly to the old Santana. Let Me is one of three "funk" flavored songs. This is actually not that bad of a song. It's actually pretty good if you listen to it a few times. Only one song in the whole album is bad, "Tell Me Are you Tired." This album could definetly do without it.
Overall, this album is the damn near closest you can get to the original Santana sound, only Abraxas Pool gets to the same level to the originals. Nevertheless, buy this album. You will not be dissappointed.

One Of Santana's Best? No, But It's OK.......2005-12-19

Santana has always had the amazing ability to change musical direction. Amigos is a musical experience that's radically different from the brilliant Welcome album and the very good comeback Supernatural.

Like other Santana albums in the 70s, Amigos combines a variety of musical styles--Latin, jazz fusion, disco, and funk. Unfortunately, the variety of musical styles makes the album challenging to listen to if heard in full. The songs do not mesh well together. While I appreciate the combination of various musical styles in one song, going from Latin-flavored "Gitano" to the funky "Tell Me Are You Tired" makes the album disjointed. In comparison, Welcome's tracks blend well together.

In my opinion, only one track truly stands out--"Dance Sister Dance", a classic eight minute epic that builds and builds in tempo and energy. The song is one of my favorites of Santana and thankfully is on some of the group's greatest hits albums.

A good second song of the album is "Take Me With You", whose first few seconds sound like background music to an episode of Arrested Development but like Dance Sister Dance is able to transition from Latin rock to a slow samba-like rhythm. Regrettably, most of the other songs on the album are less memorable and certainly not classics. The funky/choral "Let It Shine" and the discoish "Let Me" are repetitive and boring tracks, especially when compared to the brillance of Dance Sister Dance.

Overall, the album lacks the genius of Welcome, but is a OK pick for the true Santana fan.

Bought this album for Let it shine, which is always overlooked on compilations. This is a great disco track that sounds more like Isaac Hayes and Stevie Wonder than Santana. Europa and Dance sister dance are also great.

SABROSO!!.......2004-08-03

Santana's multi-cultural genius is captured on this cd. This 1976 release is one of my favorites of all-time. "Dance Sister Dance" is the lead-off song; and what and lively song to start with. This album got a lot of airplay on R & B radio stations in Philly back in '76. Santana's guitar work is superior as usual. "Take Me With You" really smokes and "Gitano" makes you want to dance on the rooftop on a hot steamy summer night!!!

Three Amigos soundtrack!.......2006-10-14

If you are fan of the movie then listening to this helps you relive the experience. The soundtrack includes singing from Chevy Chase, Steve Martin, and Martin Short which is actually really good. A couple songs were written by Randy Newman. Then there is the wonderful classic western
score by Elmer Bernstein. After reading the liner notes I found out he scored classic westerns like the Magnificant Seven and John Wayne movies as well. My only complaint is some of the scores are too short, like under 3 minutes. I wish they let them go a bit longer because they flow so well. My 2 favorites on this are the "My little Buttercup" and "Blue Shadows" both well made and funny.

"The Gozadera, more than a musical style, is a concept allowing us to use whatever music we enjoy and mix it up," says guitarist Jose Luis Pardo. "Like boogaloo, salsa, bossa nova, funk, disco, house, techno, jungle, merengue, New Wave, cha-cha-cha, mambo, and of course Acid Jazz." And who better to pull this off than producer Andres Levin (Aterciopelados, Chaka Khan, La Portuaria, La Secta, El Gran Silencio, David Byrne, Arto Lindsay, and many more) along with engineer Fernando Aponte (Masters at Work, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Deee-Lite, Towa Tei)?

This, their second album, finds the young Venezuelans stepping out from under the shadow of the Rock en Español moniker and giving it a much needed face-lift. "We are a rock band that does not just play just rock music," says singer Jose Briceño. The 19 tracks on the album combine keyboard driven dance-rock with elements of Latin music worked in. Whether it's the funked out bliss of "Sexy," the mambo lounge of "Mango Cool," or the trip-hop ecstasy of "Otra Vez" (on which Arto Lindsay contributes a bit of distorted 12-string electric guitar), Los Amigos Invisibles have created the perfect party album. Their lyrics tell stories inspired by real-life experiences of love (sex), relationships (sex), and more often then not, the taboos that accompany each (sleazy sex).

Formed in 1991 as part of Caracas' mobile party scene, the six members of Los Amigos Invisibles quickly developed their unique sound by blending all styles of Latin music with modern beats. Their influences are vast, incorporating the space-age sounds of Esquivel, the whacked-out funk of Parliament, and the beat-friendly Brand New Heavies and Jamiroquai. "We began making music influenced by the development of the acid-jazz scene and the dance music coming out of London," says Jose Luis, "but when it came down to playing it, we realized that our culture and environment kept creeping into our music. The tunes that are played over the radio at the corner shop or that we whistle along with from the bodega are songs that interest us... that music is part of our people and that makes it part of us. All we want to do is have fun and make fun of it all at the same time." Their first album, A Typical & Autoctonal Venezuelan Dance Band, was released in 1996 and received Best Band, Record of the Year and Best Guitarist awards in the Venezuelan Rock Awards.

