Manuel Barrueco is one of the best guitarists I've ever heard. Listen to his own arrangement of Albeniz's Suite Española and you'll have trouble believing it's only two hands on one guitar. But Barrueco doesn't use his technique to show off. He's a solid musician, as expressive in Bach as in Villa- Lobos. He also makes transcriptions that respect the origins of the music. This is a wide-ranging guitar collection, but all the music is worth hearing, especially in performances like these. The disc is one of the best bargains among all guitar recordings, and Vox's recordings still sound like a guitar. --Leslie Gerber

Illuminating.......2007-07-04
I'm a thoughtful and introspective person with a diverse background. Of all the old countries, Spain's diverse background appealed to me. This music reflects that appeal.
Essential recordings.......2007-04-06
Not much else really to say about this. It is a collection of brilliant interpretations and the guitar has the most amazing sound I've ever heard on a recording. You will find yourself almost spiritually bound to share this recording with any classical guitar playing friends and aficionados.
Exquisite.......2006-12-14
I was browsing Amazon, shopping for gifts, and when I listened to the snippets of this, I couldn't resist ordering it for myself. It's a 3CD set of beautiful, varied music played by a brilliantly skilled and sensitive master. Barrueco has an extraordinary touch that seems perfect for each piece, from Bach to Paganini to Villa-Lobos. Anyone who likes classical guitar would treasure this set.
The "cool school" of guitar playing.......2006-10-26
This three CD collection is a reissue of Cuban born virtuoso Manuel Barrueco's early Vox LPs, recorded in the late 1970s to early 1980s. Included in this set is his stunning performance of selections by Spanish composers Isaac Albéniz and Enrique Granados. This 1978 Albéniz/Granados recording is perhaps the greatest example of what I call the "cool school" of guitar playing, eschewing color and warmth in favor of restraint, taste, and note perfect execution. One complaint: in this reissue VoxBox inexplicably spread the Albéniz/Granados selections over three CDs.
Bach and others on the Guitar.......2006-08-10
A wonderful combination between the Great Bach and a master of Guitar

DG has put together a fascinating compilation of Segovia's art that reminds us what a protean figure he was. Segovia single-handedly put the instrument on the map by making classical guitar concerts popular events, broadening the instrument's repertory through commissions and transcriptions, and convincing even doubters that it could be a vehicle for serious music. He's heard here in brief pieces recorded between 1952 and 1969. Even in those made when he was well into his 70s, his fingers remain nimble and interpretations lively. Listening straight through, one hears many all-time Segovia favorites as Turina's Sevillana and Albeniz's Asturias and Zambra Granadina and renews appreciation for path-breaking composers like Castelnuovo-Tedesco. He wrote extensively for Segovia and his Capriccio diabolico and Tonadilla are pieces of real substance. Disc two is largely made up transcriptions and it's amazing how well so many of them work on the guitar, at least under Segovia's magic fingers. Thus the transformations of Bach's violin music and even a Chopin Prelude sound idiomatic, and the gorgeous melodies of the Canzonetta from Mendelssohn's Op. 12 String Quartet are irresistible here. An entrancing set. --Dan Davis

