On this CD, vocalist Karrin Allyson generously shares the spotlight with a trio of guests, one of whom comes in from an unexpected angle. Indeed, Chris Caswell doesn't sing or play an instrument here: What he's done is set lyrics to some classic jazz instrumentals by the likes of John Coltrane, Nat "Cannonball" Adderley and Wayne Shorter. (A few of these tracks have been renamed--"a detail that has to do with royalties," as the liner notes explain.) The other two guests are Jon Hendricks (whose little whistled solo on "Strollin'" is rather cute) and the Pacific Northwest-based scat expert Nancy King. King shows up on 6 of the 13 tracks and the manner in which her and Allyson's voices-—both equally burnished and agile--dialogue, particularly on "Life Is a Groove (Jordu)" is unusually lovely. Add to the mix a tight core group comprised of Bruce Barth (piano), Peter Washington (bass), and Todd Strait (drums), and you've got yourself an excellent jazz album. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

5 out of 5 stars How did I not hear of Karrin Allyson .Love her style and interpretation of a song........2007-03-07

Turned on my car radio a couple of weeks ago to WBGO NPR Jazz out of Newark,NJ and heard this great vocal rendition of Dizzy's Con Alma and was totally mesmerized. The singers voice and style were just perfect for the song, almost as though the song written more than 50 years ago was waiting for these beautiful lyrics and this wonderfull singers heart-felt rendition. I just flipped. Thanks to Amazon search and sample takes, I came up with Karrin Allyson and this terrific CD "Footprints".
Karrin handles every tune creativly and with class and style, and what a style. I thought I was hip to all the good jazz singers on the scene, but wow, did I miss her. Karrin swings like crazy on the up tunes and sings with tremendous feeling on the ballads. The choice of songs on this CD are a terrific blend of some of the best jazz of the 50"s and 60's that every real jazz fan knows, since they are trully jazz classics. This CD gives them a whole set of new imaginative lyrics and fresh new arrangements. This group plays as one, and you sense they have played together for a long period. The addition of Jon Hendricks and Nancy King really make this CD even more outstandinng.Chris Caswell's Lyrics are brilliant and a perfect fit, all these many years later.
Jordu, Strollin, But I was Cool, Never Say Yes---all swing.Footprints and Con Alma are just beautifull ballads. What can I say but that this is one of the best vocal albums I have ever listened to.
I can't believe this is Karrin Allysons 10th CD and I never new of her. She is one of those few singers that makes the song she sings her song, and you will always associate these tunes with her after hearing this CD
Now I guess I just have to order some of these CD's she's released through the years to catch up with her, and enjoy even more of this fantastic singers work.
I see Karrin's going to be in my town, New York, at Birdland in May '07 and at the Lichfield Jazz concert in Connecticut in August '07. You better believe I won't miss those performances. I bet she must be just great in a jazz club. I really have to make up for lost time.
Not to buy this CD would be one big mistake.I listen to it over and over. Concord, you just have to have Allyson do another one with the same theme. There are so many other Jazz Classics crying out for her to interprete. Let's do a whole bunch of these CDs and you can add even more of your talented guest to join in, as you did with "Footprints"
What a delight.....Long live this great music.

4 out of 5 stars Karrin needs to do a live album!.......2006-11-24

First of all, even the KA albums I care for least are still worth listening to. She never fails to stretch the song list and try something new, which is beyond commendable in my book.

I've seen Karrin numerous times live, and she is truly amazing, especially as a singer (although she's truly a musician). Her interplay with other musicians, the audience, and the songs is remarkable. She is comfortable and playful on stage, and willing to mess around with arrangements/solos/lyrics etc. in a loose and fun way. I most recently saw her at the Green Mill in Chicago (great great place) and her interplay with Todd Strait (her longtime drummer, and one of the best IMHO) and Larry Kohut (local bassist who seems to be playing melodies all the time, even when not soloing) was spectacular.

That said, her recent albums (this one, Wild for You, In Blue) have failed to capture that spirit, and sound a bit flat to me. The songs on Footprints really came alive in performance, especially Turnaround, which really rocked, and listening to the album again, I wondered why it didn't have that life to it. Perhaps too much New York studio perfectionism was the culprit. My favorite album of hers is still Paris to Reo; expansive song list, vibrant performances, and always fun to listen to.

Karrin should do a live album that really shows people what she's all about as a performer. I think then many people who've not seen her in person would "get it", and really enjoy her musicianship. Perhaps if she recorded an album "live in the studio" that would help, since she and the musicians could play around as they do on stage.

