Wikipedia claims John Bonham of Led Zeppelin plays on Lulu's "Everybody's Got To Clap". Anyone have any verification?

5 out of 5 stars Multi -Label Lulu CD Best Of IS The Best!.......2007-06-30

There is not a CD of Lulu's that is more career encompassing than this CD. It features ALL of her biggest & best hits in the US, including many only found on this CD. I love it for the songs that she did for ATCO, which include the phenomenal OH ME OH MY [ I'M A FOOL FOR YOU BABY ] - blue eyed soul at it's best. AFTER THE FEELING IS GONE is another great song too! Of course, it has every US hit from all the labels she recorded for on this from SHOUT through TO SIR WITH LOVE to I COULD NEVER MISS YOU [ MORE THAN I DO ].

Next, we need the original ATCO albums released on CD - NEW ROUTES and MELODY FAIR. It is inexplicable how these classic albums from 1969 & 1970 are not on CD yet anywhere in the world! Lulu continues recording and touring , and is certainly visible & viable in the world today. Look at her appearance on AMERICAN IDOL. Let's hope some label issues her ATCO recordings in full soon. Long overdue Lulu.

This CD is a must!

5 out of 5 stars Terrific sound quality!.......2006-06-20

"To Sir With Love" is so clean, it's sounds as if you're in the studio. Comes as no surprise to this reviewer, always having good luck with Rhino releases. Collectors will also like the fact this CD includes Lulu's last hit from the early 80's: "I Could Never Miss You", a hard to find single until Rhino included it in the compliation.

5 out of 5 stars To Lulu with Love.......2003-12-21

In the camp between the hipsters and squares, Lulu, the daughter of a Glaswegian butcher, was in the latter category along with Nancy Sinatra, Dusty Springfield, and Petula Clark, who did harmless inoffensive pop. She could do a nice lilting strings ballad like "To Sir With Love" or could let loose with her Petula Clark/Ronnie Spector-ish vocals on the soulful "Oh Me Oh My (I'm A Fool For You, Baby)." Chartwise, she didn't score too many Top 40 hits, but since when is that THE measure for how respected an artist is?

Her time with the Luvvers is represented by her cover of the Isley Bros.' classic "Shout," which although it didn't do well on the charts, became the song she became most associated with in the UK. Her voice is really scratchy and shrill in this song, but it doesn't detract from the song. Here are the highlights.

"Leave A Little Love", her first solo single, hit #8 in the UK and demonstrated her ability to sing nice pop ballads backed with vocalists and piano.

Her biggest and only #1 US hit, the ballad "To Sir With Love" from the movie she also co-starred in, is a tribute to a teacher who teaches Judy Geeson's character to grow up "from crayons to perfume". Originally the B-side to her cover of Neil Diamond's "The Boat That I Row" the US DJ's played it and made into a hit. The soaring vocals, strings, and guitar embodies the epitomy of 60's pop, coming as it did in 1967. She does a competent version of the Diamond song, featuring the organs made popular in that decade, and it made to #15 on the US charts.

The engaging "Me The Peaceful Heart" a #9 UK single, bombed at #53 in the US, shows her wondering why bad things happen to her, but she takes it all in style. Songs like the rocking "Boy" and "Sad Memories", with a folky twinge, "Morning Dew", with horns and orchestra a la Nancy Sinatra's middle period, and Harry Nilsson's "Without Him" were all done in 1968, showing her versatility in doing varied styles.

Two songs with the Dixie Flyers, "Hum A Song (From Your Heart)" and the ballad "After The Feeling Is Gone" are included, and shows her leaving the 60's pop scene, embracing more string arrangements and a Southern soul sound. Such is also the case with the harmonious and clapping "Everybody's Got To Clap", written by her husband, Maurice Gibb of the Bee Gees.

In the 70's, she covered a few Bowie songs of which "The Man Who Sold The World" and "Watch That Man" are included, featuring backing vocals from Bowie, himself a fan of Lulu, and produced by Bowie and Mick Ronson. The musicians were the Spiders, BTW. And she joins the hallowed few who does a James Bond song, the brassy "The Man With The Golden Gun."

