Amazon.com essential recording

With a temperamental personality and crystalline voice, Elis Regina became a beloved national symbol of Brazil in the early 1960s when she was 21 years old. She sang with the clarity of glass in a naturally risqué tone that spilled forth with little effort, a reposed style shared by Astrud Gilberto. Though she sang much music unrelated to the bossa nova, her best-known albums include the legendary collaboration with Antonio Carlos Jobim, Elis & Tom, as well as this collection in the Personalidade series. Oozing with samba rhythms and bossa nova sensuality, Elis takes listeners to the lounges of Brazil with such classics as "Aguas de Marco" and "Triste." Regina is intimately romantic and charismatically mysterious, and early into the album it's easy to see how an entire country could fall in love with her. She even escaped the political exile suffered by other artists during Brazil's rigid military rule in the 1960s. Tragically, though, the singer died from a cocaine overdose in 1982. This compilation serves as a lovely remembrance of the magnetic singer who set Brazilian hearts on fire. --Karen K. Hugg

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful, Sizzling Elis Regina Performances........2004-08-05

Five Stars!! The legendary Elis Regina is a Brazilian National and World Music Treasure over 20 years after her accidental death and this CD tells you why!! There was simply no other to whom she could be compared. She's an idiom unto herself, instantly recognizable, and one who always demands our complete attention.

This CD is simply wonderful and loaded with 'Pieces D'Resistance'. From the joyful "Voce" (taken from the amazing CD "Aquarela do Brasil" with Toots Thielemans in 1969); to the definitive "Madalena", complete with strings and 'whistlers'; to Milton's "Nada Sera Como Antes", chalk up yet another Five Star winner. And don't miss her outstanding performances of Jobim staples "Triste" (from "Elis & Tom") and the sizzling version of "Aguas De Marco" is without Jobim. "Mucuripe" is amazingly beautiful, as is the show stopper "Como Nos Pais" (Like Our Parents).

"Atras Da Porta" (Behind the Door) is the mesmerizing original version, where Elis hums the unwritten Chico Buarque final verse from the unfinished manuscript. It's hauntingly beautiful and Elis infuses it with so much overpowering emotion. Small wonder it sets the standard for all of the following attempts by other singers who do sing a final verse.

Two more gems are the breezy "Me Deixa Em Paz" (~I'm Left At Peace), tightly arranged and deftly performed faster than the version on Milton's "Clube da Esquina" CD, and the awesome, crystalline beauty of "Dois Pra La, Dois Pra Ca" with Elis obviously enjoying and joining the wonderful background vocal group. This is Elis at her wonderful best and each song is a winner.

Ella Fitzgerald, a music legend herself, liked Elis' artistry. And Elis' awesomely talented singing daughter, Maria Rita, is influenced mainly by Ella: and so the artistic wheel goes 'round and 'round. If you love Elis and Ella, you'll love the triple Grammy winning CD "Maria Rita".

BTW, "Romaria" and the uptempo "Vou Deitar E Rolar", with the familiar "Quaquaraquaqua" verse, are bonus songs, not found on the original Philips vinyl LP. This CD also overlaps alot with the import "Perfil". Buy and enjoy this wonderful recollection. Five Stars!

4 out of 5 stars The soft side of Brazilian spice- leaves the heart dancing!.......1999-07-08

This is the perfect CD for those who enjoy the softer bossa nova side of Brazilian music. This easy- listening adventure embraces the heart of the listener with jazzy overtones, whimsical gimmicks and bittersweet poignancy all from the magical voice of Elis Regina. One need not understand Portuguese to enjoy this music as it weaves itself around the listener. This is the cheapest vacation you will ever get to Brazil - with your tour guide leading you through clever musical passages with her voice. You will feel the pride, the gaiety, the passion and disappontment of lifes little turns in classic songs written by the "best of the best" Latin songwriters. There are few voices more beloved in the world of Brazilian music than Elis Regina. The clarity and emotion her voice delivers is unsurpassed and contagious. This CD transports you to a beach in Rio, where life shows its beauty, sensuality, sadness and vitality. This is what Brazil is really like! Not to be missed by those who like to dust off their souls with a little spice and spontaneity!

5 out of 5 stars Muy Triste (Very Sad).......2006-10-25

Oh, I love this CD...that is why I kick myself everytime I think about how I lent it out, "Oh, don't worry dude, I just wanna burn a copy and then I'll give it right back. Honest. I swear..."

Well, I don't even have to tell you what happened, do I? I haven't seen that person or that CD in months, but I remember when I did have this CD, it was like Love at First Listen and that is unusual for a CD to take that strong of a hold on me on the first take. Usually I listen to an album three or four times and I "swirl" each song in my head and decide whether or not I like it, but with this one, I was able to unwrap the CD, put it in the stereo, sit back, and melt. I've never heard such gorgeous music in my whole life.

I don't know what genre this is classified as. Latin? Jazz? Latin Jazz? I really can't nor do I want to "peg" this recording. It almost seems kind of unfair to brand it and put it into a category. Let's just say that if you did manage to listen to all the samples without taking out your credit card and giving amazon your information, you're a pretty strong individual because I knew even before I had the CD in my hands that I had to have it.