If you get the chance to see Karrin perform, especially in a small club, please go; you won't be dissapointed!

5 out of 5 stars Knockout.......2006-08-21

Karrin Allyson from my native Kansas City, Mo. just gets better as time goes on. Her latest CD, "Footprints," is a knockout and deserves 6 stars out of 5. I am not a jazz-a-holic or an expert on technical music analysis, but as a jazz fan I am just blown away by Karrin's new one -- especially "Strollin" and "A Tree and Me." And the guest artists are superb. Keep it up, Karrin. Everyone should have the thrill of listening to "Footprints," a great addition to your already outstanding CD offerings.

4 out of 5 stars An altogether classy, sweet and very artistic rendering of instrumental standards, giving them new vigor and life.......2006-06-21

I discover Karryn Allison through this CD, and it is a happy discovery. I heard her rendition of Wayne Shorter's "Footprints" while shopping for books in a Barnes & Noble type bookstore in the Midwest, and immediately went over and bought the CD.

My personal favorites:

-Dizzy's "Con Alma" opens the CD beautifully. Her rendition adds a melancholy introspection to a tune that I have traditionally heard instrumentally with an entirely impersonal to serene feel. As a singer myself I have sung this tune with jazz choirs in churches in Harlem as an alternative to the usual hymn (it means "with [the] soul" in Spanish).

-"When some girl asks for your number, never say yes..." both the trio accompaniment of the two women on this cut of "All You Need to Say" and the lyrics are just about flawless. The choices of both of them in their improvisations compliment these qualities--and each other--beautifully. This tune makes me happy, the way a kid with a funny secret surrounded by cool acting adults feels.

-I am a nut for brilliant rhythmic improvisation, reconnecting jazz to its African roots. This cut of "Lazy Bird," with a deceptive syncopation which took me a minute to figure out, shows once again the talent of this trio.

-As I said I bought the entire CD for the cut of "Footprints." A song as perfectly written and performed as this one (Wayne's Shorter's African blues written for and performed by the second great Miles Davis Quintet of the sixties) is, as history has shown, often too intimidating to other instrumentalists let along singers to express via their own voice. Karryn makes this song her own, betraying (for lack of a better word) much of the African rhythmic pulse of the original without in actuality decaffeinating its essence. This one in particular has her and the feel established overshadowing the quality of the lyrics, yet the pianism and the muted trumpet, combined with the unexpected duo work of her and the pianist, makes it hauntingly original and beautiful enough to inspire poetry.

-And I cannot short shrift the presence of the Master himself: "Everybody's Boppin'" has some solo work from special guest Jon Hendricks that is joyfully exquisite.

Not every tune on the CD lives up to these gems...but then isn't that true of most CDs?

As I trained opera singer as well as composer/arranger studied in jazz, Karryn's vocal technique worries me at times. She's too young to show the effect of straining in her voice that usually accompanies chain-smoking singers almost twice her age. (Someone even makes a comment about this being one of her somewhat unfortunate trademarks on the liner notes of the CD.) Both her youth and this unnatural strain are evident in her pretty voice on some of the cuts. The right voice teacher could not only get rid of that without replacing it with an inauthentic sound but ensure that her very special artistry is around for another few decades.

All in all I have played this CD many times since buying it and enjoy it immensely. I recommend this--and her--highly, and will be picking up more of her work in the near future.

5 out of 5 stars Vocalese - done to perfection!.......2006-05-20

This new CD, "Footprints," is by far one of Ms. Allyson's finest outings to date...and I truly echo Rick's words here!

It is not an easy task to take some of the finest instrumental classics in jazz and add lyrics, but Chris Caswell gets a huge tip of the hat for a fine job. Add some killer contributions from Nancy King (who deserves wider recognition) and Jon Hendricks (Mr. Vocalese), and you've got a fine album in which the sum total (in my book) equals all of its individual parts.

Far and away, my two favorite tracks are "But I Was Cool," with a killer flute solo by Frank Wess, and the rapid-fire "Everybody's Boppin'", where all the voices are joined together (reminiscent of Lambert, Hendricks and Ross). The memory of the late, great Oscar Brown, Jr. is preserved on this disc with two songs - it broke my heart to know that he passed on just months before having a chance to add his talent to the proceedings.

Thanks Karrin - can't wait to see what you come up with next time!

