This is a terrific cd. Not sure if concert recordings are a good intro to an artist, but some of the stuff here is very special. The version here of Amo esta isla is worth the price.

The lost "angel".......2007-04-13

Having followed Martirio's career very closely in the last years because she's a very special performer, and for that I must confess beforehand that I gravitate toward her, this time however I think that she got herself in "camisa de 11 varas" (she bit more that she could chew).
These tracks are really extraordinary songs that haven't been tarnished by the years, decades actually, since they were written, and it is my humble opinion that something clipped the wings of Martirio's "angel" in this work.
Maybe the songs were too much for her, or too Cuban for her... or it could be that I had heard them before to other extraordinary singers: Elena Burke (Primera lluvia, Tengo, Me faltabas tu, No pidas imposibles), Lucy Fabery (Primera lluvia), the composer Ela O'Farrill and Pacho Alonso (Cosas que pasan), and the comparison was unavoidable... and negative to Martirio.
I listened over and over again the cd trying to find out why she sang mezza voce in most songs to the point that I almost couldn't hear her. I tried hard to find something good to say about her singing. But she stereotyped the songs by singing softly almost in every track, and she didn't milk the lyrics to their full potential. No drama here, no poetry whatsoever.
To me the cd was big let down maybe because I moved heaven and earth to get it even before Amazon and local stores had it. It came out in Spain the day after I left Madrid.
I do celebrate the initiative of the producers -and urge others to follow the example- in bringing into the light these beautiful and oh-so-well-made songs.

MARTIRIO- "PRIMAVERA EN NUEVA YORK".......2007-03-27

Female flamenco-bolero-balada singer "Martirio" visited New York City for the
recording sessions included in this album. In it are old Cuban and Latin classic bolero favorites such as "Ese Sentimiento Que Se Llama Amor" and "Me Faltabas Tu" composed by Jose Antonio Mendez, "Que Me Importa" by Mario Fernandez Porta, "Alma Libre" by Juan Bruno Tarraza, etc. The romantic-jazz musical ensemble is virtually unbeatable with luminaries like Paquito D'Rivera, this time playing the clarinet, Kenny Drew,Jr. on piano, George Mraz on bass, Dafnis Prieto on timpanis,Claudio Roditi,fliscorn, Edgardo Miranda,guitar and Houston Person on sax. These recent N.Y.C. sessions were done in May of 2006 and I think this is how the producers arrived at the title of this great CD, "Martirio"- "Primavera en Nueva York", which translates, "Martirio"- "Spring in New York". A great performance and a great album, which is presently pricey, but worth it in my opinion. Don't miss this one.

I had the pleasure of recently reading in a copy of 'FLAMENCO INTERNACIONAL' magazine in an interview with SR. NUNEZ, that Paco De Lucia says Gerardo Nunez is the best technician in flamenco guitar today, he should know and I agree! For proof just listen to the last two tracks on this cd, that's where he goes beyound Vicente Amigo, and don't get me wrong, I like Vicente and alot of the other guys too, but Gerardo is just overwhelming. SINCERELY,TEDDY.

I was disappointed with this album as a whole. Maybe I'm not used to the idea of Fusion Flamenco, but the collaborations of styles in this CD seem to only steal from the beauty and pureness of heart that I find is synonymous with Flamenco. I was influenced to buy this from someone elses rave review and now have learned to trust my instincts. Nunez is obviously talented, but I question his taste. I wish I liked the CD, but feel like I've only wasted my sixteen bucks.

Gerardo Nunez basically breaks all rules of the traditional flamenco guitar playing, his style is out of this world, specially when he plays segurillas and sevillanas.

If you are looking for Flamenco sound that will turn your head around, this is the one. Nunez has other CD's out, Jucal, Calima, etc, none of those compare to Flamencos in New York, he was at his best when he recorded this CD.

Excellent, highly recommend.......2005-04-27

I had the pleasure of meeting Los Pleneros at Rutgers in 1995 and I was immediately hooked. While Bomba and Plena music is lots of fun all on its own, this group takes it to another level. I can't seem to keep my Puerto Rican hips still when this CD is playing. If you ever get the chance to catch one of their performances, I guarantee you won't be sitting down for long, they'll make sure of that!