Los Amigos Invicibles - best kept secret.......2006-02-08

They are by far my favorite Latin band. This band overflows in energy and talent. Their live shows are unsurpassed, and this album is the closest you can get to having that experience.

The entire album is permeated by experimental, funky beats, but has definite foundations in the classic, traditional latin drums and horns. The entire album is in Spanish and although I'm not even close to being a Spanish speaker, this is in my top 5 albums list.

You have to at least listen to this album, and if it grabs you, I hope you have the opportunity to see them live at least once in your lifetime.

Fun fun fun funky fun!.......2004-01-20

Los Amigos Invisibles put the fun in funky in this album. It is so damn good. You can hear their unbridled enthusiasm in every note, and it is infectious. This is a great CD- and was my favorite of 2002 (yeah, it was released earlier, but it didn't come my way until 2002) There are tons of great dance tunes on it, and some goofy one offs, but it is all good.

Although four years passed since their previous album, these Latin playboys are always up for a party, and The Venezuelan Zinga Son Vol. 1 is no different. Produced by New York house music producers Masters At Work, the band's third domestic album is filled with upbeat salsa ("Esto Es Lo Que Hay" is a riot), soft Brazilian grooves, spacey funk, disco, rock and lounge. They roll it all together into street party of good vibes, sexy beats and lecherous thoughts (see track 14), but what keeps the Brooklyn-based sextet out of gutter is that it's hard to find fault when the insidious jams cause you to stop thinking and start dancing. Interestingly, the album seems to ride the arc or raging party: it starts on a promising but mellow tip, then loosens up in the middle part, then rides it out until there's nothing left to give. Combining influences of Fania-based Salsa, bossa nova (Jobim) and deep house, and singing several songs in English (not surprising considering how much time they spend in NYC), with "The Venezuelan Zinga Son, Vol. 1" the Amigos presented their fourth work in a moment that Venezuela -their homeland- and the world at large very much need their excellent groove and good musical humor.

Still, four years after its original release, the album retains all its flavor and fun, much like all their other works, kicking aside language barriers. With Los Amigos Invisibles, you CAN'T go wrong: from their first work, A Typical Autoctonal Venezuelan Dance Band to their 2006 release, Superpop Venezuela, they've managed to combine music and fun in a way few other bands anywhere else can.

In this new work, Los amigos Invisibles, not only show his particular sound of Acid Latin Jazz, but they expose his maturity and versatility in each of the songs. This venezuelan group is raised as the only flag of his country in foreign territory, for the only one does not say. His topics reflects the good sound of the Funk, Acid Jazz and the soft notes of the Bossa in the topic "Playa Azul ". Indisputably, a great work.

Best Latin band today.......2005-11-04

Los Amigos are, simply put, the hottest -- and best -- Latin act in music today. Their incorporation of traditional latin rhythms with jazz, funk and rock meld into a sound uniquely their own. Venezuelan Zingason continues the tradition of The New Sound of the Venezuelan Gozadera, Arepa 3000 and their limited release self-titled LP (which can be obtained via the LAI website). "Ease Your Mind" (in English, weirdly enough) may be the best track here, followed by its Spanish phonetic equivalent "Isyormain." And, of course, throughout the disc LAI never lose their humor or clever deviousness.

Also, if you EVER get a chance to catch Los Amigos live in concert, I guarantee you one of the BEST times of your life! They are simply SPECTACULAR!

I saw these guys live in NYC during the Latin Alternative Music Conference. They rocked my world! Live show was split up into smooth first half and funky second half. I was so impressed I had to go and buy a CD. This album stays true to the live performance, containing smooth and suave songs as well as funky latin grooves. It's been in my car stereo for 3 weeks!

Venezuela's resident musical maniacs and former Latin Grammy nominees are back with covers of seventeen tunes they knew and loved during their teen years, a few of which, such as "Miss Venezuela," complete with samples of a simpering beauty queen, actually sound strangely familiar. Their rampant satirical stance and penchant for studio wizardry still firmly in place, they wallow in neo-nostalgia, running amok in Caracas Oldieville, abetted by producer DJ Dimitri of Paris and their own polymorphous tendencies. Nods to Isaac Hayes, Nigerian superstar Fela Kuti, sixties bossa nova as sanitized via the American west coast, P-Funk, Santana, and even The Fifth Dimension do a crazed buck-and-wing around hip-hop, lounge and latter-day dance club machinations. Superb cover tune offering.......2007-03-06

Like a fine wine or cognac, Los Amigos Invisibles only get better with age. With "Super Pop Venezuela," the sextet take a break from their own musical acumen to produce a disc that covers a gamut of Venezuelan melodies. Of course, though, LAI give the assembled harmonies their own unique magnetism. Thanks largely to the euphonious [writing] talents of guitarist José Luís Pardo (aka "Cheo"), "Super Pop"'s offerings are likely to satisfy anyone who enjoys the genre in which LAI subsists. And that's because, even though these songs are not LAI's own, they *make* them their own by injecting into them their own extraordinary character.

