2 out of 5 stars let's call this one Bossa Lite.......2001-03-19

For some reason this one sounded better at the listening station in the store and failed to deliver once I got it home--go figure. Tropicale doesn't have the dance groove that previous bossa brava compilations had. In fact, this one tries to be a lot cooler--like lounge music but doesn't quit cut it for me. Besides the cuts "Never Before" and "Orbit Lounge" I really can't tell the difference between these. Perhaps it'll grow on me--let's hope.

In the liner notes for some violin recital discs, we can read about the vintage of the instrument being played. On Linda Brava's debut disc for EMI, we get to read about some of the violinist's turn-ons: skiing, scuba diving, acting, and car racing. A true Renaissance woman, she has graced the pages of Playboy and appeared on TV's Baywatch, and she owns an apple cider company (which, we're told, is a top-seller in her native Finland). She also plays the violin. Sadly, her performance isn't nearly as spotless as her complexion. Joined by pianist John Lenehan, Brava performs a mixed bag of compositions--short pieces from Elgar, Fauré, Paganini, and Sibelius, to name a few. The trait these performances share is that they're played uncommonly slowly and unremarkably. She performs a passable version of Fauré's Berceuse pour violin, but on Sibelius's Rondino she sounds absolutely stiff and erratic; Ave Maria highlights Brava's poor intonation. It's a good thing she has so many other assets to fall back upon. --Jason Verlinde

4 out of 5 stars Not just another pretty face.......2006-11-14

The assumption that no one who looks like this can actually play the violin is a seemingly sound one, but is, in this case, very unfair. I found her technique excellent and I enjoyed the selections very much. I note that Gramophone, hardly an undiscriminating source of reviews, was also very positive. So let's stop the dumb blonde jokes, please!

1 out of 5 stars Really really really not good.......2006-05-23

Or in other words, really really bad. Occasionally Linda Brava's performance rises to the level of being only moderately bad, but mostly it is really bad.

Her intonation is suspect much of the time, and her bowing technique is deficient, resulting in an often scraping, uneven tone. At time, it even sounds as though her bow is skittering across the strings, which amazes me. That is elementary technique. With universally cautious tempi, it sounds almost as though she is afraid of the music, and it appears as if she did the once necessary take on each piece, called it good, and scurried out of the studio to attend to her other myriad business interests.

Clearly, these short & relatively undaunting pieces are beyond her limited technical capacities. There are no greater heights awaiting her in the world of classical music. Perhaps a crossover album or two might prolong this undeserving career.

    5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2003-02-25

Not only is Linda Brava a marvelous violinist, but she is also scorchingly gorgeous, so the pictures in the liner are just an added bonus. My favorite piece on the CD is Edvard Grieg's "Sonata for Violin and Piano No. 3 in C Minor."

    4 out of 5 stars A Nice Album.......2001-02-04

I bought the cd out of curiosity of linda's violin playing. i had no regrets in buying the cd. I quickly fell in love with salu't d'amour which is the first track of the cd. Among those nice pieces are Meditation by Massenet and Humoresque by Sibelius.

3 out of 5 stars Not quite what I expected.......2000-07-24

I was hoping the CD would have as much life as her rock cd's. Guess I just should stick to buying those. This is my 1st venture into buying a classical CD.

    4 out of 5 stars Themeless Opera.......2006-10-19

As far as I know this work of 1843 is the last major opera buffa to be composed unless the definition of the genre is expanded to include works like Verdi's Falstaff. Although the recording booklet states that Don Pasquale is Donizetti's "undoubted comic masterpiece," I prefer L'Elisir D'Amore (1832), a less formulaic work labeled a "melodrama." There is nothing wrong with formulaic art as long as the formula means something. Paisiello's opera buffa Astrologi Immaginari (1779) satirizes dilettante pretensions to being a "philosopher" and thus disposes of a vestige of Renaissance culture that was fading away after 1740. Paisiello's opera makes good sense and is perfectly matched by the music. I find it more difficult to assign meaning to Don Pasquale; and the opera may well appeal to audiences interested in themeless "mere entertainment." The work synthesizes Rossini's approach to instrumental music with Bellini's style of flowing bel canto arias. The appeal of bel canto might be described as a physical sensation. All art depends on sensation. But opera consists of drama, and themeless drama makes no sense. The recording booklet reports that at Paris, "The critics found the subject somewhat threadbare." Themeless work could not compete, for example, with the striking historical settings of Meyerbeer's Les Huguenots and Le Prophete or even with Bellini's Norma and I Puritani. The contrast between these operas and Don Pasquale is analogous to the one between the rich historical settings of Sir Walter Scott's novels and the uncolored, if intelligently worked out settings of Jane Austen. In appreciating Don Pasquale, one must develop a taste for Plain Jane and set aside "Robert the Devil." As Dr. Malatesta sings in Act I, Scene 5, "You have to play the simpleton." Ironically Donizetti based his most popular opera Lucia di Lammermoor on a Scott novel.