However, her ballad single from Elton John's Rocket label, "Don't Take Love For Granted" and her single from Alfa Records, the #18 "I Could Never Miss You (More Than I Do)" shows her vocals matured and at their best, with the strings backing making these the best songs on this collection, rivalling "To Sir With Love."

And this is a Rhino compilation, so the Billboard chart position for each song is listed. However, why exclude her highest charting UK hit, the #2 "Boom Bang-A-Bang"? After all, she is an islander. Lulu may not have had the legendary reputation and smooth vocals of Dusty Springfield, but she held her own in the 1960's and 1970's.

Oh, and trivia: Lulu got her name who her manager said of her, "she's a lulu."

5 out of 5 stars That's MS. Lulu To You!.......2003-11-12

Remember that perky little blonde/redhead from the sixties that sang, "To Sir With Love"? Oh yeah. Well, she never disappeared - only in the old USA. That girl born Marie McDonald McLaughlin Lawrie in 1948 had her first big hit, "Shout" (Isley Brothers) in 1967 at the age of fourteen. That song alone regularly sold enough copies to be in Britain's TOP 200 for the following 20 years!

She's recorded hit songs (on this set) written by Neil Diamond, Don Black, Mark London, Harry Nilsson, the Bee Gees, David Bowie and John Barry. The latter writer gave her, "The Man With The Golden Gun", a Bond film classic theme song. Oddly enough, Bowie was a big Lulu fan and helped her release, "Watch That Man" and "The Man Who Sold The World". Her song choices range from ballads to rock and roll standards. In the sixties she was virtually protected by the likes of the Rolling Stones and the Beatles who she had toured with. She was a legend as a teenager.

This collection of twenty songs is great, even if it only goes as far as 1979. However, Lulu continued past that to this very day. If you can find her UK LP recording of "Independence", it is well worth the cost. Lulu proves that as a little Scottish lass, she is still at top form in her fifties. She has that kind of voice.

Germany's Tom Tykwer is among the rare directors who score their own movies (Charlie Chaplin, Clint Eastwood, and John Carpenter also belong to that small circle). Here, he and his regular collaborators, Johnny Klimer and Reinhold Heil (both boasting experience with... Nina Hagen!) have come up with a symphonic score performed by none other than Sir Simon Rattle and the Berliner Philharmoniker, with Absolute Ensemble founder Kristian Järvi conducting the State Choir Latvia. Alas, even Rattle and Järvi cannot make the score more than mildly pleasant--and ultimately unmemorable. Overall the vocal cues fare best: Soprano Chen Reiss shines on "Meeting Laura," for instance, a track that displays vague Philip Glass-esque echoes. Another highlight is the contribution of eerie-sounding boy soprano Victor de Maizière on "Laura's Murder." Elsewhere, the composing trio mercifully doesn't overdo the middle-oriental exoticism on "Moorish Scents," though the track does feature a glockenspiel--now officially the most overused instrument on contemporary soundtracks. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Album Description

PERFUME tells the story of a man who is obsessed by the idea of creating the perfect perfume. The novel, by Patrick Süskind, was written in 1985 and has been translated into 45 languages, so far selling more than 15 million copies worldwide, making it the most successful novel of post-war German literature. The film boasts a top-class cast of international actors such as Ben Whishaw, Dustin Hoffman and Alan Rickman and up-and-coming talent Rachel Hurd-Wood, and an original soundtrack from the film's director Tom Tykwer, recorded by Sir Simon Rattle and the Berliner Philharmoniker and released exclusively on EMI Classics - the first soundtrack from this internationally acclaimed award-winning partnership.

The soundtrack, with its symphonic appeal reaching from airy and light sounds to majestically heavy motifs, manages with stylistic verve to make the world of odours downright tangible. The orchestra closely and cautiously follows in the steps of the plot, taking up the historical atmosphere of the 18th century and yet remaining entangled in the universe of olfactory attractions. The choir pieces, recorded in Riga by the National Choir of Latvia, lend a sacral and spherical aspect to many passages whilst the body of sound from the Berliner Philharmoniker produces soundscapes to indulge the senses. If the soul of a human is his odour, as Grenouille states in the film, then music is the heartbeat of the film.