A Man and His Art - Magnificently Captured.......2007-04-06
This 2-CD set produced by Deutche Grammmophon and first released in 2002 is one set of the hundreds that could have been or the dozens that actually have been made and sold successfully all over the world. The exceptional feature of this particular collection is not, of course, the performer. Quite to the contrary, the miraculous consistency of stylings and performance are amongst the most remarkable aspects of the man who was, arguably, the 20th Centry's virtuoso supreme of the classical guitar, Andres Segovia (1893-1987.) Rather, it is the collection itself - the pieces chosen to be produced on this one set - this, to steal a German word, gestalt. While his style did not remain constant throughout his long life and career, by the time he had developed his most masterful skills that included doing his own arrangements - the era represented on this particular set (1951-1960) - his playing had become completely his own - unchallenged and unmatched by even other clearly great guitarists with whom he shared this era.
There are a total of 31 pieces played on these CDs and while a playlist would be an unnecessary use of space here, a list of the composers represented is not. More than the specific pieces Segovia gives us here, the range of composers chosen by the compilers and editors - with each piece rearranged by Segovia himself, tells us a great deal about his interests, talents and musical range. These composers include:
Isaac Albeniz, Johann Sebastian Bach, Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Frederic Chopin, Claude Debussy, John Dowland, Manuel de Falla, Cesar Franke, Girolamo Frescobaldi, Edvard Grieg, George Frederic Handel, Felix Mendelsohn, Frederico Moreno Torroba, Modest Mussorgsky, Nicolo Paganini, Felipe Pedrell, Manuel Ponce, Jean-Philippe Rameau, Joaquin Rodrigo, Albert Roussel, Domenico Scarlatti, Alexander Scriabin, Segovia's own composition of Estudio sin luz, Fernando Sor, Francisco Tarrega, Joaquin Turina and Heitor Villa-Lobos. A truly magnificent and broad ranging collection held together by Segovia's unique personal style, approach and sound.
Largely self-taught, Andres Segovia did things with a guitar that others only imagined. He didn't just play Bach, for example - music written for an entirely different type of instrument (keyboards.) He went a step further, and recorder Bach's keyboard lessons written for his students (the Two and Three Part Inventions) and made them sound as if they had been written for the guitar! His artistry is evident to even the casual listener and in this collection, any devote of classical guitar and/or of Segovia as an individual artist, will not be disappointed.
Perfect listening for anytime. Hypnotic and, simply, unsurpassed. A necessary addition to any serious classical guitar collection.
What can you say - it's Segovia!.......2007-02-10
I saw Segovia perform live in my youth. What a treat! Anyone who loves Classical Guitar should love this collection.
EVERYBODY KNOWS.......2007-01-13
EVERYBODY KNOWS THAT ANDRES SEGOVIA WAS/IS THE WORLD'S GREATEST CLASSICAL GUITAR PLAYER. THIS CD IS A COMPILATION OF HIS RECORDINGS FROM THE THE EARLY 50'S TO THE LATE 60'S. HIS GUITAR MASTERY IS UNQUESTIONED AND HE IS AN INSPIRATION. I WISH I COULD PLAY GUITAR LIKE ANDRES SEGOVIA (BUT I CAN'T AND I NEVER WILL!).
Immortal guitar.......2006-08-02
Two CD's with Segovia's immortal music - an incredible treat at a great price!
WOW.......2006-02-23
Even though there is hiss from the original analog recordings this one is a must. Segovia! What more can you say. Anyone who likes classical guitar will love this.

Brilliant Conducting and Essential Interpretation.......2006-05-07
Shame, shame, shame on the reviewer who says Domingo is not a conductor. This is the most moving, soul satisfying performance I have ever heard of the Rodrigo Concerto. I originally heard this on my local classical musical station, and I nearly caused a traffic accident when THAT passage played: I am sure you know what passage I am talking about. I am not exaggerating, this piece makes love to you. Most recordings are too fast and sterile. This one sent me orbiting.
Spanish Soul Concerto.......2005-11-25
Rodrigo's Concierto De Aranjuez has never sounded more Spanish than on this EMI recording conducted by Spanish tenor Placido Domingo. Aside from his career as a tenor, Domingo has for a few years since the 90's developed as a conductor as well. This natively Spanish album of guitar and orchestral music is wholly suited to his talents. I love the opening movement, allegro con spirito, with its brisk, jovial rhythms and it is a sharp contrast from the sensually slow adagio. The rest of the album contains Spanish orchestral pieces and songs, almost the equivalent of Lieder. Especially when sung by Domingo, "Capilllas De Belen" "Un Tiemp Fue Italica Famosa" and "Coplas del Pastor" are romantic Spanish Lieder. The "Fantasy for a Knight" - Fantasia Para Un Gentilhombre" is admirably executed. EMI has done a lot of great albums that prominently feature Domingo and this is one that speaks to his authentically Spanish soul...and to the Spanish audience.
"Adagio" is very authentic !!!!!.......1999-08-13
The second movement of this great composition is indeed the most authentic version I have ever heard since I first listened to this masterpiece 25 years ago .Andre Previn's version is also excellent. I have heard John Williams's version and respectfully submit that Manuel Barrueco truly captures the soul and spirit of Joaquin Rodrigo in a Concierto clearly composed for the Gods!!!!!!
Big Disappoinment !.......1999-04-29
We were expecting that this recording of the Concierto D' Aranjuez came out to be the best, but it shows one more time that only John Williams's recording with the Philharmonia Orchestra bring to the audience the authentic message from the composer. On Manuel's recording is very difficult to hear the guitar and the sound sometime is very weak. Manuel decided to take a lot of notes out on technical challenge parts, maybe he did not know how to practice those parts or he did not have enough time to prepare the piece. I would like to say that Placido Domigo is not a conductor, a good musician can tell the diference between this reocording conducted by Placido and a recording conducted by a real and professional conductor. I will buy twenty times John Williams's recording then this CD.