Puerto Rican Roots.......2000-07-19

If you haven't encountered Plena before, one of the great musical traditions of Puerto Rico, this album is a great place to start. It's a beautifully conceived project wonderfully well executed. Be prepared to hear great soulful vocals with terrific folky arrangements.

Somos Boricuas.......2000-04-19

This is an amazing CD. When I first discovered it a few years ago, I felt like I found something antique and valuable. I still feel that way. The most interesting cut on the CD is "Tilin", which almost any African American raised on the East Coast will recognize from Sunday school as "He 'Rose". Whether the tune came from Africa to both Borinquen and the States,or the early Puerto Rican migrants brought it to the States where it was adapted by African Americans, it shows a clear overlap of cultures. The CD should be your first purchase, if you're interested in learning about bomba y plena.

Thr essence of Puerto Rican Music.......2000-04-05

This album is one their best. Especially their fine tribute to a true "son" of Puerto Rico Pedro Albizu-Campos. One of the islands most vocal leaders/statesman. Who voraciously fought for Puerto Ricos Independence, during the the early part of the 20th century. The albums beautiful blends of "Bomba y Plena" help mark the islands unique folklorical history and music. The album is a real joy to listen too.

The service is very good, the item if was not broken will be fantastic. I love old music, but this specific item, the case came broken and I can not listen to the 4 first songs, the rest is fantastic.

The Voice.......2003-01-05

From the onset, beginning with the Agustin Lara penned "Noche de Ronda" the incredible, velvety voiced Javier Solis sets the table for some smooth romantic music from a different era. This is a single disc with two LP's with the result being lots of music for your buck, with the possibilities of unforgetable romance. Javier Solis is quite possibly one of the finest bolero singers to have ever walked the planet; Solis had avoice for the ages that in spite of all the great contemporary Latin singers out there as yet to be matched. This is one persons humble opinion of course. The music itself is full of lush orchestration, playing backdrop to the voice of Solis as his amazing vocals carries you back in time, before my time and probably yours, to a nostalgic Mexico. There are plenty of well known classics here including the bohemian "Vagabundo, " the simply enchanting romantic "Cuando Vuelva a Tu Lado" that creates shivers as you listen to the Spanish lyrics, and the better-than -Luis Miguel version of "Perfidia" that laments a tortured soul, "Solamente Una Vez" with it's Nelson Riddle-like orchestration that plays softly while Solis croons away, "Siboney" where Solis demonsratates the fine range of his voice as he digs deep for a resounding bellowing interpretation while sweet Vera Cruz like marimbas echo softly in the background or the often recorded "Besame Mucho" which is reflective of the often somber, melancholy character that Solis seemed to portray. This is a great disc for old and new fans of timeless Mexican music. Different than some of his other LP's in that their are no rancheras, Solis seemed to be trying a more sophisticated International flavor with equally pleasing results. There are however some mariachi tinged songs like "Imposible" and a few others that are more like what many have come to associate with Javier Solis. Another in the "Serie 2 en 1" entitled "Interpreta a Agustin Lara and Prisionero del Mar" is highly recommended although completely different in style.Perfect music for romance hearts and a soulful retreat in time.

GREVER BAENA HEARD WITH THE BEST OF THE VOICES.......2002-11-27

This is cd is one of the best cd's I have from Javier Solis. It is one of the many that Sony released under 2 for 1. This one has Baena and Grever songs in both orchestra and Mariachi. In orchestra it includes Perfidia and Cuando Vuelva a tu Lado. this was boleros with orchestra before Luis Miguel. Another favorite is Grever's Te Quiero Dijiste. A classic must have!

Javier tambien con orquesta.......2000-02-25

Aun cuando no es muy conocida esta produccion, el CD incluye varios temas con acompañamiento de orquesta. Cabe anotar que existe otro album llamado "Javier Solis con Orquesta" el cual recoge otros temas como En esta tarde gris, El mundo, Buen viaje, etc. y del cual Sony no ha programado su grabación en CD. En este CD podran encontrar dos versiones, una con orquesta y otra con mariachi, del conocido tema Cuando vuelva a tu lado. Adicionalmente incluye temas como Noche de ronda y Tres palabras de mas de 300 canciones que grabo el artista mexicano.

I just recently received this CD and it was awesome. Para los que les gusta bailara salsa, les recomiendo que lo compren. Oscar tiene otro CD super bueno. Mucho instrumentos fantasticos en casi todas las canciones. Que lo vayan a gosar!!