When I saw the movie, I take a note about music....but honestly Is not the same perception whe you listen the CD.
I mean , is a good CD but you can't have the same feeling as a movie. They need to be togheter...movie and music

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Music for a Great Film.......2007-05-18

Tom Tykwer, Sir Simon Rattle and the Berliner Philharmoniker did a brilliant job in navigating us emotionally through the film and showing us the depth of Grenouille's tormented soul. If you like Classical Music as well as Soundtracks in general, you'll be very, very pleased with this piece. It's beautiful. It's even breathtaking at some points! Buy it!

5 out of 5 stars Takes my breathe away.......2007-02-23

I have been listening to this soundtrack all over the internet. It makes the pit of my stomach flutter with emotion and my nerves twitch in a strange satisfaction.

So truly brilliant this soundtrack is.

So very perfect.

5 out of 5 stars I really like this one.......2007-02-11

I'm totally puzzled by the negative tone of the "official" Amazon reviewer. This is really a very fine score, rather hard to categorize but certainly effective -- even when played out of the context of the movie -- with a certain darkwave or noir atmosphere that I find very appealing.

It's also rather amazing when you consider this is the same team that created the frenetically energized Eurobeat score for "Run Lola Run."

5 out of 5 stars Perfume to my ears.......2007-01-30

As soon as I saw the film, I fell in love with its beautiful, romantic, atmospheric music and ordered the soundtrack right away. It is as moody and exotic as the film as it follows the story of one of the most unusual and original characters ever created by fiction, focusing on his very well developed sense of smell, something almost in the super-hero genre, if it wasn't for the character's macabre obsession. The music to this thus, had to be a perfect translation in notes and chords, which is a tremendous task more than brilliantly achieved. Track after track of intoxicating beauty, as the most exquisite perfume. I'm surprised this hasn't attracted more attention than it deserves. For me, it's right up there with Herrmann's "Vertigo".

5 out of 5 stars Muy buena "Desculpe o aue".......2005-08-21

No conozco mucho de esta cantante pero escuché ahí por principios de los 90 la canción "Desculpe o aue" y me gustó muchísimo, y ahora sé quién la canta.

5 out of 5 stars The best of Mutantes' ex lead singer.......2003-07-24

This is the collection of the top 10 singles (in the Brazilian chart) of Mutantes' lead singer Rita Lee. Mutantes was one of South America's most created and revered psychedelic rock bands from the late 60's and early 70's. In the 80's, Rita abandoned the experimentation and psychedelism that characterized the Mutantes sound and tried some lighter stuff with influences of bossa nova (check Doce Vampiro, Ovelha Negra, Desculpe O Auê). This CD is the best that the 80's pop rock could offer. There are some pure rock tracks that are awsome too (Agora Só Falta Você, Jardins da Babilônia). The first one was dedicated to her Mutantes partner and ex-boyfriend Arnaldo Baptista and talks about leaving the past behind. Overall, this is a must have for Rita's fans and a very pleasant surprise for a casual listener.

5 out of 5 stars Rita and Roberto Rule!.......2003-06-08

It was on an Internet Radio service to which I (a lover of Brazilian samba/bossa nova) subscribe that I first heard Rita singing "Nem Luxo, Nem Lixo." Though utterly clueless as to the work of this artist, I recall from almost the first note being literally elevated by what I was hearing. It took me back to the R&B harmonies that I so vividly recall from my 1950's youth. On the strength of that hearing, I bought this CD, thinking it would be worth it just for that single cut. With apologies to the late Fred Rogers, "can you spell underestimation?" With her husband and musical partner Roberto de Carvalho, Rita is the consummate pop song writer. Together, they toss off melodic and lyrical (and I don't even understand Portuguese!) hooks that strike me as placing them at least in the neighborhood of a team they obviously and genuinely admire, Lennon & McCartney. In this collection that influence (especially, I think, John Lennon's) is most evident in the first six tracks; but beginning with "Doce Vampiro," every cut is (inho) that of an individual voice, making the sort of music that penetrates the consciousness and simply fills one with the sheer joy of being alive. And in the end, what more is there to any creative art form than that? It's pop music at its absolute most sophisticated, and what amazes me is that it's creators are not more widely known here in the U.S. So, with the proviso that my reaction may well be an individual one, I commend the disc to anyone reading this. If you enjoy it as unabashedly as I have, I will have done my modest bit to make the world (by how many ever inhabitants find it persuasive) a happier place. And isn't that what this living busniess is all about?

