Quien Dijo? [Import] o a day of radio. When Jonathan Cain replaced Gregg Rollie on "Escape," Journey took on a romantic bent from Cain's songwriting. "Open Arms" came first, then "Faithfully" (on "Frontiers") solidified it. These were pop radio songs without peer, and they make Journey's "Greatest Hits" an essential document of 70's and 80's radio rock. (The updated version includes the best song from the 90's reunion "Trial by Fire," "When You Love A Woman.")

The other reason you might be looking at this is not because of Steve Perry's voice or Neal Schon's guitar heroics, but because of Tony and Carmella. It was Journey's "Don't Stop Believing" that echoed out of the final minutes of "The Sopranos" closing episode. It was funny that Tony passed over Tony Bennett and Frank Sinatra for Journey and inspire a million parodies in the process. (Including Hilary Clinton...where the best moment is when she and President Bill Clinton are flipping through songs and Bill says "My money's on Smash Mouth...") Talk about cementing your place in pop culture...who could have asked for better?

This best of offers a pair of soundtrack rarities in "Only The Young" (from "Vision Quest") and "Ask The Lonely" (from "Two of a Kind"). Missing are a few crucial singles like "Suzanne," "Stone In Love" and "Walks Like A Lady." If you really want them, go for the box sets or individual CD's.