And now it's gone and now I'm sad, but like with former lovers, sometimes the parting is just bittersweet. Yeah, I know I'm being melodramatic, but hey, this is my drama, okay?

Geesh.

So if you're reading this Mr. Sticky Fingers, and you know who you are, I hope you know that you brought a 6'1", 205lb man to tears. Just leave it on my doorstep and I won't ask any questions....

Sigh...

I'm gonna have to buy this again, huh?

Oh, well....

Peace & Blessings.

Peace

5 out of 5 stars Magnificent.......2004-11-05

Baden Powell was a genius, a magician, a wizard . . . the shaman of the acoustic guitar. This is not "classical guitar" playing. No matter how many "classical guitarists" you have heard, you have no idea how much passion can be conveyed through this instrument unless you have listened to Baden Powell. Only Roland Dyens among living guitarists comes close. It is my personal theory that Dyens was inspired by Powell, who was living and touring in France and Germany while Dyens was a teenager. I have over 5,000 recordings of all kinds of music. If I had to save 5 or 6 cd's from a fire, Baden Powell's "Personalidade" and "Seresta Brasileira" would be among them. It brings tears to my eyes just thinking about this music. The first 3 tracks here, "Viagem", "Das Rosas" (by Dori Caymmi), and the awe-inspiring "Apelo" I listen to almost every day. No musician I have ever heard communicates from the heart like Baden Powell . . . love, passion, longing, nostalgia, romance, heartbreak, fragile beauty. I thank God that he played guitar, the instrument of poetry. Perhaps Baden came to us from the planet "Guitar", to which he has now returned to play eternal duets with fellow native Joe Pass. In heaven, if I make it, I will spend my evenings sitting next to Jobim and listening to Baden, Joe and Roland, who undoubtedly will have shown up at the gig by then, improvising on "Round Midnight" and "Manha de Carnaval".

5 out of 5 stars Baden Powell is splendid.......2001-07-30

Baden Powell was probably the most important and brilliant brazilian guitarrist ever. He's absolutely original, passionate, intense, aggressive yet sweet and melancolic some times. He was one of the most renowned and influential guitarrists in the world during the 70's, while he was living in Europe, most of time in Germany and France. However, for some strange reason, after he came back to Brazil in the 80's, his name started loosing fame and prestige. This CD has a very interesting selection of some of his most important songs. Some tracks are especially important: "Lenda do Abaete" shows one of his most amazing guitar techniques: Baden had a special and unique kind of rasgueado (very different from Spanish Flamenco, though) and he was able to play melodies that way, resulting in a very vigorous and unbelievable playing. "Viagem", by its turn, shows a very romantic and sweet Baden Powell playing with an orchestra. "Samba Triste" is absolutely incredible in terms of harmony and beauty. Baden has released over 35 discs from 1963 through 2001, when we lost him. Don't miss this CD, as well as "The Frankfurt Opera Concert" (absolutely amazing), "Os Afro-Sambas", "Brazil Guitar Magic" (compilation with Laurindo Almeida) and "Suite Afro-Consolacao".

5 out of 5 stars Beyond human comprehension!!!.......1999-05-01

If you have ears, you must buy this record! It is an incredible, topographal overview of a little-known genius' work over 40 years. Let me preface, by first saying, there are no words, I repeat, nothing you can say, to communicate what goes on in this man, that is *precisely* why what comes out of him through that guitar will open a whole new world to you. I am a new Powell fan after hearing the incredible percussionist, Cyro Baptista praise him on a PBS World Music Special in the fall of 1998. Cyro said Baden gave the fast samba, and the complex playing style, definition, and there is much more to him than samba rythym. The things I heard in a 15 second clip of a 60's concert eminating from Powell, concerned me enough that there were things in music, so far beyond normal composition, above the shelf of everyday music, and so overlooked by the world in general, I had to buy it. The insane chords, rythyms, layerings, counterparts within his 3 piece! How could the world, especially musicians, for so long have ignored this mad-man?!?!? He can take a beautiful, airy, classical quote, say a Debussy-ish line, imply a tight pocketted samba rythym that may or may not actually exist or be audible, and make you cry and at the same time, be lost in a state of awe and wonder, probably much like the first time you took breath. I say it again, there are no words to describe the feelings that come from his brain through his fingers, out of that guitar. I cannot plead to you enough, if you take interest in music at all, regardless of the age, flavor or your attitude, you must listen to this man's work and use it to expand your own. Amazon is the first resource at all, for Baden that I have found, other than fan web site's listing LPs out of print. I have looked for 7 month's in major music stores, only to find this album, and one or two others. I have called major music catalogs, they haven't even heard of him. Amazon has easily over 15 recordings of this mystery man. For the very reason you loved music in the first place, check this man out.

