4 out of 5 stars Great album!.......2006-01-18

Jerry picks up right where he left off with "Cuenta Conmigo." From beginning to end, this album is pure joy!

5 out of 5 stars After 10 years, still his best album.......2003-08-13

Along with Ya No Soy El Nino Aquel and De Otra Manera, Cara de Nino is one of Jerry Rivera's best albums and it has stood the test of time, ranking among the best salsa CDs of the 90s.

Solo Tu starts out very unconventionally, with dark mysterious strings, but soon the darkness is piereced by hot percussion, and then Jerry's angelic voice singing the beautiful melody. This song qualifies as a true salsa classic.

Most of the other songs are very good as well. Wonderful innovative arrangments by the best in the business make this album shine above the others. The sound and feel of this album is unique and coherent through its entirety.

Jerry's more recent albums, consisting of bland pop, and a rather unexciting remake of Frankie Ruiz songs, pale greatly by comparison.

5 out of 5 stars Still a strong salsa album........2003-07-07

This is album is one of his best from the beginning years of his career as a salsa artist. Jerry Rivera who is renowned for is unique style called salsa romantica takes his talent to the limit and showcases a timeless album that can be easily deemed by any salsa connoisseur as one of the classic salsa albums produced in the 90s. I have gone several years without listening to this album and having listened to it again recently I was inspired to write this review. This salsa is upbeat, rhythmic, danceable and truly representative of Jerry Rivera. It really sounds great especially since Jerry has changed genres since 2001 and is now producing ballads primarily. If you want to stroll down memory lane or simply listen to authentic salsa of this genre, strongly consider purchasing this album. I assure you will enjoy every inch of it!

5 out of 5 stars The Perfect Salsa.......2000-10-03

I am not a big fan of salsa music... I get into tejano, mostly, when it comes to music in spanish. But every single detail of this CD just rocks. You can't listen to this CD and not feel a need to dance. I can't name a favorite song- they're all great. The arrangements are stunning, I especially love the horns, they really bring an electricity to the whole thing. And of course, who could fail to appreciate the great voice that Jerry Rivera possesses? The lyrics are meaningful and interesting, and that voice brings the meaning right to you. My mother speaks not a word of spanish, but this is still one of her favorite CDs, for all these reasons and more. It just doesn't get any better than this.

5 out of 5 stars This album delivers!!!.......2000-08-20

I am mark for all of Jerry's albums and songs. So you know my reviews for him are all going to be good. This album certainly delivers a great sound that only Jerry has in Salsa music. His voice and the music are just hitting. I've always said, "There isn't any one better than Jerry in Salsa." The songs most notable on here to me are, "Cara de Nino," since I can relate to that seeing as how woman may feel that younger men are inferior to them just because of age, but honey if you could see my soul and everything else I've gone through you would see the soul of a man that has suffered, cried, and experience pain. Like the song says, "No me juzguez por mi cara, reconoce bien mi alma!" Don't judge me by my babyface, recognize well my soul! "No Hieras mas Mi Vida" is also one of the best songs on the album. But "En Las Nubes" is probably my favorite song on the album. I really can't say though which song really is my favorite song because from beginning to end this album, POINT BLANK delivers! You just need to get it!

4 out of 5 stars Great dinner music!.......2006-08-31

I enjoy using this CD when hosting Italian dinner parties. My guests almost always remark how they enjoy this music. I think it's great listening music too. I've bought other Italian music CDs and have been disappointed because they seem to classical. This music has charm and pizzaz.

4 out of 5 stars Relaxing and Beautiful.......2006-04-19

This CD is an absolute joy to listen to. It is relaxing and a beautiful choice of songs. I love it from beginning to end.

1 out of 5 stars Boring.......2004-08-21

The problem with this CD is that every measure receives equal emphasis. The musical director appears to have no concept of strong and weak measures, or of other ways to shape the phrases beautifully. The result is a concert of beautiful old favorites that puts the listener to sleep.

4 out of 5 stars Very good CD for the price.......2000-08-14

I have just listened to the whole CD and except for three tracks I think Pippo's singing is excellent. We have to listen to this CD for what it really is.A re-recording of live performances dating back almost 50 years. We can't expect today's digital quality recordings sound. On the first track,we hear Che Gelida Manina from a 31 year old Pippo who obviously was having a bad night, which is not uncommon with most singers.Tracks 18 & 19 definitely show Pippo in decline, but I didn't find band 18 as bad as another reviewer did.I counted only two vocal flaws. The rest of the aria is sung not that bad for a declining Pippo.Track 19 is sung well, but as in track 18 the voice sounds like it's getting tired. The rest of the singing on the CD,I enjoyed, especially the Addio Alla Madre.I would say that is my favorite on the CD.In my opinion,it's an ecellent CD for the price and it does contain some excellent singing and also is of historical value.

Pippo's Biggest Fan.