Curious and Modern Inventions.......2007-05-03
The phrase "Italian baroque violin music" no longer conjures up exclusively the music of Corelli and Vivaldi, thanks to recordings such as this one by the English baroque ensemble Romanesca. As Romanesca has shown us in disc after disc of Biber, Schmelzer, and other composers, 17th-century violin music is an exciting antidote to the sewing-machine facility of the later Italian baroque. This disc takes us to the first half of the 17th century, when the violin had recently acquired its modern form with the Amatis and other makers, and composers were starting to develop a distinctive idiom for the new instrument. Perhaps the most distinguished of these early violin composers was Biagio Marini (c.1587-1663) of Brescia, a violinist at San Marco in Venice who played under Monteverdi's direction.
The compositions on this disc are from three different Marini publications: opus 3, 8, and 22 (his last published collection). They fall under three types: pieces for solo violin and continuo, trio sonatas, and dances and other short pieces for string quartet (!) with continuo. Among the highlights are the SONATA QUARTA for violin (track 6, an attempt to adapt vocal monody, the expressive recitative of early opera, to instrumental terms); ROMANESCA (track 7), based on a ground bass shared with "Greensleeves"; the 12-minute PASS'E MEZO (track 15), a prismatic variations piece; and especially the poignant, eloquent PASSACAGLIO (track 8). Everywhere, Marini's harmonic boldness and his distinctive, bittersweet lyricism are in evidence.
Early baroque music often looks plain on the page but yields expressive riches through an imaginative interpretation; violinist Andrew Manze and his colleagues (including John Toll on harpsichord and Nigel North on chitarrone) illustrate this beautifully. Their commitment to giving the pieces coherent shape through dynamics, expression, and other means is clear. This is especially relevant for the solo violin sonatas, which on the page look like haphazard splotches of sound but emerge here as arresting, highly expressive utterances. Manze's flamboyant style is appropriate to the sonatas, but his expressive range is wide: compare his lovely, silky tone in the beginning of the ROMANESCA with the rapid, prickly divisions at the end of the piece. I have only a few reservations. I could have wished for a little more "affective embellishment" in the PASSACAGLIO, which is nonetheless performed in an appropriately grave and muted manner. I regretted the absence of a beautiful C major trio sonata from opus 22. And in general the succession of miniature ensemble pieces - as fine as they are - created a somewhat unsatisfying impression, making one wish for one or two more long compositions.
This disc is a fine place to start for anyone interested in exploring the instrumental side of the 17th-century Italian STIL MODERNO.
Great Music - Great Price.......2005-07-18
The period-instrument ensemble Romanesca performs works from Curiose & Moderne Inventioni, Op.12, and other publications by Biagio Marini (c1587-1663).
"You won't regret ordering this cd. The sounds are light and alive, but never overwhelming. Romanesca does not try to "prove" itself with this record. The music speaks for itself, with low moods displayed as such, and as said, high moods never so high, loud and fast that you feel you must turn down your player. Now that's a rare cd!" This recording brings the music of great composers from Mexico,Brazil, and Argentina. The Huapango by Moncayo is played beautiful and a well performed solo for trumpet and trombone.Sensemaya is played with virtuosity."Estrllita" is the best known of all Mexican song here arrenged for strings is very charming. The "Trezinho do Caipira" by Villa-Lobos is performed here to great effect by the orchestra and its percussion section. The Obertura Festiva by Halfter is performed with grace.Galindo's "Sones Macriachi" is also a piece where a mariachi gorup is immitated also to great effect by the orchestra and I think that Mr.Galindo captured the spirit of Mexico very well here. Its a great recording.Thank you Naxos... Well done Mr. Batiz
Exquisite Performance.......1999-08-03
Batiz does a magnificent job, especially with respect to Huapango. The orchestra is full and vibrant. As a brass player (trumpet), I listen especially close to this section of the orchestra. I must say that the brass met my expectations: they have great volume and lose neither control nor focus on fortissimo passages. All instruments with solo parts do an excellent job of finding a balance between projecting their sound and maintaining musicality. The trumpets in particular possess that "sizzling" or vibrating quality which characterizes the better players.

