To gauge the magnitude of Israel Kamakawiwo'ole's popularity in his native Hawaii, consider this: following his death in 1997 (at age 38, attributed to his profound obesity), Kamakawiwo'ole's body lay in state in the state capitol, only the second person to receive such an honor. Kamakawiwo'ole's appeal lies in his love for prestatehood, precondominium Hawaii and the expressiveness of his gently passionate voice, which can float through higher registers with an ease that brings Johnny Mathis to mind. Several selections ("Ka Pua U'i," "White Sandy Beach of Hawai'i," the sun-kissed "La 'Elima") feature Kamakawiwo'ole in a traditional mood, using only his ukulele to adorn the charm of his native lyricism. Others, such as the Jimmy Buffett-like "Maui Hawaiian Sup'pa Man" add playful contemporary touches that suit Kamakawiwo'ole's style. Most touching are the string-backed laments that open and close the album, "Hawai'i '78 Introduction" and "Hawai'i '78," initially a reflection on his father's death, later on the passing of Hawaii's native culture. Best known is his medley "Somewhere over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World," which played over the closing credits of the film Meet Joe Black. --Terry WoodAlbum Description
There's a smart balance of traditional Hawaiiana and contemporary tunes on this CD. There's heart-tugging warmth along with unexpected chuckles. The end result is a candid, honest reinforcement of his vocal breadth.Customer Reviews:

The artist behind Facing Future, the top-selling Hawaiian album of all time, the late Israel "IZ" Kamakawiwo'ole was possessed of a voice so sweet, so tender, and so lovely that it continues to deeply stir those who hear it long after he died. Lovingly assembled and notated by producer Jon de Mello, Alone in IZ World is comprised of both alternate versions of Kamakawio'ole's best-loved songs as well as tracks never before heard by the public. The latter category includes versions of "Hanohano No Na Cowboy," the playfully incomplete opening on "Mona Lisa," and "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star," on which IZ takes a rare turn at harmonizing with himself. In light of his premature passing, devastatingly beautiful alternate cuts of "Starting All Over Again" and "In This Life" are especially poignant. And "Over the Rainbow"--IZ's renditions were heard in Meet Joe Black and Finding Forrester--may never again sound so pure. --Paige La GroneAlbum Description

Released in 1996, Israel Kamakawiwo'ole, better known as IZ is much a part of Hawaii as the beautiful blue oceans. Every cut on this album you can hear the power and majesty that is IZ, which gets into the listeners' heart and soul. "In Dis Life" serves-up a mix of Hawaiian language standards, two hit tunes from local artists, several fresh new songs and a Jawaiian remake of "Starting All Over Again". A must have if you are a fan of IZ's other material.Customer Reviews:

I'd say by far his best album........2006-05-14
As for the selections on this CD, I particularly enjoy the title song, "Wai'alae," and his rendition of the Hawaiian Style Band's "Living in a Sovereign Land." The contemporary tunes show a different side of him. "'Opae E" has been a favorite of mine forever. I also like his jazzy rendition of "Aloha Ku'u Pua" and his medley of "Na Ka Puio" and "Keyhole Hula," otherwise known as "Kauoha Mai."
The only song that I think is just okay is "Yokozuna," at least for now, but maybe it'll grow on me eventually. I don't hate it though, just not one of my favorites. Maybe that's just because I would choose Hawaiian language songs over contemporary if I had to make a choice.
Please get this CD as well as all his others.

Several days later we were in a shop and once again I heard his voice over the stores speakers and had to have the CD. This is classic Hawaiian music that brings me back to Hawaii every time I hear his music...and that is far since I live in New York.
Several years later I looked him up on the Internet and was heartbroken to learn he passed away...a week after we left Hawaii. I have purchased every CD as well as DVD's that have become available.
IZ died with a huge heart and the world has lost a great singer that believed in Hawaii and the land that was meant to be. You would be surprise to hear how many times you hear his music in movies, commercials and shows. A performer that will be remembered forever.

