When you hear this music clan -- group just doesn't seem to be the right designation for a band of nomad desert musicians/soldiers -- a listener can hear the calm of the desert night air and the serenity of the musicians who live there. The Taureg people truly seem to be of the land and never more so than here on the band's third album, Aman Iman. The loping percussion and the circular guitar lines conjure wide-open desert images evoked in the repetitive grooves. Some may grumble that the members are playing much as they did on the first and second albums, blending Arabic song structures, desert wails, and primordial blues guitar riffs, but for it to be any different would be akin to asking the people in Tinariwen to change who they are. Never have words been truer than those of the title, but this album also appends that sentiment, proving that music is life for the desert Taureg too. --Tad Hendrickson

Atmospheric? Like a stone on your head........2007-07-04

Finding Tinariwen made me happy. This group does to rhythm what Anoushka Shankar does to the 8 note scale. These are the strongest rhythms I've ever heard. They are something alive, you want to step aside to let it pass, you want to spin it and ultimately you want to dance with it.

This in NO way fits within my definition of atmospheric music. That genre was done to perfection by Eno 15 years ago. No, this music may invoke trances, it may put you on a plane to Timbuktu it may make you inexplicably desire to wrap your entire head in a sheet. It may cause you to dance your wife out of the living room, down the hall and into the bedroom. But it will not let you ignore it.

If you find yourself thinking this is atmospheric music then you're not listening. Consider it rock music. Turn it way up until plaster falls off lathe and then you will hear what you have missed.

A mixture of funky guitar,traditional drums, and an array of upbeat instruments nicely compliments the seriousness and heaviness of the songs lyrics. All songs are translated for you in the "liner notes". Highly recommended.

Great Album!.......2007-05-15

Just like Amassakoul, Aman Iman is some of the best music on the entire planet. A mix of blues and northern African styles that puts you in a trance.

I like the way he touches the guitar. At first I saw Tiraniwen three years ago and was not so impressed, but little by little I got the feeling for this desert rebel. He is wonderful bluesy and still totally based in his Mali culture. What I like very much is that he feels for all Mali tribes and cultures. He is a good example for harmony and peace. I want to visit the Desert Music Festival in Timbouktou in 2008.

Hypnotic and enthralling.......2007-05-12

Tinariwen has often been described as "John Lee Hooker in the Sahara." While that baseline is a decent enough introduction, it's not nearly enough to embrace this band. This album follows Amassakoul, my first Tinariwen CD, and Aman Iman surpasses Amassakoul in every way. Depending on your mood, the music is soothing, hypnotic, challenging and stirring. The variations worked on repetitive figures reward repeated listening. If you haven't heard Tinariwen, Aman Iman is a great place to start.

Hours and hours of delightful music.......2007-07-25

Anyone who enjoys listening to classical music for relaxation in the evening knows how disappointing "classical music" radio stations can be. Sometimes it seems that their post-drivetime playlists are devoted to the ugliest and most avant garde compositions ever to assault the ear -- even (or perhaps especially!) here in New York City. For precisely this reason I recently purchased a 5-CD changer and several of these Philips CD collections of Mozart's works. It is an investment I would heartily recommend to all lovers of good music. What a pleasure it is to put five of these CDs into the changer, push the "Play" button, and enjoy one's evening hours listening to these beautiful divertimenti. If you're looking for quality recordings of Mozart's works at an affordable price, look no further than the Philips Collection. You won't be disappointed here!

very impressive.......2003-12-03

First things first: this album is not a new album that was just released on October 21, 2003, as the amazon page suggests. It is the U.S. release of an album that was recorded four years ago. That being said, it is still a great album. I have not heard any of his other recordings so I am unable to compare it to his other work. However, I am quite familiar with many jazz pianists, both past and present. What I like most about Mr. Dominguez is that he broadens the scope of jazz piano by incorporating flamenco and other forms of traditional spanish music into the traditional american jazz form. In that way, he is doing what the pianist Bheki Mseleku from South Africa, the pianist Manfredo Fest from Brazil, and the pianist Jon Jang from China have all done for jazz piano. They have all elevated and broadened the scope of jazz piano by spicing it with elements of their own cultural traditions. The result is warm and delicious music that is timeless. The only reason that I didn't give it the full 5 stars is because the album is a little bit uneven. A few of the songs didn't move me the way a good jazz song is suppose to. I am sure that he can do better. Perhaps he has already done so on his previous albums.

This CD is a must! It brings a different style to Tejano and Norteno music. I hope IMAN makes it toWashington/Oregon very soon. I recommend this cd to everyone who listens to Latino music. You will not be disappointed. This CD is #1 on my cd collection right now, with Ramon Ayala and Intocable following.

Innocuous Soft Jazz Version of Flamenco.......2000-07-29

If you are looking for pleasant background music, this "soft jazz" take on flamenco will do. It is harmless enough, as long as you don't let it dissuade you from listening to the genuine article.

With the release of his first CD, Manuel has leaped to the highest plateau of Rumba, Flamenco, & Latin guitar playing occupied by the elite such as Strunz & Farah, Armik, Lara & Reyes, and Mark Antoine. He's gone to a different level though by bringing in an electric guitar, as in Zingar, into a genre that rarely, if ever, sees it. Each piece is brilliantly crafted and wonderfully executed. Incredibly captivating! One of the best CD's in this area of music.

A simply wonderful CD. The variety of moods, rhythms, and textures takes you on a wonderful journey. Some of the tracks are *really* different... and so exciting. "Zingar"... "King of Hearts"... and the final combination of "Flowers in the Desert" followed by "Swan Birthday" never fails to set my heart simply soaring. Very highly recommended!

Surprise reissue of the most infamous and difficult to procure Sun Ra artifact; originally issued on Amiri Baraka (then LeRoi Jones)'s Jihad label (home of the original Sunny's Time Now by Sunny Murray as well). This is the first release on the DC-based Son Boy label officially sanctioned by Baraka (and mastered from the original tapes that have been sitting in his basement all along). A strange and revolutionary play by Baraka, with musical interludes by the Myth-Science Orchestra. Very, very historic. This is a sort of radio horror play written by LeRoi Jones (Imamu Amiri Baraka) and based on the Nation of Islam story of the evil angel Yaqub. Ra and the Arkestra provide incidental music. The backing is mostly spare and low-volume, so as not to drown out the players. Actors: Amiri Baraka; Carl Boissiere; David Shakes; Bob Washington; Yusef Iman; Barry Wynn. Women's Chorus: Elaine Jones, Jacqui Bugg, Sylvia Jones.