The only thing more astonishing than the originality and complexity of tenor saxophonist-composer Wayne Shorter's music is that this CD is his first live recording as a leader. Captured in Europe in the summer of 2001, Shorter's compositions are reinvented by Danilo Perez's sterling pianisms, John Patitucci's rock-steady bass lines, and drummer Brian Blade's stunning synthesis of Elvin Jones and Tony Williams' styles. "Masquelero," "Sanctuary," and the hypnotic "Footprints" are resurrected from his stint in Miles Davis's '60s combos. "Go," the African-derived "Juju," and Shorter's ingenious arrangement of Jean Sibelius's "Valse Triste" come from his Blue Note LPs of the same era. The moody melodicisms of "Atlantis" and the Afro-Eurasian evocations of "Aung San Suu Kyi," named for the Burmese political activist, are from Shorter recordings from 1985 and 1997. Simply put, Wayne Shorter is a jazz god, and these are his sacred sonic scriptures. Eugene Holley Jr.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars My favourite Wayne Shorter.......2005-04-17

'Footprints Live!' holds a special place in my heart. I have been a Shorter fan for some time now, and am a big fan of his Blue Note albums, his Miles albums, his Jazz Messengers albums, and 'Alegria'. On 3rd March 2005, I went to see this quartet here in Dublin. I bought 'Footprints Live!' in the store at the door, for the very purpose of at least reliving the show a little bit at home. The show was incredible, and very different to this CD, but this CD is quite spectacular.

The ability of all four members of this band to suddenly inject a burst of energy is the most catching element. Blade is, in my opinion, the best of the four at this very task. Just listen to the end of 'Masqualero', in which the other three instruments cut out to leave Blade with a simple cymbal pattern for a few beats, upon which Danilo Perez returns with a vamp to die for, under which Blade lets loose again.

I found Perez to be the most difficult of the quartet to enjoy, simple because I found his playing to be a little bit stiff. But my feelings on that matter quickly changed, as I started to listen to the interaction between himself and Blade. In my opinion, Perez is a little bit lacking in harmonic creativity at times, but he makes excellent use of some otherwise stunning chops, and an excellent rhythmic creativity.

Out of the three musicians backing Shorter, John Patitucci has covered the most ground, having played with such greats as Chick Corea and Alan Pasqua since the 80s. He not only manages to shine on an electric bass, but also manages to equal those talents on an upright bass. To think that the finest interaction is between Blade and Perez would be a mistake, as Patitucci may well be what gels them together.

I recommend this CD to you because it is half magic, and half music, as many have stated.

3 out of 5 stars ALL SIMMER--NO BOIL.......2005-04-07

Check out the booklet that accompanies this CD. Shorter's image is caught sometimes in full, sometimes distorted, and sometimes lonely partially. In many ways this is a perfect metaphor for this album. Shorter's masterpieces from the past are presented as if turned inside out and amusing things are found. The arrangements tend to be spare and having a lot of sonic space between the instruments. This leaves an almost "minimalist" impression except paying attention to detail reveals a lot of activity going on between the players.

This approach points to the problem I have with this album. Short periods of intense listening shows some brilliant playing and interplay. Unfortunately, across the entire length of the album my mind wandered. Shorter and company play as if they were a cluster of low-key volcanoes and I kept waiting someone to rip the top off and erupt. They never do.

This is likely to strike some as tasteful restraint. I am simply not convinced. There is no question Shorter is a jazz great whose reputation is secure musical history. Others will certainly disagree; but this strikes me a coasting.

5 out of 5 stars The space of freedom and meaning.......2005-03-20

I heard this group live in Stockholm the other day, and this experience made me fully realize what this CD is about. Being primarily a classical and world music listener, I tend to get put off by jazz, being either too formal and predictable or too chaotic and meaningless. This music is in the perfect orbit. You still feel the gravity, beauty and order of the earth, but never plunge back into the predictable. Yet you are in the widened space, but never get disconnected and lost in entropy and meaningslessness. In a sense, my whole life as a listener has been in search of this place, and this CD is one of the few that takes me there, now that I've heard this music live.

5 out of 5 stars Modern Jazz at its Finest.......2004-05-04

Wayne Shorter has always been able to flow from one stage to the next. This group now is an embarkment from where he was since he seldom played after his Weather Report days. To say it briefly, Wayne Shorter is back with vegence. His newly re-arranged and re-harmonized versions of a few of his old classics and some other classic tunes make this album extremely enjoyable. The sense of freedom and modal playing embellished the entire album. While this is a landmark album for Wayne, showing his return to all acoustic jazz, this is a landmark album in general in jazz. Groups like Dave Holland are also in this trend in the sense that they rely heavily on interplay and constant improvisation...the root and soul of jazz. Pick this one up, one of the finest tenor/soprano players alive with a fresh new group.

