The best of latin music through Domingo's voice.......1999-08-10

This CD goes wherever I go, it is with no doubt, the queen of my collection. Medleys are wonderfully orchestrated and arranged and every song makes you travel anywhere between Mexico and Buenos Aires. Here, Domingo's voice is more like a musical instrument than anything else and each song you'll discover a new instrument. Honestly, I would personally award it six stars.

Domingo's love for traditional Latin American music shines throughout this CD. A selection of great "standards", beautifully arranged and recorded by one of the world's great voices. "De Mexico a Buenos Aires," written by Domingo's son is the one original song on the recording and is one of many highlights here. I have listenned to this CD countless times over the past two years and it remains a delight.

Vivacious.......2006-12-20

I do think that possessing a fondness for the film helps (of which so many here have expressed), but by no means is it necessary. If anything, I find the seldom, more reflective, somber moments ("Mi Otra Mitad de Naranja") to capture the film's oft-haunting imagery to beautiful effect. The rest of the score, in my case, doesn't work as an album because of what it guts out of the film; it works because it's fabulous music.

Very distinct, too; I've never heard a film's score sound quite like 'Waking Life'. Really, that's where most my admiration comes from; it's not only an enthusiastically charming score, but it's uncommonly unique. That always earns points, whether or not the music is appealing; 'Waking Life' is effortlessly both.

dreamy but refreshing.......2006-03-09

I bought this because I loved the movie, both visually and philosophically. The soundtrack goes very well with the movie and is responsible for much of the surreal feel of it. But even listened to independently it's great.
The recording is kind of raw, there is little processing, and it may even be considered careless, but that's part of its charm.
The sound itself is pretty original (to me anyway). It's strings (one violin, one cello and one double bass, I think), piano and accordeon. The result is refreshing. That's probably the best word to describe this: refreshing, and of course, dreamy.

Quirky, Fun, Fantastic.......2004-01-14

I know nothing about tango; I got this soundtrack because I like the movie so much, and the music is such an important part of the movie's wandering, convoluted and dreamy feeling. I don't think I'll probably buy other Glover Gill albums, but this one is wonderful -- I often put it on while I'm working; it's great background music but it somehow manages to stay in the front of your mind.

Some reviewers have lamented the inclusion of Chopin's Nocturne on the album, but this CD was my first experience of the piece, and I love it. It has a totally different flavor from the rest of the tracks, so it provides a nice break.

The only bad thing about this album is that it gets a little repetitive. That's part of the nature of the music, which makes sense in the movie, but because many of the tracks have these climbing melodies that repeat and spiral ever upward, I find that after one listen to the whole thing I've had enough, and I'll stay away from the CD for a while. But that doesn't diminish its value in my opinion -- certainly one of the more interesting soundtracks I own, and I recommend it especially to people who've seen the movie, but also to the more adventurous of those who haven't.

Fascinating!!!.......2003-09-12

Recently, an Austin friend turned me on to a Glover Gill CD called Solo Tango. I liked it a lot and so looked him up on this site to see what else of his I could find. After reading the reviews of this one, I sort of half-heartedly ordered it.
Mistake!!! This is a fascinating piece of work. No, its not warmed-over Piazzolla as some have insinuated. The mere fact that it displays the characteristics of "new tango" doesn't automatically mean that the music will be a Piazzolla clone.
I've listened to and enjoyed lots of tango in my life, from the Guardia Vieja all the way through El Troesma to the present, and I can hear plainly that Glover Gill knows tango. The brooding melancholy jumps out and if you close your eyes, you can imagine being in the arrabal. Guess I'll have to see the movie, too!
Those familiar with tango of the 20s-40s will recognize snippets of some of the most famous tangos expertly worked into Gill's compositions. This is a great CD to kick back to and just enjoy. I've had it on all day soaking up its many pleasures. If I had to chose a favorite piece, Nocturna and Super Sport would vie for that honor.
If you have an open mind about tango and the possibilities of the genre, you should find as much to enjoy here as I do. I look ahead with eager anticipation to the next offering of Glover Gill and his Tosca Tango Orchestra.