The album speaks of IZ's love for his Hawaiian people, along with the undying love he has for the human race. Messages of peace and love are carried throughout each cut on this album. Hit or Miss.......2006-05-07
When Israel is doing his beachboy-style songs (loose, comedic, played solo on the ukulele or with minimal overdubs) he provides a glimpse of the old Hawaiian spirit so lacking in contemporary Hawaiian music. Which is to say that most present-day Hawaiian music is so serious, that it almost sounds like Contemporary Christian Music. Israel's versions of "Kamalani" and "I Ke Alo O Iesu" are slick, sappy and overwrought with sentimentality. In other words, they are the opposite of the loose, mellow and cool sound inherent to beachcomber cuts like "Tengoku Kara Kaminari" and "Theme from Gilligan's Island."
Yeah, that's right... this strong native Hawaiian voice tackles the theme from Sherwood Schwartz's tacky, '60s go-go, beachcomber television show (starring TV beatnik Bob Denver). But in doing so, Kamakawiwo'ole puts his own spin on the song, first bringing an oceanside humor that was not on the original theme recording for the show's credits. But halfway through "Theme from Gilligan's Island," Israel turns the song into a loose politcal statement, as he reminds the listener that he has no need to come back from THIS island... back to a place where there are cars, pollution and government corruption. In that sense, the song connects on many levels, even though it seems like a silly idea at first glance.
"E Ala E" -- the opening track on this album -- is a fiercly political cry that works as a personal plead for Hawaiian civil rights and sovereignty over their own land. The field recordings of Hawaiian demonstrators marching and chanting in the background gives the song another layer of depth.
All in all, there's enough goodness going on here to get you past the sappy material. But there are better Kamakawiwo'ole albums out there, including his entire back catalogue with the Makaha Sons of Niihau, plus IZ's first two solo albums.

Best Music On The Planet.......2005-10-27
This live cd by Bruddah Iz is something very special. It's something that would make me proud to broadcast into space, traveling until it's received and pondered by an intelligent lifeform. It's powerful, beautiful music, presented by a kind-hearted man. This is absolutely how I would like our planet to be represented. Perhaps this is why I frequently listen to Iz after I've overdosed on the complexities and harshness of living, or the bad vibes seen on the news.
Someone below stated that there is too much talking, and not enough music. I don't get it. I have everything that Iz ever created, including cds, dvds and videos, and treasure every single one. The fact that he does talk is what is special here. Iz is a generous window into an indigenous culture, and he shares this like no other. But, the cd is mostly about the music, and I never gained a sense that this is chatty or unmusical. I love hearing him talk, especially since he has moved on and the talking has stopped. At the end of Alone In IZ World there is a secret track, where he is talking about having trouble breathing, shortly before he moved on. This is powerful, and very moving.
Facing Future is a great place to start, and this cd is a great second ... or perhaps E Ala E. But, I've nearly worn this one out. Iz was musical down to his bones, but more than that his music is healing and represents the highest nature of us.

Better known among his fans as "Iz," Israel Kamakawiwo'ole was a phenomenon in the Hawai'ian Islands totally below Mainland radar. So important was Iz's singing to Native Hawa'ians and Hawai'i residents alike that Governor Ben Cayetano declared a statewide day of mourning when Iz passed away in 1997--this despite his controversial Hawai'i-sovereignty politics. Ka Ano'i was the 1991 winner of the prestigious Na Hoku Hanohano Award for best contemporary Hawai'ian album, and Iz himself won for best male vocalist that year. This album is appealing mainly for its honesty and simplicity: simplicity of tone consistent with the casual ukulele and slack-key sound, and honesty of voice through Hawai'i-enhanced allegorical tracks like "Coney Island Washer Woman" and "I'll Be There." A later version of Iz's "Over the Rainbow" was featured in the 1998 film Meet Joe Black, as well. Despite his imposing stature, Iz was an embodiment of the simplicity and gentleness in the music itself, more noticeable in this early album than in his later work. --Erik MackiCustomer Reviews:

In 30 years of recording with the Soft Boys and solo-wise, Robyn Hitchcock's enduring brand of madcap mayhem has raced between English punk, acoustic folk and sonically lush pop. But by teaming with Seattle pals Pete Buck (REM) and Scott McCaughey (The Minus 5), Hitchcock has made a return to garage rock not heard since 1989's Queen Elvis. More than capable musicians, Buck and McCaughey are long-time fans of the legendary British songwriter-whose droll lyrics and quirky melodies recall the late Syd Barrettand they grasp the assignment with aplomb. Buck's indelible guitar instills a chiming luster to songs like "Underground Sun" and "Red Locust Frenzy," while McCaughey provides a random, finger-snapping piano to the delightful "Belltown Ramble," which finds Hitchcock serving as the clever hobnobbing tour guide of his favorite Emerald City neighborhood. As usual, a sharp cockney twang is Hitchcock's best instrument, carving up the scatty title song as aptly as his ode to San Francisco "(A Man's Gotta Know His Limitations) Briggs" or his salute to "NY Doll," late bassist Arthur Kane. --Scott HolterCustomer Reviews:
Here Is Another Robyn Hitchcock Record.......2007-03-25
As a longtime fan (I first saw Robyn perform when I was in college in 1985) I think it's great that Robyn has steadily recorded and released new material for all this time. It's just a bit frustrating to consider his output since about 1990--the intermittent moments of brilliance on his records of the last fifteen years indicate that he's capable of creating another "Underwater Moonlight" if he'd just not settle for putting out product and focus a little harder on the songwriting.
Best Hitchcock in Years.......2007-02-22
Great record.......2007-02-16
Surprisingly Weak Offering.......2007-01-25
Gone are the superb production values that rivaled the best output of Geoff Emerrick. Gone are the unique rhythms and changing tempos that made Hitchcock's music unpredictable. Gone are the forward vocals that made it seem as though Hitchcock himself would emerge from your radio. What we have is instead is a phantom, someone poorly masquerading as the heir of Barrett.
I hate to write negative reviews, but I found this to be a tired, flaccid recording... disheartening, really, especially in light of such masterpieces as Fegmania!, Element of Light, and Black Snake Diamond Roll.
Where should I start? Perhaps Hitchcock's artistic edge is blunted by the overuse of acoustic accompaniment, but then, that's just the tip of the iceberg. Hitchcock's signature writing style, one of surreal images and unique wordplay, has almost become cliche to even the casual listener. Put a fish or frog in the title, throw in some mathematical abstractions, and Bob's your uncle. Is it really so hard for Hitchcock to step out from behind his metaphors? Come on, Robyn, even your hero Dylan could write a straightforward love song once in a while.
That said, the most glaring and depressing aspect of this cd remains the fact that Hitchcock belts out these songs with a sloth-like enthusiasm that leaves one wondering if his passion for singing is gone.
Nice Surprise!.......2007-01-17

One of the more woefully underappreciated blues artists of the last three decades, Taj Mahal has consistently made great records that combine his extensive knowledge of roots music with a refreshingly non-elitist sensibility. Giant Step/De Ole Folks At Home from 1969 was Taj's commercial high point, and it's easy to understand why. The first half of the album (originally released as a two-record set) features Taj and band blending rock, pop and blues on songs like "Take a Giant Step," "Give Your Woman What She Wants" and "Good Morning Little Schoolgirl." The second half is more laid-back and down-home, with Taj essaying solo renditions of "Fishing Blues," "Stagger Lee" and "Light Rain Blues" on banjo, harmonica and acoustic guitar. The most effortlessly enjoyable record of an effortlessly enjoyable career. --Dan EpsteinCustomer Reviews:
An American Classic...just wonderful!.......2006-06-14
The album opens with Ain't Gwine Whistle Dixie Anymore and just builds on that wonderful tune. My favorites are the gospel rich You're Gonna Need Somebody On Your Bond, the countryish Six Days On The Road, the classic folk tune Candy Man, and finally the catchy child like Fishin Blues. Not a bad song in this collection.
Taj Mahal should be honored at the Kennedy Center. He is an American original. A wonderful, naturally gifted singer, and performer.
Finally, for a real treat catch Taj Mahal as Ike in the 1972 film classic Sounder. Buy this CD, you will not be disappointed.

Yes... it's that good........2006-05-25
One of the better parts of this CD is the contribution of the other players. The rest of the band contributes as much to the songs as Coltrane, and to great effect. There aren't as many lengthy Trane solos, which I usually enjoy but at times find tedious (I know, I know, it's almost sacreligious to suggest such a thing). On the title track, Elvin Jones works his drum kit, and in particular his cymbals, as beautifully as anything on a Love Supreme. The title track also features Eric Dolphy's flute and a stunning two-bass solo section that is one of the more unique and wonderful moments in my entire jazz collection.
This is a solid set of music all around-- not a single song here is filler. If you like Coltrane's music from this period, you should definitely add this to your collection.
Is It Possible?.......2006-04-29
It's only four songs, but each one is just a mindblower. The title track is crazy good. I remember listening to it with my then girlfriend (now my wfe) and she said, "What's this cacaphony?" To this day I still harbor a bit of resentment towards her for saying that because to me that piece of music just pulls out all the stops and makes you realize that Coltrane was no ordinary composer...no ordinary musician...no ordinary human being.
Here was a man that had a thumb on the pulse of his own soul. Here was a man that could translate the sounds, the squeals, and the squalls of the angels. This CD belongs to every music fan's collection. This is not just for diehard jazz fans, this is for music lovers everywhere.
Love yourself a little more and buy this CD. It's flippin' fantastic!