5 out of 5 stars RITA IS A FANTASTIC BRAZILIAN SINGER !!!!!.......2001-11-02

The first time I heard anything from Rita Lee was in a party in Mexico City in the early 80's and the song of the year was Lanca Perfume, and it doesn't matter how many times I listen to it, it still sounds as perfect as that first time. I'm so glad to see that this album includes it and honestly, the whole album is great, I love every cut that made her famous as a soloist. If you are into Brazilian Music, do yourself a favor and buy this album, you will love it as well, and if you are not into Brazilian Music, but you like and enjoy good 70's and early 80's Pop/Rock, it'll become a great addition to your collection.

Not quite as technical as newer stuff, but I love her voice and like the arrangements.

5 out of 5 stars A Phenomenal Journey from Rio Bravo to Rio de la Plata.......2004-01-31

Yolanda and Enrique offer us this true Latin American musical embrace. Although I knew of Enrique Coria's masterful guitar style, this lyrical duo with Yolanda Aranda really exceeded everything I expected. The trained voice of Yolanda takes us through zambas and huapangos with passion and subtleties. My favorite tunes are La Malagüeña (where Yolanda shows the real pitch of her voice) and La Canción Mixteca. Chava Flores' Mi México de Ayer is also really moving. In La Pucha con el Hombre (a great escondido in the tradition of Los Carabajal), Yolanda may not compete with my paisana Mercedes Sosa, yet her voice really shines. In summary, this is one of the best Latin American musical partnerships I heard in the last years: an homage to the everlasting Latin American musical tradition.

While Perfume Tree's Jane Tilley's ghostly vocal excursions meld effortlessly with the electronic milieu provided by Bruce Turpin and Pete Lutwyche, there is a slight element of sonic overkill in their patented, blissed-out sound. Actually, the trio's divine instrumental passages hold up quite well and draw the listener into an inverted omniverse of subliminal sound. With drum & bass interludes stacked on top of atmospheric drones and Tilley's vaporous musings, the whole experience can become a bit ponderous. While the stylized soundscapes evoke a profound, otherworldly perspective and their lush, synthetic environments are tailored to absolute perfection, Perfume Tree are often missing one essential quality: soul. Feeler is a mixed bag of sequencers, programming, guitars, and samplers. Decent ambient-funk-dub fusion with vocals, but not great. --Mitch Myers

5 out of 5 stars Sonic Calgon..........2006-12-25

Take me away. This is quite a relaxing and breathtaking
wash of sound. Lay back and say ahhhhhhh.......
These are not your standard Verse - Chorus - Verse structure.
They are long, blissful, but not ambient.

Think Kirsty Hawkshaw meets a surrealistic Portishead with
a bit of Massive Attack poured in for good measure. No,
these guys are not at all like Delerium to me, although I love
the rotating canvas of artists that make up Delerium.

The TB303 is put to unique usage on "Both Oceans"... yeah, possibly
a sample, but it doesn't matter the way it is used. Rather than
the tweaked out squeals in the club, it's used as an ambient,
hypnotic drone for a mellow journey. Other favorites of mine are
"Flooded" with it's atmospheric textures and drum n bass filtering
in and out, and "Warm Sun Fingers" weaves it's delayed drums echoing
out a dreamlike tapestry with Jane's vocals.

1 out of 5 stars for the tone deaf.......2001-07-24

Bla, Bla Bla. Why in gods name was this junk rated heigher than delerium. My freaken ears are bleeding after just the scratchy, un-understandable jibberish SAMPLES. You are obviously tone deaf. Delerium fans>> Please feel free to E-mail me if you have heard of any stuff worth hearing, besides delerium. i know its a one-of-a-kind type of music, so could the real music listening people please sit down and comment against all who put delerium down.

Nice rythms. Kick back and enjoy the groove.

4 out of 5 stars Nice soothing, etherial electronica!.......2000-02-16

I bought this album almost a year after buying their first release "A lifetime away". I must say that this one is certainly better. Perfume Tree bears alot of resemblences in atmosphere to the other Canadian act Delerium, except while Delerium borrows samples from everywhere else and is anything but original, Perfume Tree has a much more "authentic" sound (for lack of a better term). While Jane's voice isn't exactly emotional it is in fact soothing, and the album conveys images of being in a fogged forest with fairies dancing around me whenever I listen to it. Highley reccommended!