4 out of 5 stars A musical history.......1999-12-12

I purchased this recording when it first became available. It is an important for as a historical document on one of the greatest tenors in the history of opera. Yes, his voice has a very apparent decline. And yes track 18 (Una furitiva lagrima) has cracked notes and other obvious vocal flaws. What the other reviewer has missed (but the audience didn't - which is why the aria was greeted with such enthusiasm) was the passion, the emotion that Di Stefano put into his singing. I make no excuses, I am an ardent Di Stefano devotee. His early singing was glorious, pure beauty. His later singing lost it's pure beauty, but gained passion and emotion.

This disc is important because it traces this transition.

3 out of 5 stars Only for die-hard Di Stefano fans.......1999-03-24

I picked up this CD on a whim. The liner notes are useful, and describe the meteoric rise and fall of DiStefano's career, his temperment and ego.

The CD covers a period of only 11 years, but the deterioration of his voice during that period is frightening. Track 1 (1962) 'Che Gelida Manina' showcases a much fresher voice, but he strains terribly for the high 'C' and never even gets close. Track 18 (1963) 'Una furtiva lagrima' is full of embarrassments- chokes, flat notes, etc. - yet the live audience eats it up.

Di Stefano had stopped singing by the time I became an opera fan. This disk clearly shows why. Being a famous operatic tenor is not always about vocal quality (James McCracken, anyone?), and Di Stefano was certainly an exciting siger. There is some beautiful music on this CD, but I find it to be of mostly historical interest.

4 out of 5 stars An entertaining, live "Straw Hat".......2007-01-20

SOURCE: Live performance at the Petite Salle in Brussels, March 6, 1976.

SOUND: Details are not provided by the publisher, but this seems to be a true pirate recording. It was clearly recorded from the audience, as demonstrated by the close proximity of a horny-handed, bravo-shouting enthusiast (who, thank heaven, manages to restrain himself until the appropriate moments.) The orchestra is front and center, while the performers are noticeably distant and sometimes overwhelmed by the sounds emerging from the pit. All that notwithstanding, the mono sound isn't all that bad. It is certainly better than many of Callas' live recordings or almost anything emerging from the Salzburg Festival in the 1950s.

CAST: Fadinard, a young, would-be bridegroom - Edoardo Gimenez; Nonancourt, Fadinard's short-tempered father-in-law to be - Gianni Socci; Elena, Fadinard's bride-to-be - Marielle Devia; Anaide, a lady who takes off her hat at intimate moments - Dolores Crivellari; Emilio, Anaide's lover - Manuel Gonzales; Beaupertuis, Anaide's jealous, well-armed husband - Federico Davia; The Baroness of Champigny, a lady with very definite ideas about violinists - Magda Olivero; Uncle Vezet - Augusto Pedroni; The Milliner - Katerina Moesen; Corporal of the Guard/The Viscount of Rosalba - Harmut Schmieder; A Guard/ Fadinard's servant - Jean-Jacques Schreurs. CONDUCTOR: Elio Boncompagni with the Orchestra of Theatre Royal de la Monnaie.

COMPOSER: Nino Rota (1911-1979) was a member of a musical family. His mother was his first music teacher. Toscanini was a family friend and advisor. He was formally trained in both Italy and the United States. In Philadelphia he took classes in the orchestra from Fritz Reiner. Rota is, of course, best known for his film scores but he composed ten operas, five ballets and numerous orchestral pieces.

THE OPERA: "Il cappello di paglia di Firenze" (The Florentine Straw Hat) is based on a famous 1851 farce by Eugene Labiche and Marc Michel called "Un chapeau de paille d'Italie." The great French film director Rene Clair used the story in 1927 for one of the best of the French silent film comedies "An Italian Straw Hat." In 1944, Nino Rota and his mother Ernesta wrote the libretto for "il cappello." Rota worked on the score for a year or more but put it aside unfinished, with no prospect of a performance. In the mid-1950s, at the prompting of a friend who had heard parts of the score, Rota finished the piece and saw it premiered in Palermo in April 1955 with Jonel Perlea conducting.

STORY: "Il cappello" is a farce about misunderstandings. Fadinard begins his wedding day by driving his carriage across Paris to check on the state of his new apartment. While passing through a wooded area, his whip gets entangled. He stops the carriage to retrieve the whip. His horse uses the pause as an opportunity to snack on an attractive straw hat conveniently hanging from a tree. Fadinard returns to be confronted by an indignant and very much married lady and her lover who is very much not her husband. The lady had removed the hat during an intimate moment with her lover. She cannot return to her suspicious husband without her hat. Fadinard, she and her lover insist, must provide a replacement and they will not listen to any trifling quibbles from him about his forthcoming wedding. Produce the hat, they say, or face a duel. The plot is now wound up like a top and ready to go spinning away. The wedding guests approach as Fadinard rushes off to find a replacement hat. Along the way he blunders into many misunderstandings, including one in which he is taken to be a virtuoso violinist, all to the growing annoyance of his prospective father-in-law.