Fabulous entertainment in itself.......2003-01-01

This soundtrack is actually quite incredible, an excellent achievement despite what some others say. The music has a distinctive quality that makes it entertainment all on its own; it hardly needs a film to go along with it (although the film was fantastic).

One of my favorite aspects of the music is that it doesn't remind me of certain parts of the film-- I do like being reminded of parts of films in some soundtracks, but this is great.
An exception is track 8, El Cholulo, which brought to my head images of the group of people just tangoeing, and it was actually a good thing to have a familiar image for part of the film. I also love the opening and finishing tracks, which are quite haunting and beautiful.
Simply listening to the samples in the record store, my face broke into an involuntary smile as I listened to it...
Enough said. This is great music. Get it.

The classical heritage .......2006-04-16

The visible embellishment of this noble instrument was enriched still more by the Spanish composers, who following the traces of his contemporaries. In the case of Fernando Sor, Haydn was his musical guide, where as Aguado, could establish himself with major vehemence, due its particular style, based in the notable right-hand articulation, eschewed the classical patterns, being able to print his own music a flamboyant and refined character.

In the particular case of Fernando Sor, we have a wisdom blending of the counterpoint technique, an evocative mood from his own that, added the well known influence of the Italian composers (Domenico Cimarrosa and Giovanni Batista Pergolesi) and his beloved love for the Operatic genre, allowed him to enrich still more the lyrical possibilities of the guitar. Besides, unlike Nicolo Paganini, for instance fortunately did not transform the guitar in a simple device to show his overwhelming gifts. He used the guitar to play music, on the opposite approach of Paganini who used the music as mere device to play his instrument.


In the guitar genre there has not been most deserved and superb tribute to Mozart that this Variations Op. 9 based on a motive of The most famous Mozart ?s Magic Flute. Loaded of such imaginative freshness and enraptured inspiration you may notice that one of the Variations conserves an undeniable Italian flavor; this is one of the most beloved hidden treasures the guitar can offers us, which raise with special charm in the hands of this formidable soloist.

Aguado on the contrary acquired due his personal state of things, a notable adroitness who excelled by far, to Sor, so his musical approaches rode in opposite directions, trying to exploit at maximum levels the technical possibilities of the instrument.


Julian Bream makes a colossal tribute to both composers in this egregious and golden album.

A classic.......2005-06-25

This production is very pleasant. This is a sequel to a previous cd called "recordando una misma senda". In "reconrdando una misma senda" and "recordando otra vez" Marcos Witt makes a compilation of classic Spanish Christian songs. Unlike secular music, many times classic Christian songs are not exposed to new generations. If you appreciate Christian music this is a good album or if you grew up listening this songs at home it will bring back good memories. What is great about Marcos Witt is that with all of his work he strives for excellence. In this cd he takes classic songs and fits them with a more contemporary style, this may be pop ballad, acoustic, or Mexican folk. It is also good to know that Marcos Witt has become an icon for Christian music. He is a man with integrity and someone that I have met in person.

ANOTHER Live Recording? .......2004-08-17

Marcos Witt has been gaining prominence as a strong voice within the Spanish Christian music community. Indeed, in the spanish-speaking world he is probably only rivaled by the much more enchanting Jaci Velasquez. With "Recordando Otra Vez" Witt indeed shows he has a voice and talent, but the results is almost medicore because here he presents nothing fresh or original, simply yet ANOTHER live recording. It's as if Witt has become frightened of recording an original studio album. Reports indicate he is doing a Christmas CD at Abbey Road studios in England, but those are Christmas songs which you can rarely do injustice to, what we're waiting for is original material done in the studio. In fact, sources tell me that radio stations have received studio-produced singles for songs in this album such as "Te Tengo A Ti" and "Ayer, Oye Y Siempre." Marcos Witt is no Dave Matthews and he shouldn't pretend to be, while Matthews (a secular artist but a great one nonetheless) can get away with releasing one studio album and three live ones, you need to understand that the live material is taken from the studio work. Witt ONLY presents his stuff live which is a Pentecostal trend that will surely die out quickly when better artists like Annette Moreno and Rojo release their material first as well-produced, rich studio works. Those complaints aside, some of the material here does indeed work well like the emotional mariachi song "Te Tengo A Ti" which is richly textured and cries out for a studio release as well as the eloquent, stylish "Ayer, Oye Y Siempre," both songs show Witt's impressive vocal range and talent for composition ("Te Tengo A Ti" is a Marcos Witt original as he so egotistically informs us at the beginning of the track). "Recordando Otra Vez" is a descent album, but we wish Witt would literally go into a studio and do it otra vez.