5 out of 5 stars 100% brilliant.......1999-12-24

74 minutes of pure bliss: Feeler is excellent. Perfume Tree have made me re-evaluate the music I listen to. Feeler is easily one of the best albums of 1998, and I can't wait for more from Perfume Tree.

4 out of 5 stars Spooky.......2007-01-11

The whole album has a sound that makes an atmosphere of spooky and sad. Listen to the lyrics and they dont make much sense together, but then when you dont pay attention, the lyrics creates imagery that complements the mood. In terms of sound, male vocalist with a heavy sound and slow tempo.

5 out of 5 stars Wolfsheim + Halloween.......2006-06-23

A reviewer below wrote: "If Wolfsheim is daytime, Diary of Dreams is nightime." Those are the exact words I used when I first heard Diary of Dreams (Nigredo).

5 out of 5 stars Eine neue Phantasie.......2005-12-11

This was the first Diary of Dreams CD I bought, and it is still my favorite. The music is orchestral and expansive; Adrian's voice is like dark silk drawn across your skin. "Freak Perfume" is a masterpiece, I cannot recommend it highly enough.

5 out of 5 stars Great Darkwave.......2003-07-12

Very intense feelings, lyrics and vocals. It's the space I enjoy being in. If Wolfsheim is daytime, Diary of Dreams is nightime.

It's strange but when I first got Freak Perfume, I gave it a cursory listen and thought I didn't like them and almost sold my CD. But something made me take it out of the "to sell" pile...and now I love them!(I was surprized to hear that Adrian Hates worked on a Clan of Xymox album. I also love them)

Adrian has a very deep rich voice that soothes no matter what he is saying.

3 out of 5 stars Songs, Adrian, Songs!!.......2003-02-18

Finally, at long last, Diary of Dreams have discovered the SONG. After many albums of perfecting their drama, production and image, they've finally written a few songs--not an albums worth mind you(some of these still plod along like their older stuff)--but some damned fine electro goth on Freak Perfume Ltd. And there's something to be said for that alone. Few bands today(or ever) are very adept at creating a listenable kind of pure electronic gothic music. O Brother Sleep and She are likely some of the best tracks of their kind I have ever heard. The lyrics thankfully steer clear of occult/horror movie imagery, although they are still delivered at times by somebody with very little concept of restraint or subtlety. Adrian Hates has been paving the way for darkwave music in Germany and abroad(with a name like that, he was destined to be goth!)and his engineering on Clan of Xymox's Creatures was definitive of the new sound of gothic/darkwave music. It's crisp, distant and huge sounding all at once. This is a good record. Hopefully, they will continue their upward trajectory. With all of the great synthpop bands in Germany right now, maybe the melodies will rub off on to Diary's dark, dark selves and sink into their music.

Originally released as a series of 78 rpm recordings for Capitol in the late 1940s, this set collects the work of Dr. Samuel J. Hoffman, the leading theremin virtuoso of his age. After adding theremin to a number of successful films (most notably, Spellbound, The Lost Weekend, and The Day the Earth Stood Still), Hoffman (a podiatrist by profession) teamed with British composer Harry Revel. The result: three albums that introduced this oddly provocative instrument to the world. On Music Out of the Moon, the tone is optimistic futurism with Hoffman guiding his instrument through dramatic swoops across the universe while an enthusiastic chorus oohs and ahhs at the wonder of it all. With tracks like "Lunar Rhapsody", "Mist O' the Moon," and "Radar Blues", Moon may be the most unintentionally hilarious disc in the set. The second disc, Perfume Set to Music was, according to the liner notes, inspired by "world famous perfumes." The music, of course, is as ridiculous as the concept. The chorus remains on Perfume, but the mood is a bit more sedate, stepping away from futuristic jazz and utilizing more string arrangements. On Music for Peace of Mind, listeners are instructed that "This music has a message, if you will open your mind and heart to receive it. Turn down the lights, relax in an easy chair, and listen. Then, for a few stolen hours, perhaps you will warm to happy memories and blissful hopes." Oh, you will, all right, you will. --S. Duda

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Les Baxter, too!.......2007-04-25

This is a package of 3 discs, each with its own sleeve, which replicate the very brief original 1947-50 albums.