expresa. En esta grabaccion el maestro Batiz dirige
tres orquestas:la Royal Philharmonic, London Symphony;
y Orquesta Sinfonica del Estado de Mexico. Los
unicos conciertos que aqui no aparecen son: Concierto
para una Fiesta, y Concierto como un Divertimento.
Una grabaccion de recomendaccion maxima...
A great introduction to Rodrigo!.......2004-02-11
I had much of this material on vinyl, and it's great to have these packaged on 4 full budget-priced CDs. The sound is quite acceptable, although a little bright, which was common for early digital recordings from the 80's. But, they're otherwise clear and full. There are better recordings of the guitar concertos (which is a crowded field), but they hold up fairly well - and are better than Batiz' rerecordings of the some of the guitar concertos he did some 10 years ago on ASV.
The other concertos are quite nice as well. Distinctively Rodrigo-esque!
Anyone interested in this set will want to invest in Batiz' more recent survey with his Mexican State Orchestra of Rodrigo works.
Highly recommended!
Blind Can Hear..........2003-02-13
This is an album dedicated to the works of one of the most prominent Spanish composers of the 20th Century. His music is luscious, melodic, with uncompromised energy and excitement. Rodrigo was blind and had a love affair with the Concerto form, and this is Batiz's dedication to the man and his many works in that form.
I too disagree with the reviewer who said the recording was muddy. I think it captures the music well, and all of the soloists come out as intended in the score. I think the balance and tone are wonderful. I hope that helps!
Excellent Rodrigo compendium........1999-09-20
This is great music, with great performances, on a very good recording. (I disagree with the other online reviewer--to me the soloists sound crisp and rich.)
Rodrigo and Batiz deserve better than this,.......1998-10-30
As a long-time fan of Joaquin Rodrigo and a more recent fan of Enrique Batiz I eagerly looked forward to getting acquainted with some of Rodrigo's rarely heard pieces. Unfortunately thoses pieces will remain rarely heard due to the poor production quality of the CD. The sound was muddy and indistinct. Most of the tracks sound as if the microphone was under the stage. I had to strain to hear the guitar, harp, and flute soloists.

Outstanding music and great value!!.......2006-04-02
Narciso Yepes is my favorite classical guitarist. I was delighted to hear a couple guitar concertos I had never heard before. Ohana, Bacarisse, and Ruiz-Pipo were great discoveries. Again, Yepes is the BEST. Strongly recommended.
Excellent.......2005-08-22
The late Narciso Yepes is perhaps my favorite guitarist- Spanish or otherwse. With each of his recordings there is the sense of a madman, master, and poet at one with his instrument. I recently purchased "Guitarra espagnola" and have found endless enjoyment listening critically and as background while I work. This is the perfect "not background music" background music to play when you have guests. You and your guests will find yourself withdrawing from lively conversations to enjoy a poignant, sweet, or sinister moment with the music. This is a compilation of recordings from the past 20 to 30 years. The compositions span from the 17th to 20th century. The quality of the recordings is very good but at times varied. The availability of the compilation is very limited. Get it while you can! I also recommend Alirio Diaz and John Williams.
Very Highly Recommended.......2004-05-08
I cannot recommend this retrospective of just a small amount of Yepes's work highly enough.
No matter what popular and lay opinions may be about Williams, Bream, Segovia, and others, the greatest classical guitarist of the 20th century was Narciso Yepes. It is a pity and a shame that the fear of the older generation of guitarists and their associates made Yepes a marginal figure.
He was a consummate technician and a knowledgeable interpreter of all musical idioms from the Middle Ages through to the height of the 20th Century avant-garde. His playing was characterized by intelligence, sensibility, clarity, power, majesty, poetry, and a devilish ability to separate and sustain contrapuntal lines.
In this box of 5 CDs you will find the definitive performance of Rodrigo's now famous "Aranjuez" concerto, which, incidentally, was first recorded and made famous by Yepes. There are also 2 CDs with rare concertos by Salvador Bacarisse, Antonio Ruiz-Pipo, and Maurice Ohana.
The other 3 CD's contain generally the best performances of the canon of solo guitar works that you are likely to find. The composers include Sanz, Mudarra, Narvaez, Soler, Sor, Albeniz, Granados, Tarrega, De Falla, Turina, Bacarisse, Rodrigo, Llobet, Pujol, Moreno Torroba, Montsalvatge, Ohana, and Ruiz-Pipo.
Every guitarist and every lover of the instrument should own this set. If it is not available, also refer to a similar box set with the ASIN number B00006L6RN or another B000026ZRL.