An Awesome Collection!!!.......2004-05-26

I was so excited to get this CD - the only one I had of Marcos Witt's was Dios de Pactos. This one is rapidly becoming my favorite! It is recorded live and that is one of the things I love about it - the excitement and involvement of the crowd! This is a must-get for anyone who enjoys the worship songs of Marcos Witt!!

UNDER RATED.......2005-08-18

This is one under rated CD. I think it should be given much more attention. I love every track on it and haven't gotten tired of listening even after a dozen or more playings. The musical style is very similar to AMARAL or LODVG so that if I played a CD from each of then consecutively, it would keep me in the same mood and frame of mind. I would definitely recommend this artist to anyone interested in the best pop-rock produced these days from Spain. I am looking foreward to her next release and hope it comes very soon.

I bought this shortly before Beth took to the stage for Eurovision 2003 in Riga (only 8th place - we wuz robbed!!) Theres a lot of variety here which is good because she has a unique voice that can do so much - I hope we get more of her soon. If you like this you have to get her DVD, Palau de la Musica Catalana.

I love Beth's voice, and I can say that she sings live good as you can hear on her CD- I was lucky- this summer I was at fiesta in Puerto Alcúdia (Mallorca) and Beth was there. Ever since studying abroad in Spain in 2002, I've been following most everyone's career from OT2. Beth has always been one of my favorites for her professional demeanor on the show to her semi-raspy voice to her unique look. Her first album is representative of who she is, and I like it for that very reason.

If she ever comes to the United States, I'd love to see her show!

Well. I have the CD's and is great, Specially I love the song El destino, and Me refugie en tu Juventud, I will give anything to see rocio sing that song. An historical and magical night to remember!.......2001-11-03

This fabulous double CD captures a magical reunion of Juan Gabriel and Rocio Durcal, a performance from June 24, 1999 at Teatro Degalado de Guadalajara Jalisco. And the ONLY thing BETTER is to see the performance available on VHS. It, too, is just too wonderful!

It's no wonder these two have done so well, and to reunite combining their voices again, for an historic night to remember is magical! Superstar, songwriter Juan Gabriel performs with the beautiful velvety voice of Rocio Durcal. No one can ever sound like Juan Gabriel; it must be that nasal throaty sound that only he projects. His partner again, Rocio Durcal also has an enjoyed a career in movies and in 1977 she recorded 10 compositions written by Juan Gabriel, as he was her influence. So beautiful is their duet hit "El Destino" (The Destiny.) It is a soothing love ballad brilliantly composed by Gabriel.

Enjoy the musical exuberance of "Mariachi Vargas" and "Mariachi de Mi Tierra". I have a taste for a variety of musical styles, but nothing can beat the sounds of mariachi! Listen to mariachi magic in "El Principio" and "Verdadero Amor." Various slower songs are enhanced with that orchestral ambiance to bring dimension to the music. Hear the calming instrumental "El Final". The duets "Juntos" and "Que Bonito Es Santa Fe" are both lively and danceable favorites.