Not so. The tunes are original and kind of catchy, but frankly the production quality is low. My 10 year old said, "What's wrong with the music?" because it just doesn't have the quality of current recordings. So I would stay away unless you are already a really big fan. From the first time I heard Waterloo, until the fanatic state began with Fernando, they have had my heart like no other group. GOLD is the best essence of ABBA. It has the best of the best sans Summer Night City, which is on the subsequent More Gold. Their only pop rivals in sales were The Bee Gees and the enormously huge pop/disco group Boney M. Relative unknowns in the US. Check them out. Not so much Abba sounding, but if you like good melodies and irresistable hooks, great purchase. Another big, but short-lived pop group was Clout. All of the hits are here [I am just old enough to remember Abba's heyday]. This is a very good, very well-rounded collection of Abba's recordings. There's not a lame song on here. There are just to many really great songs from Elton John's 70's period. Elton John is good. This CD is even better. I was disappointed to learn that he didn't write a lick of his own lyrics (Bernie Taupin did). Elton John just wrote the music. And I guess we need to hear great music before we'll listen to the lyrics of a song. Amazon is currently selling the CD for $15. The good news is that there is $20 worth of great music on it. Though none of their subsequent albums matched the drug-crazed genius of Appetite for Destruction, they did, as the Greatest Hits reminds, have their moments. From the bloated Use Your Illusion I & II came ultimate rock ballads "Don't Cry" and "November Rain," along with the primal rage that was "You Could Be Mine." Sorry guys this album is mediocre at best and you can't cheat yourselves by getting a half hearted compilation go out and get AFD and Use Your Illusions 1 and 2. Okay, but please read!.......2007-06-17 I love GNR. They remain one of my favorite bands. They put so much feeling into their music and lyrics (even those that are about drugs and sex). This was the first GNR CD I bought, and at the time I was in love with them. Years later I was pushed by a friend to buy Appetite for Destruction. I said to him, "I already have their greatest hits." But he replies, "No you don't. Not really." So eventually I bought AFD, and I was blown away. It is one of the greatest albums ever written. It's absolutly astounding. I am shocked to see that this greatest hits collection only had three songs from AFD. I no longer listen to this collection. Songs like Nightrain, Mr. Brownstone, My Michelle, and Rocket Queen weren't included. They certainly are better than some of the Medicore songs on here like Yesterday, Since I don't have you, and Such Fun. How were they hits, they were cover songs that did little to elevate the bands success. Where's It's So Easy, Coma, Estranged, and Garden of Eden. (even their underrated songs just mentioned are better than some songs on this track). If you want GNR's best, buy Appetite for Destruction and Use your Illusion I & II. Guns And Roses - A Decent Compliation.......2007-05-01 Talk about a band that had it all and pretty much threw it all away. Guns And Roses is the classic example of a band that came from nothing, hit the big time quickly, and then flushed it down the drain in a sea of drugs, alcohol, greed and general vice. The fact that they treated their fans like [...] did not help matters either. Showing up hours late at concerts or not showing up at all. Having hissy fits in the middle of shows and walking off the stage. It is really amazing to me these guys have maintained the audience that they have given the way their fans have been treated. This is a band that could have been the biggest hard rock band in the world, but basically blew it. Still, there is no denying that they produced some great rock n roll. The band really only put out 4 studio albums, so most people who are big fans of the band probably already have most of what is on this disc. As a compilation it is a decent collection. Naturally there is a lot of material from "Appetite For Destruction". The two "Use Your Illusion" albums are both well represented as well. My all time favorite G & R tune is probably "November Rain" which is here in all it's symphonic glory. Several covers are also here including Bob Dylan's "Knocking On Heaven's Door", Paul McCartney's "Live And Let Die", and The Rolling Stones "Sympathy For The Devil". It's the jibes I have a hard time with. Then again, true reflection is an arduous task- not for the meek or faint of heart. And you may not read this review-especially if you have a pacemaker. If you think your Metamorpho has money to pay lawsuits - you are sourly mistaken. There are spirits of the dark (bill collectors) after me as we squawk. But, fortunately for you, I reserve the right to purchase more music for your benefit and live in virtual squalor. Who cares if I have to seek shelter in an abandoned high rise apartment building? You benefit- so stop that whining! You all know by now how music works. It seeps into your mind. Then, at a later predestined time, you just have to revisit it. It gets into your blood, or synapses, or, into your need to escape and just have fun. And, music should be a pure joy for you as well as something to delve below the surface for. Sometimes we have to do some work too, but if we didn't, it wouldn't be as rich, or rewarding. This is what the whole thing is about. And I've found that I'm allegic to clown wigs. I'm sure the tabloids will have a field day with that. This album is a testimony for the faithless, an alimony for the penny-less, a contrition for the heartless, and just plain shock treatment for the synapse-less. And, you heard all that first right here from your informative Metamorpho. I listened to this loud and it shakes and kicks the fibers of your soul into some outer-metaphysical place beyond human comprehension. It is rock, for sure, but such a damn near perfect addicting form of it that it's hard to explain- or comprehend, for that matter. Most of the subject matter centers around relationships - which are nothing new in the rock arena. But, it's what Petty and his fine band of musicians have done with it. They've molded it into generous hooks and alluring melodies that extend beyond the reach of the beautiful and cutesy. This is rough and hard rockin', make no mistake. Petty has never sounded more impassioned than on most of these songs. Listen to his vocals on "The Waiting". Pleading and insistent. But, with his Dylanesque and McGuinnesque influences, he's molded and found his own, unique voice. And swagger. Listen to his warning on "You Got Lucky" and his urgent, gutteral plea on "Refugee". Petty is giving us buckets of his emotions into these songs. The greatness lies in him, and a superbly competent band that knows exactly what to do - time and time again. They are true treasures of rock. It gets my aged Seer's blood flowing once again. Something I haven't felt since the dragon got loose in my castle. It was a good thing I had garlic at my disposal. Most of these songs are so well written that it makes your favorite Seer's Seer hat do somersaults. It is so incredulous. Everything has a place and a place for everything. No grandstanding here. The band flows - effortlessly - giving us true gems at every turn. I must admit, I have a certain affection for "Don't Come Around Here No More". The same haberdasher made my Seer's hat as well. But I am not mad.Even if my guides debate that point. So, the end of this petty tale is that this is certainly a very fine representation of a true, American rocker. Succinct,sonorous,satisfying. Tom Petty has rocked since this offering, but, I feel, never as hard and spectacular as he does here. But he is mega in rock music. I won't back down ---your numbing but happy -Metamorpho Good one-disc compilation.......2007-03-25 This is the best single-disc compilation of Tom Petty that you can find. It's got all of the hits and no filler. Of course, there are more comprehensive compilations out there, but this does well for a single disc. It is definately a very good overview of Tom Petty and the great artist he is. The sound is also very good. I would definately recommend it.