5 out of 5 stars SICK IMPROVISATION!.......2004-04-07

i dont have this album, but i just saw them in concert (this band) and it blew my mind how good they were! i was laughing the whole time it was so good! Pattitcci is amazing as well as shorter of course! People (old geezers) were walking out b/c it wasn't "jazzy enough". This is hip music not to be messed with and this is a "supergroup" in jazz today. No one is better than these guys!

3 out of 5 stars She is just 'OK'.......2006-02-08

Holly's debut can be considered good, but she really need to find her style..and her voice is not ready in the album...needs more vocal training??? overall Kiss-Kiss and Downboy has unique melody and probably the best songs from the album.

5 out of 5 stars footprints HOLLY VALANCE.......2004-07-07

13 Outstanding songs!!! Because their all quite evenly balanced, I will review about half of them.

1. KISS KISS- A very creative re-make from a the Turkish version. I love the violins and the lyrics are sang quite fast and the video's alright too. 99%
3. Down Boy- The chorus is more like a verse, in comparison to, the tempo, and therefore the entire flow of the song. But anyway, Holly Valance always have songs with a really good beat, and flow. I will give this track 94%
4. City Ain't Big Enough- A bit of a girly song, quite different, contrary even to all of thhe other tracks, but that can only mean one thing....... ORIGIANLAITY!!!. She should try doing that in some of her other songs. 94%
5. Cocktails and Parties- My second favourite song, not at the moment, but altogether (if you know what I mean.) It is a great dance song and have all the features a good song needs. to go far. 100%
10. Help me, Help You- SO CREATIVE!!! SO WEIRD!!! and odd, but that just makes me love this song even more. 93%
11. Naughty Girl- Debuted at #3 (W After; #4) and went Gold in Australia. I believe that Holly could pick a better single thatn this. 81%

Therefore, A great CD with great artwwork
and great video clips
and great songs
I believe that all pop CDs should have lyrics though.

1 out of 5 stars Embarassing album........2004-05-20

I picked this album up for wait for it - 99p! Bargain bin madness! I'd never heard a Holly Valance song but was under the impression it was a dancey kind of album. Its good to have some rubbish dance music in the background, something that is unintelligent enough to make sure im not distracted from my workout! But this was just EMBARASSING. Yes, all the songs apart from 2 or 3 were upbeat and easy to dance to but NO WAY could I play it on a high volume. I think her voice was tremendously awful and the music was your typical generic crappy modern pop. Songs 3, 4, 7, 8 , 9 and 12 were just about bearable on a low volume. The rest were just cringworthy. But to think this album is out there being offered for 30 dollars? Good gosh! buy yourself the Dannii Minogue neon nights album instead, this album you can VERY much do without!

4 out of 5 stars Impressed.......2004-05-10

I was very impressed after hearing 3 times her debut album. At first i didn't like it at all.I only enyojed "Kiss Kiss","Down Boy" "City Ain't Big Enough" "Cocktails and Parties" and "Naughty Girl".

1.-Kiss Kiss-9.Is a cover song.Well she has changed the lyrics but the rhythm is the same than a turkish song. Her first single and very catchy. Is very strange that if you have listened to this song,it didn't stuck on your head.
2.-Tuck Your Shirt In-9.At first I found this song very similiar to "Kiss Kiss".But is a very cool dance song.I love the beats and the vocals
3.-Down Boy-9,5.Her second single and the best one.It has infectious beats with a great chrous. You will dance this song a lot.
4.-City Ain't Big Enough-8,5.A Midtempo song.It has cool lyrics and its easy to sing along to.Is very catchy too.
5.-Cocktails and Parties-8.This song reminds me a lot on two All Saints's songs:"Pure Shores" and "Black Coffee".It has similiar beats and vocals. The chrous is very catchy.
6.-Whoop!-8,5.At first i heated this song. But is the most dancey song in the album. The lyrics may be stupid but is so catchy
7.-Hush Now-9,5-I didn't liked this song too.But is a grower! It has the best beat without a doubt!.Very cathcy, dancey and the end of the song is awesome.
8.-All In The Mind-9.I love the chrous and her vocals. The beat is superb! You will love this.
9.-Harder They Come-6,5.Is a slower song compared with the others. But it isn't a ballad at all.Is ok to listen to.
10.-Help Me Help You-7,5-Ballad song.It has cool lyrics but the chrous is a bit simple.
11.-Naughty Girl-9,5-Her third single and one of the best songs in the album. Its very catchy and the verses are different compared with the rest of the songs.Good beat
12.-Connect-6-I don't care a lot about this one.It has a good beat thought.
13.-Send My Best-6-Same as number 12.