Gabriel and Durcal exude this emotional chemistry when they duet on a love song "Dos Favores". This double CD offers a variety of their solos and duets! But, what is better is the VHS performance, go one step beyond and see the magic. I can't ever get tired of either. .....MzRizz

Great Discovery.......2001-09-04

A couple years ago I saw a phenomenal "Que Bonito es Santa Fe" music video with Juan Gabriel and Rocio Durcal (had never heard of her before seeing the video) and went in search of the song. I nearly didn't buy this CD set because it lists only Gabriel as the singer on "Que Bonito . . ." and I thought it wouldn't be the same as what I had seen. It surely sounds like the Gabriel/Durcal duet of the video, wild and wonderful. The whole double set is good, actually. The first disc has Gabriel and duets; the second Durcal and duets. The king and queen of Mexican music, together again. There's also a complete video out that includes most of the songs from the CD. It too is excellent.

Juan Gabriel and Rocio Durcal have done it again. I started listening to Juan Gabriel since 1986, and when my mother bought the previous 2 tapes (Frente A Frente Vol 1 & 2) I thought I had herd some of the most beautiful songs ever song by a duet. But with this CD, they have surpassed the old ones (don't get me wrong, the old ones are also great but this is is better). If you like Juan Gabriel and Rocio Durcal, don't think twice about getting this CD. Just do it!

Another Masterpiece.......2004-05-28

In this album you can see Jerry's talent with trios, and doing ballads, I can't say that all the tracks were a hit in the radio back when I was in Puerto Rico, but when I bought it, I must say, it is as good as his first 2 CD's. A must buy.

Another of Jerry's Best.......2003-08-19

With the release of Ya No Soy El Nino Aquel, and in 1998 with De Otra Manera, Jerry Rivera reached the peak of his singing career. This is a very fine salsa album, even if not quite as unusal and exhilirating as the former CD. He sings wonderfully and the arrangements, all by top producers, are excellent. It is one of Jerry's longest and most substantial albums, as well.

It is nice that in addition to salsa, there are several forays into ballad type singing. I especially like Hiereme sin Compasion, where Jerry's harmonizing with the other gentlemen singers is extremely beautiful.

Unfortunately, since De Otra Manera, Jerry along with some of the other Puerto Rican superstars (e.g. Manny Manuel and Olga Tanon), have dumbed down their music for apparently commerical reasons, which is a pity.

His best cd yet........1999-10-22

Jerry's new cd is definitely his best yet. There are all different types of music on it--not just his traditional salsa. He does a ballad ("Ese") and two Mexican style songs. My fave song would have to be "De Que Vale Ser Un Rey". Definitely a must-have.

Jerry Rivera's new cd "De Otra Manera" is one of the best cds that Jerry has produced. In my opinion the song "Si Quieres Amar" and "Ese" (in salsa and balada)are the best songs on this album. I fell in love with them when I first listened to them. They are both beautiful songs. Jerry Rivera is a Blazin' Puertorician singer with a great voice. He looks sooooo gooood!!! I love him. I congratulate him for all of his excellent effort and for all those good looks. I hope he will continute to work hard and that god will guide him every step of his career and his life. This CD has beautiful love songs that I never get tired of hearing. Most are up-beat with a peppy tempo that always lifts my sprits. If you are choosing your first Pepe Aguilar CD, you can't go wrong with this one.

I bought the new cd from pepe Agular for my mom[]as a surpise. I gave it to her that night and she was real happy because she loves Pepe Agular. My mom only really thinks that songs 1 and 2 and 10 are the really good songs and the others are okay. I listend to the cd on my house radio and I think the whole thing is wonderful. I love the whole cd. I have known Pepe Agular since 1998 when my mom bought POR MUJERS COMO TU and I really never listed to that cd. But I love this one. Its fanstic and no Pepe Agular fan should be without. In fact I love it so much that I am going to get a copy for myself. Great job pepe!!!. Keep up the good work. 5 stars

Pepe Aguilar, congrats on this new album, surely it is your best work yet. Seems like this man gets better in every recording that he releases. I do not think that htere is anybody out there who can touch this mans voice and style, he truly sings from his heart and soul. Before him, there was none and after him there shall be no more.