Much of the music here is fairly tame cocktail stuff - all of it composed by Harry Revel and nothing at all like the film work Dr. Hoffman had done in Hitchcock (and Dali)'s SPELLBOUND or would be called upon to do in the 1950s. The collection was a disappointment to me in that regard, but as I'm a Baxter fan and 2 of the 3 original albums were Baxter/Hoffman projects, I enjoy the opportunity to hear some of Baxter's pre-Nat Cole work.

The first album, MUSIC OUT OF THE MOON, is mostly doo-wah pop vocals. The theremin might double the vocal line or take an occasional solo. This album reminds me a bit too much of the "Wake the Town and Tell the People" type of Baxter.

The second album, PERFUME SET TO MUSIC, is unquestionably exotica in spirit. There's far more variety of sound and mood and Dr. Hoffman's theremin is put to better use. His solos are more free - anticipatory of the vocalise for which Baxter would become renowned in the 1950s with Yma Sumac! Nice! I know that at least one of these tunes, "Jet", was released on 45 at the time of this recording (on RCA Victor), billed as "Orchestra and Chorus under the direction of Leslie Baxter / Samuel Hoffman - theremin" since I myself have it. Its B-side was another Revel ditty entitled "Struttin' with Clayton" which is not included here - no great loss actually, but cause to wonder whether more might be out there somewhere.

The Billy May album MUSIC FOR PEACE OF MIND may be my favorite of the three. The theremin is front and center from the outset. The ensemble playing is better. It's a good big band rather than the cocktail orchestra of the Baxter recordings. The piano work is stronger. Also, the sound is opened up - not so squelched as in the older Baxter projects. The whole thing is vigorous, if not quite as enchanting as the Baxter PERFUME recording.

This is a nice collection. For those out there who might not necessarily care about having the mini versions of the original album covers, the very same music is also available as a single disc entitled WAVES IN THE ETHER. Consequently and fortunately, if one DOES prefer this 3-disc presentation, the appearance of that alternative on the market has significantly decreased the price of this earlier-released product.

4 out of 5 stars Good For A Trip To The Moon.......2004-07-23

I will be the first to confess that this is not the type of music that I would generally listen to on my own accord. The theremin is a peculiar instrument and it is used to good effect here. A word of caution though, if you are looking for a CD showcasing the theremin for the "spooky sounds" it is capable of, do not buy this CD. This is very melodic theremin and vocal jazz from the 1950s. All three volumes are very structured and emphasize harmonies. This is a strangely absorbing CD set, and I bought it for a very quirky reason.

I am an airline and former Air Force pilot, and Neil Armstrong has been my hero since childhood. When he went to the moon on Apollo 11 he took with him a tape of "Music Out Of The Moon", which he played in the tape player he shared with Buzz Aldrin and Mike Collins. He took it because it had long been a favorite of him and also his wife, Jan. He played some of the peculiar sounds over the NASA downlink at one point on the way home as a private message to Jan, much to the confusion of the flight controllers. Ever since I read the story I wanted to hear this recording and was not disappointed, although it isn't exactly what I expected, either. For more information, see "First On The Moon", by Armstrong, Aldrin, and Collins. Since the time of these recordings many other artists have experimented with the theremin, including Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin.

If you like music from the 1950s you will like this. If you like experimental music you will like this. I only gave it four stars as a value statement: the set is rather expensive and contains three CDs, yet there is only about an hour of material total, which seems a bit excessive. A better package would have had all three volumes on one CD, but then nobody would pay thirty dollars for it I suppose.

Bottom line: give it a listen. If it's good enough for Neil, it's good enough for me.

3 out of 5 stars Unique & rewarding, but for hardcore fans only.......2004-05-22

Be warned, most of your money spent on this so-called "box set" will be paying for the gatefold-style casing, paper disc sleeves and the accompanying 28-page booklet. Each of these albums clock in at under 20 minutes, combining for a total of only 54 minutes of music across all three discs. Nonetheless, this is truly vintage; embodying the rapid, dashing orchestral sounds of WWII movie previews and Warner Brothers cartoons. Whenever my wife's friends hear this music, they always get a crooked face and say, "This sounds like an old Disney movie."