Hands down, a winner!.......2005-03-25
Spanish piano music has been a love of mine ever since I first heard Alicia de Larrocha play back in the early 1970s. Through her I discovered the gorgeous, colorful, sunny worlds of Albeniz, Granados, Falla, Turina, and some modern Spaniards such as Surinach and Montsalvatge. I don't think she ever recorded any works by Rodrigo however, and this present CD by Artur Pizarro on Naxos is a revelation, as all the music was unknown to me until now.
This is a generous recital, about 70 minutes with a wide variety of music, from simple and soulful, to brilliant evocations of guitars and castanets. Rodrigo was always partial to the music of the sixteenth century and there are some pieces here reflecting that era, beautiful madrigal-like textures or gently strumming harp-like pieces. Artur Pizarro plays it all with immense verve, color and fantasy. A wonderful pianist!
Once again, Naxos has a winner on its hands, particularly at the extremely modest price. You cannot lose.
I can see already that I will be giving this CD as a gift quite a few times.
Irresistible!.......2005-01-23
Most people know Joaquín Rodrigo for his several concertos for guitar, foremost of which is his 'Concierto de Aranjuez,' which has certainly made it into classical music's top 100. But how many people know that he was a virtuoso pianist and wrote reams of solo piano music? Artur Pizarro, a Leeds International Piano Competiton winner and a real force on the international piano scene (and who grew up in Lawrence, Kansas, only a few miles from where I'm sitting right now) is the perfect pianist to bring us this music. He was born in Spain and his primary teacher was the eminent Portuguese-American pianist, Sequeira Costa, who was also his step-father. He plays with éclat and is given sparkling, lifelike sound by his recording engineer. I have been really enjoying this CD of virtually unknown music by Rodrigo (labeled '1' on the booklet cover, so maybe there is a series in the offing) as I have the series of Rodrigo orchestral CDs also coming out in the Naxos 'Spanish Classics' series. Naxos is to be praised for bringing us this music as well as that by Granados, Albéniz and de Falla as well as lesser-known composers like Guridi, Arámbarra and Donostia. Frankly I think Spanish music in general is underrated because of its immediate appeal to all listeners, including those who are not terribly versed in classical music. One reason is that the Spanish have two major elements in their favor--their lovely melodic sense and the beguiling rhythms taken from their folk music. I, frankly, am a sucker for most Spanish music except, I fear, for that written for the solo guitar. Maybe that's one reason I so like these piano pieces; they borrow rhythms from the guitar but without what, for me, is the wearisome sound of the guitar. I am aware that I am in a tiny minority here, but it has made me something of an aficionado of Spanish piano music as a result.
None of the music recorded here is in the same class as that of Granados or Albéniz. But, that said, all of it is extraordinarily attractive. Spanish rhythms abound. The sultry languor of the Spanish atmosphere suffuses this music. Can anyone hear these pieces without having a sensuous thrill? I doubt it. Rodrigo, of course, is one of Spain's most talented melody writers. I can't think of a single piece of his that doesn't have a singable melody. This CD contains numbers of what the Germans call an 'Ohrwurm' ('Earworm'), those melodies that you can't get out of your mind's ear once you've heard them.
It is hard for me to pick any favorites from the 23 tracks on this disc. But I will admit I kept going back to hear 'Pastoral,' one of Rodrigo's earliest works (indeed it was written when he was still a student) which reminds me of some of the deliciously unpretentious piano pieces by Federico Mompou (whose music, by the way, has also been recorded by Jordi Masó on Naxos; but there's an even better recent CD played by Stephen Hough on Hyperion). This is what someone has called 'foreground background music,' meaning music that sounds unpretentious enough to be played more or less unheard in the background, but whose felicities keep commanding your attention. Another favorite is 'Air de ballet sur le nom d'une jeune fille' ('Ballet Theme on a Young Girl's Name') whose title lets you in on the fact that Rodrigo was enormously influenced by the French impressionists--one of his main teachers was Paul Dukas--and uses many of their harmonic devices in his own nonetheless totally Spanish music.
At this budget price and with these totally committed performances by Pizarro in music that irresistible, you simply can't go wrong here.

Facinating Spanish Influence on Classical Forms.......2006-01-12
'Spanish Music of the Golden Age' by the Extempore String Ensemble is the sort of thing you want to hear when you are exploring some of the further reaches of classical European music. While the ensemble is the same collection of instruments you may find in a French, Italian, or German chamber ensemble between 1600 and 1700, the music has a distinctly Iberian lilt to it, almost as easily recognized as the hackneyed 'Irish' lilt.
If your primary interest is old SPANISH music, you may be more interested in Begona Olavide and similar folk centered music, but this shows the progression from Spanish folk to European classicism.
Recommended.