5 out of 5 stars Forget the others - buy this one!.......2003-10-02

I originally purchased the RCA Red Seal recording of this opera with Bruson-Mei-Lopardo-Allen never having heard the work before. While the Red Seal recording certainly did not sound bad, I couldn't help but think that, as the heroine, Mei missed a lot of opportunities to hit those incredible highs that Donizetti is so famous for. Since I wasn't familiar with the work, I only assumed that she opted to go an octave lower than Donizetti had originally intended for the part. Well, sure enough I finally saw the opera performed live in San Jose and was blown away by all the highs that the soprano hit throughout the show. I immediately purchased this recording to see if the Norina in this particular performance (Barbara Hendricks) offered a more gutsy performance and boy does she ever! Mei's voice on the Red Seal recording is undeniably beautiful, but Hendricks simply blows her out of the water with all of her vocal fireworks in this recording. The orchestras and male performers are equally good in both, but if you love the sound of a bel canto soprano hitting an incredible high note, then forget about the RCA recording and go for this one instead.

Like the can of lite beer that has stayed untouched in the back of my fridge for the past two years, so this cd will remain in the back of my collection for years to come. I am not a big lite jazz fan and feel that this is the genre that this cd comes closest to hitting. I purchased it solely based on my impression of Bossa Brava 3 which really made even this lower lip biting white boy want to get up and dance. If you like lite jazz - try it. If you like latin jazz - try #3.

5 out of 5 stars bravo for bossa-brava.......1999-06-30

I'm new to the latin jazz/bossa nova sound but I love it already. This album swings and features a clean, grooving sound. Good use of catchy riffs and occasional voices. For drummers, the album is a good practice vehicle for snare and rim work. A perfect record for hanging out at home with your woman, slowly getting loaded, but would also make a good party record. Best tracks: first, fifth and last. I'm hooked.

5 out of 5 stars This one's the best of the bunch!.......1999-05-09

I've heard all of the discs in the Bossa Brava series, and this one is by far the best. If your into that percussive, latin/brasilian-influenced style of acid jazz, look no further. The copy I bought had a sticker on the front from the manufacturer that read "10 salsa-soaked grooves to get you hot", and nothing could be more true! This would make a great party album.

      5 out of 5 stars Something special.......2002-11-26

I first heard a friend's cassette version of this album while spending a weekend in the pine woods of northern Arizona. I enjoyed the music so much that I took the took the name and address of the artist from the cassette case and wrote to her for the CD version. Even though I have owned it now since 1993 I come back to it often, and it's still one of my favorite CDs. I especially like that way she arranges music for the solo piano, and because of that, I like her solo CDs more than those with instrumental accompaniment. This is one of her best solo albums.

5 out of 5 stars Brava! by Sally Harmon.......2001-10-13

I played this quietly while my calculus students were working. Gradually, each one stopped doing math because they were so intent on listening. Finally, one asked, "What is this beautiful music?" It's my favorite soul lifting CD!!!! It includes the heart-wrenching melodies from Les Miserable "I Dreamed a Dream" and "Come to Me," and from Phantom of the Opera" "All I Ask of You,"'Angel of Music," and "Music of the Night."

      4 out of 5 stars Great Album.......2000-12-08

I heard this in my favorite little jewelry store in Lake Placid, NY. I asked what it was and I was lucky enough that they were selling the tape at the counter. This is the only Sally Harmon album I own. It's great! I am a big broadway fan and I love her interpetation of the Les Mis and Phantom songs. I can listen to this tape over and over again! Great instrumental music to relax or entertain by!

4 out of 5 stars This cd is a lot better than I first thought.......2000-08-08

This cd is one of Sallys' best sellers, and I can see why. When I first bought this cd several years ago, I was very disappointed with the performances here, but over time and hopefully some maturity this cd has won me over. I truely really like this music being performed here. Sally is a very gifted performer and it shows.

As for as the repertoire being offered here goes, it is a good one. There were a few songs that I didn't know or like. This usually is the case on almost all cds, songs being performed that you don't like.

The only real complaint I have about this cd is the sound production. On two songs there were some mistakes made by the engineer. For one on "Somewhere Out There" the sound was distorted. It probably was recorded at too loud a volume. On the second song, "The Summer Knows" there was a loud thump at the end of the song when the petal was released. These two occurances should never been allowed to happen.

I would like to strongly recommend this cd, it will please you.

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars The Mastersinger.......2000-06-24

If the second half of the 20th Century has musical signs, they must include that phenomenal German singer Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau who dominated the recital and concert halls, the opera stages and the recording studios in a way no other artist has done it, except maybe Leonard Bernstein. In celebration of this great artist's 75th birthday we have here a set which includes the gems of his lieder repertoire, starting with those great Schubert cycles in their most vivid performances. Just listen to those early renditions of the Schone Mullerin or with Jorg Demus, or to Schuman's Dichterliebe cycle (with the same pianist). And you shall not miss the artistry of this most sensitive voice in full volume of Mahler lieder with piano and orchestral songs. And what about the Morike lieder by Hugo Wolf? Well, you shall probably wonder at that special cooperation between the singer and the Russian pianist Svitoslav Richter. It is a performance of lifetime, and so it is with the Wintereise of Schubert with Barnboim at the piano. Those who know the artistry of Fischer-Dieskau and even those who have already other recordings of those great works will not regret having this special set. For the newcomers to this great artist there will be a lot to discover, The music itself, sure, but mainly the art of interpratation. In this alone Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau shine high and above all other singers.
