In the history of recorded music, there are a few albums that define a genre. Among them are Glenn Gould's 1955 recording of Bach's Goldberg Variations and Miles Davis's hypnotic Kind of Blue. In that select realm, timbalero Tito Puente's 1957 Top Percussion is the most influential Latin jazz recording of all time. Simply put, this date is a once-in-a-lifetime summit meeting of Cuban and Puerto Rican master percussionists of Afro-Cuban music: Mongo Santamaria, Franciso Aguabella, Willie Bobo, and Julito Collazo. Together, these masters explore the endless folkloric inventions and dimensions of Cuba's complex drum music-- from the Afrocentric bembe/Santeria syncopations of "Eleguara" and "Obatala Yeza" to the clave-coded "Mon Ti," "Four by Two," and "Conga Alegre." The "hit" is the cool cha-cha "Ti-Mon-Bo," named for Tito, Mongo, and Bobo. Like their African musical forefathers, Tito Puente and his compatriots have delivered an ancestral drum message that has danced and entranced musicians and listeners for years. --Eugene Holley Jr.

2 out of 5 stars not to great.......2007-04-04

We were disappointed with this CD, but for the price I guess we can't expect much. I didn't care for the new style presentation of the songs. I like a more traditional rendering.

3 out of 5 stars Not so bad, 100 tunes for 4$.......2005-06-22

I red the comments of two other people who have bought this 4 CD BOX SET and it is not really so bad. I will even add that there are some excellent tunes. However, I must agree with the fact that few tunes seem to have been recorded 40 or 50 years ago, mainly when you hear the scratches of an old turntable but it is just 2 or 3 tunes. Furthermore, if you do not know American music, it is a good BOX SET to buy if you consider that you received 4 CD for 4$ including 100 tunes. On these 4 CD, I have heard some orchestration that I have never heard before and I consider that they are different but interesting. Any way, after hearing these 100 tunes, you will say to yourself that you like this tune, this other tune, this other tune and so on and you will be able to buy a more expensive CD with the tunes that you like. However, I have bought many CDs in the last few weeks and as you know, there are always some tunes that you like and some tunes that you do not like on every CD that you will buy. So, don't buy it at 25$ but at 4 or 5$ dollars, it is a very good choice for 100 tunes.

1 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for........2004-07-04

You get what you pay for. The singers put their own spin on the singing of each song. If you didn't hear the words you would not recognize some of them. Even some of the music sounds like a bad recording of music played on a turntable. Definitely not worth the price.

1 out of 5 stars Now I know why there were no song samples to listen to ..........2004-07-04

I wish this review had been here when I was thinking of purchasing it. I guess you get what you pay for. If you are thinking of buying this, you are better off recording your own CDs (or at least buying one that you can listen to a sampling of the songs). This album includes songs that were mere recordings of the songs playing on an old record player. It's almost so unbelievable that it is funny.

3 out of 5 stars Not what you're thinking........2007-07-05

A lot of people have preconceptions about Afro-Cuban music and what it should sound like. This CD will correct this. The bulk of this CD is no polished studio product. No, when I listen to this CD, aside from a few tracks, I feel as though these musicians have existed for hundreds of years, and one day a studio sort of seemed to be built around them, and they just sort of shrugged as they played as they have always played.

In some ways, the raw nature of this CD is very appealing. As I have said, it is definitely REAL. At times however, it can get old. The majority of the tracks consist of a vocal leader doing call and response with other singers as percussion rhythms fill the surrounding musical space. Often times there are so many instruments, and the recording technology so primitive, that the music often becomes a mess of indistinguishable racket where the listener can barely pick out the Downbeat. I feel as though some of the tracks with more diverse orchestration would be top notch if we could properly hear what each instrument is doing.

My favorite tracks of this album are those at the end. There, the most care is taken to preserve each instrument's personality.

If you're Latino or African and want to know more about your roots, listen to this CD. If you're a drummer or percussionist and want to hear some rhythms you don't encounter in the typical Western musical tradition, listen to this CD. If you like Ricky Martin, leave this CD alone.

5 out of 5 stars A Gotta Get!!!.......2007-03-23

Recorded in 1957, this is truly an unbelievable record, and a wonderful introduction to both Latin percussion and the Afro/Cuban folkloric tradition. Though Puerto Rican by birth, Tito was an initiate to the Cuban Santeria religion, and in this album he pays homage to the spiritual and musical roots of the Mambo and Cha Cha styles for which he became most famous. Tito, Mongo, Willie Bobo, Julito Collazo, etc., all play at an unsurpassed level of virtuosity and creativity, maintaining a dizzying array of poly-rhythms that provide a virtual catalog of the West African rhythms that filtered through Cuba to become the Latin music we know and love today. As honest, beautiful, and interesting a record as any Tito Puente made. An absolute must for anyone with even the slightest interest in Latin music, drumming, Cuban culture and experience, Tito Puente, or even rhythm in general. Go get it!!!

5 out of 5 stars The world's best latin-american percussionist- in full swing.......2003-03-07

In case anyone had any doubts -- at all -- that Tito could play the real, hardcore, pure Afro-Cuban percussion, then this album should settle that question. With Mongo Santamaria and several other percussion heavyweights on board, Tito pounds away on some of the toughest-sounding rhythm work imaginable. The second half of the album gets funkier and more slinky, with a subtle, jazzy bass added into the mix. This is a killer instrumental album, formidable and funky in every aspect. Recommended!

