4 out of 5 stars A quite enjoyable surprise.......2005-05-06

I have never been a fan of cover albums, and I must say that in 1996 when I heard that Café Tacvba's next album would be full of covers, I was quite disappointed. Especially when a couple of years ago this same band criticized other bands for doing covers, now they were releasing an album full of those!

I am not sure but I believe that for this album the vocalist changed his name to `Anonimo', the album includes covers from Flans (an 80's pop band), Botellita de Jerez (another mexican rock band) and Leo Dan among others. It has only 8 tracks, but the eight of them are quite enjoyable.

Even though the songs were not new, what I never considered was that they changed the original music to the Café Tacvba style, which is totally unpredictable. Their version of `Chilanga Banda' made me buy this album, very different from the original, you basically know is the same song because of the title and the lyrics, everything else is totally café Tacvba. Their rendition of `No controles' was another pleasant surprise, especially when I never liked Flans, there's also an instrumental version of `Perfidia' which is one of my favorites, but the song that is really worth of mentioning is `Ojala que llueva café' (original by Juan Luis Guerra), the arrangement they made I promise you no one saw it coming, the last part of the song is now a classic thing an cheered in every concert they give.

If you can buy the special edition they released I would recommend it, it is a carton paper case with a very interesting work of design (as most of their albums)

Maybe not their best album, but a very rare and interesting piece of music that should be a guide to other bands on how to do a cover song, the only thing you need to do is adapt it to your style to make it different from the original and unique, and that's what Café Tacvba did in this album.

4 out of 5 stars "No Manches Dice La Changa".......2005-04-24

I usually stay away from cover albums, but this one isn't like all the others. "No Controles" sounds nothing like the original version and it features David Byrne (Talking Heads) siging backing vocals. "Chilanga Banda" is hilarious and "Como Te Extrano Mi Amor" reminds me of my childhood. I think my parents used to listen to the original version a lot. All the other songs are great too, but I usually skip the instrumental. I wouldn't recommend this album to newcomers though. The best of album or Re would be the best places to start. After that you'll end up wanting everything by Cafe Tacuba.

5 out of 5 stars Extraordinaria producción.......2003-05-17

5 out of 5 stars Cool covers.......2002-02-27

Cafe tacuba is one of the most interesting bands along with aterciepolados on the modern rock en español scene. These covers are very cool. Cafe tacubas style is hard to describe, I would say they are a ska rock band mixed with ranchera, industrial, pop, punk....They really have a unique sound. You only get 8 tunes here, but it is still worth it, the cover of "No Controles" absolutly rocks, as does "chilanga Banda" and the instrumental "perfidia" is neat as is "metamorfosis".

If you are sick of the normal "alternative rock" bands on the north american scene, then definitly check out groups like cafe tacuba whom are putting out some refreshing, original work.

3 out of 5 stars Avalancha De Exitos - Cafe Tacuba.......2001-04-01

This is probably one of the best albums as far as cover albums go. They covered a few recent hits such as Botellita de Jerez's Alarmala de Toz, which actually sounds better than the original. They also cover the girl band Flan's No Controles in such a way that you would never imagine a male band to cover. They also bring back the popular classic Como te Extrano by Leo Dan. Overall this has to be a very enjoyable album by one of today's most entertaining and best of the spanish rock bands. Cafe Tacuba Rules.

5 out of 5 stars El mejor grupo de rock en español!!.......2006-07-19

5 out of 5 stars AN AVALANCHE OF HUMAN PROPORTIONS.......2002-09-27

AVALANCHA is the last album by one of the greatest bands in Latin Rock history. As the album title conveys, herein one will find an inexorable, onrushing mass of emotion, pathos and beauty; a force of nature capable of overwhelming with its power. Enrique Bunbury marvels with his legendary voice and its tremendous feeling. The masterful guitars and base by Juan Valdivia and Joaquin Cardiel respectively are mesmerizing, capable of gothic metal riffs and gypsy melodies. Pedro Andreu delivers a laudable performance as drummer. The complex, poignant lyrics and multilayered significance within each song is a testament to the band's incredible talent.

The album begins with "Derivas," a small introitus of ambient, atmospheric guitar strings and eerie voices. This is followed by metal-riffed "Rueda, fortuna!" and "Deshacer el Mundo," Heroes' examination of fate and destiny. "Iberia Sumergida" and "Avalancha" explore youthful angst and its sense of purpose in this world. One is gripped by existential anxiety when listening to "En brazos de la fiebre" and "Parasiempre" (nothing lasts forever, pain is a rehearsal of death, etc.).

In addition to exploring metaphysical aspects of human experience, Heroes del Silencio address the decadence and passion within humanity in songs such as "Dias de Borrasca" a denouncement of hypocrisy, and nihilistic abandon in "Morir Todavia" and "Opio." The passions and desire within us all are expressed in "la chispa adecuada" and "la espuma de venus."

It seems incredible that such powerful themes are explored with such intensity, and accompanied by some of the greatest music by a Spanish band that is mostly unknown outside of Latin America. One is not far from the truth when proclaiming Heroes del Silencio one of the greatest rock bands of all time. This album is an experience one can not afford to miss. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. MAGNIFICENT.

3 out of 5 stars ME DEJAS CON HAMBRE.......2002-01-08

    5 out of 5 stars aaaaavancha!.......2001-05-08

this is probably their best album with metal anthems like rueda fortuna!, iberia sumergida, dias de borrasca and para siempre it shows how juan valdivia rocked the guitar, how joaquin cardiel made the hypnitic rythms on the base and the crazyness of pedro on the drums and not to mention the one of a kind elvis like vocals of enrique bunbury. also though, it has love songs like espuma de venus and the immortal , "chispa adecuada" and for us not to forget their decadence they have opio and morir todavia it was their last album and they went out with a bang!they're broken up now...but as the song says,..."no hay nada para siempre!!!" (nothing is forever!) HEROES DEL SILENCIO rock!!

    5 out of 5 stars Gothic Rock.......2001-04-29

If anyone is into bands like Stabbing Westward, Rotting Christ, or My Dying Bride then Heroes del Silencio is for you. I've seen the video Reuda Fortuna! on MTV Latino and I must say they must be influenced by old Stabbing Westward. If any person is into the stuff Opeth does minus the deathmetal vocal parts then that describes this band. This is the true stuff that Latin music is made of not Enrique. Its the dark music of gitano style. Listen, learn, live in the true darkness of Latin goth rock.
