The greatest songs ever?.......2007-07-26
Please buy it.
A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10
The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).
This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.
I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.
a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15
Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

Not ultimate- but wonderful, none-the-less.......2007-04-14
Without spending space here reiterating the specific pieces, their titles and lengths, I will simply list the composers whose works Bream presents so nicely in this collection. They span a range of about five centuries beginning in the time of England's Elizabeth I and spanning the years through to the 20th Century's premier Spanish and Brazilian classical guitar composers. The list reads like a `Whose Who" of classical plucked-string instrument music and of composers whose keyboard compositions work particularly well on the strings of a lute or guitar, and includes;
- John Dowland
- Francis Cutting
- Antonio Vivaldi
- Gaspar Sanz (*)
- Mateo Albeniz (*)
- Manuel de Falla
- Enrique Granados (*)
- Hector Villa-Lobos, and
- Joaquin Rodrigo
(*) = Pieces originally written for keyboard play.
Every classical guitarist has his own recognizable style and approach to the instrument and the material. An experience listener would not confuse Bream's work with that of Andres Segovia, for example: but it is not that one is better than the other. Each, in his own distinctive way, is simply superb. Though the Spanish influence is clearly audible with both musicians, Bream's stylings have a more contemporary lilt and inflection than do those of Segovia; he makes each piece his own. One suspects that each time he plays a piece it comes out differently according to the moment, his mood, the instrument and God knows what else. Segovia, on the other hand, was well known for his constancy once he had found a version of each piece that fully suited his own ear and temperament.
While I am admittedly a Segovia fan, I find Bream's renditions to be noticeably fresher and each infused with an aura of presence in the here-and-now which I find especially enjoyable.
The collection is neither complete not `ultimate', but it is VERY good and well worth having in any collection of classical guitar music. In fact, for audiophiles not familiar with this genre, it is a fair place to begin to develop an ear for and a listener's knowledge of and experience with the classical guitar.
Very Nice Bream Collection.......2005-03-03
Overall, this CD consists of a good variety of masterfully played music. I only wish most of Bream's recordings were recorded using later technology, which would make his playing shine even more.

Put together in evident haste, this collection is nevertheless a surefire, appetite-whetting starter kit both for the budding operaphile and for the simply intimidated. The samplings include some of the greatest voices from EMI's vaults: here you'll find the polar opposites Callas and Caballe, the golden wonder of Wunderlich and early Carreras, and a host of other singers who've made their stamp on this century. Emphasis is on the soprano and tenor range, while the lower voices are given short shrift, and the selections cleave predictably to standard Italian and French repertory (with an occasional surprise, such as an aria from Lalo's Le Roi d'Ys). Still, the nearly three and a half hours of music represented will make a ready convert of anyone who hasn't experienced the specially heightened, time-stopping expressivity--beyond the power of mere song--that is the aria's function and will likely spark a desire to explore the larger operatic context in several cases. And though the lack of a booklet with texts or at least bios of the artists is frustrating, this is a good place to begin for an overview of the mesmeric power extraordinary voices can wield. --Thomas MayCustomer Reviews:

Congradulations EMI for an incredible vision of the greatest opeatic moments recorded.

Ultimate indeed.......2000-08-02
EMI have a enormous archive to pick their recordings from, and that of course makes it easy to find first rate interpretations of all the arias included in this collection, and I do think that almost all of the arias are wonderfully sung here. It may be possible to find better performances of single numbers here and there, but I've not yet heard a more complete, wellmatched, and so thrillingly sung collection.
Well then, is there nothing wrong with this compilation? You might find it a little odd that there are so many soloarias and so few duets, terzettos a.s.o, especially since the drama in operas oftenly is greater in numbers with more than one singer. You might also wish that some of the recordings had been a little more modern (most of these recordings were made during the 50's, 60's & 70's) giving place to younger performers that still are singing on the stages, but those are minor objections when the over all quality is so high.
The maybe strongest objection to this collection is that there is not one single part from any of Wagner's operas, and not any number sung in german, nor is there any parts from modern or russian operas. That may be a miss if you're interested in Wagner, russian and modern opera - on the other hand I think you should watch Wagners, russian and modern operas before listening to recordings of them - and if you've seen them and liked them you will probably buy the whole opera anyway. Therefor I still think that this is a extremely strong and complete compilation - the best I've run into so far. Easy to listen to, yet never banal.

Album Description
June Bronhill was one of the greatest and most colourful stars Australia produced in the last century. A warm, witty and glamorous personality blessed with a glorious coloratura soprano voice, impeccable diction and charisma to spare, June endeared herself to audiences throughout Britain and Australia. Small of stature she may have been but when she was on a stage she certainly commanded attention. She was a diva with the common touch. She never forgot her Australian roots and frequently returned to her homeland for opera, musical and concert engagements. `Liquid gold in vocal form' was how one critic described June's voice and on this three CD set that gold is in plentiful supply, displaying the artistry of a much-loved ambassador for Australia - June Bronhill. More details closer to release.Album Details

Going for Baroque.......2003-01-09
Conducted by energetic Robert King and his King's Consort, this is just superb!
It will introduce one to baroque or add to one's enjoyment. Especially enjoyed Purcell's "Hear my prayer, O Lord" and Gabrieli's "Salvator noster."

Customer Reviews:
Introduction to Dame Nellie Melba.......2007-03-09
Another introductory note. She was 44 on the earliest recordings and nearly 50 on later operatic recordings; there were some late recording sessions, including one mentioned below, when she was in her mid-60s.
A sampling of her recordings on this CD. . . .
From Mozart's "Le Nozze di Figaro," there is "Voi che sapete." Melba shows a light voice. The technology (acoustic), of course, obscures a lot of her vocal qualities. The transition from her lower to middle and upper registers is a bit rough. There is, though, a smooth line in her singing. She displays a rich voice.
The cut that best illustrates the comments quoted from the "liner notes" might be the "Mad Scene" from Thomas' "Hamlet." Melba shows a pretty agile voice in this work. Early on, there is a middling--but not very good--trill. She hits some high notes well early on. The first segment of the scene is smoothly and even elegantly sung. The cabaletta suggests that coloratura technique has changed from the turn of the 19th to the 20th century compared with the past 40 years or so. She hits her high notes fairly well. But there are some passages that are almost beyond describing. At one point, she sounds as if she were barking rather than singing. There were other examples, as the liner notes suggest, of "vocal ungraciousness." The cabaletta is not very compelling coloratura work as I listen to things.
On the other hand, her version of Puccini's "Si, mi chiamano Mimi" (from "La Boheme") is smoothly and well sung. Her "musicality" is good. All in all, a very nice version.
Finally, an interesting novelty. She sings "Swing low, sweet chariot" in her mid-60s. Her voice is darker and deeper than other cuts on this CD. But she exhibits a very musical version of this work. It is affecting, in fact. She does not overpower the song with operatic technique. This is a nice change of pace on the CD and is a solid version of this tune.
As a whole, this is up and down. There are the moments of great musicality--and some pretty ungracious singing, too. This appears to be a useful introduction to Melba's body of work.
