Argentine Tango-European Style.......2003-04-17

After perusing the songlist, I bought this CD thinking it was a Piazzolla CD I had not heard because it is listed under Piazzolla and no other information is supplied about it. When I received it, I felt annoyance that the CD was not Piazzolla but merely contained some Piazzolla compositions interpreted by others.
No matter, El Tango En Mis Recuerdos is an excellent CD for either listening or dancing. There are no virtuoso performances here, just some smooth, solid, steady interpretations of popular tangos ranging from the days of the Guardia Vieja all the way up to Piazzolla. Alberto Negri-Divorne and his quintet offer a full hour of enjoyment to the tango enthusiast.
I've been playing this in my office for several days now. Particularly enjoyable are Negri-Divorne's renditions of 9 de Julio, Imperial, Sur, A Media Luz, and Lo Que Vendra.
I had not heard of this quintet before, but like its European styling of tango classics and certainly look forward to future releases. If you are looking for tango with a little bit different sound, then give this CD a shot. You won't be disappointed.

A Magical Musical Journey Around the World with Mantovani........2005-02-23

The soaring strings of the original orchestra led by the late great Mantovani are once again presented in this brand new Vocalion release of two of the maestro's masterpiece recordings first released in 1964 (Folk Songs) and 1968 (Tango). Folk Songs from Around the World will charm and excite listeners with melodies as diverse as Aura Lee (what Elvis sang as Love Me Tender) and the sizzling sounds of Hava Nagila. The highly disciplined orchestra under the baton of Mantovani perform spectacular arrangements of "Two Guitars" from Russia and folk songs from Japan, Europe,and the British Isles arranged with such artistry that they will readily evoke from each listener intense emotions. The splendid orchestrations found on the Tango tracks also evoke a variety of emotions, with Whatever Lola Wants, Hernando's Hideaway and Takes Two to Tango, offering playful amusement, and such tracks as Blue Sky, Orange Vendor, and Tango Delle Rose combining captivating tango rhythms with time honored melodies made ever more delightful by the unique, cathedral sound identified exclusively with Mantovani. In an interview at the time of the Tango album's release, the ever perfectionist Mantovani expressed his delight with the musical outcome,noting that he tried "blending fine melodies with exciting rhythms to produce a sound that is stimulating.." Tango's for gringos.......2003-04-20

If you like Argentine style tango you won't like this cd, but if you are like me and like tango played romanticly, and with lush stringed arraingements, instead of the harsh icy sound of the argentine way, then you will love this recording, I only wish that the original albums from which this cd was compiled were available in their entirety.

Big disappointment for Tango fans.......2001-04-24

I purchased this CD with great expectations which were completely dashed. I have always wished that Placido Domingo would record a CD of Argentine tango, since he has the voice and sense of drama to do justice to the art of tango. So when I saw this CD, I thought, "Wow!"

However, this CD is a crime commited against tango. The arrangements are not traditional Argentine tango, but the most saccharine gringo tango. I wish that Domingo had recorded with a real tango orchestra like Color Tango or the orchestra from Forever Tango.

Furthermore, this CD recycles music from the soundtrack to the Carlos Saura movie Tango. You might as well get that CD instead of this one for the few tracks worth listening to.