The first two discs, "Music Out Of The Moon" and "Perfume Set To Music" (arranged by Les Baxter), sound like a game show orchestra tuning in some otherworldy sounds; Hoffman's theremin flirts alongside a piano, harp, strings, and even a vocal choir (not quite the Ray Conniff style if that irritates you). The great Billy May conducts the last disc, "Music For Peace Of Mind". The expressive song titles on this disc indicate the gentle mood that is intended, emphasized by wavy flutes and strings. The first track, "This Room Is My Castle Of Quiet", swallows my thoughts up and takes me away every time I hear this. Hoffman restrains himself with the theremin; most of the songs have small passages where he is buried deep within the orchestra or not heard at all.

The aforementioned booklet details the theremin's origin, as well as an explaination of Hoffman's induction into music (he was a chiropodist by trade). A couple of these tracks have appeared on Volume 3 of the Capitol Records Ultra-Lounge series, and I recommend buying that as well if this disc really excites you. I enjoy this box set but I would endorse it more for fans of lounge music than for fans of the theremin.

5 out of 5 stars Delightful!!!.......2002-03-23

Beautiful light orchestral compositions in the classic post-WW2 style, featuring the Theremin as a solo instrument. If you're looking for spooky sci-fi Theremin sound effects, this ain't it. (For that, check out the DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL soundtrack.) Discs 1 and 2 were orchestrated and conducted by the great Les Baxter, disc 3 by Billy May, when both were only in their late 20s. I bought this set to add to my extensive Les Baxter collection, and am very glad I did! As to why 3 discs when all the music could've fit onto one, I wondered that too until my set arrived in this morning's mail. Each disc comes in its own little sleeve that reproduces the cover art and liner notes from the original 78rpm album, plus an excellent accompanying booklet with more notes. A perfect collector's item!

5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!.......2004-07-19

I felt compelled to write a review after finding some incorrect information in another Amazon review. This is not a remix album!! There is one remix on here, Too Late, Too Early, a remix of Feeler's Too Early, Too Late, which also happens to be my favourite track on the album. This was released as a "teaser" for their full length album Feeler. Both releases are very original and innovative. You get a very organic feel in what is, save some guitars in places and of course beautiful vocals, electronic music.dancy in palces, and etheral and ambient in others. Very well balanced If you want a better taste of their music, check out http://minumum.ca . This is the label the former members of Perfume Tree are on. They have changed ranks and reformed as Veloce. The site offers streaming radio of much of their music. Check it out! and also, Veloce's website: http://veloce.ca. cheers!

5 out of 5 stars Moody, Hypnotic, electronic yet not fake sounding........1999-10-12

I love this CD to Death. It has great rythm that keeps the music moving. It is hypnotic and the female vocals can really carry you away. Most songs have a dance club like feel to them which makes them quite danceable, yet they are very moody and hypnotic as well, which make them great to just listen to while driving or as background music. Most songs have an electronic sound to them as well as a raw sound. It is a great combination; similar to what Sky Cries Mary does. It has synthesized elements but they are well chosen and fit very well with the more raw sounding analog sounds.

3 out of 5 stars A Taste of Things to Come.......1999-07-11

If you enjoy their 'Feeler' cd, you will likely enjoy these songs and their re-mixes very much. It is not like their previous release very much. One thing for certain: there is alot of music to listen to here....well over 55 minutes at an ep price. Some of the songs clock in at over 10 minutes and get a little worn, but it is ok since it is a song and remix collection. Well worth the money........check it out.

5 out of 5 stars Unusual Vietnamese music.......2002-09-20

This Vietnamese classical court ensemble plays in a style which dates from the 11th Century. For a while during the Vietnam War, the city of Hue retained its sacrosanct hands-off status, but eventually got engulfed by the conflict. The ensemble, meanwhile, became cultural ambassadors -- a position they continue to fill. The striking thing about the repertoire is how closely it resembles classical Chinese and Japanese music, with koto-like lutes and languid vocals, rather than the quirky and hypnotic folk styles of various Vietnamese provinces. Meditative, stately music... definitely worth checking out!