4 out of 5 stars GOOD ALBUM!!.......2003-09-07

I don't understand the negative reviews. Holly Valance is very talented and I love the song "Naughty Girl." Buy this album, ignore the bad reviews!

4 out of 5 stars Great Female Blues artist, with strong sexual overtones.......1998-07-18

If you like songs with funny sexual overtones, this is the Blues album for you. As a DJ for Swing, Shag & Bop dancers, I use Footprints on the Ceiling and Can't cut the Mustard as dance songs. All the other songs have from mild to strong sexual overtones. In general, I find the lyrics funny and her blues style appealing.

5 out of 5 stars Life long music.......2003-10-08

I have loved this album and also Tomita's Mussorgsky album ever since my Mom first played it for us in 1974 to help us fall asleep at night. I have an ancient cassette copy I've been playing ever since. Now I play them for my children at night and use to great effectiveness when meditating. This music is truly timeless and moves the soul. I have yet to find any other music that can truly relax me in the manner this does. (Maybe I revert to being five and sleeping in my parents bed!) Anyway, I would highly recommend it to anyone who appreciates classical, electronic or new-age music although I am none of these! Turn out all the lights, get comfortable, and let this wonderful music soothe your soul.

5 out of 5 stars Complete list of Tomita's classical albums..........2002-03-05

..."Snowflakes Are Dancing" is definitely one of Tomita's best, but a big box set of every classical Tomita album on CD would be even better. Most of the Tomita albums that have been out of print for years are absolutely fantastic.

        Here's the complete list...

Snowflakes Are Dancing 1974 (11 Debussy pieces) The newly remastered CD is an audiophile recording, adds Prelude To The Afternoon of a Faun and is available for a good price.

Pictures At An Exhibition 1975 (Mussorgsky)

Firebird 1976 (Stravinsky: Firebird. Debussy: Prelude To The Afternoon of A Faun. Mussorgsky: Night On Bald Mountain)

        The Planets 1976 (Holst)

Kosmos 1978 (Star Wars Title. Space Fantasy- R. Strauss: 2001 Title, Wagner: Ride of The Valkyries and Tannhauser Overture. Honnegar: Pacific 231. Ives: Unanswered Question. Rodrigo: Aranjuez. Grieg: Solveig's Song. Dinicu-Heifetz: Hora Staccato. Bach-Tomita: The Sea Named Solaris)

The Bermuda Triangle 1979 (Sibelius: Valse Triste. And excerpts from... Williams: Close Encounters. Prokofiev: Romeo and Juliet, Scythian Suite, Symphonies 5 and 6, Violin Concerto 1. My favorite electronic CD.)

Bolero 1980 (Ravel: Daphis and Chloe. Pavane for A Dead Princess. Bolero. Mother Goose Suite)

        The Grand Canyon 1982 (Grofe)

Canon of The Three Stars 1984 (Pachelbel: Canon. Rachmaninoff: Vocalise. Albinoni: Adagio. Bach: Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring. 4 pieces from Villa Lobos: Bachianis Brasileiras 2, 4, and 7)

Live At Linz, Austria 1985 (With big speakers on both sides of the Danube River and live soloists. Includes 7 pieces from previous albums plus Stravinsky: The Rite of Spring. Japanese Traditional: Cranes In Their Nest. Vaughn Williams: The Lark Ascending. Wagner: Tristan Und Isolde-Liebestod. Beethoven: Ode To Joy with full Choir.)

Live In New York 1988 (Includes 7 pieces from previous albums plus Dukas: Fanfare. Mahler: Symphony 3 in D Minor - 5th Movement. Traditional: Chinese War Lord Going Home. Gershwin: Rhapsody In Blue. Fisher-Dvorak: Goin' Home.)

These last two are my all time favorite live concert CDs by far.

5 out of 5 stars My search has ended.......1999-08-07

I first heard this recording years ago on an album borrowed from a library. I have never forgotten it and have searched for it throughout the years. I am thrilled beyond measure to have finally found it. This music is hauntingly beautiful.

this is one of the FINEST cd's you'll own...trust me

5 out of 5 stars The works of Debussy , by Tomita ,capture the essence........1999-04-15

The works of Claude Debussy , like the works of the great impressionistic artists of the times , mark the transition from formal classical music forms to the modern era . Debussy for me is the foremost genius of the impressionistic musical form. Isao Tomita far exceeds the work of Walter/ Wendy Carlos or any other synthesizer artists I have heard.