Though Horne is audibly at the end of her long and rich career, she did a good deed for American music with this disc, which consists of songs by Samuel Barber, Leonard Bernstein, and a new song cycle by William Bolcom, from which the disc takes its title. Horne's voice has a quiver, a lack of center, almost as if it refuses to stop singing Rossini (Horne's lifelong specialty). However, it's worth buying for the Bolcom cycle, which is one of his best vocal works, typically an eclectic, natural outgrowth of Bernstein's style with Horne gamely employing a wide range of vocal techniques with more eloquence than one could hope for. --David Patrick Stearns

      5 out of 5 stars Exceptionally moving.......2003-10-16

This is AMERICAN SONGS at their most moving and emotional best, not to mention with great melody. Unlike a lot of American song literature (not broadway type, but "serious classical art songs"), these songs are actually quite beautiful, melodic, and can touch the heart of the listener easily. There is no strain to enjoy them. There is a bit of "sameness" between them, which is my only complaint about this recording; one piece starts to sound like another, especially if you are not listening carefully while listening. Even then, it is still very lovely.

It has been mentioned that Horne is now far past her prime, and that may be, but even far past her prime she is far better than most singers half her age. There is still vibrancy, life, and depth to her voice. It communicates on a very deep level. Martin Katz, her life long accompanist, is, as usual, a revelation as an accompanist. Unlike people think, the accompanist just doesn't play in the background, he is a very vital part of making a performance work. Accompaning singers is a very new art form, and many performers of earlier ages simply had very bad accompanist. With Gerald Moore we started to have people who knew how to support the singer, actually adding to the performance giving it depth and helping the singer shine. Now we are so used to good accompanist, and are so accustomed to their high level of performance, it is very easy to forget what they add.

Katz knows Horne well, and is fully aware of when she is having troubles supporting a phrase, or when she is in best voice. He gives so much to her awesome performance through his very sensitive way of playing this music.

I would recommend this for anyone to buy: fans of modern art songs, fans of Marilyn Horne, and simply fans of good singing.

5 out of 5 stars Horne brings these wonderful masterpieces to life!.......1999-07-17

Throughout the Barber, Bolcom and Bernstein, Marilyn Horne uses her ability to combine technical definition with artistic movement and expansion. Having had the opportunity to see her perform this literature live was an emotionally elevating experience. The way Horne and Katz have reworked a few of the Berstein pieces brings new life and perspectuve to these already wonderful pieces. I highly recommend this recording for the casual classical listener, as well as, for the student that enjoys learning from a master through their art.

      5 out of 5 stars Minimalism.......2007-01-17

This CD is a great view of minimalistic music. Most of the pieces use saxophones, but two use things not generally considered instruments. For one piece, microphones swinging above speakers are recorded and it really makes you think about music in everyday things. You would not guess this particular piece was swinging microphones if you heard it without this knowledge. I really enjoyed this CD. However, as a string intrumentalist, it would have been nice to hear something with strings.

        5 out of 5 stars interesting indeed.......2003-07-11

I find the earlier work by Glass to be his best. It's exciting because in this time Glass, with others like Steve Reich, comes to a new style in classical music: minimal. Later work by Glass will be less and less true to this style, it waters down to more usual, standard 19th century kind of classical (that's a generalization, yes). Only the melodies are played over the same minimal sounding support.
Looking through some cd's with earlier work by glass, I believe Contrary Motion is thought to be an important piece by Glass. Listening to it emphasizes this idea: you hear the, by now, well known, repeated, subtly changing repetitions. What's nice about this piece compared to ensemble pieces, like a version of Contrary motion, for instance, is that it clarifies Glass' minimal idea better because it's only one musician playing. This idea is further well explained in the booklet and, playfully, on the cd by tapping on a table by Steffen Schleiermacher.
Besides Contrary motion there's an even more minimal track on this cd: two pages (which referes to the fact that the, in this case, 27 minutes of music can be written out on two pages (an idea inspired by minimalist Terry Riley?)). This only has only one ever slightly changing melody line and clarrifies Glass' minimal method of adding and cutting to and from a melody line.
Both the minimal tracks have an extremely hypnotising, trance envoking quality to them. That is: if your in for that, otherwise, the booklet explains, you may just find them extremely boring.
The cd is completed by a nice, more normal sounding, track, composed for the first visit of the Dalai Lama to New York: Mad Rush.

        3 out of 5 stars Interesting.......2002-12-04

This disc contains some of Philip Glass' early organ works, showcasing the repetitive style that made him famous. the first and last tracks on the CD are more repetitive than the middle track, and are somewhat like musical "paintings", not meant to be actively listened to, but just played in the background, where you can visit them from time to time.

The middle track, "Mad Rush", might be rushy but certainly isn't mad. It is in a strict formal structure, with a quiet theme contrasted by a fst, loud theme, and going back and forth between the two. This track is overall the most enjoyable on the CD.

I don't understand the two versions of "One+One"; first why are they on an "Early Keyboard Works" CD, and second, I've just never been able to understand the intricate complexities of music meant to be played by banging on a tabletop.