My personal favorites are "No Es Fácil Amar a Una Mujer," "Yo No Sé," "Curda y Pan" and most especially "Yo Soy Así." Keep in mind, too, that as with past LAI discs, not all the tunes have vocals -- which, in LAI's case, really makes not a difference as their musical proficiency is off the scale!

Even a casual fan of Los Amigos *has* to see them live at least once in his/her life. It is a truly remarkable event.

The Very Best of LAI........2007-01-13

I was living in Venezuela in the 80's, when these songs were first time published, and I can't stop remembering how many woderful things happened to me when I was listening to this music. These is so far, the very best CD released by the LAI, and among other latin bands, LAI is simply the very best of all them. I'd give more stars for this Cd, if they were available. By the way, listen to them alive is another glorious experience. I strongly recommend these guys.

Finally something different and good........2006-12-06

I LOVE this album! It is so much fun! It's got a killer mix of styles that showcase what Los Amigos Invisibles do best. They create a great dance party with some Disco, Salsa, Funk, House and other styles too. Dmitiri from Paris gave it a really nice vibe as the producer. There are songs to chill out to, songs to laugh to and most of all songs to dance to. This album will definitely put a smile on your face. I have a two hour drive to work and can honestly say that I can listen to this album from beginning to end and not get bored. Definately worth every penny and have bought some copies for friends and family as stocking stuffers this x-mas. Enjoy.

Let's be candid, this album is not as well-produced or infectious as the prior 3 Los Amigos Invisibles albums. I love these guys to death, I'm not trying to be negative. But I find myself having no urge to re-listen to "Superpop Venezuela", whereas I always loved to revisit the Luaka Bop releases. Los Amigos Invisibles are an incredible live act, so perhaps this new material is better in concert.

If you're looking for a new act that has some of the same inspiration and creativity as prior Los Amigos Invisibles releases, you could do well by picking up The Pinker Tones debut "The Million Colour Revolution." They are from Barcelona and have a lot of the same good vibes LAI once had.

"We're a dance band," says Jose Luis Pardo, the guitarist for Los Amigos Invisibles. Tuned into groove culture from Detroit to London to Tokyo -- thanks to the Internet and a busy tour schedule -- the Amigos began work on their new album AREPA 3000: A VENEZUELAN JOURNEY INTO SPACE with a disco sensibility. Admiring French DJ/producers the band sought a heavier house sound in contrast to the retro and lounge elements of THE NEW SOUND OF THE VENEZUELAN GOZADERA. "The lounge thing sounds more Japanese," says Jose Luis. "The house sound is fresher, the disco songs we do sound more like that. The album is more electronic in certain ways."

Since their ground-breaking US debut the Amigos have lived a double life. In their hometown of Caracas, Venezuela, they've hosted underground club nights for years (the most recent called 'Super Sancocho Variety'). Then, insouciant single-entendre songs like "Sexy" and the doggy-style anthem "Ponerte En Cuatro" landed them on MTV and radio, and before long, the six young men found themselves pop idols. It wasn't hard, but their hearts remain on the dance floor and in the clubs.

Arepa is the name of a food that serves as a substitute of bread in Venezuela. Arepa 3000 is the third release of the Venezuelan super-band Los Amigos Invisibles.

Los Amigos, which had already scored big time with their previous two albums (the second of which was already recorded under Luaka Bop, David Byrne's label), did it again, but spicing up their "musica sabrosa" with a great sense of humor. Although it will be even funnier to people originally from Venezuela, you'll love the sections of people (famous comedians, horse race narrators and radio talk show hosts) speaking between songs. Specially contagious are the very tropical "Mami Te Extrano" (Honey, I miss you) and "Llegaste Tarde" (You arrived late).

Still, seven years after its original release, the album retains all its flavor and fun, much like all their other works, kicking aside language barriers. With Los Amigos Invisibles, you CAN'T go wrong: from their first work, A Typical Autoctonal Venezuelan Dance Band to their 2006 release, Superpop Venezuela, they've managed to combine music and fun in a way few other bands anywhere else can. Vimos esta banda en viva en la Cuidad de Guatemala en el mayo. Cuando regresamos a los EEUU, comprábalo aqui. Me gusta mucho esta banda y mis amigos y yo consideramos Los Amigos Invisibles lo mejor del bossa nova, jazz latina, jazz de brasilia, etc.

Not What I Expected.......2006-08-10

I expected the CD to be better than it actually was. I first heard cuchi-cuchi and i loved the song, so i thought the other songs on the CD would be energetic like that one. It wasn't a bad CD though. I'd say 40% of the songs were worth listening to.