5 out of 5 stars Perfection.......1998-11-26

Mission: impossible. To put together the best of Baden Powell we would probably need the largest/longest CD ever. Dweller of the girl from Ipanema days, Baden joined the bossa-nova headquarters in its early years. A virtuose of the guitar, jazz, pop and afro-sambas with Tom Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes, repeated successful tours around Europe and USA, a forty years old musical career and a strong devotion to perfection lifts him up to the top level of cool. The album is definitly a must listen and the guys putting that compilation together were extremely fortunate.

Caetano Veloso has been a force in Brazilian pop music since the '60s, a singer-songwriter who combines gentle sonorities and pointed political messages with Bahia roots and light pop textures. Along with Gilberto Gil and Gal Costa, Veloso fueled the tropicalia movement that resulted, for a time, in exile to London, where he began to reach an international audience and provided a spark to the World Music movement. This 1987 compilation touches on many of Veloso's moods, from the delicately wistful "Chuvas de Verao" to the cynical "Sampa" and the frothy animation of Gilberto Gil's "Soy Loco por Ti, America." His performance of Antonio Carlos Jobim's "Eu Sei Que Vou Te Amar" seems to restore the bossa nova to its folk roots, while "Podres Poderes" propels its message with an odd mix of off beats and distorted guitar. --Stuart Broomer

Caetano's voice is so warm his mouth would melt butter. You don't have to know Portuguese to understand the words, feel the sensuality or experience the joy. A mysteriously melodius whistle in "O Leaozinho" echos back to my childhood when happiness was not complicated.

This collection of classic bossa nova spotlights the partnership of Brazilian poet and lyricist Vinícius de Moraes with guitarist Toquinho. Full of rich, warm bossa nova, this CD spans the classic bossa nova complete with female backup singers, softened production, and organ. The flute floats luxuriously in and out of these tunes, transporting one to the beaches of Rio while the steady, Bahian-rooted samba rhythms pulse throughout. There's no great voice like João Gilberto here, but plenty of sensual, seductive bossa nova by two key innovators of the movement. --Karen K. Hugg

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Vinicius would be turning in his grave..........2001-04-13

if he heard you saying his music wasn't Samba! There are many different kinds of Samba you can hear and believe it or not this is one of them! Bossa Nova itself is considered to be a kind of Samba, called "Samba Cancao." This was actually the term Joao Gilberto preferred, who originally disapproved of the "Bossa" label that was attatched to him.

I have to admit that I didn't particularly like this compilation at first (thought it was sort of boring to be honest), and though it has really grown on me, I still find it to be sort of strange in that it seems only to cover th period in the mid-70s, and neglects all the best stuff from their earlier period, when Vinicius and Toquinho were playing with Maria Creuza and Marilia Medalha. In fact, many of the songs are later, alternate versions of songs recorded earlier such as "Como Dizia O Poeta," "Samba de Bencao," "Maria Vai com as Outras," etc... and are incorporated into these medlies which they refer to as "Pot-Pourris." These versions are still good, but they are not the best versions in my opinion. The older versions with the aforementioned Maria Creuza and Marilia Medalha are not available in the US, but you might be able to get some of the songs on other Vinicius and Toquinho compilations like the "Best of Brazil" series that I've seen in some stores here.

The other strike against this album is that it is omitting a crucial song which was recorded during the time this compilation covers, "Carta Ao Tom 1974."

That said, Vinicius and Toquinho are absolutely on my top-tier of favorite musicians, so their second-rate material still beats most people's best. If you know where to look, you can find tons of albums with one or both of them joining up with Quarteto em Cy, Maria Bethania, Jorge Ben, Odette Lara, and probably many other wonderful Brazilian artists.

Also check out the album they made with Ornella Vanoni in Italian. Aside from the language part (and there's nothing wrong with Italian believe me!), that's pretty much what the rest of their early material sounds like.

2 out of 5 stars Snore, Snore.......2000-01-13

Sorry, this may hit the right spot for some, for me it was snoozeville. Brazil has so much good music, this is not on that list. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone. Keep looking, better yet, always listen to the samples first. I'm just sorry I didn't before I bought. Anyone want to trade, I will take any offers.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......1999-04-08

This is great music, from the beginning to the end. Absolutely classic material. A must!!

5 out of 5 stars The celebration of a sucessful partnership.......1998-11-15

One of the most influential artist of his time in Brazil, Vinicius de Moraes has his sucessful partnership with guitar virtuoso Toquinho explored in this CD. Tough some of the songs are called sambas, they aren't sambas in the sense of a carnival samba. They are bossa nova, a sofisticated jazzy style that incorporates most of the brazilian samba origins. The result is a unique rythym, beautiful, soulful and very rich. All songs are beautiful, but two of them deserve special attention. "Tarde em Itapoã" is a classic that celebrates a lazy, pleasant and passionate stay in Bahia. "Aquarela" is a melodic song, vistuosly played by Toquinho, with rich metaphorical lyrics that seem to have been crafted for children, but at the same time amaze adults for its way of dealing with thems like life, death and the future. Absolutely brilliant.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent sample of contemporary Brazilian music!.......1998-08-24

This is not samba! This is a wonderful mix of different sounds from Brasil! I highly recommend Toquihno! Tracks 10 & 11: Escravo da Alegria & Aquarela are my favorites, but the rest are very good too.