COMMENTARY: "Il cappello" is pretty much what one might expect from a mid-Twentieth Century Italian composer who was a close friend of Stravinsky but who did not buy into either the atonality of that century's music or its icy indifference to the human condition. For a hint of the sound of the opera and the approach it takes, consider the first scene of Puccini's "La Boheme," before the entry of Mimi and the lush melodies she brings in her wake. Extend that over the whole length of the opera and you have something very like "Il cappello."

Although she is in a supporting role, the star of this performance is the great Magda Olivero, still in first youth at a mere 64 years of age. That lady was, and is, everything that an opera star ought to be. The very fine Marielle Devia, impresses as always, even in the too-small part of Elena. Edoardo Gimenez was, I think, one of those performers who is a delight to see, but one, alas, not blessed with a beautiful voice. On CD, he offers a workmanlike job. The rest of the cast is competent. The conducting and orchestra seem perfectly satisfactory in this not very heavily orchestrated work.

I was drawn to this "Il cappello" by the negative Amazon reviews. Frankly, I wondered how any performance that boasted of both Olivero and Devia could possibly rate a single star. To tell the truth, I am still puzzled by Mr. Dowling's obviously honest and heartfelt disdain. For the moment, I can only assume that my reaction is so different from his because I have heard more truly lousy Twentieth Century operas than he has. The second reviewer, Armindo, always perceptive and an excellent guide, has written a solid and nicely balanced review, but it seems to me to be more like three-star piece, despite single star he actually awarded.

I give "Il cappella di paglia di Firenze" full marks for being that rarest of commodities, an entertaining Twentieth Century opera--less one star for the lack of a libretto and the so-so sound. Four stars.

1 out of 5 stars The benefit of the doubt.......2006-12-28

Anyone thinking of investing in this recording must come prepared otherwise they'll be very dissapointed like the previous reviewer. It's very far from the operatic masterpieces of Verdi, Bellini etc. but I don't think Rota wanted it to sound like them anyway. I'm not saying I enjoyed it because without libretto (or at least score), this recording is useless to the casual opera collector who doesn't speak Italian fluently.

However, the first reason I would give it another chance if it ever happened to be played in theatre near me is that the audience seems to be enjoying what's happening on stage, I hear a lot of laughters particularly when the baritones and basses get on stage. And I've often liked an opera so much more in theatre than on records so I'll give it the benefit of the doubt. Secondly, it's Rota's most popular opera and it's been staged a number of times, most notably at La Scala in a 1998 production with Juan Diego Florez.

The cast here features verisimo specialist Magda Olivero, promising young Mariella Devia in the soubrette role of Elena, Edoardo Gimenez in your usual mighty-mouse comic tenor role of Fadinard and an impressive Federico Davia among others. There isn't much for them to sing in terms of arias so be prepared for lots of chatting. For a more musical Rota opera, you might want to try Napoli Milionaria. Otherwise wait for a theatre production or simply play some Bellini...

5 out of 5 stars Scotto and Carreras fans--what you see is what you get.......2006-01-15

With all due respect to the previous reviewer, it appears that he has missed the point.

By about a mile.

The title of this set is not "Highlights from 'I Lombardi alla prima Crociata' conducted by Eve Queler" nor even "A Rational Selection of Verdian Gems." No, this is "Renata Scotto & José Carreras Sing Giuseppe Verdi." And that is exactly what you get.

What we have here is an extensive set of bleeding hunks of various live (and presumably pirated) performances of Verdi operas in which Scotto and Carreras appeared--not necessarily together--which Gala happened to have on hand. Admittedly, devoting 17 out of a total of 44 tracks to "I Lombardi" and its French incarnation, "Jérusalem," seems a tad excessive, but it's all good stuff.

Really.

If I were trolling for a generous serving of Scotto and Carreras warbling their hearts out in live Verdi performances, this would be the very thing. My concern would be for the singers, not the assorted conductors or even the sound quality--within limits. That being the case, I think that this recording is worth five stars for anyone seeking what it offers.

3 out of 5 stars A fine attempt, but not the best available.......2002-01-04

I purchased this recording a number of years ago, before the more recent Metropolitan/Levine/Pavarotti/Anderson recording was available. Although Carreras and Scotto are fine here, the real downfall of this recording is the conducting by Eve Queler. Although Ms. Queler deserves plaudits for bringing many overlooked operas to the concert stage via her Opera Orchestra of New York, she has never developed the ability to draw out inspired playing from instrumentalists under her baton and her tempos are sometimes odd. Please spend the extra dollars and by the much better Levine-conducted recording.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Die Schönste Madrigale.......2005-02-07

I have been enjoying these madrigals since they first came out on LPs in 1980--it's a wonderful collection of madrigals from England, the Netherlands, Germany, France, Spain and Italy. The Cologne Collegium Vocale, an ensemble of excellent, well-matched voices, sing "as one" and never lose the pitch, so that all parts are easy to follow.

Hoping this set of CDs will be back in stock soon--after all these years, my set of LPs is pretty worn!
